Hey Trevor, could you please expand on what a mini gun is? I am just getting into painting and don't know enough. Also, what air pressure would you use with a mini gun, and what brand would you recommend for an beginner who may not continue with this new hobby? Thanks in advance.

A mini spray gun is basically a smaller version of a full-size spray gun. They are useful in situations where you need even coverage over a larger area that isn't large enough to require a full-size spray gun (not that you couldn't use a large gun for the same purpose). One big advantage to a mini spray gun compared to a full-size gun is they don't require the same amount of air flow to operate. So, you can get by with using a mini spray gun with a smaller compressor that would normally struggle to keep up with a full-size spray gun. You still need a decently sized air compressor to run a mini spray gun though. I wouldn't recommend using a mini gun with a compressor specifically designed and marketed for airbrush use only.
The air pressure setting I use with a mini spray gun is normally whatever the manufacturer recommends in the operating manual that comes with the gun. That number will vary slightly between different manufacturers and their specific guns, but I've found their recommended setting almost always works the best. The mini spray guns I prefer to use are the Sata Mini Jet and the Iwata LPH 80. Those are both excellent guns that will work for a beginner or a seasoned artist; however, the price point may not be for the hobbyist who may or may not continue with this hobby.
You can find cheap mini spray guns online or in the big box stores that will get the job done, but there is another option. You can also purchase a trigger style airbrush. Those usually include a conical air cap and a fan air cap. The fan air cap sprays just like a mini spray gun covering a larger area quickly and evenly. You also don't need a larger compressor in order to run one of those airbrushes because they have roughly the same air requirement as any other airbrush. Two examples that I own and highly recommend are the Iwata HP-TH and the Grex Tritium TG7.

Thanks for your quick reply. I checked out your recommendations, they look really nice. But as I am over 65 years old, I don't have the drive or the interest to get really nice equipment, nor want to start putting out artwork for sale. I am just trying to keep my mind as active as possible. OTOH, your information was exactly what I needed and I ordered a $25 unit from Ebay. If I break it or loose interest it won't hurt me. Cheers and I hope to learn more as I follow you.

I really like they way the white skull jumps out. Looks cool. And the flames in the eye sockets. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone do it that way. Usually it’s all candy like the skull behind it.

Thank you! I usually like to add a little bit of color when I paint something in grayscale. The contrast makes it stand out and the glow in the sockets ties it all together.

Hey Trevor, great work and video! Most artists prefer to have "free will" given to them by clients rather than having them dictate what they want. My questions are how do you work with your clients on what art you use, your "free will", strictly what they want or a combination? And who chose the theme for this project, you or your client? Thank you Trevor!

Hey Stan! I appreciate the kind words and those are great questions! While I do appreciate those clients that are willing to give me free rein, it can be a double-edged sword. I actually prefer a combination. Most people looking for custom paint have some idea of what they want. Some have a better idea than others, but an artist's brain is wired a little different than most of our client's. They don't see things the same way we see them. They don't always understand composition or color theory. That's a big part of why they seek an artist out whether they realize it or not. Although I hate to say it, a big part of being a custom painter is being a salesman. My goal is to take an idea from a potential client, whether that's a well thought out idea or just a start and transform it into something we're both excited about. Sometimes that can be accomplished through conversation only. Sometimes it requires putting ideas on paper, and sometimes it requires putting ideas down on a test panel. Everyone is a little different when it comes to their needs and expectations.
As far as the artwork on the bike featured in this video (and many of my more recent videos) goes, it's a little bit of a long story. The short version is I was provided with a theme and several ideas from the client. I came up with all of the artwork and design based on those ideas.
