  • Kiln venting and dust collection are two things every pottery studio should have or consider if they can be improved or not. In this video, I show you how to vent a kiln and control silica dust with a window mounted DIY kitchen fan vent. Obviously good work habits and wet mopping/sponging helps with dust control, but silica is bound to accumulate and eventually make it's way into the air and then into your lungs. There are air filtration systems out there that you can buy but they are expensive and usually made for much larger spaces.
THIS BUILD COSTED ME $20 because I had everything besides the fan. If you purchase everything you still might be able to do the same build for under $100. In my opinion that still a pretty good bang for your buck and I LOVE how it looks. Plus I made it myself, so there's always value added when it's a DIY project.
The kiln vent and dust collection system I made in this video isn't as good at those professional systems, but it works really well for my specific needs. My pottery studio is only 8'x14.5' so I was able to get away with using a smaller fan/vent that is right near all of my fume and dust making activities. It also doesn't have to filter the air because it just vents to the outside of my house.
I still have modifications to make to this system but it is a BIG step forward. The kiln vent/dust vent combination has made a HUGE difference in dust control, air quality, and overall health of the space. Any suggestions you have are always welcome. Let's brainstorm for healthier pottery studios!

Thanks GB. I'm trying to get on a schedule that is manageable. I'm working on another triple wheel throwing video at the moment with some fun film cuts.

Cool, but why would you ditch your box fans for this fan? It's only 180 CFM, while the average box fan is over 1,000 CFM. 🤔

Hi, this was very informative.. since I’m having a garage add on .. n I’ll need a vent I didn’t know I would! Lol
    Will I need a vent for a fire-fly kiln?

I’m not familiar with that kiln but all kilns should be vented in some way. Direct connect, hood, or even the double box fan. Fumes from the kiln are not good to breath long term. Especially glaze firing. I good friend of mine fires his in his garage and points a fan at it and another out a door or window

thanks for the video! Very useful and informative for reducing studio dust! Do you also have a vent that is attached to your kiln that draws air from inside the kiln? Because I hear that the kiln vents (that suck air into/out of kiln) make more more efficient and even firing.

I used to have one with my older fan motor. I heard the same thing which is why I tried it. The fan wasn’t strong enough to pull so can’t give you any info or data. I’m working piping to try it with my new and stronger fan.
