Fun fact, there's a very easy way to get a shiny Ditto in Gold and Silver with a glitch. You need a Gen 1 game to trade with though. Take the Red Gyarados (or any other shiny) and trade it to a Gen 1 game, then teach it Mimic. Then encounter a Ditto in the wild and have it transform into the Pokemon you traded, have it use Mimic on you, then catch it. Trade the Ditto to Gen 2 and it will be shiny! Gen 1 is truly the gift that keeps on giving.
Make sure the shiny you use to catch the Ditto knows only Mimic. The trick is to get the transformed ditto to use mimic on your Pokémon, so that way, the Ditto copies the stats of your shiny Pokémon. The DVs on your shiny is what makes it shiny in Gen 2.

For Gen 2, I wanna add that, if you use a shiny parent for hunting, you will have to continually breed through egg groups in order to hunt for the Pokémon you want. Say you start with the Lake of Rage Gyarados (100% shiny rate), and you want a shiny Eevee. You would have to calculate and find the correct chain to go from the Dragon egg group all the way down to the Field egg group, which from me doing that in the past, will take you about 6-7 different egg groups to breed down to. Plus, compatibility is HUGE for egg encounter rates. The easiest thing to do is trade a Pokémon with a different OT name. It’s complicated, but if you’re just going for random shinies, then you do you. (PS: starter Pokémon shinies, Eevee, and any Pokémon that has the 85%-15% male to female ratio can only be a male shiny. Which is good if you need a shiny parent to filter down to a specific Pokémon.

@@joelsifilis also to add some more elaboration, it’s why he didn’t touch Horde Hunting in Gen6 at all, because it’s just full odds only with 5 rolls rather then 1.
I think my favorite way to Shiny hunt has to be Horde Encounters in Generation VI, especially when combined with the Shiny Charm. It's just so easy to do compared to basically every other method in the series─just stand there and keep using Sweet Scent until you find one!
Another correction for radar hunting if you capture a Pokémon it only boosts the NEXT shakes similar to Let’s go Pikachu Eevee, any new “radar” launches resets it back to 88% instead of 98% after a capture
Seeing the PokeRadar section of the video makes me happy because I learned a LOT about how that mechanic works in order to find my dream shiny which I got late March this year. I must have done 100+ Radar attempts to get it.
Chain fishing in gen 6 is easier if you make sure to get in a tile that is enclosed around it (so the tile you’re on is covered with your player and then the other three tiles around the space you’re fishing on have things like land or rocks to block those tiles). Also lead with something that has suction cups for the ability (I used to use Octillery). Do that and your chain pretty much won’t ever break unless you intentionally break it. I got like 3 shiny Luvdisc in 90 encounters straight in like an hour and a half
I say earning a shiny gibble/dratini via the black city/white forest facility in BW2 could’ve counted as a method. There’s not a lot of other places where you can obtain a shiny as a reward for battling. In generation 1 (and Let’s Go) there’s also the in game trade shiny hunting method. Which seems like something only a mad man would try.
Ive definitely had the best luck with the ultra wormhole, but s.o.s. is still my favorite method because of how many more options you have in comparison.
I feel like John missed swarm hunting in gen 6, yes it's just a better version of double battle grass for b/w but I think it was a very viable option for that gen if the pokemon you wanted could be found in swarms
You forgot one. Two words: friend safari. Combining shiny charm with kalos’ friend safari, you have about a 1/585 chance to find shiny pokemon of 2 or 3 different species that vary depending on varying factors. Also if youve unlocked the third pokemon, they will also have their hidden ability too, making them even more special!
XY chain fishing gave me my first non red gyarados shiny. A corsola, I was fishing for dex completion when she appeared. Love her blueness to this day. Horde in XY was my second , a trevenant.
It never fails to amuse me how I’ve managed to find 5 shiny Pokémon in Gen 3 over the past 15 years, one of which I found randomly in Ruby LAST NIGHT as of writing this, and still not one between Gen 4 and Gen 7
I remember when I chain fished for days just catching shinies and such. So many Relicanths... but I ultimately got myself a wonderful shiny Skrelp LOL Chain Fishing was so much fun and I miss being able to do it. I had so much fun with it to XD Even more fond memories from Sun/Moon where I did an SOS hunt for a Shiny Rockruff before beating the game and ever getting the shiny charm. I named her Wind Tiger (After Tiger of the Wind from the Monster Hunter anime >>)
Fantastic video as always, John! My most recent shiny hunt in Violet yielded a shiny Eevee in, I kid you not, EIGHT EGGS. I used Masuda Method and the shiny charm and was kind of expecting it to take awhile but there he was! So I finally have my shiny Umbreon.
You missed out on three other methods: Horde Battles (XY) Shaking Grass/Wind/Water (Black/White) Isolated Encounters such as Paras in Mt. Moon and Zubat/Others in Altering Cave or Unown in the handful of places they appear. There is also the Abilities that draw out certain Pokémon based on their type example: Static to draw electric types 50% of the time. Has been around since Pokemon Emerald however Scarlet and Violet removed all abilities to have secondary effects outside of battle with the exception of Flame Body and Magma Armor for hatching eggs. Hilariously Illuminate, though in the system no Pokémon in the game will ever have it. Otherwise, there are two methods in which you can receive a shiny based on GIFT and Purchase. In Leaf Green and Fire Red you can buy a whole bunch of Abra and fill a few boxes with a chance they'll be shiny since it only costs 120 coins. This can be done in Gold/Silver however that method would take a much longer time to check. In Heart Gold and Soul Silver, you can get stuck in Cianwood City by depositing your flying Pokémon and Surfing Pokémon in the daycare and teleport back to Cianwood. A man will gift you a Tentacool which has the chance of being shiny.
You probably won't see this, but your videos are the most high quality videos on UA-cam. I have rewatched multiple of your videos over 5 times, they're AMAZING!!!
My current favorite Shiny Hunting method "gimmick" that I found was doing a Normal Type Sandwich and going to where Cyclizar spawn and standing in one spot until the shiny appears by itself!
I did a play through once of ORAS where I filled my party with a shiny from every method. Soft reset my starter, found a random encounter, fishing chained, dexnav chained, swarmed, and revived a fossil. I think it would be fun to watch you stream that + the play through.
A few shiny hunting methods that you missed: The gen 3 games have some pretty easy RNG manipulations you can do to hunt shiny Pokémon. Also Community Day in Pokémon Go is an extremely easy way to get Shiny Pokémon.
Amazing video! I haven't shiny hunted a while, so I haven't tried the newest methods. I liked the chain fishing, it was pretty easy. It was somewhat about luck, but pokémon with suction cup ability helped. Also closing your eyes and just listening helped too. Unfortunately, you obviously can catch just some water pokémon with it. I liked sos-method too. It was simple and you could watch videos or do something else while hunting. In newest gen I don't like that it doesn't give the shiny sound or show sparkles in overworld. I wonder how many shinies I have missed... (I haven't shiny hunted, but found a few when playing.)
Great video! I love seeing people post Shiny Pokémon videos that actually explain the hunts and methods rather than just cheap reaction videos. I did note a few things, though: -Gen II: the Ditto/Pokémon you use doesn’t have to be Shiny to shiny breed, but it does have to have the Shiny Gene (which is having a Defense IV of 10 AND a Special IV of either 2 or 10). The easiest solution for max odds is to catch a Ditto with the Shiny Gene, which is a 1/128 chance, and you can tell a Ditto has the Shiny Gene really easily. Just place it and the Shiny Gyarados into the Daycare and talk to one of the Pokémon. If it says it’s brimming with energy, you’ll know you have a Shiny Gene Ditto. -Gen IV: With PokeRadar, you have to go into the same patch type as the one you started with or your chain has a very high chance to break. Also, the 2% break chance only applies to the set of patches immediately after catching a Pokémon. If you reset the radar, your odds of breaking the chain randomly go from 2% to 12%. -Gen VI: DexNav’s a beast to understand, but you got the basics of it. For hunting anywhere where the Pokémon moves, the Pokémon will follow a pattern of where they’ll move to and when they’ll pop up (instead of being an empty dust cloud), and that pattern can be learned easily, so follow that. -Gen VII: Sun and Moon’s SOS odds are the exact same as Ultra Sun and Moon’s. What you stated in the video is old information. There is a difference between the two games, though. The odds will reset every 255 encounters and you’ll need to knock another 30 out to get back to 1/273. My personal favorite hunting method is PokeRadar in Gen IV. It’s so easy to complete entire lines of Shiny Pokémon with that method.
I LOVE DEXNAV HUNTING! Back in high school, I did a DexNav hunt during my Geometry class and ended up getting a shiny Ralts, who I evolved into my favorite Pokemon, Gardevoir. Still have her in Pokemon HOME to this day despite losing my copy of Alpha Sapphire.
Hey man, I'm happy you are confident showing your face now but I absolutely despise random cuts to live reactions from a twitch stream. It's really frustrating when you're trying to watch something calming and you randomly or just louder and more energetic for no reason. I'm probably in the minority, but it's likely I'll have to stop watching your content if I can't fall asleep to it.
My Shiny hunting method of choice is Masuda Method. It’s the easiest for me to not worry about missing or killing the Shiny while doing it. Though I have done a fair few SOS chaining hunts, so I would consider that my second favorite method.
You seem like youre having a lot of fun. Honestly, you have every console and I'm guessing every major installment of Pokemon. That chipper optimism is valid. Color me jealous.
21:40 So that's why i managed to get Luvdisc shiny when i played X last time i played it through. i was just grinding and boom a yellow heart shaped cutiepie appeared. it's been a year or 2, but i remember also having a full odds shiny Fennekin and Wingull in that save too. just for the extra flex :D
For the SOS, every like 10-20 call for helps (it’s just what I did; y’all do you) just kill the older one and false swipe the new one. When they call for help they call for a Pokémon with better IVs or somethin. So, all of the shinies I got using the sos method hit like a truck.
Not even exaggerating when I say that the Altaria is one of my favorite shiny hunting clips of all time. Gotta go big mode for the big bird

Another correction for radar hunting if you capture a Pokémon it only boosts the NEXT shakes similar to Let’s go Pikachu Eevee, any new “radar” launches resets it back to 88% instead of 98% after a capture
I was surprised not to see the Friend Safari for X and Y, since that was probably my go-to back then
Seems like John wasn’t around much for Gen 6. Which makes sense, he started his channel during Gen 7
Chain fishing faster
Man I love your energy, you seem like such a genuinely nice person. Your smile and laugh is so contagious, you’re amazing and don’t you forget it
BW2 technically has another shiny increasing option with the lucky pass powers.
One of my first shiny Pokemon was Relicanth in Y. Nice to see him again :)
John's nack for story telling is always my favorite part about the videos
This makes me want to do older gen shiny hunts again. Thank you for rekindling my love for shiny hunting!
Seeing the PokeRadar section of the video makes me happy because I learned a LOT about how that mechanic works in order to find my dream shiny which I got late March this year. I must have done 100+ Radar attempts to get it.
it’s always a good day when John uploads
Chain fishing in gen 6 is easier if you make sure to get in a tile that is enclosed around it (so the tile you’re on is covered with your player and then the other three tiles around the space you’re fishing on have things like land or rocks to block those tiles). Also lead with something that has suction cups for the ability (I used to use Octillery). Do that and your chain pretty much won’t ever break unless you intentionally break it. I got like 3 shiny Luvdisc in 90 encounters straight in like an hour and a half
now hunt for a shiny costume on stadium
Glad to see this video is finally complete, I can't wait for your next big project! It was fun accompanying your journey.
horde hunt fans rn: 🤬🤬🤬
I say earning a shiny gibble/dratini via the black city/white forest facility in BW2 could’ve counted as a method. There’s not a lot of other places where you can obtain a shiny as a reward for battling.
In generation 1 (and Let’s Go) there’s also the in game trade shiny hunting method. Which seems like something only a mad man would try.
Theres also Lucky Power+++ in gen 5 for increased shiny odds.
And Masuda you could’ve done in gen 4.
I was about to say that, myself.
@@shiningragnaroksblaze9600 Great minds think alike xD
Ive definitely had the best luck with the ultra wormhole, but s.o.s. is still my favorite method because of how many more options you have in comparison.
Every time I feel demotivated to shiny hunt or play the game at all, you show up and give me that motivation :)
I love that you got your shiny zorua while giving us Pokémon trivia 17:06
XY chain fishing gave me my first non red gyarados shiny. A corsola, I was fishing for dex completion when she appeared. Love her blueness to this day. Horde in XY was my second , a trevenant.
23:06 John needs to be the new pogchamp emote
I love alternate color pokemon a moderate amount 👍, Great video Mr.Stone
This video is amazing because it shows me all the easy hunts
you’re the new david attenborough. i play your videos and it helps me fall asleep
not because your boring, i just fuck wit the voice
My sound volume watching someone like KSI: 20%
My sound volume watching Johnstone: 150%
fun fact: you can just jump straight into area zero without having to go into the building
The amount of John luck he's getting that I'm surprised he hasn't complete a Shiny Living Dex
Johnstone's old videos used to be so calm and professional and that's why I liked them. I can't do with the over the top streamer yelling
You missed out on three other methods:
Horde Battles (XY)
Shaking Grass/Wind/Water (Black/White)
Isolated Encounters such as Paras in Mt.
Those aren't methods that increase shiny odds so they aren't applicable here....
Absolutely loving all the shiny content! Looking forward to what shiny content you have planned for the future! :)
You can technically use ACE in RBY or GSC as a shiny hunting method. You just have to transfer the pokemon up if you're doing RBY
You probably won't see this, but your videos are the most high quality videos on UA-cam. I have rewatched multiple of your videos over 5 times, they're AMAZING!!!
We've been waiting for ages! Another banger from Mr. Johnstone.
My current favorite Shiny Hunting method "gimmick" that I found was doing a Normal Type Sandwich and going to where Cyclizar spawn and standing in one spot until the shiny appears by itself!
*Horde Encounters Left the Chat*
My soul is melting at this man running from shinies
I did a play through once of ORAS where I filled my party with a shiny from every method. Soft reset my starter, found a random encounter, fishing chained, dexnav chained, swarmed, and revived a fossil.
I think it would be fun to watch you stream that + the play through.
That Chatot scream sounded like a jumpscare from that horror game Faith: The Unholy Trinity. There's a John in that game, too.
A few shiny hunting methods that you missed:
The gen 3 games have some pretty easy RNG manipulations you can do to hunt shiny Pokémon. Also Community Day in Pokémon Go is an extremely easy way to get Shiny Pokémon.
RNG manipping is a different thing from shiny hunting.
I've hatched 896 eggs in SV. The odds of the Masuda Method, with the Shiny Charm, are 512. I. Am. Suffering.
Can we take time to appreciate how much time and effort has been put into this video
This was extremely cool, but you should challenge yourself to get a full odds shiny in every game now
Great video! I love seeing people post Shiny Pokémon videos that actually explain the hunts and methods rather than just cheap reaction videos.
I did note a few things, though:
-Gen II: the Ditto/Pokémon you use doesn’t have to be Shiny to shiny breed, but it does have to have the Shiny Gene (which is having a Defense IV of 10 AND a Special IV of either 2 or 10).
So when are you shiny hunting Manaphy in gen 4?
That Chatot segment was LEGENDARY😂😂
Some of my favorite hunts were gen 4 pokeradar dongle hunts. It was so cool to chain for special pokemon you can't get any other way in the game!
The close up face cam altaria was hilarious and Very Nice on the heavy ball for iron thorns 👌
I didnt see a shiny mareep in the violet vid but this vid? I approve
I got a full odds shiny magcargo in Pokémon platinum while watching this his name is grimace
Wonderful video. The only thing that I want to say is that I was sure that Masuda's method was implemented on 4th gen 😅. But still a really good video
I love how once you play the 3D games you get three in one stream 😂
I spent days mastering the timing to get an ID that works with the cute charm glitch, was a such a fun playthough getting shinies every few mins
You seem like youre having a lot of fun. Honestly, you have every console and I'm guessing every major installment of Pokemon. That chipper optimism is valid. Color me jealous.
Ive been playing pokemon for so many years now and only just learning about the hunts in crystal and gold is crazy 😂
21:40
So that's why i managed to get Luvdisc shiny when i played X last time i played it through.
i was just grinding and boom a yellow heart shaped cutiepie appeared.
it's been a year or 2, but i remember also having a full odds shiny Fennekin and Wingull in that save too.
just for the extra flex :D
If there's one thing I learned in Scarlet/Violet, you will find Shinies when you least expect it and never the one you really want.
13:01 i never seen so angry about a shiny before
For the SOS, every like 10-20 call for helps (it’s just what I did; y’all do you) just kill the older one and false swipe the new one. When they call for help they call for a Pokémon with better IVs or somethin. So, all of the shinies I got using the sos method hit like a truck.
