John one quick way to encounter the Johto beasts while they’re roaming (at least for me) is to use the radio. On days that aren’t Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, it plays Pokémon March, which increases your encounter rate while it’s playing. Then you put on a super repel in the gate to the west of Ecruteak while the radio is playing, and save. Then you go out into the route and bike until the repel wears out. If it wears out, reset the save and try again. If you find Entei, reset the save and try again. I’m actually in the process of shiny hunting them using this method, since whether or not they’re shiny is generated when you first encounter them. It’s a brutal shiny hunt, but it’ll be worth it

Just gave birth to my daughter in may and this was the best thing to kill time and relax watching all the VODs. Love your videos ❤❤
dude i swear you're the king of this.. i genuinely look up to your content so much
God I love Generation 2. I could replay those games infinitely. Something about the atmosphere in those games really vibes with me and it only got better in Heartgold & Soulsilver. Just got Crystal Legacy on my Analogue Pocket and am excited to play it again with some quality of life changes.
That's me with gen 4! I love those games so much and they were a huge part of my childhood :D
@@nyancat8828 Its honestly gen 1-4 for me. I remember going through Gold for the first time with my mom when I was like 5 years old, so it holds a special place in my heart.
That Doduo encounter actually had me on the edge of my seat
P
I love John’s videos, and I’m extremely happy that he keeps making then because I don’t think I’d be able to follow a live.
His video tone is so calm, in love he seems to be SO loud 😂
No hate, it’s just a matter of preference, the difference is astounding
Slight correction: In Pokemon Crystal the events with Eusine are entirely optional. You can straight up catch Suicune as soon as you have the Clear Bell.
this is one of the few times where you've uploaded a challenge i've already completed, its super cool to see how our strategies varied!
I must have missed something. How did he activate the GS Ball event?
I’ve been wondering the same thing. Like I thought it was only made available on the Virtual Console
@@son1ck25 It was. I suspect he was streaming the VC rom running on an emulator, and just transferred the save file to his cartridge when needed.
Oh, it's simple. You just need to follow these steps:
1: Cheat.
It is 100% possible to do on an English cartridge, if you import the save onto 3DS using a cart reader, get the event on 3DS, then import that save back to the cartridge, the event was fully translated and was present on English cartridges. Source: I did it myself.
@@kazinwho I feel like he should’ve shown the process or explain how he did it in the video as well. I know he mentions that you can do this on the VC if you were fortunate enough to buy the games when the eShop was available but he decided to do the challenge on the original hardware and set up that was all he was doing by even including pricing on what you need to complete the dex.
this was awesome!! the printing of the diploma was the absolute cherry on top, eventhough it didnt print well after that long
"I will eat ur internet cable" John 2024
These will never get old 😂❤ well done John :D the nostalgia and the commentary and the luck you have all rolled into one is just great
amazingly timed video I'm just about to spend half an hour dying my hair ty for doing this for me personally and nobody else :)
Nice vid! My gens 1-2 cartridges had run out of battery like 2 years ago, and I remember how fun it was re-catching everything on real hardware xD luckily stadium g/s can speed up things in many ways
25:32 At this point I’m just gonna become a poketuber to boost my luck
30:23 the way you say “it’s an honor” makes me so unreasonably happy that it’s become a vocal stim for me
5:20 “right as this happened” all of a sudden an ad for the military starts and I get jump scared by the sound of gunshots
I've been following you for years at this point and I never cease to be entertained by you I love the vids keep them up
This is the gen 2 content I live for🫡
Edit: fun fact, Umbreon and Espeon are coded to flee despite never having wild encounters
the speed at which you tell me about pokemon is fantastic, 10/10
Imagine not checking the ink of a 2 decades old printer before using it...
truly a Johnstone moment
The GB Printer is a thermal printer, it doesn't use ink. The real issue is that the printer paper was old so it doesn't get as singed by the printer. Needed fresh paper.
it's hilarious how confidently wrong people are on the internet lmao
@@DarkBowser64it’s similar to what most receipt printers use, right? which explains the specific scale of the GB printer. could easily buy a new roll of (the correct kind of) receipt paper and be able to print it!
@@frog_goblin yes, I do believe people use a specific type of Seiko printer paper with it which is the only one to roughly fit GB Printer's paper size. Obviously, though, it has to be relatively new and not stored away for a while. The game itself has darkness settings for the GB Printer in the options menu that one can use, ranging from Lightest to Darkest which can also affect the appearance of prints on the paper.
@@DarkBowser64 to be fair it depends on the type of thermal printer, there are ones that use ink and there are ones that use special "paper". Regardless John should have tested the material and the printer in general before using it...
It’s a brutal shiny hunt, but it’ll be worth it
how did you do the celebii event in english? did you transfer your save to a rom or e console version? or is you cartridge some kinda rom hack fix to activate the event?
Am wondering same thing
Babe wake up, a new Johnstone vid has hit the timeline
Dang, you spent so much time on this. I’m proud of you! 👏
I absolutely love your videos John! They've really hit me right in the nostalgia and made me appreciate these games even more after not playing them for over a decade.
I have to ask (and maybe one of your subs can help out), I HAVE to know where you got that Umbreon neon sign?! Its PERFECT
How did you get the Celebi encounter in the cartridge edition of Crystal? The GS ball event was only available outside Japan in the VC release.
Wondering the same thing.
He nodded his save. I'm guessing he has that little adapter where you can copy your save over to your computer and mod and add the gs ball into your inventory. After that you copy that modded save over to your cartridge.
Either he hacked or used the coin case, in any case I don’t know if it matters
we all agree to never tell john about pokerogue right with all those shinies we might never see him again
Man being sneaky and not telling us how he managed the Celebi event since that is not doable on an English *cartridge*.
My guess: despite having a cartridge he actually streamed an emulator, and just transferred the save file to the cartridge when needed. But the rom he played on the emulator was ripped from the VC rather than an original rom?
@@teelo12000there's a program to transfer a GBC save to a VC release save, so if I had to guess he played on official hardware but transfered his save using those CFW programs.
Maybe he didn't mention it because he knows TPCi watches his videos?

so happy with myself for actually being part of the stream fam that watched this happen
CRYSTAL IS THE BEST POKEMON GAME.....idk why i had to all caps that....BUT IT'S TRUE
I'll never forget the day when I was probably 10, I was playing Pokemon Crystal on my gameboy and I was at the begining doing the Professor's Elm quest.
When leaving the professor's lab, on that first grass patch, a wild Shiny Pidgey appeared! I freaked out!! It was the first shiny I've ever encoutered on a grass patch!
Then I tried to catch, but I had 0 pokeballs, I haven't even had the Pokedex...
Finding a shiny pokemon while not having pokeballs should be a crime!
RIP Shiny Pidgey from 2002!
Wonder who has better luck, Johnstone or Alpharad
Either way "God is real, and he *does* have favourites." - Alpharad
Alpharad's luck isn't necessarily good, his luck is funny
I remember when you sounded like a businessman doing a power point in your old videos, now you're a gamer, I love character development
Crystal was my first game. Kinda glad I was too young to be a completionist.
So happy to see this, i recently purchased gold crystal yellow to complete all of them to complete my childhood, only pokemon i glitched was celebi and mew the rest where all obtained legit, was a really fun grind
Dude caught more on day one in just Jhoto than he did in all of Gen 1-8. Glad to see when a gamer gets better.
I’ve shiny hunted for months for my shinies and John just finds it at random.
12:28 has got to be the funniest thing i've heard in a solid while
Just watching this video atm after work (recommended from feed), congratulations on the shiny Doduo, the 1x Pokeball part got me real good!
Let’s see how this goes.
HE GOT AN XXL SHUNDO
Clearing out storage for Go Fest tomorrow, this will do as background. Love this series
See I knew I wanted to complete the living dex in Gen 2 and I have two 3DS's one with Yellow and Silver and the other with Crystal. Also, how did he get Celebi in a Crystal cart without hacking?
Tototile really is the best choice. ♥
Wait a minute. I thought that Celebi couldn't be gotten on a physical copy of Crystal? Only on the Virtua Boy version on the DS?
He's playing his physical copy on an emulation handheld, which allows for cheat injection.
@@PlayMadness aaaahhhhh. That makes sense
this is PERFECT cause I have just been going through your videos, watching and rewatching at work as I have been in a big pokemon mood. Great video as usual. Definitely inspiring me to complete my pokedex for my games.
how did you get celibi? or was that a game shark codeing? didnt think it was available unless you used the vc version? also totally seen that comming with the printer and the thermal ink
W video saving for when I go sleep or when I am eating.
5:48 Sonic Advance? What's his typing?
I have a deep love for Gen 2 since its virtual console release got me into Pokémon during COVID, so this was really fun vid to watch.
This man alone saved the first forty-two minutes of my six-hour road journey.
5:13 You see, this is the reason you move all of your Living Dex to the Lab's Boxes in Pokemon Stadium 2 to immortalize them. Dodrio Mode also greatly improved this process.
Wait, how did he get Celebi? As far as I'm aware that event was exclusive to the japanese version and the 3DS rerelease but he was playing on an original english GBC copy
Cheating
John’s challenges look so painful to complete 😂 happy someone else is doing them
You said no cheats, how did you activate the GS ball event on a US copy of crystal? The only way to do that is either editing your save file with a cheat device or doing the "bad egg" glitch. I know you didn't say glitches weren't off limits since you used the mew glitch, but you acted like the event just happened like it was normal.
Oh the nostalgia. The first Pokémon game in color I remember drooling over that.
As a real life chikorita I'm genuinely offended by your comments on us being weak and ugly
We aren't weak we just aren't given the opportunity to shine and we are definitely cute
the way you kept reassuring us that this was a "hard challenge" was brilliant xD
SHINY XXL HUNDO, HOOOOOLY
You did great, I loved all the crazy events that happened this challenge! It inspires me to look for people who partake in the challenge of actually obtaining legitimate Pokérus...
Also, despite everything, I think you might've forgot a Pokémon in your list. It's really disappointing to see a person claim to have a full Pokédex without... Volcanion, I think it was?
"the gay roaming trio" im so happy that stuck around.
Dude, I JUST finished my Crystal playthrough yesterday and was giving up on completing its dex to move onto gen 3. But I guess we're doing it now thanks to this video.
Wait how did he get the gs ball on an english cart?
In crystal after beating the league you can get the gs ball after leaving a poke center but I forget in which town
@@ChronCP-s1e That’s only on virtual console. Johnstone used emulation cheats I assume.
No you can't, not in the cart version. You only get the gs ball in the 3ds eshop version. Since this was all about how he bought a physical copy of crystal and played it, there's shenanigans involved
These are by far my fav type of videos in ur channel
John stone is my dad
How did you get the GS Ball in a cartridge Crystal?
When I played Silver as a kid, I finished the Pokédex, and it was indeed a lot of trading back and forth with Pokemon Yellow. Ah, memories.
Well that’s an insane thing to do lol. I’m glad now we have multiple games on the same console with Pokémon Home. On the switch you can get almost every Pokémon luckily
