My lawn mower sat around for 5 years and would not start, but after watching your video I was able to get it running in just a few minutes. I had no idea that the bolt had holes in it so I did not know to clean it.Your video may not pertain to everyone, but it worked for me!THANK-YOU !!!
I'm dirt poor and did this and I can't say thank you enough. Runs like it was new again. South Alabama and already having to cut first of March. Never seen such a warm winter in all my 69 years
Thank you so much for this video. Just bought our first house and the owners left us a mower but they hadn't used it in years. This did the trick. Mowed the lawn of my first home!
Thank you so much! I'm a 55 year-old woman and fixed it myself. I feel so proud. My mower wouldn't start after winter and I drained the old gas and took off the bolt like you said and cleaned the holes with a sewing needle. Mine looked a little different but it had a few holes in it. Cleaned the gunk around the area with an old toothbrush and put fresh gasoline in it and it started! I'm so happy, thanks again for taking the time to make this video.
I always point out that fact that, yes, you fo need to drain out the old gas, sldo, wouldn't hurt to to replace the fuel line as well as install a gasoline fuel filter, and replace your fuel fulter every two years.

Wow I spent 2 hrs trying the filter ,new spark plug, fresh gas and nothing ,but thanks to your video I was able to make it work in minutes .. 10 years after you loaded this video you’re still saving money to a lot a people, thank you.
Really quite an amazing tip. I tried everything to start my relatively new mower that had sat for a season. I literally had a blister on my hand from pulling the starter cord so many times. I had sprayed starter fluid in the carburetor and it would only turn over for a few turns. After trying this tip the lawn mower started on the first pull and ran amazingly. Thanks!!
Yes, great advice!! After wasting time over the weekend trying to get my mower to start, I saw your video this morning, went home at lunch and tried it and it started on the first pull!!! Thanks, I paid $85 bucks last season with the same issue.
Thank you this worked great. I cleaned everything but that and changed the spark plug put new oil in and gas and nothing else worked until I watched this video and had that duh moment. A case of beer is needed
Thanks a million! My husband tried everything to get our mower started. The next step was the repair shop. I found your video and had my husband watch it. He said it was worth a try. It only took a couple of minutes and the mower started right up.

Thank you for posting this video. My mower had been running 'just fine', though I'll admit that it probably wasn't, it just ran well enough to cut the grass, and then - this weekend, 'suddenly', it wouldn't start. I'm not the most handy person when it comes to engines - but I followed your recommendations. I disassembled the air intake, and used a stripped bread-tie, and poked several of the gasoline ports, and then worked on the air filter which was totally caked and clogged with grass and dirt. I scraped the gunk off and then poured a tiny bit of gasoline through the sponge (after removing it to a pan to catch the nasty run off ) and then let it air for a few minutes, before reassembling everything. The mower started right up, and it ran much better than it has for a while. Saved me from buying a new one or paying a repair shop. Thanks again!
I worked on my mower almost all day...wouldn't start. Eventually I gave up and thank God I found this video. I was able to fix the mower in a few minutes. Thank you!
Thank you!! You saved me a few hundred dollars for a good new mower for nothing more than twenty minutes of light elbow grease (I filled the tank before watching your cool video). And now my decade old Toro is running like a champ again! That’s worth watching both ads for...
Thank you soooooo sooooo much! I pulled that cord about fifty times with no luck and thought about buying a new one. Looked at your video, took my tool kit to my mower and followed your steps and wow! It started the first time and is now even quieter than before!!!! Thanx again!
After only using my brand new mower for about 5 times it stopped turning on. I checked Briggs and Stratton web site for hours couldn't come up with any solution. After watching this video and 15 minutes hands on, my brand new mower started like it was first time. THANK YOU DANDLINC.
Thank you, you saved me a couple of hundred bucks. It worked on both of my mowers that have been sitting. One needed a little spark plug cleaning but it started right up. Shops have been ripping people off for years. Thanks again. This is the biggest thing ever...!!!
I spent 4+ hours trouble shooting a one year old lawn mower. It worked fine last week. At the end of my exasperation, i sat down with a beer and looked up you-tube videos on lawn mower repair and found this. Yeah, like it was going to work. The newer design doesn’t have as many holes and isn’t part of the screw system like in the video. Still, I poked the two holes in the plug. My lawn is done! BIG THANKS!
Thank you for taking the time to share your info. I put this knowledge right to use and immediately went from zero to hero. Bolt hole was clogged as you mentioned and after clearing it, mower started on first pull. Its amazing what can be accomplished when theres someone there to explain what to do.

Worked like a charm!!! In order to avoid draining the gas, I flipped the mower up side down. Used compressed air instead of a twisty tie (the compressor was closer than the kitchen).

UN-FREAKING-BELIEVEABLE!!! I had the same problem. I watched a video on carburetor cleaning. Took off the carb, cleaned it, put it back together, put it back on. Spent two hours. No change. Bought a can of carb cleaner. Sprayed the heck out of the carburetor. No change. Put gas treatment in tank. Tried to run the mower. No change. I was ready to buy a new carburetor and I stumbled on this video. What did I have to lose, so I tried it. It took ten minutes to do. I laughed to myself when I pulled the start cord. It can't be this simple I said to myself. VROOOOM!!! Here is my final statement... UN-FREAKING-BELIEVEABLE!!!
Worked great! My mower isn’t quite the same, but your video gave me inspiration on where to look. After taking apart the carburetor (and leaking a bit of gas onto my hands) and reassembling, it started on the 3rd pull! I was about ready to just go out and buy an electric mower, but your trick saved me hundreds. Thank you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I mow my lawn and my neighbor's lawn, front and back once a week here in Austin, TX 8 months out of the year and I've had a very hard time keeping my mower running. I've been told that water gets in the line and then I need a carb rebuild, and tune up while their at it. Ha, this very simple fix saved me $175 once or twice a year getting my lawn mower working again. Granted, I did pour Iso Heet in my gas tank before the gas and that may have helped finish the cleaning, but it was definitely this tip that got it running again!
Yep or use something like Sea Foam which basically keep things from getting mucked up. When mower sits with gas there will be a varnish deposit in those places which keeps the fuel from flowing properly. Sea Foam will help remove this varnish.
I can’t find the support and donate button on your site, but this worked for me. Mower had been stored for two seasons and prepped with oil change and filter yesterday. Couldn’t get it to work. Watched your video, drained my gasoline and followed directions. Unplugged spark plug, unbolted thingy and cleaned it out. Worked as advertised. Thanks.
Recently my 3 yo mower started playing up on me. It could start a few times in a day and then I'd have to wait for the next day to use it again. After watching this video and some other related videos I decided to give it a go. I cleaned that bolt with a paper clip, also replaced the filter. Along the way I tilted the mower the wrong way while checking the blades and caused petrol leak..haha....but over all, the mower is now easy to start as the day I bought it. I had also checked the service cost in a local mower shop, which quoted about 120 to 200 NZD. This video saved me the money. Thanks man.
Awesome! I'm glad it worked for you. Feel free to support my channel if you'd like. Donations are never expected...but surely Always Appreciated! Thx for watching!
Great video, thanks. Try letting a little gas run though the fuel line to the bottom of the carburetor when you remove the bowl - catch it with a paper towel so you can see if any gunk is coming out of the gas tank and fuel line with the gas - the same kind of gunk that clogged up the holes in the first place. After cleaning the bolt, be sure to turn it upside down and gently tap it on a fairly soft surface to remove any gunk that might still be in the bolt. I noticed the gasket around the bolt appeared to be torn - think about replacing it to avoid future leaks from the bottom of that bowl.
7K thumbs up x $100 each mean you have collectively saved us all almost a $1 million! A 10mm socket, a dixie cup, and 2 minutes of sitting on the garage floor saved me SOOOO much time and energy. My wife says thank you!
Thank you!! You saved me $195 (what I usually pay the lawn repair shop for diagnostics and repairs here in California). It worked and I am about to go out and mow the lawn!
Thank you very much for this video. I removed the carburetor cover, cleaned the nozzle with a bread packet tie and put it all back together and the mower started up. You saved us money and not having a mower for a week. Thank you
Holy crap, it worked! I replaced the spark plug, checked all the connections, did some other basic maintenance while I was at it, but it wasn't until I tried you suggestion that it would actually start up.
Awesome! I'm glad it worked for you! Feel free to support my channel if you're so inclined. Donations are never expected...but they're ALWAYS Appreciated! Thx for watching!
I just want to thank you for the video and saving me time and money . I was about to throw it out today and something told me check UA-cam and your video came right up.
TIP: Pinch off rubber fuel /gas/petrol line with locking Vise grips so it doesn't spill all over or pour gas out into pan out of fuel tank, doing two people is easier. Those holes are what feed the fuel to the engine & small pieces of grass, dirt or even plastic from manufacturing can plug them. As well this drians any possible water that may have collected in the fuel bowl.
Thank you so much! You just helped me, a mentally ill person, fix his lawn mower with a flathead screw driver and two plies of toilet paper! I will consider donating if and when I can. God bless you!
I was going to make fun of this but the bread tie is a great carb cleaning tool. Of course not all mowers are the same, but it seems like you've helped many people which is neat! Really if you empty the old gas from the tank and bowl, change the oil every year or two, and run a little Seafoam the first of the year, your mower should be very low maintenance. Don't let it get water in it, and check the oil before you use it. $175?? Wow. Also be sure your blade doesn't become loose or too dull. And any time you work on a mower it's not a bad idea to disconnect the spark plug wire.
Barrett Barker, It's okay to make fun of youtube videos from time to time. Yes, this seems to have helped a lot of people....and all the things you suggested are fantastic additions to keeping a machine running well for years. Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe! DANDLINC.
I was shocked how well this fix worked on an old Craftsman lawn mower with a briggs & stratton engine. It wouldn't start after countless pulls. All I did was poke the holes of that bolt with a twist tie and it started on the first pull! Thanks a ton!
Worked like a charm....I had run carb cleaner thru the mower and it ran until I quit spraying the cleaner. No matter how much I primed it would not start. Followed the directions in video and it started first pull......THANKS!!!!
After replacing spark plug, replacing old gas and cleaning air filter I found your video. I have different model, couldn't find the bolt, used a paperclip in area below air filter. It works again!!!! The check is in the mail.
+DANDLINC thank you for taking the time to make this video. I'm one of those people that really enjoy watching how to videos because I learn allot of really useful techniques. I was at my buddies house for a BBQ and we started talking about the upcoming winter and shoveling. We live in Chicago. He mentioned he had to shovel all last winter because he forgot to burn out the gas in his snowblower the winter before and his snowblower wouldn't work. While the carburetor wasn't exactly the same no pinholes in the bottom bolt instead was in a stem leading into the bowl the idea was the same and I was able to repair it in less than ten minutes. My buddy saved allot of cash and I'm sure backaches this coming winter. I was able to help a buddy I'm not very mechanically inclined so felt pretty good. Thanks again.
The "bolt" is a jet that feeds the gas into the mower from the bowl. This is the problem with 90% to 95% of the time. To confirm this problem before repair, drizzle a little gas into the carb and it should run for just a while. This tells you the mower cannot get it"s own fuel.
thank you to post this video. solved my problem . I didn't use my lawnmower for year and half. not starting tried for half an hour after I changed the plug and new fresh gas. no luck. I drained the old gas in cup as you have mentioned in video. started right away. thanks again
Fantastic! Glad to hear it! Thx for watching and if you're so inclined, please consider a small donation to my channel, donations are never expected but always appreciate. Now go mow!!
My problem wasn't the bolt on the carborator, it was clean as a whistle, the gas was just old. But your video got me to drain out the old fuel and found a nasty clogged air filter. Thank you.
After taking that bolt out, above the bolt is a jet valve. You can use the same wire and stick it through the valve to clean it out also. A can of carb clean with the straw, stick the straw in the hole of the jet vale and blast carb cleaner into it. Most of the time it will stop it from idling up and down.
Thank you so much...worked like a charm. Had mower in garage for the winter and struggled for three days to get it started, took your advice and got it started first time.

Thanks so much...This really worked...Mower ran fine for the first few yrs, wouldn't stay on...Bread tie really worked!!!...Thought this would COST!!!..😊
now days, leaving old fuel in causes the seat up inside that bowl to swell up. it is pressed in and has to be removed with a dental pick. If your mower floods,or will start on choke or primer only, chances are that seat is swelled up. you will have to remove the carb, turn it upside down, remove the float and needle. that little seat is only a few dollars. next year, drain the gas, dont leave it in. Number one problem with mowers now is gasline gets disolved by bad gas and plugs the jets and the seat swells up. plan on changing the gas line also. I use snowmobile clear gasline now,it doesnt break down.
Thank you! My mower wouldn’t start. I did exactly what you said and it started right up. I also cleaned the air filter. You saved me lots of money and time.Thank you!
use premium fuel in small engine , for some reason it works better and does not gum up in a carburetor after long storage , second if you have a fuel valve turn it off while the engine is running and wait until the fuel dries out from the carburetor , Fuel left in the carburetor for a long time will dry up and damage the carburetor , installing a fuel shut off valve is easy , If engine is hard to start remove the spark plug and use a propane torch burn off the Corbin residue and whatever might be on the spark plug , I do it until the Central Electric and the ground electroid get red hot , of course wait until the spark plug cool down before reinstalling it , in the Old Country Palestine we used to put a small amount of gasoline on the ground put the spark plug in the middle of it and set it on fire , that always worked to get us out of a jam ,
Thanks for the post, fixed it in 15 minutes flat! Zero cost. I owe you a beer.

use ethanol free gas. ethanol is poison to small engines.
After 2 days of not starting, it started 1st try after this tip! Thank You!
This really works I just fixed my mower. Thank you man.
Thank you,Thank you,Thank you.AMAZING.Ive never been so happy to mow a Lawn.Worked 1st pull.
I did exactly as you indicated and my lawnmower stared right away. Thanks for posting the video.
+Carlos C Rodgers Fantastic!
Who did it stare at? JK, I know what you meant. ;)
Just saw this note...Glad it helped!
Yep or use something like Sea Foam which basically keep things from getting mucked up. When mower sits with gas there will be a varnish deposit in those places which keeps the fuel from flowing properly. Sea Foam will help remove this varnish.
chascorn
Paul Rebman, Use seafoam. 1oz. per gallon plus a little extra in the tank, it works wonders.

Thanks man.
Fantastic to hear! Congrats. Thx for watching...feel free to slide some of that saving my way via a teeeenny tiiiiiiiiiny donation. LOL!
Changed the air filter and the spark plugs for the start of spring. Nothing.
Did this. Worked like a charm. Thank You.
I just did that now. fingers crossed this works ima try it
Thanks so much...it worked perfectly to let my mower keep running!!
Edward, glad it worked! Thx for watching!
I watched this video skeptically, then tried it myself... Et voila - it started on the first pull! THAAAANKS A MILLION!
I tried everything else first and nothing worked. I found your video and this got my mower working again! Thanks so much!
+Glenn Burn Glad it helped Glenn, thanks for watching. If you're really happy, feel free to make a donation to my channel. Now get mowing!
Thank you!! You saved me $195 (what I usually pay the lawn repair shop for diagnostics and repairs here in California). It worked and I am about to go out and mow the lawn!
Oh man, thanks so much for sharing this! It was the first vid that popped up and your trick worked like a charm. I owe you one!
Thank you very much for this video. I removed the carburetor cover, cleaned the nozzle with a bread packet tie and put it all back together and the mower started up. You saved us money and not having a mower for a week. Thank you
bam! fixed my lawnmower right up! thanks!
Holy crap, it worked! I replaced the spark plug, checked all the connections, did some other basic maintenance while I was at it, but it wasn't until I tried you suggestion that it would actually start up.
My mower is fixed. Thanks a million
Awesome! I'm glad it worked for you! Feel free to support my channel if you're so inclined. Donations are never expected...but they're ALWAYS Appreciated! Thx for watching!
This totally worked !! I am delighted and grateful !! So thankful I don’t have to go buy a new mower 🙂
thanks! It worked and cleaned my mower THANKS!!!!! :)
Glad it worked! Thanks for watching.
Also shared to my fb, take care
Thanks Bud !!!...I changed my spark plug, air filter and oil ..still wouldn't start... until I tried what showed me and it started right up!!!
SuperNick090! Thx for watching and I'm stoked it worked for you! Woot Woot!!!!
Worked like a charm....I had run carb cleaner thru the mower and it ran until I quit spraying the cleaner. No matter how much I primed it would not start. Followed the directions in video and it started first pull......THANKS!!!!
That was exactly what it needed. THANKS!!
After replacing spark plug, replacing old gas and cleaning air filter I found your video.
I have different model, couldn't find the bolt, used a paperclip in area below air filter. It works again!!!! The check is in the mail.
worked like a charm! thank you so much!

Thanks man. Tried this and it worked a treat. my mower now runs better than when I first bought it. Thanks very much!
Thanks so much ! Worked like a charm !
+Will G Great News! I'm glad it helped and thx for watching!
thank you to post this video. solved my problem . I didn't use my lawnmower for year and half. not starting tried for half an hour after I changed the plug and new fresh gas. no luck. I drained the old gas in cup as you have mentioned in video. started right away. thanks again
Just did this and my old Murray runs like new. Thanks!
Fantastic! Glad to hear it! Thx for watching and if you're so inclined, please consider a small donation to my channel, donations are never expected but always appreciate. Now go mow!!
Simple Man it’s called cleaning the carb
One of the simplest and most helpful views on UA-cam!!. This worked like a champ 🏆 👌
My problem wasn't the bolt on the carborator, it was clean as a whistle, the gas was just old. But your video got me to drain out the old fuel and found a nasty clogged air filter. Thank you.
Awesome! Glad it inadvertently worked! LOL. Thx for watching.
I just do the same thing to a junk mower today and and works well now😁 thank you for sharing bruu!
After taking that bolt out, above the bolt is a jet valve. You can use the same wire and stick it through the valve to clean it out also. A can of carb clean with the straw, stick the straw in the hole of the jet vale and blast carb cleaner into it. Most of the time it will stop it from idling up and down.
+Camp Freedom VT Excellent tip. Thx for watching!
Camp Freedom VT up
Thank you so much...worked like a charm. Had mower in garage for the winter and struggled for three days to get it started, took your advice and got it started first time.
It worked!!!!!! I owe you $80 for a shop repair! Or case of your favorite beverage!
it worked for me too ☺
+Steve wGØAT Just saw this note...I'm glad it worked. Pls consider supporting my channel via the 'support' button on the main page. Every penny goes a long way. Thx for watching!
I owe him money for hamburgers. I will pay him next Tuesday. . .
Steve wGØAT good
Worked like magic after sitting for 7 years in my rental house storage shed. Thank You!!!
So will this fix my mowers cracked cylinder head?
+Alpatriod yes
+Alpatriod LOL! Absolutely!
+Alpatriod Might fix the carb, but wont fix the cracked cyl head.
Bread tie, probably not. JB Weld, everytime.
+Alpatriod - Apparently some are not familiar with sarcasm or humor.
Thanks so much...This really worked...Mower ran fine for the first few yrs, wouldn't stay on...Bread tie really worked!!!...Thought this would COST!!!..😊
he sounds like stephen wonderboy thompson 😂
Brilliant! You saved me $$...thank you sir....started cranking again after going dead. My lawn is saved!
now days, leaving old fuel in causes the seat up inside that bowl to swell up. it is pressed in and has to be removed with a dental pick.
You saved me lots of money and time.Thank you!
use premium fuel in small engine , for some reason it works better and does not gum up in a carburetor after long storage ,
second if you have a fuel valve turn it off while the engine is running and wait until the fuel dries out from the carburetor ,
Fuel left in the carburetor for a long time will dry up and damage the carburetor , installing a fuel shut off valve is easy ,
If engine is hard to start remove the spark plug and use a propane torch burn off the Corbin residue and whatever might be on the spark plug , I do it until the Central Electric and the ground electroid get red hot , of course wait until the spark plug cool down before reinstalling it , in the Old Country Palestine we used to put a small amount of gasoline on the ground put the spark plug in the middle of it and set it on fire , that always worked to get us out of a jam ,
That is excellent advice. A few more pennies a week can save hundreds in repairs.
Nidal Shehadeh it's ethnol that kills the small engines.
I can t believe it it worked. Now that there snow on the groung. I will be ready come spring.....you are the man
