Narcissistic Supply: How Does it FEEL?

  • Two differences between compliments and narcissistic supply: fantasy and regulatory locus.
Persons with narcissistic style or disorder are dependent on supply for external regulation - and not only of sense of self-worth.
    How does it feel?
A rush or a high. Narcissistic elation or euphoria. Sense of omnipotence, invincibility, invulnerability, immunity to consequences of actions, decisions, and choices. Manic or hypomanic phase: anything is possible and achievable.
Delusional self-perceived creativity, insights, and discoveries (psychoticism)
Apotheosis: affirmed perfection and, therefore, lovability (countering the bad object). Mitigated separation insecurity (abandonment anxiety) and object constancy.
Expansive hyperreflexivity (psychotic): appropriating the environment to serve the narcissist's needs and agenda (they should be grateful!)
Cosmic justice restored: safety in an otherwise hostile and unpredictable world.
Haughty contempt coupled with idealization of sources in order to co-idealize.
Craving leads to compulsion-obsession and one track minded relentless pursuit.
Narcissistic supply universal drug akin to cocaine (which, indeed, induces grandiosity). Con artist gurus and coaches push it to manipulate their audience.
Empowered by technology, contemporary Humanity is comprised of 99% profoundly dumb people who compensate for their abysmal intellectual inferiority and nescience with pathetic and risible grandiosity and with insufferable victimhood entitlement.
The remaining 1% are truly gifted and endowed individuals whose veritable superiority renders them contemptuous and haughty - which is self-defeating.
So, in both classes of people: impaired reality testing and delusionality.

As a kid growing up my narcissistic father used to say all the time “ I’m a legend in my own mind”. I always thought he was trying to be funny but in retrospect he was being serious 🧐

Seeing them as cocaine addicts is helpful. He kept saying he didn’t mean to hurt people. It’s true that he hurts people, and it may also be true that his intent wasn’t to cause pain. He’s chasing his addiction because without supply he’ll collapse.

@@mec.laurapalmer7155 its like living with an invisible person, he is visible to rest of the world but for you he is never there, you can’t share ANYTHING , he was intentionally absent in all of my hardest times like sugery, childbirth, when i needed a hand to hold. If we are sitting in a social gathering , he would act as if i never existed, ask me the meaning of cravings for love, attention, possession… he has deprived me big time so for me he is a hologram , a husband who was never there for me

This all sounds very cult-like to me. There is no middle ground. Either you are with them or you are not. Independent thought is not allowed. Once programmed, it is highly difficult, if not impossible to break through their defenses and nonsense. Particularly when from one day to the next I am told I do not exist as a part of their world. It is crazy-making to say the least. These are not simple issues. Thank you for your videos!

It’s helped me in my healing to see that the narcissist’s actions are pretty compulsory; he does them literally to survive. Supply helps him feel perfect and deserving of love finally. He would collapse / die without these moments. Separating from “Mommy” is also compulsory. It couldn’t have gone any other way.
The one thing that trips me up though is he also has BPD traits (I felt he used me to help him regulate his intense emotions). If BPD people do get attached to people, why could he discard me so easily? Maybe the answer was, he just needed new, non-stale supply more than the stability I provided. (He has ADHD too.) And I think I started feeling disappointed by him and was giving less adulation.
Also, I guess he was so delusional and did crazy stuff to be w me in the beginning because I gave him such grade A supply. He told me I made him feel better than anyone ever had. Maybe he was telling the truth that losing that supply was painful. Maybe he was in pain. Maybe he moved on so quickly to survive. Had to harvest new energy to live.

Thank you! The comparison of supply to a drug is helpful because I know when addicts use, their drug of choice becomes a primary relationship and the partner becomes valued as what they can do for the addict. The addict is controlled by their addiction. The craving a highly emotional and painful experience ... I think the attitude has shifted to be more compassionate towards addicts and I believe it will towards narcissists. That doesn't change the fact that the codependent partners need a lot of help and I think they get overlooked and ridiculed. I think they are in the best position to help and that shouldn't be dismissed. That's my opinion. I think this comparison gives good perspective.

Professor l: so the personality of a person doés change when using coke for long periods of time, years? As you mentioned?
I had a discussion with a scientist here in the Netherlands and he said there wasn’t any prove for that yet and he told me the underlying personality is most probably amplified. Not changed. But I found it a very unsatisfactory answer from him. Coke damages the frontal lobes right? Or are the personality changes due to coke reversed when the coke is no longer consumed? Without permanent damage (i mean like 4,8,10 years of addiction) to the brain and personality? Thank you
