1. Write a song about how your brother pushed you to be who you are. 2. Dress it up as a “Praise and Worship” song, mocking that style. 3. Perform it with your group that mocks organized religion. 4. Watch as Christians lose their minds over a “devil worship” song. 5. Laugh.
Nice attempt at deflecting the true meaning of this song. To say it's not about satan insults intelligent discussion. It is what it is why try to hide it? No one is losing their mind, no one cares. We just find it amusing you aren't brave enough to stand behind the true meaning of the song.
Well, actually, this song is about the singer's older brother that died right before Ghost became famous. He was his idol, father figure, best friend. For example "He will lead the way into the void" = he died first. He spoke about it on a Swedish radio show last year. The fact that the lyrics can be about both the devil and his brother makes this song even more genious.
I was going to comment this myself... but I will just add to your comment. As you're probably more likely to read it than them or anyone else... haha. The song has its usual Ghost undertones... originally for their second album it was titled "She Is"... but was changed and put on the third album. "Special Ghoul" said the song was written [the chorus] about the singer's brother (who died suddenly of natural causes) and [rest of the lyrics] about a friend of the band who died by suicide. The bother introduced Tobias to all the things he loves now ... musically (so this is a younger brother 'worshiping' an older brother-just as you stated) and the friend who died wasn't a 'very close one, but one they felt very connected with anytime they were together.' basically the song is about loss and how one views it. The friend who died by suicide was a 'true Satanist'... so I find the line "He will lead the way into the void" the true view that Tobias has about the afterlife... there is nothing. No Hell like this one friend would have been expecting. No Heaven. Just a void. It naturally goes in Ghost's "complicated roundabout way" of making it true to the bands real message. Any religion is deception. This song can easily be sung by a church choir and people will see it as being about 'god' but its the ghost persona that make the message appear more sinister. This theme of 'deception' is explored further in the music video... they really have to watch Ghost for what it is... a full act: musically and visually.
Rin Lehtisaari Ghost is just a brilliant concept, so self aware and so perceptive to the world. So rich in symbolism with complex and dynamic meaning. To me, I think it's obvious that they think about their art as communication. They make it so that the reaction and the meaning that others perceive in their art becomes a part of their artwork. For many bands their music is about self expression, talking about their personal experiences or their own attitudes and if others can relate, that's fine but it's self centered compared to how Ghost make music. It is beautiful satire and intellectual poetry - musically, visually, lyrically and conceptually.
@Apathetic Apparition Never heard anyone talk about that as the meaning of the lyrics, but for all I know it might be part of it. Ghost do like to play with ambiguous meanings and multiple possible interpretations.
I love this song, because it feels like it's the biggest troll lol You could play this to a congregation, and slowly watch all their faces change expression as they realize 😂
Yeah most areas that they translated lucifer/helel ben schachar in the king james bible are actually talking about christ and are usually translated as light of the world, day star, etc.
Shane McGraw I just finished the tv show Lucifer and he’s called “the light bringer” by one of his family members (not gonna spoil who) so that makes sense too, well now I know why they call him that🙌🏼
Lucifer means “morning star” from Latin. Because then the brightest “object” visible on night or day was a star, they thought, but now we know is Venus, the planet. In Romania which we spoke the Vulgar Latin, from where the word originate, there is a poem “Luceafarul” that explain everything in a really long poem. Is actually like this song an anthem.
Ok lucifer is none existing lucifer literally means morning star light bringer in the bible it does menton lucifer the light bearer but it also says God is the light bearer morning star lucifer is god Satan is none existing on the account they reference more than one deity as the devil and reference people from the stories as lucifer or devil it's a front..btw satan or lucifer to most of us is different for religious people satan or lucifer represent enlightenment our freedom boone to answer to in a sense but religious people also have it twisted as a lucifer Ian or a satanist you can't harm a woman or child in any manner otherwise you can be casted out of church..the main goal is still the same as having unity but yeah I can't get into it much further right here
Ok, I'm back. I don't believe Jesus was The Deceiver, but he has been made into one. I think perhaps Jesus was a regular dude on the path like many of us are. A prophet, meaning he knew the real past, not a foreteller of the future...
I'm Christian and ghost is my favorite band. Why do so many Christians have issues with separating a fictional act with reality? Ghost is not just a band but a story. There's a time line of front men from the different papa Emritius to Cardinal Copia. It's a kick ass modern metal Broadway show.
I can, as a fellow Christian, understand others reluctance to listen to Ghost. They do come off as genuinely Satanic. However, I have seen interviews with several members of the band that make me question if they really are. That aside I like the band and even if they are actually worshiping Satan I would like to think that I can listen to and like a song without God damning me to an eternity in hell. If that were the case then pretty much everyone is screwed. That would be like watching a horror film about a demon and being told you were going to hell.
@@williammorgan5987 lol I have seen that (a couple times) & thats the only time I have heard them (tobias) cuss, but it is funny & absolutely adorable. I love Ghost.
Proclaiming to be a Christian doesn't really mean anything anyway. Christians can and will interprete things in wildly different ways. Like lots of people, they just adopt their parents' beliefs or subscribe to religion based on arbitrary reasons. Heck, loads of Christians don't even bother reading the bible. Not that I think they should, but I just think the notion that Christians are united is hilarious. The only way they're united is in their folly.
"Nostra dis pater" is "Our Father of Wealth". It's a reference to a roman deity of the Underworld. "Nostra Alma Mater" is literally "Our Nuturing Mother" (Which is why people refer to their former schools that way), and is being used to indicate how Satan helps you grow/improve (In the context of the song). Interpreting the latter as a sort of dualistic male/female dynamic is also possible ala some occult traditions.
Tobias gave an interview about this song and it was originally about a woman... she is and was in Italian... it’s one of their original songs and they could never work it into previous albums... the song progressed to HE IS and there is some allusion to a friend that committed suicide. Like most of their songs... really not about Satan at all.
@TheGodEmperorofMankind maybe we have a different understanding of what triggered means. But when two people go into depth and discuss the lyrics and try to find the meaning of them like they have in this one and countless others, to me that's not being triggered. Some Catholics/Cristians I know would not even bother listening or trying to understand and would just be pissed and throw it away, that to me is being triggered.
You guys missed the music video, very important from a Christian point of view. You guys should do another reaction for the official music video as a “Christians React”. Please please please
I think it's good they listened to the lyrics video first. The video tells a different story than the lyrics of the song. They should definitely react to the video as well tho.
'Nostro d'spater; n'ost alma mater' "Our Allfather and nourishing mother" First time viewer here. Hey, you gave it your best. I get it. I'm a Christian also and even though I love Ghost now, they can be a bit much at times. It took me a little while to fully 'get' Ghost too. The reality is that Ghost truly isn't an evil, subversive act pulling souls to Hell on a golden highway. You'd have to read and hear some of Tobias Forge's interviews to fully grasp Ghost. The most revealing ones are the ones he gives back home in his native Sweden. He tries to keep his US audience in the dark as much as possible because he's learned Americans prefer the mythology to the reality. 'He Is' has a verrrrry long, complex history. It's inspired musically by trashy Italian and Spanish musicals. It was a song he worked on for years before he finally got it right. Lyrically he finally got it to where he was happy with it when one of his mentors, Salim from the band Devil's Blood, committed suicide. But the chorus is actually about his older brother, a former punk rock guitarist in Sweden, who tragically died of an unknown heart disease when he was only in his late 30s. Because his older brother was his father figure, and his role model responsible for getting him into rock music and playing instruments, his dead brother is who he is thinking of when he says "He is insurrection, He is spite, He is the force that made me be" So as much as it may seem that 'He' is Satan, 'He' is actually his dead friends, mentors, and family members responsible for encouraging him to hone his craft and become the successful rock star he is today.
@ the difference between Hades and Satan is Hades is merely an overseer for all spirits. The underworld composed of Elysium (heaven) Asphodel (purgatory) and ... Tartarus (hell, although the mythology is disputed that Tartarus may be it's own place, a home for demons and monsters, and mortal hell elsewhere in the underworld) but the point is, Hades wouldn't directly punish people like the biblical Satan, nor directly reward them like God, rather a bureaucracy of lower class gods, demons and a few privileged mortals
Ghost has some of the most beautiful and elegant songs out there! I'm a Christian and Ghost is a band that should be a classic, they're really talented!
This song is great. Seems like a jab at mega-church evangelical music. But Tobias Forge also said it's mainly inspired by cheesy, euro-pop romantic singers like Eros Ramazzotti. The light thing in my opinion is bringing back the Lucifer thing, a being of light.
I agree, but it seems only at the start. I just don't think he knew they'd get this big this fast. But from that interview, he knew he had something special in his hands.
@@Jason17300 you sound like an idiot and christianity is not responsible for what took place. I dont believe in god or satan or any of that bullshit. Just what you said was stupid.
I am a Christian, but I felt a stronger beautiful presence through the adoration and veneration in this song than I ever have before in any music dedicated to Jesus. I think I might begin to re-think my faith.
hybridamerica, I know exactly what you're saying. I am a Christian, have played in a few praise bands, and I'm disturbed that recent Christian music seems so commercial and a lot like the same dribble you'd hear on Top 40 stations. It feels like it has no soul. This song, though I don't agree with the message, is well written and beautiful. Please don't question your faith because of lousy music. I'd love to find a Christian rock band that wrote and conveyed a message as well as Ghost does, but that won't make me change what I believe
I should have been a little more clear, I guess. I have been questioning my faith for around a year now... questions that no one has the answer to and that have actually gotten me in trouble with my church. This music really catches me off guard.
hybridamerica im literally having the same experience as you, but on the oppossite side of the coin. My faith didnt really exist for a long time, and ive been a fan of ghost a long time. But recently ive started beleiving in god because ive seen my spirit guide/guardian angel. And ive honestly had a heart to heart with god and the universe through meditation. Now i almost feel guilty for loving ghost, and im having some conflicting emotions about seeing ghost in person. I still really want to. But now through my awakening, it almost feels wrong, because i only want to attract positive energy. Yet somehow ghost still feels like a positive energy and theyve done so much for me. But a part of me says its negative. I just dont know what to do. Keep in mind, i havnt read the bible, and my beleif in god mostly came to me through intuition, and through positive intentioned meditation. Im still pretty lost as to whats right. I need to justify this almost to be okay with loving them. Because rn it almost feels like an affair. Personally, id just like to talk with ghost
I've lived and breathed the Bible for ever, it seems. Yet, if I'm honest with myself, I have to admit that nothing has once happened to me that can not be explained naturally. I feel as if I am stepping back and getting a clearer perspective. This adoration of Satan makes me think about Genesis and who really told the truth in that garden. God - from the start was hiding information from his creation... God - in fact, if he were perfect, ... why would he create in the first place and then... on top of all of it - have his creation rebel against him??? Nothing makes sense anymore.
What's wrong with the message? It's actually a tribute to his brother who died of heart failure, he even spoke about it on a radio station and confirmed it. It's just very intelligently written to keep in fitting with their theme and to imply a different meaning.
The whole thing about Ghost is that the satanism thing is just an act, they aren't genuinely against religion either. It's just for show. I'm a Christian and I personally love their songs to death because I realize that they aren't being serious, it's fun fictional music.
LordVader1094 Idk man.. if you get a chance read the interview in revolver Magazine with Tobias Forge (lead singer). Anyways, I love Jesus with all my heart and I listen to Ghost, I think they are a very very talented band. I saw them a few years ago and I will see them this December coming up.
+Joe Veach I have read that interview, and nothing about it really contradicts that they're theatrically making fun fictional music without being genuine satanists or against religion. If anything, he states very much to affirm such a thing once again as in all his previous interviews.
@@LordVader1094 ok.. either way I love them but when I saw them, I thinking 2016, Papa said something like " are you enjoying this Mass? Because that is what this is... a Mass for our dark lord" lol
What's funny is that if you played this song for a Christian that had never heard of Ghost, they'd love it under the presumption it's a Christian song.
Atheist, and former Pentecostal Christian here. Everything that follows is just how I view things. 1) Their Lyrics are absolutely fine, because Satan is a myth, Hell is a myth, just as the Abrahamic God is a myth. 2) IMHO if Satan was real and operated through anything, it would be through human greed, through Mammon, and he'd be doing a really, really good job. 3) There is a such a thing as nothingness when it comes to consciousness. For each of us, there was nothing before we were born; we didn't exist. After we die, we return to that proverbial void of non-existence. Furthermore, just because you cannot conceptualize a thing, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, or that its an invalid idea. 4) Black/Darkness is not a color. Because a black object absorbs all the colors of the visible spectrum and reflects none of them to the eyes. 5) The Bible is filled with contradictions. You obviously disagree, but it remains true, regardless, no matter how many cartwheels of logic that Christian theologians have to perform to try to explain them away. 6) Spitefulness is indeed irrational. However, it can be easily argued that if you have a deep religious faith that leads you to deny facts, then that faith is irrational. 7) Vin is absolutely correct that cutting people out of your life doesn't also mean that you are holding a grudge. You can quite rationally cut toxic people out of your life without holding an active grudge against those people. 8) While Catholics are indeed good at guilt, they hardly hold a monopoly on it. As a former Pentecostal Christian, I had to work through a ton of guilt that my upbringing foisted upon me. 9) Sori's 8.5 is correct. Sorry Vin. ;) All that said, I give you kudos for being open-minded enough to listen to bands like GHOST. You both sound like great people, and you're a credit to Christianity. Keep up the great work!
corvus1970 - fantastic! Couldn’t agree more on every point. I rate the song higher though as it is currently my favorite and the video only enhances the experience.
BIG recommendation with future Ghost reactions -- you two need to watch either LIVE versions or official VIDEO of their songs when reviewing. This will give a huge insight into what the thrust of what the song meaning and lyric "ACT--UALL--YEE" is (or at least what they claim they want to present as the focus)! In some cases the subtle lyrical section is illuminated in an even more blatant twist, same with their performances. This is something you don't really get from a simple lyric video or music only version; Ghost is very visual with their presentation.
VinAnd Sori I was wondering why you didn’t watch the music videos, at _least_ from where you’re sitting if you can’t show the stuff on screen in the videos. The music videos are meant to be companions to the songs. Most of the fans that “correct” you (although Ghost fans can be snobbish, this coming from one) are doing so because the band’s message and shtick are obviously are in good fun if you look at it the way the band meant to present it.
We got spooked one time Bc we attached an official vid and UA-cam blocked it. Now I will say that never happened with ghost, so the next time, we’ll try for them. It’s seems more than most bands the visuals and the vids are attached pretty close to the lyrics
i'm pretty comfortable agreeing with sixstringpsycho on that one, lol. were i to make something of a comparison, i would say they're more Alice Cooper than Marilyn Manson. we all know Alice Cooper isn't *actually* hanging/dismembering himself or eating dead babies. some of my christian friends who are also fans of good music were really hesitant to like ghost, would say things like "i really don't want to like them, i almost hate to admit that i enjoy their music" and then when they saw the band, they were blown away by how good their performances actually are. i've won a few converts that way, lol. it's all meant in fun. sacrilegious, tasty fun.
Yep, prejudging someone and supposing to know why they have the tattoos and why they had them done at specific points in their life and what they actually mean. Ignorant!
@@poserdisposer6460 well, Vin, or whatever his name is, looks dumb when he does his stupid air guitar. And he looks dumb when he berates his wife for not having his high-and-mighty knowledge of the book he believes in.
Michael Steele people following all religions and atheist say allot of crazy shit. I guesd thats just what happens when u take from a sample group that big
Whenever you only have one mental model to see the world through, you'll inevitably try to fit everything you observe into that model! Expand your horizons!
I went to thier Houston concert a few months ago. And I'm going to see them again in a couple months. I'm a god fearing man...but to me, a good band is a good band. I don't take them litteral and I'm more into the rythm and guitars than the devil stuff. They ARE in a way moving away from that a little.
Autumn Sunset let me tell you something...I have been to a few concerts in my day...but in that hall in Houston, when MIASAMA played...the bass fucking almost tore the building down! And when you shut your eyes and let that song take you, there is no Satan or bad shit if it already isn't in you, it's pure vibe music that went straight to your being and ROCKED IT.
Your reactions are pretty much the same as mine when I go to a Christian establishment and hear music about how someone can't live without Jesus. As someone who doesn't believe in Jesus, The Devil, Odin, Ra, or anyone with no solid proof of existing, I just hear good music and bad music, and Ghost is great music!
The song writing and orchestration in this song is fantastic. The arrangement of the whole song is brilliant. Sori is exactly like my wife. She has a love/hate relationship with this band. Loves the music because of how well it is presented but the lyrics freak her out. You should soon do their new song Dance Macabre, Ill be dammed if you dont listen to this song and dance your ass off.
Becky Leavitt Where's the deception? It's a beautiful hymn to Lucifer. There's nothing secret or hidden about it, and Ghost makes the lyrics very clear on their own channel. I'm curious as to why you call it "deception," though.
Why listening to Ghost is Satan worship? They're not even satanists, the whole purpose of Tobias is to have a theatrical band which the theme is Satan, something that's unusual. It's so hard to listen and enjoy a song? Or you became a christian just by listening Jesus songs?
I don't know if anyone else brought this up or not but it would have been good to watch the actual music video (you would have to had censor it at a couple of points though). In the music video they do a scene as one of those fake faith healers that put their hands on peoples heads and they shake to the ground. If you still have not seen that video watch it. The lyrics work even better in both regards with that video.
Nostro dis pater "Father (of) our god" - Latin (I went to Seminary) Nost'ralma mater - "Our Nourishing Mother" - again, Latin contraction. This song is about the loss of his brother, and hoping he went to God. His brother led the way into the void for the family. That's about it. Slayer was another band that everyone thought was "Satanic", but turns out, Tom Araya is a pretty devout Catholic. People read too much in to things for their own purposes. I doubt Tobias even cares what anyone thinks.
Hey there! Ex-Christian here, current atheist, not a satanist, but a pretty big Ghost fan. Normally not a big fan of UA-cam "reactions", but I love your discussions on Ghost songs. Gives perspective to people like me on how persons with different sets of beliefs see stuff like this. I agree that the Ghost fan base can be *very* "well, actually!" but I also do see that the bands tongue is planted firmly in its cheek with content like this, aiming primarily to be theatrical the same way a horror movie does. I'm personally attracted to the band because I find their songs very catchy, reminiscent of Blue Oyster Cult even. The Satan stuff doesn't bother me as I don't believe Satan exists. Just wanted to give my perspective on the band and to say that I very much appreciate hearing yours. I'll definitely be back next time you two do another Ghost discussion :)
I'm an atheist. I know, it's kind of a meme that you'll know someone is an atheist, because they'll make sure to tell you. Well, it's an important detail for the context of this story. I discovered Ghost around the time that they toured North America with Iron Maiden. This was just a couple years ago in 2016. I lost my faith a few years before that. I'm actually glad that I had never heard of them before that, because if I had I would have absolutely hated them for being satanic. I would have seen it as some anti-christ brainwashing material if I found them when I was still a true blue believer. Not having any belief in a god (or satan), I only see their music as art, inspired by the concept of satanism. Not the LaVeyan satanism, which doesn't claim belief in a literal devil, but actual theistic satanism. Being from a largely atheist populated country, I suspect they don't ACTUALLY believe the stuff they're writing about. I think they want to make good music. In interviews, they have said they like to provide a religious experience through their music, and they even call their concerts "rituals." I think this just further feeds into the shtick they have. They're dedicated to it.
ffs how hard is to understand that because writing lyrics using words like Satan etc doesn't mean that the musicians, the band are followers of Satan. Apologies but I am shocked about the primitive attitude some people have, the first thing that popped in my mind after reading your comment was "dumb". "absolutely hated them fr being satanistic" who the hell is satanistic, Ghost? Man, in the age internet people should do research but it seems we are just getting lazy and judgemental.
erzsebet naftalin you call this persok judgemental, yet your comment is FAR more judgemental. Its simply two perspectives. You see in a different way, so you cannot blame the other for notseeing in your way. As they are not you.
Triggered by a song that is (now) about Tobias’ brother, and primarily by the word Lucifer. As ‘He Is’ was intended to be ‘She Is’ - as in regards to Forge’s wife - the word Lucifer is Latin for Venus, makes sense, but in terms of his brother, Lucifer also translates to ‘light bringer’, too. Some religious types really do look too deep into things that they “think” will offend their faith. To be honest I find it laughable and cringeworthy. Here’s hoping that Ghost continue to trigger these mindless people for years to come. Hail Lucifer!😉
Simonize41 Tobias did confirm the song is “kind of” about Satan in a video interview. Wouldn’t be the first time he’s made a song with multiple levels of meaning. Good to see you showing respect for the Archangel.
I love the song n I'm Agnostic n I would never think it was something other than reffering to Satan cuz of the video. Being christian doesnt have anything to do with it and I was introduced to the band as it being about the Devil n stuff so I really dont think anyone without being told it's about his brother/wife would get it.
As an agnostic it's always funny to see Vin's reaction to something that doesn't "fit" his view of religion. He's so unease and not comfortable at all. Sori is just like "I like this song" and all that, but Vin is like... "No... I don't ... nope ... good song and, but...". It's 2020 March and I wonder why would a God allow such a virus to spread all over the world. Isn't that something that a God would not allow, and He would do everything to prevent such a thing happening? And please do not say 'Gods ways are mysterious". Nothing doesn't happen for a reason. Things just happen.
@@hollyroxy25 I dunno. Because god's supposed to be a caring entity? If a higher power wants me to believe in them, they can show themselves and stop some of the bullshit that happens here on Earth, and actually let us see them. None of this "I work in mysterious ways that none of you can understand".
Tobias has said in interviews that this song was written for his brother who inspired him to make music and passed away very young (the verse) and his wife (the rest of the song). The song was going to be named lei è (italian for she is). Of course ghost like leaving things up to interpretation but it's important to point out that they chose to interpret it like that!!!
Great reaction. The "world in flames" is a theme throughout the album (Meliora), kind of a "hell on earth" type deal. The last song on the album even goes "The world is on fire, and you are here to stay and burn with me" (Deus in Absentia). Their first album was about the coming of the Antichrist, the second was about his arrival, and the third (this one) was about hell on earth, basically. The new one is about death.
Ketunloikka I would take dark mother divine or beyond the horizon ( I like the tone an punchy riff more) and from RC I would take 666 or In Yumen / Xibalba. Less heavy lyrics but with better hidden meanings to analyze.
LTSMKASTRY Im good with anything from Dissection. Reinkaos just probably have better lyrics to breakdown from christian perspective. One would be black dragon.
Monstrance Clock with the live video that the 'Noisey' channel recorded would be awesome....I'm still not sure if Vin and Sori know what the band looks like. lol
Their sound is my favorite thing about Ghost. I'm a big classic rock and metal guy, so I don't really listen to new stuff (outside of Ghost). Ghost's sound to me is like an homage to so many classic bands.
Most people undoubtedly listens to Ghost primarily for the music. The clever lyrics and such is just a creative bonus. Forge, the main man, has stated though that he had a spell with Satanism in his troubled youth. He might still be somewhat into it, but I think it's clear it's mostly for the image/show.
"If I was the devil, I'd be more operative in Ghost then I would be........." I think you *almost* got the point of the song. You really need to see the video. This song was meant to be a parody of Christian rock, and in the video he does a parody of Jim Jones. If for those of us who don't believe in Satan, we all still except that there are bad people who try to convince their victims that they are great people. Jim Jones convinced people that he was their ticket to salvation, and they were all murdered as a result.
The lyrics don't entirely match up with that statement, it being about his brother. I find it hard to believe that talking about Lucifer somehow translates to someone's real life brother and a dedication to their being and eventual death.
Really? Cuz the translated Latin parts are literally “our force driving father”, you fucking idiot. I’m tired of all the ghost apologists saying this song is about his brother regardless of what TF says. I can read and understand words “ACTUALLY”. You’re exactly the person he’s talking about in the first 2 minutes of the video. Our society is doomed
Doesn't this song sound ALOT like a song of praise you would hear at any church including the folk roots? That tells you they have attended a few Masses and/or Sermons in their lifetime. Lol.
Sure they did - then they did the same, but with their souls unchained - that's why it resonates with free-thinking people so well. BTW: not even that much into Ghost personally - I like some songs of theirs, but in my mind I classify them as "cute" and that's it.
Tobias was raised by a strict “Christian” step mother... he did not like her and rebelled. He’s also not a satanist... watch his videos... the nameless ghoul in all the interviews is him.
thomas dean Not entirely correct. It's him sometimes, but rings and tattoos give him away (two tours ago they changed out Water Ghoul with a girl from a led zep cover band. Sneaky Swedes...
There is one line from this song that I think sums up the Satanic movement pretty well "He is the disobedience that holds us together". Satanists have wide ranging sets of beliefs from one person to another, most atheist, some vaguely pagan. The main unified purpose of Satanism is to stand in the way of Christianity run amok. Historically the church labels their opponents as "Satanists", so we use that label for ourselves to say "Yes, we are against you, specifically".
Are these the type of self proclaimed christians? Cuz they dont seem like actual christians. At least not in the traditional sense that i was taught and brought up by
Its literally the only reason i watch them. So uptight yet they subject themselves to it over and over again lol. For views!!!! Wow. Talk about selling out. Listening to something that offends your deepest convictions for attention.
You guys need to have an nterview with Tobias Forge (the singer in Ghost), it would be really interesting to see what the whole meaning of their music is.
I think of the "void", or the lack of existence after death, as a comforting thought. There is no torment, lakes of fire, no hell, nor is there heaven where you're condemned to eternal praise of the creator. No judgment. No more reason to fear what happens after death than there is to fear 1832, I wasn't here to experience it, nor will I be here to experience 2132. Often in conversations with religious friends they'd explain sin as an option you have because of free will, but if sin doesn't exist in heaven, does free will? Just my two cents as an atheist/antitheist. Keep up the good work, enjoying the videos! Edit: I forgot a suggestion. Kreator - Enemy of God
The Devil’s Blood’s mastermind and overall fantastic musician, Selim Lemouchi. And he also played with Watain, and was a close friend to Erik Danielsson.
It has a dual meaning for him, he said the chorus is about his brother (who passed away) and the rest of the song is about a friend (the guy you are talking, I guess) At the same time, is about having faith in a force that will catch you when you die or something like that
TheSeventhFiction Selim was my friend I miss him every day. Still hang with his sis Farida. She was also the vocalist of my hometowns band The Devils Blood. Ghost is just for fun and not serious but Selim was very serious about Satanism.
Camryn Freeze I suppose. My point was that I’m not so sure how “Christian” these two are. Never heard “shit” and “fuck” so much from self-professed holy rollers.
I tried to check back to be sure...I've found many versions but I think it's more likely: Our God and Father, Our gracious Mother. There's no 'and' or 'Dei' (God) however so it's more like a poetic translation I guess.
I’m going to be honest, I did not expect a lot out of this video when it began, but I’m glad I stuck with it. I am a huuuge Ghost fan, and one of the things I love most about them is the way their music, particularly lyrics, make people feel and react and it also gives you a lot to think about. I enjoyed the points and views here. 😊
0:35 we only correct people when they miss the messaging of our favorite band. Like how Cirice, see-ris, is about the emotional manipulation that the church uses to create devoted followers.
Big Ghost fan here, also an atheist from an Irish Catholic family, all good people even if we disagree. I just wanted to say that I'm having a great time watching the two of you enjoy the music, parse the message without freaking out about it, etc. As has already been noted here, Ghost has no actual agenda, they're entertainers and they've hit upon a fantastic musical and visual package that really resonates - and if the music was overtly aggressive and the visual component was trashy, it wouldn't work. They make it majestic. My mom occasionally describes herself as a "recovering Catholic" and she loves this band for the same reasons I do - great songwriting, clever subversion, and the majestic yet self-effacing visual presentation that ties it all together. You can't really take this stuff too seriously, if anything it's satirizing both Christianity AND Satanism. Anyone approaching Ghost knowing that it's a grand joke poking fun at the institutions that we've adopted will wind up doing what the band actually hopes you'll do, which is have a great time and a few laughs. Cheers.
Vin & Sori, I read one of Nameless Ghouls (band members) stated there are various meanings of this song. But in 2014, one of Ghost's friends who also plays in another band committed suicide materialized the lyrics. I think Ghost is one of many bands use "religion" as a schtick or a gimmick since the days of Black Sabbath to Ozzy Osbourne. Even Alice Cooper started out using his version as a gimmick, but he toned it down today.
Anytime you watch or read an interview with a "Nameless Ghoul", its actually Tobias Forge (Aka Papa Emeritus/Cardinal Copia) who is speaking. And yes, Ghost uses religion as a shtick, because Forge considers religion to be a shtick in and of itself, and that its just another way to control people.
what if I told you sori that you can enjoy the lyrics because *drumroll* plot twist: lucifer/satan and god/jesus are actually the same entity? Now that was just a brainfart on my part, but isn't it interesting that how all the good things you attribute to God/Jesus are in this song and just because of the background you know from ghost you interpret it in a subtle indoctrination? Not let's turn that around and apply that to the christian perspective: So different after all ? I guess what I want to say is, are you sure you are reading enough into it? or you reading actually TOO MUCH into it ? Or it doesn't matter if Ghost have a satanic background if the music and lyrics makes you feel good and you interpret them in your own way? that there is no hidden agenda after it and Ghost just want to entertain and make people feel happy through their music? That their viewpoints (if written with subtle satanic intention, as the mastermind of deceiver he is) don't matter at all, because when a artist "releases" their art it is in the same way the "death" of the "author", since everyone interprets it to his/her own whim? just some food for thought, no definitive answers, just some questions to let the mind wander...
Oh, come on .. it's not just about the lyrics, is it? The melody, the instrumentation, the arrangement, the build up and sound mixing is absolutely fantastic here .. (I would never even listened to this band if it were not for this song).
Also, the lyrics are about his brother who inspired him to make music (the verse) and his wife (the rest of the song). The song was going to be named lei è (italian for she is). Of course ghost like leaving things up to interpretation but still i think they judged the lyrics a bit too harshly
When I first heard this song I was in a dark place and honestly it made me cry tears of joy. As a Christian it spooked me out quite a lot when I realised this song is about Lucifer. But to be honest He is known as the fallen angel, or the morning star. So the shining light thing made sense to me. It is absolutely deceptive and while there is nothing wrong with listening to the song and enjoying it from a musical/theoretical standpoint, it is important to understand the true message of the song. Satan works in many deceptive ways. He wants you to think he's your savior and friend. He wants you to follow him.... over the precipice. Be aware of this. God bless.
Thank your for making this aware to me, I personally love Ghost and their songs are beautiful. But I feel like the songs have impacted me to be more comfortable about the whole Satan subject. But I can definitely agree with you.
I think it's fascinating when these two talk about the mythology of christianity. Like the whole spiel about Lucifer, Jesus and the morning star. It's hilariously similar to how I talk about the lore of my favourite fictional worlds (like the WH40k universe or the A Song of Ice and Fire world). Except, you know, I know those aren't real.
For some reason I feel bad for them - initially I thought they can be saved, but now I have not that much faith in it... (yes, I am aware how absurd it sounds, but that's not my doing...)
@sebaschanable: As I see it, Sori ended up here after being part of some cult or whatever it was (they mention it sometimes, but never with much detail.) No doubt she is better now, but still... not fully alive, both of them, imo. Vin, on the other hand, escaped the horrors of "the city" (whatever atrocities he went through there) and sheltered himself under the Bible. Then they met and are here, but never truly escaped the past. They just may end up perpetuating the old story... seems they went full-steam ahead on that path. Sad.
My wife is christian, and goes to church regularly. She wears my Ghost shirt, went to a show, and loved every second. She always comments on hating their lyrics, but they are so catchy she can't help it.
Same as an active Christian that goes to a hip hop show and rap about excess, greed, money, fornicating and popping pills, or a Christian that is obsessed with celebrities and think of themselves as ugly and not pretty/handsome enough.
I'm not christian... I really like your videos and I've learnt many things from 'em... Keep up the good work you two! ... I can't believe you haven't done the reaction thing to some bands like "Dimmu Borgir"! I totally recommend you to do a video about songs like "The Serpentine Offering"
Actually..if you have Ghost , you have everything.

Matthew Selby I agree, when ghost covers a song it is ACTUALLY better than the original.
The Fire Breathing Dragon If course it is lol they're the greatest band going now
1. Write a song about how your brother pushed you to be who you are.
2. Dress it up as a “Praise and Worship” song, mocking that style.
3. Perform it with your group that mocks organized religion.
4. Watch as Christians lose their minds over a “devil worship” song.
5. Laugh.
Lol
This comment is honestly the best thing about this whole video being uploaded here
Hehe
Nice attempt at deflecting the true meaning of this song. To say it's not about satan insults intelligent discussion. It is what it is why try to hide it? No one is losing their mind, no one cares. We just find it amusing you aren't brave enough to stand behind the true meaning of the song.
@@runeghost4264 Tobias isn't a Satanist. Ghost isn't a Satanic band.
Y’all remember when papa said “I don’t think we’re wearing anymore makeup than anyone else here” at the Grammys?
That wasnt papa

Error* that wasn't Papa, that was a Nameless Ghoul.
That was Omega. Multi ghoul wasn't in the band then.
Sam Wait, there’s a “Multi Ghoul”? 😱
To be honest - Tobias (Ghost) could be singing about a recipe for Mac ‘n’ Cheese and I would still love this song.
Perfectly put
I Love Ghost and I love mac n cheese.. So that will be brilliant.
Or dog farts even.
Clutch sang about the recipe of a crabcake and it's genius.
I could see either papa III or Cardinal Copia singing a song about that, and I'm in love with the idea
Yes I seen this on an interview!!
@Apathetic Apparition well actually the music video is a parody on all those cults, but specifically about jim jones and jonestown.

Lucifer means "Bringer of Light" in Latin, so the lyrics make perfect sense.
Shane McGraw fun fact: matchsticks are called lucifers in various European languages :)
Jesus was also referred to as Lucifer and the Morning Star
“Stealing things that supposed to be for jesus?” Jesus doesn’t have a monopoly on language.

3verD3ad tey are not satanic. They even said that very clearly. The are not religious at all. Thats it.
If they did they wouldn't be christians.
They are playing characters. Tobias isn’t religious at all. It’s all for fun.
Christian here, I freaking LOVE Ghost as well. It's spiritual music. Every last song seems to be about spiritual seeking or Christian cosmology.
When the Christian reaction cusses more than ghost ever had
Lmao right!!! Exactly. Ghost don't cuss (if they have I have not heard). Hmmmmm🤔 interesting
They do a lot when they talk. Watch ghost talk about “the birds and the bees”
But these people cuss way more which is ironic
Ghost are too intellectual to cuss in there songwriting

"Nostra dis pater" is "Our Father of Wealth". It's a reference to a roman deity of the Underworld. "Nostra Alma Mater" is literally "Our Nuturing Mother" (Which is why people refer to their former schools that way), and is being used to indicate how Satan helps you grow/improve (In the context of the song). Interpreting the latter as a sort of dualistic male/female dynamic is also possible ala some occult traditions.
Whoa will! Thanks big guy !
Tobias gave an interview about this song and it was originally about a woman... she is and was in Italian... it’s one of their original songs and they could never work it into previous albums... the song progressed to HE IS and there is some allusion to a friend that committed suicide. Like most of their songs... really not about Satan at all.
I think watching christians get triggered by an opinion on something that isnt real is my fave past time
Ikr. These people are living memes.
They didn't even get triggered though ??
@TheGodEmperorofMankind maybe we have a different understanding of what triggered means. But when two people go into depth and discuss the lyrics and try to find the meaning of them like they have in this one and countless others, to me that's not being triggered. Some Catholics/Cristians I know would not even bother listening or trying to understand and would just be pissed and throw it away, that to me is being triggered.
@TheGodEmperorofMankind exactly, when do you see people who are triggered do this. Most times that just rant and don't bother to try to understand.
probly woulda got a more illicit response if they watched the actual music video for this song instead of one with lyrics only.. what a jip lol..

I think it's good they listened to the lyrics video first. The video tells a different story than the lyrics of the song. They should definitely react to the video as well tho.
'Nostro d'spater; n'ost alma mater'
"Our Allfather and nourishing mother"
First time viewer here.
Because his older brother was his father figure, and his role model responsible for getting him into rock music and playing instruments, his dead brother is who he is thinking of when he says "He is insurrection, He is spite, He is the force that made me be"
So as much as it may seem that 'He' is Satan, 'He' is actually his dead friends, mentors, and family members responsible for encouraging him to hone his craft and become the successful rock star he is today.
Nailed it. It's just so intelligently written to make it appear that it's keeping in line with their whole 'Satanic' theme.
Nostro dis pater: "Dis pater" or "Dispater" is a name for Pluto or Hades, the lord of riches and the underworld.
What eves man he building a church.
Absolutely! You nailed it on the head! Most people in America don't get it and take it for face value.
Yup, it's clearly about Lucifer : the Bringer of Light, also called the Morning Star.
If you watch the video, it's centered around an evangelical mega-church pastor.
Hadn't seen the video. I'm totally validated (yeah!).
Lokiskade That used to be Jesus but in history it ch anged and it reversed and the bringer of light suddenly was the devil.
I agree, but it seems only at the start. I just don't think he knew they'd get this big this fast. But from that interview, he knew he had something special in his hands.
I love how uncomfortable they were through the whole song. They wanted to like it but the song was about that icky devil, so it's now a "bad" song.

I was thinking the same.
Well Lucifer was the chief musician in heaven so it makes sense that he’d be producing the finest of music

Sorry Vin. ;)
All that said, I give you kudos for being open-minded enough to listen to bands like GHOST. You both sound like great people, and you're a credit to Christianity. Keep up the great work!

Good point !
Generally, I would say this is a bad idea. But when it comes to Ghost... they’re a live act. Period. Just as tight on the stage as in the studio.

Their opinion is pre determined by their religious beliefs. I'm soooo glad nothing has that sort of power over me.
I think you guys low key LIKE ghost. 😂🤙
I see what you did there!!
I went to thier Houston concert a few months ago. And I'm going to see them again in a couple months. I'm a god fearing man...but to me, a good band is a good band. I don't take them litteral and I'm more into the rythm and guitars than the devil stuff. They ARE in a way moving away from that a little.
Dude, did you get to see them play Miasma live? I don't care what faith you are, that song is a religious experience all by itself.
Mike Dank they aren't moving from the devil worship gimmic. It is the band. They moved from papa emeritus to cardinal copia
I love how Sori is just grooving to it, enjoying the music.

Since the first time I heard this song, I thought you could "Flip" a couple of lines and make it one of the best Christian Rock songs ever.
Omar Munoz my fiance is the same way, loves the sound doesn't like that it's all about Lucifer
Faith off that album is even better
Becky Leavitt I don't think anyone takes Ghost seriously
I don't know if anyone else brought this up or not but it would have been good to watch the actual music video (you would have to had censor it at a couple of points though). In the music video they do a scene as one of those fake faith healers that put their hands on peoples heads and they shake to the ground. If you still have not seen that video watch it. The lyrics work even better in both regards with that video.
and they also put in a millisecond image of Tony Alamo... certified garbage person.
Nostro dis pater "Father (of) our god" - Latin (I went to Seminary)
Nost'ralma mater - "Our Nourishing Mother" - again, Latin contraction.
This song fills my non existent soul with joy.
I'll definitely be back next time you two do another Ghost discussion :)

yesssss plz react to year zero from ghost
He’s a showman

Ghost - Monstrance Clock
Dissection - Nights blood/dark mother divine.
Rotting Christ - Threnody
Ketunloikka I would take dark mother divine or beyond the horizon ( I like the tone an punchy riff more) and from RC I would take 666 or In Yumen / Xibalba. Less heavy lyrics but with better hidden meanings to analyze.
LTSMKASTRY Im good with anything from Dissection. Reinkaos just probably have better lyrics to breakdown from christian perspective. One would be black dragon.
Monstrance Clock with the live video that the 'Noisey' channel recorded would be awesome....I'm still not sure if Vin and Sori know what the band looks like. lol
Dark mother!
Their sound is my favorite thing about Ghost. I'm a big classic rock and metal guy, so I don't really listen to new stuff (outside of Ghost). Ghost's sound to me is like an homage to so many classic bands.
The change of reaction from 4:15 (ahh, he is singing about god) to 4:22 (oh, maybe not) is wonderful!
that´s what they call real life! lol
This song won a grammy for best metal performance
Most people undoubtedly listens to Ghost primarily for the music. The clever lyrics and such is just a creative bonus.
Forge, the main man, has stated though that he had a spell with Satanism in his troubled youth. He might still be somewhat into it, but I think it's clear it's mostly for the image/show.
Satanist here, and I absolutely love this song!
it's funny because it sounds like a typical Christian song lol

"If I was the devil, I'd be more operative in Ghost then I would be........."
I think you *almost* got the point of the song.
The song is so good. Ghost is an awesome band. Love them.
my question is, how many Ghost fans also listen to Blue Oyster Cult? that Venn diagram has to be like a solid purple circle.

the jab Tobias takes at evangelism (in the official vid) is epic...
this song is acually about Tobias brother
A ghoul once said that "He is" was actually "She is" at first
The lyrics don't entirely match up with that statement, it being about his brother. I find it hard to believe that talking about Lucifer somehow translates to someone's real life brother and a dedication to their being and eventual death.
Moshy i know i am very late but it used to be about his wife but they changed it because his brother died
Nope

You. Need. To. Watch. This. With. The. Video
Seeing you guys suffer cognitive dissonance every time you hear this band is amusing.

Ghost is so good at trolling through their lyrics.
Vin looked so bored and Sori’s dark side came out laughing and smiling. God I love Ghost.
“If I am the devil(the evil one) “… I would operate within Christianity, the ultimate oppressor of mankind. That’s the trick the devil did.
Sori would love "Life Eternal" from the new Ghost album "Prequelle". You need to give it a listen
I remember at one point hearing Tobias (the singer) saying this was actually written about a friend and hero of his that committed suicide
The lyrics materialized after the suicide of a fellow musician/guitarist.
The Devil’s Blood’s mastermind and overall fantastic musician, Selim Lemouchi. And he also played with Watain, and was a close friend to Erik Danielsson.
It has a dual meaning for him, he said the chorus is about his brother (who passed away) and the rest of the song is about a friend (the guy you are talking, I guess)
At the same time, is about having faith in a force that will catch you when you die or something like that
TheSeventhFiction Selim was my friend I miss him every day. Still hang with his sis Farida. She was also the vocalist of my hometowns band The Devils Blood. Ghost is just for fun and not serious but Selim was very serious about Satanism.
"...when Jesus was speaking through the burning bush..." Ummm, the whole burning bush thing was the Old Testament. Jesus wasn't around at that point.
The pre-incarnate Jesus spoke through the burning bush... This is where the Trinity comes into play. Jesus always has been.

0:35 we only correct people when they miss the messaging of our favorite band. Like how Cirice, see-ris, is about the emotional manipulation that the church uses to create devoted followers.
Every Ghost review Vin is like, OMG the melody, OMG the song-writing, OMG the depth of meaning. Result: 5/10. Sori is right, Vin is always wrong.
I played this song for my Christian Mom, she loved it! Haha. Come to the dark side mama. 😂 👿
what if I told you sori that you can enjoy the lyrics because *drumroll* plot twist: lucifer/satan and god/jesus are actually the same entity?
Yep couldn't have said it better.
For some reason I feel bad for them - initially I thought they can be saved, but now I have not that much faith in it... (yes, I am aware how absurd it sounds, but that's not my doing...)
Leeloo Minai Same way I felt about my parents. Except worse cuz I'm what got them into that life. On account of me being brainwashed at a young age.
Sad.
I can hear your fedora through the computer my dude
