The thing to remember with Ghost is that it's a show. He's telling a story. Imagine if Satanism was modeled on traditional Christianity. That's the story that Ghost is telling. This song is a hymn. Most of their songs aren't like this though. I recommend also checking out the song Cirice.
Also, Selim, the song he is was dedicated to was a theistic satanist who played in Watain and the devil's blood, also hardcore theistic satanists. I think people underestimate the power of the band when they call it a "show" or troll band who purely deal in sarcasm.
They’re modeled as a mockery of the Catholic Church in specific. That’s why they use the Pope and cardinal image, and make specific digs at Catholicism.
The song also has a double meaning. It is also about the main artist's brother who committed suicide. He said when he originally wrote this it didn't speak to him but when he lost his brother finishing the lyrics really came together and it took on a new life.
I'm still learning about Ghost (I've been listening to them for maybe 4 or 5 days now) but it seems that the best way I've found to describe them so far is as a concept act. They go far beyond a concept album or even an entire rock opera, and into the realm of an entire rock serial. There's an intricate backstory, character arcs and plot twists, and I love it. The last band I came across that did anything like this was Gorillaz, and even they didn't go nearly as far with combining their narrative with the live performances. What Ghost do seems genius, and it's made me want to follow and absorb every bit of their narrative and ongoing story that I can get hold of.
I am too. I just find it so fascinating. This is all very ancient stuff, that goes way back before Judeo-Christian times. He Is is just beautiful, it could be about a creator or destroyer.
Dude, you got to dig into the whole Ghost universe! For videos, I strongly recommend Cirice, Rats, Square hammer or Dance Macabre. If you want lyrics and songs to interpret, go for Year Zero, Ritual, Deus in Absentia or the beautiful emotional Life Eternal. You have to see through a kind of tongue in cheek satanistic lense, and I strongly suggest that you do some google search around the band to get the big picture. Will follow your journey!
The creator of Ghost, Tobias Forge said in an interview that there is no religion in mind with these songs. It's a take on humanity and what we see as Satan or devil.
The thing I like most about your videos over almost all other reactors is how you break down lyrics and analyze possible meaning to them. its super interesting to watch.
One line I haven't seen explained in the comments: "The guidance of the morning star will lead the way into the void" The morning star is Venus. In classical mythology, this is Lucifer. The name literally translates to "light bearer" from Latin this is also why they keep referring to light throughout the song. Venus is refered to as the morning star because it's so bright compared to everything else that it's generally the last "star" to disappear in the morning. So what they're saying here is that they're going to follow Lucifer's guiding light into the unknown. Possibly into the afterlife, would be my interpretation.
@@unreconstructed relatively recently the scientific world has accepted the fact that the "nothing" in the universe, if you want "black matter" is actually "something", we just didn't know it for a long time... it forces us to reevaluate the dogmas...
This song has dual meanings, one within the Ghost mythology and one that is a tribute to Tobias Forge's brother that died. What is interesting is the lyric, "Two star-crossed lovers reaching out to the beast with many names". Forge talked about how his brother exposed him to various rock bands, so it seems like this is talking about the "beast" being rock music itself and the "many names" being the bands themselves. How rock and metal was vilified in the 1980s makes sense with this also.
Here we go with the brother story again. The song might have been dedicated to his brother but the lyrics clearly lay out what the song is about....Satan.
Yes the band is very anti religious but also clearly been raised on it. So that is pretty much Ghost's thing. They are really artistic and creative with amazing live performances and alot of quality music.
no, there was no being raised in religion for Tobias Forge. He was raised in a non religious home. Yes, the troll element is real, but it isn't just Christians, but God they are intending to troll. I would suggest that people tend to apply their own views to what they like to listen to, despite what is right there in plain sight. I like Ghost's music a lot. But, I try to be realistic about things.

I'd suggest you watch this video. I don't think this song can actually be separated from the visual commentary of the video. Ghost seems as much driven by the visual choices they make as they are by the music and lyrics. This whole thing was by design to be reminiscent of the shlock Christian rock of the 70's and 80's complete with the Jim Jones sunglasses and "revival" imagery that was common in all the evangelical churches of that era. It's a strong commentary that I don't think should be separated from the music. Nice first reaction of this. Well done.
I love Ghost. I got into them last year and loved the whole storyline “they” (it’s like one dude with hired musicians) created. It’s this whole story of an anti church (modeled after the Catholic Church but satanic.) There are characters and a story and it’s really fun. They had this whole series of short little episodes of them picking a new guy to lead the band bc the “papa” (the anti pope) was to old. It’s the same guy but he changed his face mask and character. I’m not even really into metal, I like some metal bands but not the genre as a whole. Ghost has this sound that’s like retro metal to me and though I don’t really like that type of metal, I like the way ghost does it. They just have this excellent vibe. Plus I like the way their sound evolves. Their earlier music was very heavy and then they have songs like he is that’s melodic and pretty. Which is a wonderful contrast to the satanic lyrics. (The music vid is great, it has a character modeled after Jim Jones of the Jonestown death cult.) Then they have a song like Danse macabre that’s got like a dance beat to it. Plus that vid tells kind of the back story of how the aging papa first became papa. Anyways it fun and not to seriously.
They are not like real serious satanists but its their image. The whole lore and gig of Ghost is rock/metal comedy. After listening some more of their stuff I recommend watch some of their live performance. :)

Ghost is a satanistic band and one of the big points that are enjoyed by satanist is to mock religions that we consider to be irrational, most prominately, christianity. Ghost is pure theater. The music, the visuals, the lore around the band. Yes, Tobias skewers religion, but doesn't portray Satan as much better, just less deceptive. It's a hymn to the Adversary.
Ghost is pure theater. The music, the visuals, the lore around the band. Yes, Tobias skewers religion, but doesn't portray Satan as much better, just less deceptive. I also recommend "Cirice", which they one a Grammy for, but also a personal favorite of mine, "Faith". The way Cardinal Copia (Tobias Forge) delivers the tag line is quite sinister.
