    The fact Sori is such a big fan of Ghost's music goes to show how incredibly proficient they are at what they do - she's about as far from the target audience as it gets, and yet the music is appealing to the point where she loves it regardless of anything else.
    That is the magic of Ghost.

    • @Boons___1
      @Boons___1 6 років тому +48

      Vigridr Excactly this.
      Edit: And that is also why Ghost seems to get alot of hate from a part of the metal community. *Because* of the fact that they're so proficient in reaching "normal" people (who aren't avid music listeners or listen to metal in general).
      Put shortly,they're too mainstream for "us" (the "hardcore" part of the metal community).
      In my personal opinion though, I don't care about that. I'm not a Ghost fan by any means but I have to admit they have some really cool riffs in their discography.

    "Well aaaakshully!" =P
    So this is a cover of a song from 1986 by legendary Swedish punk rock band Imperiet. It was originally in Swedish but Imperiet made this English version as well.
    The writer of the song, Joakim Thåström, is notably very critical of religion but I don't think this song actually has ANYTHING to do with religion or faith. Not for it or against it or using it as most metal bands do to shock. It's just a parable using the story of Genesis and Babylon and general Christian imagery to make a secular indictment of humanity. It tells the story of the rise of humanity from cavemen to modern civilization and how we pretty much just fuck things up. In true punk spirit he doesn't have a very high opinion of humanity and certainly not the current world order, him being an anarkist at the time.

      I'm surprised I had to scroll this far down to find someone pointing out that this is a cover song, not a Ghost original. But I heard it from Ghost first and then found the original. It seems Ghost did a very faithful rendition of the song. Here's a question though: was the English version by Imperiet the first version or was it originally released in Swedish? I THINK I read on one lyric site that the English was first and then they later released it in Swedish....
      Vin & Sori: I'd like to see you react to other covers they have done including the Eurythmics, Echo and the Bunnymen, Abba, or even Leonard Cohen or the Beatles. OOOOH....how about the song "Crucified" which was originally done by Army of Lovers back in '91?

  • @TECfan1
    @TECfan1 5 років тому +139

    Lol Ghost doesn't care if their upside down cross logo is dumb. That's kind of the point. Tobias has described the themes of Satanism in the band as "Hollywood Satanism". It's all just spectacle and theatrical. Even satirical. There is nothing serious about Ghost except for the real-world symbolism that their songs have when read from between the lines.

    • @thomasbaron5367
      @thomasbaron5367 4 роки тому +22

      The irony is that the upside down cross isn't even Satanic
      Saint Peter was crucified upside down because he felt he was not worthy of sharing the same death as his savior Jesus

    Acceptance of inevitable death creates an inner peace that scales everything in your life, and creates stronger ties to friends family and loved ones. Too many people see death as the "enemy" or somehow think they are going to live forever, ironically creating the whole stupid "yolo" phase. I feel that death is the great reward at the end of a life lived. If your life was lived poorly the end is going to be frightning for all the questions. If you live your life to the fullest when your time comes up, you get to see what the truth of the afterlife is for yourself. You will get to know what no living being knows outside of faith, and that is a reason to live to the fullest. Ive been told that i have a very dark outlook but i beg the differ. I think a good relationship with death is very healthy. You guys are awesome by the way. Love your discussions on different songs. Loving the Ghost videos, but you're missing out by not hitting Year Zero yet. I'd argue it's the quintessential Ghost song during their "classic" line up era. Much darker sound than a lot of other songs by them.

      Dark Waters disagree, I am not a big 80s arena rock fan so that's why I prefer Opus and Infestissumam. They're a lot darker and remind me of older metal bands.
      Ghost are essentially a different band now than they were when Opus was released. That's not a bad thing, they've just changed "flavors"

    • @vigridr7614
      @vigridr7614 6 років тому +1

      I think your flavour analogy is fairly appropriate; their core and intent remains the same, but they have made a couple stylistic adjustments that in my opinion fit and follow their mythology and how it has progressed over the years.
      I personally believe that if nothing else, the new album is more consistent (in the sense that all of the songs are fairly streamlined in terms of quality) when compared to the older material where amazing songs like Elizabeth and Satan Prayer in Opus or Year Zero and Monstrance Clock in Infestissumam stand out a ton compared to other more forgettable tracks.
      I'm sure they've not abandoned the darker side to their music, they're an extremely recent band after all, I think it's reasonable for them to expand and experiment.

It's always somewhat strange to me that Christians are afraid of being exposed to other ideas, viewpoints, perspectives, art, than their own. Is your faith unshakable? If you find a viewpoint you like better, your viewpoint was unsound. I am sure it's been mentioned many times in the comments...this is a cover of a song virtually unknown outside of Sweden. Don't let anyone denounce you guys from stepping into different boundaries of music that may reflect juxtaposing ideological principles. It is (or should be) a part of the human experience to learn as much as you can from every culture and denomination out there.
    If you don't have the freedom to go and give Gorgoroth an honest listen, then i'd say those who say as such are pressing an inherently restrictive, sheltering ideology. No one said you have to agree with what is being said, but that doesn't take away the experience of the art and musicianship being showcased.
    Anywho, I just had to tell you guys I really appreciate you for being one of the most honest and open reaction channels out there and willing to step outside of your box to analyze things you dont necessarily agree with. I myself am not a christian, and will never be, but you have helped me understand that open mindedness can and does exist in that denomination.

    What i love about this song is that the "days" are actually steps in which mankind had followed to where we are and we will be. We are Babylon in a sense. False Gods, bad ideas of who Jesus was, especially when people who are gay were made that way, and Jesus loved man as they were all His fathers creations but made him sad that He had been forsaken, but He knew it was where His story would truly start. A whore was one of His closest friends so gay, disabled, sick, and forgotten were all part of who He gave love to. He even forgave Judas so thats nothing like most "religious" people. This song is truly a bettet example of our time here on Earth.

    I find, with Ghost songs, that they just stick around in my head. I can be sort of so-so on them when I first listen, but they are almost always more than they seem. I wouldn't say that I'm a big fan, but I certainly understand the draw of the band. They're very smart about the way they structure the music and the lyrics, and their overarching, theatrical element makes the whole thing an event. Whereas most death and black metal presents dark subject matter with an easy warning of being harsh and sinister, Ghost often gives it to you with a teaspoon of sugar. You're walking around, singing about the devil all day, and you're not even really aware of it.

      Go is synonymous with At The Gates' Tomas Lindberg. Not Korn. ATG's Slaughter Of The Soul is one of the most influential extreme metal records.
      Even as a 15 year old I knew it would be a classic.
      This Ghost song (Just in case it hasn't been mentioned.) is originally performed by some obscure 80s Swedish rock band.
      Kind of funny how they started out as a 80s metal nostalgia band. Now they have switched to 80s pop rock worship. I guess greed is pretty satanic..... So why not.

    • @kuneefay
      @kuneefay 6 років тому

    • @KrzysztofMularOlsen
      @KrzysztofMularOlsen 6 років тому +1

      I never indicated anything about ripping off. Fans and musicians who have toured with At The Gates have "GO" tattooed as a tribute to At The Gates. So its an At The Gates thing.
      Also, At the Gates would be a fun band to see in a video. They got all the satan and gore out of their system when they were called Grotesque. And were one of the first death metal band who dealt with more introspective topics.

    I personally really like BIBLE from Ghost. Ghost is one of my favorite bands overall actually. Now I'm not a Christian or I don't consider myself one but I did grow up going to church. I got a trophy for singlehandedly beating the biggest churches in Central Ohio at Bible Bowl...but that's just because I have an incredibly good memory, like LD good and I smoked those big teams. My Mom also played the piano in church my entire childhood. I grew disillusioned with the church as a teenager and a lot of my gripes remain the same as they did then. And this song pretty much sums them up for me....God wiped out the entire world except Noah and his family?!?! Even if they were wicked they didn't deserve that.....and even if they did WHO PRAYED FOR THEM? That too me is what this song is about. Supposedly God will be judging humanity, one by one, and according to Christianity you can be the utmost piece of dog sh!t and so long as you're a [baptized] believer who's accepted J.C. as your lord and Savior you're IN LINE JERRY LYNN or JERRY FLYNN......'s mullet from WCW NITRO circa 1999. But my question has always been but what about all those God will forsake? Who prays for them? Great song.

    I'm relatively new to your channel and I've been binging through a bunch of your videos. There's something about the way that Sori is so easily sucked into her own (a bit naive, you seem so loving and like a cool person so please dont take this as a jab) interpretation of the songs of Ghost. It most definitely isn't a prayer nor put God in any favorable light of any kind.
    The whole song is saying that even though He put mankind on Earth, He will also take mankind out on his watch. If He is supposedly a God of love, and wanting us to love one another, why did He make that call to wipe out human lives who believed differently? People die because God screwed up? The chorus asks "who will pray for Babylon" because the guy who should've been accepting, wasn't. No one is available to pray for Babylon, or someone is needed to be sought who WOULD pray for them (hint: Satan, cuz God ain't there for them), or people taking it upon themselves praying (which would be the Lavey'an Satanists) . I do see the slippery slope that people who listen to Ghost's songs and aren't able to look at their own beliefs critically can think their songs can be adapted to Christianity. Tobias, as you saw in that interview you watched, despises Christianity. If you think any Ghost song has any ounce of putting God in a positive light, uhh.... I'm concerned.

    One thing these “Christians” need to know about Ghost. Ghost is not a “Satanic” band. Their music is about the relationship between human and Satan. Even though you may not worship, like, or pay attention to Satan, there is a relationship there. I can see the confused expression on the dude’s face here kind of like, “Wait, I thought they were satanic.” He’s trying very hard to judge the group, lyrics, and whole stance. Would you judge a action, horror, or comedy movie that hard? All Ghost is, is a concept band. Nothing more than artist creating art. I would like you to have a “reaction video” which is basically a “judging video” to Deicide. Please do that. I would love to see that.

    VinandSori, love you guys. I also like Ghost. I am not sure if I was the first one to point this out to you, although the track Bible is featured on Ghost's Popestar EP it is actually not an original Ghost song, it's actually a cover song. The song Bible was originally written and performed by the band Imperiet. On all of Ghost's EP's thus far most of the tracks are compromised of cover songs. Usually odd choices of songs, but they all have some theme that loosely relate to Ghost's usual themes like a songs that vaguely touch on the topics of religion, death, or ghosts. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your reviews, perspectives, and interpretations. Keep them coming.

    Terrific reaction! I've been wondering when someone would analyze the Babylon aspect of this song! As others have mentioned, this is a cover of a song by Swedish band Imperiet (Bibel), and is pretty faithful to that version.
    The background vocals were done partly by a singer named Fia Kempe, who sings for the band "The Great Discord." Would be great to see you react to their song "Darkest Day" - many bands connected to Ghost (former members, other projects) worth checking out are Magna Carta Cartel [MCC] and the aforementioned Great Discord. This episode is a perfect example of what separates yours from all the other channels jumping on the 'heavy metal reaction' craze that's currently sweeping UA-cam these days. Together, you two do a masterful job of providing us, the largely ignorant heavy metal audience, with the accurate Biblical context on the themes the artists incorporate into their music. You not only have entertaining back-n-forth banter, you also explain to the viewer the etymology & history of the topics metal bands sometimes take from the Bible in an effort to make statements against Christianity.
    You two really know your stuff, and regardless of where you ("you", as in the viewer) fall on the faith/religion chart, your channel will remain compelling nevertheless because of the educational value you offer the audience when it comes to better interpreting & understanding holy scripture. Whether you be pious and devout; agnostic; or thoroughly atheist, I believe everyone here would be open to receiving a better education on Christianity in the process as well. More importantly, I believe everyone here in our little metal community would like to gain more knowledge and insight on the Bible itself.
    Keep up the good work!

    I just found these videos earlier today and have spent all afternoon watching. As someone raised in a Pentecostal Church in southeast Arkansas, it’s looked down on that I enjoy this type of music. Since discovering Ghost, ive been pretty conflicted about liking their music. I know that sounds really bad to non-believers, like I’m a Christian who feels like he’s not allowed to enjoy things that he likes. But until you believe in things with all your heart and all your soul, you really can’t explain a confliction like that to someone else. But watching these videos have shown me that I’m not the only one who loves God and who enjoys Ghost.
    I really appreciate these breakdowns of the interpretations. They may not all be accurate to how Ghost wanted them to be interpreted, but it does interest me a great deal. I want to believe that it’s all for show. Regardless of any of that stuff though, I think Ghost fucking rocks.
    I just don’t like feeling guilty for singing along. 😂 keep up the good work!
