Of course, in the heat of reacting to the engineering and composition, I have to say; THAT MELODY the singer is singing is so dynamic/powerful from his growl to soaring hook - immense talent!!!

@president elect George Kirby I completely understand what you mean about the lack of emotions, and when he touched on the vocalist in the video, it clarified what always stopped me from truly liking Haken. The vocalist is very tight in his range during the chorus in most of the songs I've heard from them. What I mean is typically, a chorus has a more diverse range that sort of highlights the vocals as the driving force behind that section, but for Haken it seems to be the complete opposite in the sense that the way they choose to highlight the vocals is by holding a very small range of octaves. Nothing's wrong with it and they certainly choose to write it that way, but it just doesn't do it for me.

You absolutely have to listen to the messiah complex suite from their most recent album "virus." It's split into 5 parts but is no more than 12 minutes. All kinds of meter changing and production tricks throughout the song(s)

Glad you finally got around to listening to them! Btw it's Hay-Ken (They used to have a shirt essentially saying "Sounds like Bacon")
I've said it before, I'll say it again!
For their magnum opus, please, check out "Visions" from 'Visions (Reissue 2017)'
Or for something new and very different, yet still very much Haken, check out "Messiah Complex I-V".
By the way, you'll find a lot of 'Yes' like harmonics in the vocals with huge octave range, Yes, Gentle Giant and King Crimson are massive inspirations for these guys.
A lot of people underappreciate them, and they'll often have only heard one or two of their songs, and dismiss as such.
    Keep up the good work!

I just left a comment on your Periphery video whole watching it for you to do Haken then I heard you say you had done it. Jumped here right away!
Thanks for doing this. Haken is very versatile and their catalogue is quite impressive. Their newer stuff are heavier and more complex than this but beautiful to listen to.

I am a HUGE fan of Dream Theater and they're definitely the King 👑. 30+ years, they are still here, making music for the fans even at their age, 55+ to 60s. They've proven themselves already so they no longer need to. So I appreciate them and feel grateful for what they are doing. Now they've passed down the torch and the new torchbearer of the genre is Haken. Musically, they're at the top, but as a band (crew, staff, management, team etc...), I really hope they can reach the heights of DT in terms of success and recognition.

Almost a year late on this one: I discovered this band because they were touring with Devin Townsend right before COVID lockdowns hit (caught his 2nd to last show before cancelling the tour). Had never heard of them prior to buying tickets for Devin, but gave them a listen on Spotify and thought they were alright. They played this track at that show, and the drummer really sold me on the band as a whole just from being 10 feet away on this song. They are so damn good and fill a niche that I didn't know needed filling with their style. It's a real fusion of 70s-80s prog rock and modern heavy metal, and I doubt many bands out there could really pull this off.1

Haken, what!! Immediately clicked on it. A band that shouldn't get overlooked, but they do. Cool fact: Mike Portnoy (dream Theater) wrote a series of songs about the 12 steps of healing, ETOH. Each Dream Theater album had one of these songs on it. After he left DT he went on tour with these songs called Shattered Fortress. The band he hired to play these songs live, with him on drums is, yes you guessed it, Haken. Its an absolute must to react to Haken, THE COCKROACH KING, it will melt you face.
