➡️ It's time to dive DEEP into modern progressive metal with HAKEN! "Carousel" has been requested numerous times recently and today I'm analyzing the 'Conner Green Bass Playthrough' cut, which comes from their 2020 album "Virus". A friend introduced me to this band with "The Mountain" many years ago, but I've missed out on their last 3-4 album releases since then. In this video we get GEEKY analyzing Conner's technique, two-handed tapping passages, pick-muting style, gnarly Dingwall bass tone, and his seamless switching of techniques to serve the song's needs at any given moment. I also discuss the song's VERY clever composition, modal chord choices, modulations, structure, the trippy "duple" rhythm breakdown, and much more.

Kudos to whoever picked this track, it's a jam. This channel is the best to find artists I'm not familiar with.
Haken is love. Haken is Life.
Conner Green is and has been my favourite bass player for many years now. He is top notch.
Carousel is amazing, but every other Haken song out there is a journey of it's own.
Saw Haken live this year and especially Connor was beasting it up. Really impressive playing. As you pointed out his technique is brilliant.
I was lucky enough to have a lesson with him. His finger technique was so precise. It was impressive. I asked to learn how to create bass line over chords progression and he came in with a simple jazz one. I couldn't play because I was so stressed out. He seemed so bored 😅.
Oh Conner absolutely has made usage of both fingerstyle and pick. Checking out a lot of their live videos you'll see him swap back and forth a lot. Also glad you mention the Glass Prison stuff, I'm the current owner of that Purple Zon he was using at that time. He is an absolute genuine human and it's awesome to get to talk to and learn from him!
This song is a freaking masterpiece. It's hard calling this, as Haken has a million superb tracks, but this one miiiiiight just be my favorite.
The whole song is so incredibly well crafted
I know @TheProgSchool has already made a very in-depth analysis of this track, but as a bass player myself, it's always nice to see a fellow bassist giving good insight on such a great song - and bassline!
Conner is a nice and approachable guy. I'm not sure if @KillswitchEngage42 is still his channel, but you certainly give him a heads up to show here so can give his own take on what he does in this track. Regarding his Dingwall, I recall him saying in a video from their channel that he uses both fingerstyle and picking fairly equally, and that's why their basses were interesting to him.
You add so much insight to songs like this, I always learn so much from your videos
I'm so glad! Thanks Chris 🙏🏼
Nice video. I’ve had this album on my phone but I haven’t got around to digging into it yet. Can’t wait to see your Dingwall when it comes in! Nolly’s play through of “prayer position” with his Dingwall and the DarkGlass pedal is one of my favorite bass tones.
YESSSSS!!! I don't know if I suggested or mentioned Haken to you, but you finally did some Haken!! I've been waiting for this for so long.
Nice song choice - my favourite from the album. Yeah, Vector and Virus have a very similar feel. Their latest album Fauna is very different.
Am I the first here? Great review as always. This made me want to go back and listen to them more.
Love Haken. Whether or not you do a video on this or not, you need to check out him practicing The Messiah Complex for the tour they just did, you mentioned Hybrid picking the example he shows off in the two minute clip he posted of the 10+ minute song is by fair the best Hybrid Picking section in their discography.
Oh man Mark, your smile after you mentioned Connor Dingwall I was going to say “when are you going to get one” their absolutely amazing basses! So looking forward to seeing yours!! I actually have a 99 Thumb NT5 on the way to me after selling mine 12 yrs ago and missing it every day!
Sounds like double D... Dingwall&Darkglass. When the B3k came out ten years ago, it was a game changer for many bass players (myself included)
12:04 Nolly uses this technique too, he showcases it in his video about Modern Metal Bass Tone with Scott’s Bass Lessons
I think it would be cool to see you breakdown the individual progression of a bass player. Like take a good example of the first Dream Theatre album and then compare how his playing has progressed to where he is today. Another interesting guy would be Alex Webster going from the early, sloppy Cannibal Corpse days to where he's ended up playing a much more technical style with Blotted Science. I imagine anyone with 30 years playing professionally playing might be interesting to see where they started vs where they are.
Never seen a wood body Dingwall before, that's pretty sweet .
Great video as always!
Which Dingwall did you order out of curiosity? I (and probably many others) implore you see how much you can do with its sound before you hit any preamp or overdrive, or any processing at all Lol. Less is so much more with those basses
Great to see someone react to this as a musican!❤
Nice to be able to regularly enjoy new great bass performances that I would never have found if it wasn't for this channel.
Glad you like them! Cheers, Vincent!
@@LowEndUniversity And of course it's even better with your analysis !
A Haken / Tetrafusion tour can take all of my money
This is so ammazing 🤘❤🤘Haken is my favorite one of my bands
Very cool video! Next time please do a analysis of one of your basslines with Tetrafusion PLEASE! I would love to see this!! ;)
I tried out a thumbpick for a while to seamlessly switch between pickstyle and fingers. Only problem is sometimes it'd get caught on a string and get dislodged from the thumb. Really neat tool though
Haken is siiiiick! You should do algorithmic salvation bass playthrough by the zenith passage. It's a killer track!!
Based (haha geddit, bassed) on that HUGE bottom string, I’d say he’s tuned to F# standard, or maybe even drop G.
Super excited to see the Dingwall! Which model did you get?
Yeah he's tuned to F#, but he doesn't overuse it all, he actually only uses it in a few tracks.
Please also review The Hirsch Effekt. Ilja has many playthroughs. I'd suggest Lifnej, or their last song Otus (which is like Tool-sseract)
You may want to check out a bass playthrough by David John Levy from Unprocessed. "Ocean" or "Dinner" would be some good ones
What kind of bass do you play? It looks sick!
Saw an awesome song choice
Awesome!! Connor is one of my favourite bass players of all time! Please Please check the new album! It is a masterpiece! Thanks for doing it!
Please listen to their latest album, "Fauna".
If you get a chance I think you'd really enjoy Ue from Maximum the Hormone (Hungry Pride, Bu-ikikaesu, Maximum the Hormone Part 1).
Haken is amazing!
Would love to see you react to King gizzard’s KEXP performance of Magma, Lucas has some groovy basslines on that song
I hear a little Gary Tubbs on vocals!
Haken did change their sound a bit over the last few albums where they started incorporating a lot more "djent" influences and less classic prog influences. Personally, I prefer their earlier albums, but the new stuff is still superb and among the best modern prog out there.
Check out “Aprieta” by Vincen Garcia 🙌🏽🤘🏽
I'm trying to imagine playing a bass that has non-parallel frets like this. Does it have a practical purpose or is that just to create the distinctive look?
It’s different for sure, but you’ll acclimate pretty quickly. Yeah, it’s 100% practical - the lower strings are longer, higher strings are shorter. Keeps the tension and note character very consistent on every string versus floppy B and E strings. Lots of other benefits - intonation, feel, etc!
@@LowEndUniversity Thanks for confirming my suspicions!
Last year I started playing an eight string guitar with a pretty wide fan and I was really surprised how quickly I acclimated, having played a standard guitar for decades. It actually feels really natural despite looking pretty weird at first.
Tony Franklin in Blue Murder
OOOO you're getting a dingwall???
😎
Welcome Mark…Ive had my AB1/5 since the early 2000’s …you’ll love it…I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on the even tension…the B is glorious.
Excellent video….love Haken, just saw Tesseract/Intervals and Plini …. amazing shows. Would love to have seen you back in the day…old STS was my introduction to that genre!
Cheers
Is his tuning on this F#BDADGC?
Yes, minus the C on top
@@mantwonmaleik4044 I’ve been playing six string for so long my mind automatically filled in the c on top.
He's definitely used B-C Standard tons before. A lot of Haken's songs he'll drop the B to A. One song he does half-step down. For the Virus album he changed to using F# Standard to add more low end definition, it gets a lot of usage on Invasion and different bits of the Messiah Complex. Conner tends to facilitate the common bass player though. He's charted sheet music/tab for all his albums with Haken. He says that it's not entirely necessary to play the majority of Haken's songs on 6 string and tends to chart most songs as a 5 string. He's tablature for this song is actually a 5 string tuning of BbDADG
Yeah. On this song, the E is dropped to D as well. When they played it live in 2022, it was the only time I saw the band retune during their set - both the bass and guitar apparently needed that open D.
I've seen Haken live a couple of times over the years, and I've also actually met Ross very briefly. Absolutely brilliant band, they do a really great mix of the more traditional Dream Theater type prog metal and stuff that sounds like the more modern bands. Conner Green is also one of my favourite bass players just because of the fact that he isn't an elitist when it comes to tone or technique and he'll use whatever he thinks fits the song the best.
👍👍👌
Have you checked out and reviewed omnific 2 basses and a drummer duh-jent style?

@@LowEndUniversity I figured you probably have. Thanks for the link I’ll check it out. Great channel. Love how you break things down and pull the essentials out of each band, style and techniques. Keep it up 👍
the song is amazing. I'm such a fan of Haken - they just make the coolest textures and their stuff is always beautiful. That said, I'm not a huge fan of the clanky distorted Dingwall sound - it's really overdone these days. His cleaner tones he had before with his Zon bass were always awesome.
Dude’s your doppelgänger too. Black tee, beard, hair swept back…
His beard is way more epic!
Haken.. that is all
The bass is so grimey good deep and nasty. Another great one.. thanks for the breakdown and sharing.
I always said "HAH-ken" not "HAY-ken"
The band usually clarifies their pronunciation with “Haken like Bacon”
@@JamaicanBambi Or Taken 2
Never heard of this band. They are incredible. And you can just grow Mark’s beard out a little and flip his hair over to his right side….. it’s his twin brother
Never heard of them, kinda boring to me trying to be too progressive as most of these types of bands do. The tone does remind me of Karnivool.
They are probably my favorite band but if this was the first song I heard from them I doubt I would have given them a second listen. Check out the songs Falling Back to Earth, Puzzle Box, and Crystallized for a better idea of what they're like.
