Acceleration Boost - $2000 Software That Makes Your Model 3/Y Quicker! Is it worth it?

- With $2000 and a smartphone you can order Acceleration Boost for Model Y Dual Motor. Just minutes later, after a quick restart, Tesla promises you’ll drop .5 seconds in your 0-60 time or roughly 10%. This week, we put that to the test in our Non-performance Model Y with two visits to a private stretch of road. (Starting SOC 75% for both pre and post upgrade.) The question is, is there a noticeable difference you can feel?
Will you be adding the Acceleration Boost for your Model 3 or Model Y?

I got the performance boost, and it brought a bigger smile to my face, and I have spent $2000 on dumber things before in my younger days. The only thing is I elect not to indulge that info to my wife. 😂
Congratulations, now she knows 😂.
Hahahaha :D Good one, thinking the same :D
You are a smart man. What happens in acc.boost stays in acc.boost.
Bwhahaha! I am close to doing it right now as well and definitely on the d-low.
Wise man
I did get it for my Long Range Model Y. It's a noticeable difference in the feel of the car. My reaction to the original full acceleration was "That's quite crisp and impressive." My reaction to the boosted version is more like "I need to look over my shoulder to make sure my testicles are not in back seat."
haha!
lol 😂
😂😂😂😂
😆😅🤣😂
Ok, you've convinced me to open a channel so i can get referrals, otherwise my wife will be like, " What did you spend $2,000 on??!"
Definitely worth it! I added the acceleration boost yesterday and could immediately tell the difference. it’s a great compromise for not paying 10K more for the Performance Model. Thanks Tesla!
Yup, we didn't care about the higher top end speed nor the bigger, noisier tires. We also live in snow country so we didn't want the car to be any lower to the ground either. The Boost was a good compromise. We will go for the tri-motor CT though.
You can order a performance tesla for +4-5k with just the acceleration boost and exclude the entire performance package (wheels, suspension, etc.)
@Alex Jerome I had to ask the car salesman at the Tesla dealership before purchasing my car. He had some special ordering options on his laptop that you can’t see on the website. If you already own a Tesla it may not be worth it though.
Does the milage go down from long range to no so long range?
Video we all needed - comparing before and after. Would also be good to see two Model Y's at the same time race, one pre boost/one post boost to visualize the gap.
great idea... a comparison I have been looking for. Also one with both PPF with glossy vs matte in white with 20's like this...
Also bought it for my Model Y Long Range and it's noticeable very happy with the upgrade.
Thanks for this video and major thanks for your reaction to the performance boost because I'm only a week into my MY and thanks to you I decided to pull the trigger on acceleration boost the next day. And as reported here the difference is remarkable and worth it.
Your response is the reason we make videos
The fun factor of the MY is half the pleasure of owning one, so I will definitely be picking this upgrade up in the future. Just glad it seems to be permanently available and not limited like the EAP...
I’ve upgraded on the second day it came out and returned it the same day (yes, you can return within 48hrs) since I didn’t see a change worth $2178 (with WA tax). Update was over the air since I was dining at the restaurant when I placed an order and when came out it was already uploaded.
Great video - thanks for posting. Kind of a Chris Pine vibe, which is cool & matter-of-fact. Acceleration Boost might just be the compromise between getting the Y Dual Motor with 19" wheels & 45 aspect ratio tires (for our crappy roads around OR) to avoid splintering the unbelievably heavy Uberturbines with 35 series rubber, instead of getting a MYP and having to sell off the Uberturbines/$400 TPMS kludge/35series Pirellis and replace the setup with decent sidewall and lighter weight wheels.
Thank you very much for sharing! Very objective review based on numbers.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
I bought mine back for my model 3, lots of fun! it does wear out your tires quicker lol, at 43k miles and i'm on my third michelin pair of tires. brace yourself.
I Purchased it and I am very happy with the results!
I somewhat wanted the Performance, but I didn't want the lower ground clearance or the larger wheels, and it wasn't eligible for the tax credit. I am really looking forward to adding acceleration boost after I take delivery.
2020 Model 3 LR DM here and I got boosted last week and car is definitely quicker and pulls harder. Zero regrets.
Very Nice! Congrats!
Got the boost. Worth it!
For the people thinking that it’s not worth it. Let’s see how much it cost for you to make your gasoline vehicle 0.5 seconds faster. Yes the mileage goes down or range just like a regular vehicle. I spent over 2000 $ to make my Benz 0.5 seconds faster still got my ass handed to me by my wife in her model 3 with boost.
Trading in Benz next week.... sorry Mercedes
Bingo!
Typically under 400USD for chiptunning that adds 10-30% of power. And this IS nothing more than chiptunning. For more expensive cars like Mercedes E AMG it can get expensive - thats 1200USD here. So 2000 is very very expensive proposition.
But most will argue that those 0.5 s are not worth it. Not that 2000 is too much.
Thank you for making this video.
My pleasure!
I purchased it for mine . Definitely worth it .
I did it and love it. 2K is nothing to gain half a second not to mention it as done in 20 min. No parts labor etc.
Congratulations! Glad to hear you are enjoying it!
I did not see/hear the time for the 2nd run after the upgrade? I'm getting the LR with 19" wheels. 3 reasons for not getting the Performance. Harsher ride, Easier to damage wheels and tires. I live near mountains and get snow in the winter so I want the ground clearance. I may get the boost however. I've heard they give 3 days to try it with option to return the upgrade for refund. Is that correct?
Of course you don't NEED the boost but seriously folks, if you're driving a Tesla you will WANT the boost. We bought it for our dual motor Model 3 and we stomp it at every opportunity. Those Challengers and Porsches avoid the pole position next to me on purpose. They obviously have been spanked before.
Buddy love the video how about some quartermile times?
the 2022 model Y performance comes with michelin PS all season 4s now. so it's more comfortable, and has M+S rating. so it's ok to get the 21s now. plus you get brembo brakes in the MYP
The calipers on the Y LR are also Brembo
Great video! Please do some racing vids with the model y 👍✅💯
Coming next week!
great video thanks
Race with model y performance. & now with the long range performance boost model y ✅💯👍 please
Performance a full 1 second quicker, 3.4-3.5
@@foam27 not quite, because Tesla likes advertising the performance time with roll out of 3.5, but they measure long range as 4.8 but without rollout, with rollout it is 4.6, without boost. With boost I’ve seen times as high as 3.9 if you are fair and include rollout. If you watch some races between the two you’ll see the difference isn’t gigantic at all lol
@@Mrfix-iz4di great mention of this and is VITAL for those on the fence when trying to decide on which to buy...OR for those of us with MYLR with 20's who'd like to have a bit more boost for extra oomph in an already quick car plus not have to deal with a bit more jarring of a ride and tire differences when ya have to buy new ones.. We could always lower our cars and paint the calipers, right?
I buy e-v-e-r-y upgrade. ALL have been worth it.
2 grand for 1/2 a second ? Hell yes it's worth it . A gas engine car that's already fast would require twice that for 1/2 a second .
This is what people don’t realize
What's the 1/4 mile time? I saw online 12.4 for the non performance and 11.8 for the performance.. No way the boost bring it to 11.9?
Just did the 48 hour trial and returned. It is awesome but in day to day driving does anyone find it useful or is it purely for bragging rights and winning drags? My MYLR has so much power already that I rarely use in daily driving I feel like I would be paying for even more power that I'm even less likely to use. Curious to hear thoughts.
Increased regen
I haven’t even tried the acceleration boost but I don’t really feel the need to either. My long range is already pretty fast and I could never see myself paying $2000 to increase my 0 to 60 by a half a second. If they cut the price in half to $1000, I would consider doing it. $2000 is out of the question though.
please race a performance model y to 1/4 mile. ty for the vids!
Performance would win.
Wait when you buy the performance boost, that's permanent in the software of the car forever? Or is it an option you need to click every single time in the car's menu or your tesla app for it to be functional? I'm pretty sure i'm getting a tesla dual motor (don't know if i'm getting a 3 or Y yet) after my current lease is over so i'm definitely thinking about getting the acceleration boost with it, instread of spending 10k more for the performance.
Great question, it is a one time upgrade taking your standard acceleration up to sport but it can still be slowed by switching to chill. You cannot get standard acceleration any more though
Totally worth it!!
Did you do it?
@@KLWTTS Yes. Few days after I purchased it.
I love it. You could notice the difference
@@danielcondins5812 Great! Does it feel any quicker off the line?
I wonder if musk will discount this upgrade in the near future 🧐 Seems to be a trendy move for him. 😎
3 years later and not yet... but I am getting the feeling that he may. Even a "limited time offer" for it for $1000 would see it fly off the shelves... could make up some differences in poorer sales for MYP's...
If you gave the non performance model Y and you add 2K for rims and 2K for power boost. Basically for another 1k you can get the performance model
I remember back in the day you could spend two grand to make your hot rod a half second faster but you would've spent the entire weekend wrenching on it (cam, headers, new carb, etc...), have multiple cuts on your hands, grease under your fingernails, ... and you just might scatter the engine anyway.
Lol
This really is a no brainer if a little speed boost is what's desired.
If I decide to do the upgrade but for whatever reason I’m not happy with the boost overall performance, am I able to get back the money and not keep the boost, it’s that an option upon purchasing the upgrade where you Can sorta try it out for a day or two?
you have 48 hours to return it
Curious how much more power car has (kw, nm)
I think for 2k Tesla should add birds eye view to stop and really aid many Tesla owners from curbing their pricey oversize tires and expensive rims
Or learn to use the mirrors?
@@ItsBinhRepaired Its not a replacement for mirrors, its just easier and cool feature
@@teico6875 I use the side repeater cameras and haven't had any issues with curbs.
@@ItsBinhRepaired as i said its not as issue to only have mirrors, its normal. The cameras are a cool feature and the birds eye view is definetly possible with teslas technology. Its just a extra thing that is helpful
@@teico6875 they technically have it, it just doesn't show up as satellite view. It shows up as what the ai sees
What app on your phone do you use??
does adding acceleration boost lower range
I have it on my Model 3 and enjoy the extra power. FYI though, most "pre owned" Tesla's on the official Tesla site now include the acceleration boost on purchase, since it's an easy profit maker like FSD.
Good point! Thanks for sharing!
cool info! thanks, then I can pick Long range and have more kilometers + with with package a bit faster car. cool! Tesla FTW!
Is this where mythbusters used to shoot? Beautiful location!
It is!
You're essentially paying $2k for an additional 50 horsepower, with just a click of a few buttons on your phone. So yes, it's totally worth it.
More like 100hp, dynos around showing 100whp more 360whp vs 460whp on model y dual motor.
are the 20" induction wheels all season or only summer
All seasons
How much faster would those times have been without the roof rack?
None. Those impact efficiency. Impact on 0-60 would be nominal.
will the model Y get the new batteries that Tesla launched on battery Day event ???
probably not within the next year
I would think I would want it, but only if buying, not leasing!!
Could program modofication turn the LR into a performance model?
The performance model is a trim that has some physical differences with what it comes with, such as the tires and breaks.
@@timothystinson8900 I think the rear motor also is different.
How does it affect your mileage from the charge? That'd be a good thing to let us know after driving it for a while.
It shouldn't have a significant impact unless I adjust my driving style.
Do they have a software boost for the Model Y performance model? As-well?
No
No, you really don’t need it’s fast as is.
@@YU33i nope still too slow. I’ve had 3 performance Tesla and 3 seconds is minimum lol. Besides if battery at 80% it’s more like 3.8 seconds
does the standard range have this option as well?
No. just the Long Range Dual Motor 3/Y
What was the state of charge for each run, before and after the update?
75%
The Kilowatts would definitely recommend including that info in any EV speed test video. Maybe add it to the notes or annotations on this one?
Raphy Martinez added! Thank you
Thanks for no-frills video. Good stuff
I don't need it, I WANT IT!!!!
I bought the boost for my Y. I noticed though at 100% charge I'm now only getting around 295 miles.
You can change the acceleration settings to gentler acceleration. That would restore your range.
@@animeshdas9842 Yeah I know it's called chill mode. I'm still not getting over 300 miles at full charge. Anyway I ended up selling the Y and bought the Rav4 Prime. The Rav4 build quality, ride quality and 600 miles combined range just blow the Y away.
Did you order the Prime sight unseen? Can’t find one around here.
@@eldonw3459 I live in California so the dealers there get more of the Prime than other states. I payed dealer mark up ended up paying 60k for the prime. But I also get $7,500 tax credit. Loving my Prime the ride is quiet and so smooth.
@@badimpulses17 $60k for a Toyota?
Dammit. I’ve gotta buy it for my LR model Y.
Enjoy!
How long does the software upgrade take when purchasing acceleration boost?
30 seconds to 12 hours. Mostly its about your Wifi/Data connection
Mine started updating within 10 seconds. You need to be on wifi, though.
If the boost decreased the 0-60 time closer to or below 4 seconds, then I would surely get it. But reducing the time only by a half of second, it's hard to justify the $2000 price tag.
I went from 12.40s to 11.80s at the drag strip
It's a little better now, 0.6 seconds faster.
@@curtspray Is that a Model Y or Model 3?
@@fr3238 3 dual motor. sorry i didnt get back sooner
@@curtspray Thanks for the reply. That's what I thought, my Model Y LR with boost is about as fast as a stock 3 LR.
Does it impact range at all?
Not unless you're constantly flooring it at every red light
Does the mileage go down to Not So Long Range? Is 0.5s small change in acceleration a good sacrifice for a Not So Long Range Anymore Tesla? It's a decision and sacrifices to make for $2000. There's a reason why we chose long distance over performance in the first place when we bought the Long Range Model. Do you want to give that up? Anyway, you still won't have the performance shorter braking distance stopping and the formula car feel corner hugging of a performance suspension that you get when you first buy the Performance Model.
Do you think it would affect the range in anyway? Obviously your foot is the biggest factor...
It shouldn’t impact range at all except for how aggressively you accelerate
i HAVE NOT SEEN QUARTER MILE TIME YET.. ANY IDEA?
I ran a 12.26 @ 113mph (0-60 3.90 with the 1ft rollout, 4.13 without)
@Ayush Malpeddi those numbers are outliers. If you look at dragtimes.com or use the Dragy app and review the leaderboard, the stock LR isn't running that fast. Every LR with the boost is running 3.9-4.1 (1 ft rollout)
What about Consumption?
All this talk about speed and acceleration on public roads. You should get it though because the authorities will love you, especially if it means you exceed the speed limit. They will be able to issue you a much larger infringement notice.
can we do this boost for performance?
Unfortunately no
what app did you use for 0-60
We used a V-box sport :)
So it's like buying an iphone and u need to pay for it to update?
I wish this wont be in the future
nope... the car does normal updates (new games, apps, and features like boom box, etc) for free. the only things that cost money are the FSD and the boost.
It’s Worth it
Thats for you to decide!
Are those 0-60 times with or without the 1ft rollout?
Without
Didn't know you were from Alameda. I recognize the old Base. Been there many times. We have a MYP. We should meet up.
1000 and i will buy it :-)
Why don't they just include this with the caf??
Cuz they can get an extra $2k out of owners for it.
I have race mode in my gas car. I slam it in to r and I didn't need $2000 for that mode
Great!
Maybe better to chose the Performance Model if remaining difference will be 5000 bucks.
Agreed.
I thought about this as well. Assume you are counting the 20” wheels at $2K plus the $2K boost. That still leaves a $6K premium for the Performance. Biggest problem with the Performance for people living in cold weather climates is the “21 wheels and sport tires. Worthless At least 4 months out of the year and a major pothole risk. Should be an option to get the Performance with 20s.
@@eldonw3459 agree. I’m really want the performance package but I don’t want the 21 inch wheels. I love in Kansas City, snow and potholes like you said... about ready to buy a model y but undecided, 21 wheels are a slight negative not a positive.
@@StevenFalkner Yeah, I’m leaning Long Range with the 20” wheels. 19s would be the smarter choice but like the look of the 20s. Checked out Facebook to gauge the market for selling the 21s and it’s not good. Quite a few on there and have been posted a long time with multiple price drops. I’m not interested in spending $10K more on the performance and then having to spend $3K more for wheels that are actually appropriate for my climate.
@@eldonw3459 think I agree now! Going to go with long range. And will buy the $2k software performance upgrade to get another 0.5 sec reduction in 0-60. A car is also about handling which I want. Btw, the 19’s look nice too if you remove the hub caps. I went into a Tesla “dealership” to take a look. They’re nice without the hubs . Though 20” looks a little better. The tires for 21 would have to be replaced more often plus they are $350 per tire. Thanks for talking about resale value. Yup going with long range + software upgrade. And that will save money to buy FSD.
This video film in alameda base
A so expensive camera inside and... it's always out of focus bro!
am I seeing correct is that a red komodo ??? lol 😂
Correct!
Does this update decrease range?
It only impacts range if you’re constantly accelerating hard
Does anyone know if these partial upgrades expire? I had a $4k upgrade available last week that I really wanted and it’s no longer available. I want the FSD option but as everyone else knows and agrees it’s not worth it yet but I really wanted the self parking and summon feature and now that partial upgrade is gone 😩 is there a way to recover it or ask for it?
Unfortunately that was temporary, to boost profit at the end of Q3. It may return in the future but at the moment there’s no way to get it.
App name
?
It's Tesla's app
Have more fun with your favorite car by upgrading your accessories.
Why isn't this stock?
Because they can honestly 🙃
You want more, you pay more. Isn't that how it works in a capitalist society ?
How many times must you mention you have a "non-performance" Model Y. We all know the MYP does not have the AB as option. C'mon, man!
Must resist 😬.....
I first thought this performance boost is staire on capitalism, but it's real lmao.
I just got a Model 3LR, and I noticed this option, and frankly I was shocked. I understand making the self-driving functionality an additional option because it requires taking on certain risks, but selling you a car with the acceleration intentionally nerfed, and making you pay more to unlock it is ridiculous.
2k for a .5 second improvement.... I don't think thats worth it.
No its not worth it, but I will get it!
2K for half-second in acceleration? Wtf?
How much would that cost on a gas car?
Maybe more, but you need to do some physical improvement and the price is justified because of that. Here you need to download something and that's it.
Joaquin Berlo Chip tuning costs just as much in some gas vehicles, and that’s a software upgrade.
This made me realize I can sell anything at any price and someone is out there willing to pay for it
True
Damn click bait thumbnail no side by side comparison stats
Why are they making you pay for this?
Honestly I think it's just so they can test the consumer's willingness to make software upgrades a part of the ownership experience. If Tesla can make one car that can be sold at different trim levels limited by software, they maximize profit and minimize costs.
@@KLWTTS Another thing to consider is that the warranty is still intact, but now must include the additional wear and tear. So that could be a consideration as well.
Porsche owner "Hey Pete, do I ever turn up zee boost? (Porsche 911) Ja Bri, I turn it up as far as it goes." Only on Turbo models 120k or more.
Tesla owner "Pay 2k and get an upgrade." Any idiot can do that, but sacrifice 10% range. ... Nah, not for me.
No range loss from this upgrade unless you have a lead foot.
It’s refundable! So get it and if you aren’t impressed, request a refund.
No brainier !
Objectively, how can you even say it’s worth it? In what driving conditions are you actually utilizing this in which the driving prior to the boost was not great enough? How often per week are you actually even flooring it? Do you floor it on the way to buy groceries? Please explain.
Ridiculous waste of money.
People have been spending a lot more money on ICE cars for many decades to get a 10% reduction in acceleration times. It's a waste of money, sure, but it's a good value if you're going to waste money.
@@EUC-lid You spend $2000 so you can take off a few seconds faster at the lights only to go the same speed limit as everybody else. As I said, ridiculous waste of money but then Musk fanboys love to throw their money at their tech lord don't they.
@Ayush Malpeddi I commented on the video because I knew it would trigger Elon Musk fanboys like you when I addressed the stupidity of paying $2000 to take off a few seconds faster at the lights than somebody else.
