Tesla Model 3 & Model Y - Is Acceleration Boost Worth It?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 лип 2023
- Tesla has offered an acceleration boost for both he Tesla Model 3 and Model Y for quite some time now. The Acceleration boost is limited to the Long Range version of the Model Y and Model 3.
This acceleration boost is meant to improve your 0-60 time by 0.5 seconds, and when you consider the base horse power of the Model Y and Model 3, this is a significant improvement. This power increase comes in at $2,000 and only requires that you select the upgrade on the Tesla App and submit the order. Once done, Tesla will automatically push a software update to your car.
2 years ago I purchased the acceleration boost for our original Tesla Model Y. This time, I am putting the Tesla Model 3 to the test. The Model 3 comes with a base 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds, which is significant acceleration to start with. The acceleration boost is promised to improve this time to 3.7 seconds. The real question is, how much does it improve in real life and is it worth it?
In my testing, I charged the Model 3 to 100% charge and completed testing both with and without the acceleration boost between 90-100% charge. In addition, testing was completed on both within 1 hour total time, with the same conditions.
Interestingly in my baseline testing of the LR Model 3, I ended up getting an average 0-60 time of 4.095 seconds, which is a whole 0.105 seconds faster than stated. So the start point is already faster than advertised, which now means this is a test of how much faster than stock and is it faster than 3.7 sec.
After the boost was installed, my average 0-60 time ended up being 3.68, or just under the stated 3.7 seconds. This was a great improvement and delivers on the promised 3.7 seconds, but it is also nearly 0.1 sec less improvement than anticipated. Because the Model 3 LR comes slightly faster than advertised, the baseline is better than what the software states. This means if the acceleration boost was indeed targeted to achieve 3.7 sec, then the target is time, not reduction in time.
At the end of the day, the last question is, is it worth it? After completing this testing, I think that you get a lot of value for $2k. To improve 0-60 by 0.4 sec at this baseline can be quite expensive. So the cost for the performance is reasonable. The feeling in the car is also as you would expect and delivers more G's on takeoff. If you are one who prefers to accelerate as fast as you can from time to time, this upgrade may be for you. If you dont much use the acceleration the Model 3 already comes with, then this wouldn't be for you.

Tell your wife those dining room chairs are not going to make money from UA-cam views 😂
Lol
😂😂
Was thinking along the same lines. Hope you make $4000 from this video so you can pay for chairs + A.B. or Tesla gives you boost for free since you’re a promoter Or you can remove the seats from the M3 and use those for dining room chairs..
In the next video review. Here is a nice new set of dining room chairs!
@@jeffandich3894great points. Tesla should give Justin the Boost for free. 😊
JUST the video I was looking for; thanks BTG!
Bought a used 21 model y few weeks ago and it came with the acceleration boost, just beautiful 😍
Very nice!
Same thing happened to me! Lol
I think all used Tesla's get the acceleration boost.
Been looking into used Teslas (From Tesla) more and more. Particularly intriguing: There are a couple of Model X Long Range Plus out there with 371 miles published range. And most of them seem to come with Full Self Driving for not much extra money because Tesla didn't give the owners anything for it on trade in.
@@seanplace8192 no not all, I was on Tesla’s website day and night up until I bought this one and saw plenty without
That was not just informative but fun to watch as well, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
If you can, wait until you refer someone. The Acceleration Boost is 9500 points and you get 10000 points for referring someone.
Indeed
This may be my favorite video of yours!!! Makes me wanna pull the trigger on my 2023 MYLR. Congrats!!! 3.60 seconds!
appreciate it. it was fun putting together and in hind sight fun at home too
Nice upgrade! Love that boost upgrade! Took mine to the track and ran a 11.8 1/4 mile run
Hell yes!
Great video and channel. Congrats on the Acceleration Boost! How much battery percentage did you use doing these tests?
a little under 10%
This is probably the best video about AB, I can't believe you spent so much time creating this video; however, I do believe you enjoyed it : )
It was a blast!
Definitely getting a Long Range instead of the Performance after this video, Thanks for the info!
Loved the video, thank you for that. I am wondering if there is any impact on range and watt hrs per mile in normal driving, after the boost is installed?
I dont know what, if any, impact to normal day to day driving would be.
Awesome video! I’ve wanted to get this for my MYLR, but wish they’d add “Sport” as a third option and not replace “Standard.” No biggie.
Kind of feel the same but this forces you to use it I guess
How does the standard compare to the sport, mileage wise? Did it decrease it or just the same?
Awesome video. Thank you!
Welcome!
Thank you for doing this! I was genuinely curious about the feel, along with the numbers. And if it gets enough views, this video can pay for itself, right? 😄
perhaps it can! Just need enough views and it's paid for.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy1/4 mile speed?
Love this video. I’m in several FB groups and I’ve asked the same question as you. This is super helpful information. I’d love to meet you at the Tesla Takeover as well. 🙌🏻
Hope to see you there!!
I have a 2021 Long Range Model 3 with Accel Boost. Difference between Performance and Long Range + AB is about .20 in 0-60mph and quarter mile. The 3.1* sec Performance is rated as 1' roll out. If you look at your draggy for your faster times you were hitting 3.3 sec with accel boost as your 1' rollout. The Performance models are sold with 1' roll outs compared to standard and long range models. The Performance quarter mile hits around 11.55 on average and LR + AB is around 11.75. The Performance sees that .20 faster time from 0-30 mph, but from 30+ mph they are neck and neck, in fact most times the LR with Accel Boost will finish the quarter mile at faster speeds in many cases.
Interesting data points. Thanks for sharing
Dining room chairs! LOL Busted! Great video Beards!
Glad you enjoyed
Great video man!
Glad you liked it!
Great video 🎉
Love that you can see your kiddo's car seat behind you in the video!
Im just a normal dude with a family, just like many of you.
Great video, thanks!... I am interested in getting it, but not so much for the acceleration from a stop, but the acceleration at higher speeds, like when joining a highway or passing a car from like 60 mph. The standard acceleration in the M3LR is quite good, but I find it does fade away a bit at those speeds, which to an extent is inevitable, but I wish the acceleration boost would improve that? Is that what you are getting?
Nope, you would not be getting any additional power pass 60mph.
Mr Beard, Thank you for driving all the way to Mexico just to demonstrate the 0-60 pulls 😅. I feel that’s the way to go.. a long range with boost! Can’t wait to see the next generation model 3 with this upgrade.
Haha indeed!
I think his name is now officially Mr. Beard.
Why wouldn't you spend $1,800 more for an actual performance and all of its upgrades?
@@shilvock22 In short, ride quality
@@shilvock22yea don't see the value at all in a performance
Great video. Just an observation, you did the test on acceleration boost upgrade right after the first few test on normal. Not sure if you charge while you where back at home. If SOC is the same as the first runs, you might get closer to .50 second.
It was very close and I was only idle for a few minutes.
Awesome video 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Awesome video! Does the upgrade effect your range though?
no idea
Does this impact range in any measurable way? Does Tesla state that the published EPA range changes? Really great video sir!
Don’t think so
Interesting video! I wonder if you ran better tires if you would gain better acceleration. Know someone with the M3P that you can borrow their wheels & tires for a video test? Maybe it is time for new tires?
Yea I would for sure. Traction could have been better.
Best acceleration boost demo video on UA-cam, judging by your initial reaction, it would be heartbreaking returning it... better work extra hard for those dining room chairs 🤣
It's a lot of fun! Seeing 11.99 1/4 mile was too perfect as icing on the cake!
@@BeardedTeslaGuyThis demo makes me want to get it! And how cool is it that you found that perfect new unopened road that mimics a track to test it on, thanks for posting!
Does acceleration boost stay with vehicle when you sell/trade it in? Is there any added value when selling?
The beauty about Teslas vs other EVs. The batteries are just so good. Launch after launch after launch 🚀 without depleting the battery. Take that Mach-E!
Yea it’s amazingly consistent
I'm considering it on my 22 M3LR. I don't care about 0-60 so much, so how does the boost feel at 40-50mph city speeds as well as highway speeds? Is the boost still very noticeable and punchy and worth the 2k if "at speed" is all I care about?
It made me smile every time in my MYP 2022. That hurts...
Lol
Bought it when my car was 3 days old. Absolutely worth every penny.
It’s significant improvement
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I just watched another UA-camr dyno his Model Y LR before and after acceleration boost. Gained 100 HP! I would expect same for Model 3.
Nice tht the upgrade comes right away. Unlike FSD. Pretty cool got ur own test track too 🤣 seeing the joy in in ur face definitely seems worth it. Don’t see them ever dropping the price of this. RIP to your tires now
yea, be prepared for more tires because its too much fun not to launch it.
when you sell or trade in the car. does the speed boost give you ability to ask 1k more or so?
Cool… I did this for my girlfriends model three last week and she loves it! I already have a model Y performance so she can barely not beat me but… Hey so happy to see you’re going to be at the Tesla takeover next weekend looking forward to seeing you again we met at lunch last year
So excited!!!
Excellent video I wanted to buy the accelerated boost but tesla dont offer it in Puerto Rico. 🙃
bummer
😳 the cop watching you go in circles for 20 min.
What app did you use? I can’t find an accurate one!
I have had the acceleration boost on my model Y LR. I can definitely tell the difference, and a surprising thing is my wpm figure has dropped as well despite me flooring at every opportunity - don’t know how that can be so? My wife is also unaware. She always drives the car in chill mode, so won’t feel the difference 😊
Nice
I’ve driven a loaner model 3 LR with AB. Feels very similar to my model y performance
yea, its really great
Did this with the mYLR, just didn't want the range hit of the performance version, or ride quality loss... win win for me. You lose a small bit from 0-30 due to the lesser tires compared to the performance version, but that's about it...
agreed, its a good middle option.
What about range would you lose range or would it stay the same?
I bought the 2022 model 3 performance. I just put on Martian 18" wheels and it is wonderful. Also, if you get the S3XY buttons then you can have one of them switch sport mode and stick it on the back of the steering wheel so it is right at your finger tip. You can also set it so that if you floor that accelerator pedal it will automatically turn on sport mode.
Interesting way to add a short cut, like it!
Nice
"You can also set it so that if you floor that accelerator pedal it will automatically turn on sport mode."
That is an amazing feature. One thing I never liked about the permanent chill mode is that it would never switch automatically when I needed the sport mode to escape a dangerous situation. How does one set this up?
Nice to see you making lemonade, I mean, videos with your new toy. Have fun. Perhaps once you get enough views, the wife will be less annoyed with the purchase. For myself, while it is a lot of fun, there are too many higher priority things to spend $2k on right now since I'm in the middle of building a new house in Colorado.
Yea if I can show her it paid for itself then it would be perfect I think
I’m thinking about using my referral credit. Do you think it’s worth it?
I’m happy enough with my standard acceleration on my LR 7 seater. It’s still so fast even with all the seats filled and the hills are nothing.
Agreed
Wondering if better tires would make a difference, assuming you were using stock ones? What size rim/tire combo were used in this test?
Factory wheels and tires
Are you testing an LR or Performance model?
Been wanting to do this for 2 years with my Model3 LR but hoping they reduce they price a bit. Hope you like the Florida heat! I’m in the Orlando area also and not liking the summers anymore! Keep up the good work!
Price has been 2k forever. I don’t think it’ll change. But I agree the heat can be a drag sometimes
@@BeardedTeslaGuy True. Always hopeful but may take the plunge soon.
I tried it for 48 hours on my 2022 Model 3 LR and I didn't think it was worth it. I may be willing to pay like $800, but for $2,000, no way for me.
With the new Tesla referral program the software upgrade costs 9,500 credits. One referral of a model 3 or Y is 10,000 credits. That’s how I got mine.
I'd wager that it would only go up from $2k. Nothing seems to go down these days haha
I bought my MYLR used recently with acceleration boost and for the first month had it in chill mode the whole time. I was running late for a golf round and figured “why not some extra power?”
I switched it into sport acceleration and sport suspension and BAM!
I was legit gitty like “What do I have HERE???!!”
My head was hitting my headrest a bunch until I got used to it. Got to my round on time, albeit with a little motion sickness 😂
these cars are so much fun
This was amazing. Thanks as I was considering acceleration boost. I’ll be having that conversation with my wife at some point 😂
Haha nice
Just buy it and hope she doesn’t notice lol jp. Talk to your wife
@@davidbaker9943 lol

Always more!
Bro I hope you have one of those nice memory foam mattress for the back of your Y. U are gonna need it!
lol😫
Actually i think he created one and sells it. Lol X 2
Haha
Great video as always! My suggestion would be to buy the performance and skip the AB. Buy some 18" wheels and be happy with even a little more speed. The ride is solid on the performance model. That said out of the box like you said its a solid upgrade to get more HP & acceleration instantly without bolting on, wrenching, or time. Instant gratification = love it!
In all honesty, you can't go wrong either way. Both are fast, both are awesome, and both far exceed the ICE experience!
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Could not agree more. ;)
In canada we get $12k incentives on the LR ans 0$ on the performance, and that makes the performance 25k more. So for me LR with AB was the right decision. Depends on the market I guess
@@louisolivierfortin Didnt know that, different markets and even states in the US have different incentives. Good to know though. Thx
Strong disagree. Buy LR and you get a smoother ride, a higher ride height, 4 matching tires that can be rotated, less expensive tires, less expensive brakes, and a longer battery range (which absolutely matters). All of those things are perks over the Performance. The Performance is fun but you aren't flooring it all the time. The acceleration is great but after the fun wears off some, you just want that added range.
I bought it a few days ago. It just completes the car.
It’s nice
Nice! Even stock LRAwd makes me light headed.
yea, its fast out of the package
I sweat everytime and hang on for dear life when passing peeps.
🤣🤣🤣 awesome video!!
Those Dining Room Chair wouldn’t make you smile 😂
right?!?!
M3 with the boost runs the exact same times as my MYP for the 1/4 and 0-60 :)
Yea that’s crazy awesome!
Thanks for the video, I just got some Tesla loot points to spend, debating whether to get the acceleration boost.
No problem 👍
I just bought a Model Y LR, used my own referral code so I got 10,000 points for the shop. Was browsing it and found the $2,000 acceleration boost was available for 9,500 points! Which is crazy because for 9,000 points you would get a wall connector that is only $475. I understand the AB is basically free to Tesla to add to the car, but with referral points it’s basically free to me too. Debated it for about 2 seconds and got it!
nice!
What Speed Test App are you using on your phone for calibrating the 0-60 and quarter mile speed?
Dragy, which includes and actual device I pace on the car to accurately read times
When I first got my 3, I purchased the boost. Then a few days later I got a refund for it, which they allow just one time. Maybe a month later I was really missing it and got it back, and haven't looked back.
Nice
Love it
Me too
Wheel size?
After purchasing this package. Can you change it back to chill mode and sport mode at any time?😊
yep
i was expecting the aftermath of purchasing the booost as a blooper at the end!
lol I did make a short. She was pissed. When she texted me, she said she was on her way home so I started recording and she pulled up a few minutes later.
Just got a long range Y.
I contemplated getting it but it’s not too often I just floor it from a stand still.
I would be more interested in 30-60 or 60-80 time.
If it made a difference on passing speeds, that would be great.
it does, it adds general power access throughout the band.
Now try the Performance model with 18” wheels. Mine is doing 3.00 seconds 0-60 mph with weight reductions.
hell yea! Ultimate sleeper!
I’ve wanted to buy this acceleration boost for a while now but couldn’t justify the $2000 cost. Well with the new Tesla referral program the 10,000 credits I got was enough for the software upgrade
Yea it’s a great deal for referral credits
I added the speed boost for my MYLR and you can definitely feel it. Worth the $2k if you can afford it.
if you are into that sort of thing its a great value.
After a year with my Tesla Y Long Range, I was accustomed to the acceleration and felt it had more in it. I purchased acceleration boost and it really makes a difference. I haven’t made any measurements though. Is it “worth” $2k? The car was around $60k after taxes and delivery, so yeah, $2k is worth it in the same way $2k is worth blue paint and white seats.
Good way of looking at it
Still havent stepped all the way down in my LR, its just to damn fast as it is, i couldnt imagine dropping the hammer after the boost.
Another way to look at it too is if you want to make any gas car faster, it will cost more than $2k unless you want to just completely void the warranty. So the fact that it's backed by Tesla as well makes it worth it.
Did the performance boost cause any loss of battery performance or usage performance decrease. Usually there is something to be taken away when such an increase in power is installed.
Only when you floor it 😎
WOW, the Model 3 Longrange is a lot faster than the model Y Longrange. The Y is only rated at 4.8 seconds 0-60 and the Performance Boost will get you to 4.2 seconds 0-60 which is the normal the Model 3 has from the Factory. I am thinking I might as well get a Model Y Performance just to keep up with the Model 3 Longrange. Nice review as always!
hahahaha love it! Any justification to spend money I am ALL FOR!!
Appears my Tesla 2018 doesn't offer this upgrade.....too bad
What does the Performance Model do vs LR with Upgrade?
Performance is 3.1 sec and I bested at 3.6
do you have to change it to sport mode eeverytime you get into the car? or does it just stay?
Set it and forget it
Apologies in advance…..
You must get questions ALL the time….
But can you answer me this please:
I’m hoping to get my Model Y soon, and whilst I have Sleep Apnoea I have to use a CPAP mask to help me sleep.
If I plugged my mask via the 12v outlet for power (thinking of an Ecoflow purely for this also), could the 12v power the CPAP for 7-9 hours a night and be ‘recharged’ when I go driving again??
My electrical knowledge is poor and I don’t know the specifics, only the thought of buying an expensive power bank just for helping power my CPAP and help me sleep is a bit grating.
If there’s power already in the car - why can’t I use that !?!!
Many, MANY thanks if you (or your subscribers) can help here….
Thanks a lot
Matt - from the UK.
Should be able to use the 12v outlet in the center console or the trunk area. Car needs to be “on” to work so either camp mode or be driving
you only tested the 1/4 mile after acceleration boost and not before? ...would be curious to compare.
yes, I didn't think about doing that before I added lol im dumb
Question are you doing these Boost tests with an dual motor AWD Tesla???? I am thinking about purchasing a Model Y Long Range AWD vehicle in the near future.
Now purchasing this boost feature, do you lose any normal miles range totals with one battery charge and doing normal driving, not trying to drag race the vehicle all the time?????
its only available on the LR Model 3 and Long Range Model Y, so if you described the car right that you are considering then yes, that car has it available.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Thanks, I just purchased the Model Y Long Range but not because of the additional Boost addon. Is that small amount of acceleration boost really worth the 2000 dollars? I don't think so unless I plan to drag race the vehicle - and in that case I would get the Tesla Plaid S. Kind of a waste of charge to be gunning the vehicle all the time. Not worth the money to me nor where/how I drive. The normal 4.5 seconds is fast enough for me.
Is that speed/time app built into the car or is it aftermarket?
it comes with the Dragy that you purchase. Thats how it interfaces.
It’s definitely worth it, I waited over a year to get it and I’d recommend the same.
If you are gonna do it, do it sooner than later
@@BeardedTeslaGuyyou think they’re going to raise the price?

So much fun
We just got a bid on a plumbing repair for $2000. A performance boost would have been a lot more fun 🙂
haha hell yea it would of
Btw, do you automatically lose some range when you get the acceleration boost?!?
not that I am aware of
1/4 mile speed?
It's too rough on the tires, but in a pinch, it might be good to be able to accelerate out of a bad situation.
Hope you're not living in your faster MYLR now! 😅
Thanks for risking all to give your fans all they need to know!
Haha
Which app are you using to measure the speed/times?
Its the Dragy app that comes with the dragy device amzn.to/3qoQQU0
I hope your wife forgives you! Haha, but I couldn't last more than a couple of weeks before I caved and bought the acceleration boost. Though I would love to go Model 3 Performance, I felt like the LR with the boost was the best bang for your buck while still keeping extra range and overall driving comfort. I couldn't bring myself to refund the purchase within the return window.
agree
Do you get the same boost as if you were driving the Model Y performance? That’s what I would want it for.
its really close to that performance.
Question, have you tested or compared whether the upgrade improves overall torque, not just 0-60? For example, for passing lane power or added torque benefits with passengers and gear/luggage?Getting .5 secs on a Vet could easily run 2k range so you have my support if wifey bends your ear. But still need to the chairs.
*get
I have seen videos of people putting it on a dyno and it does increase power.
I had this on my 2019 LR, low and mid range torque feels meatier for sure.
As i suspected, 0-30 got quicker, 30-60 still is 2sec. At my model Y it feels that 0-15 is artificially slowed down, similar to chill mode
yea, its interesting to break it down, starts to paint a picture.
what was the battery drain after these tests ? Just curious
Started at 99% and ended at 90%
Looking at the prices for new ones, a performance model y is only 3800 more. So the difference between that and a long range with performance boost is only 1,800. I think I'd go with the performance right out of the gate
Yea, not too much more for a P if you really want the full performance.
