Perfect sociopath that makes you nervous when he's on the screen, but you always want him to be on it at the same time.
I don't think the Deep is meant to be sympathetic at all. Eric Kripke said that the only reason there's any charm to the Deep is because he's played by a fantastic actor in Chace Crawford. I think that the writers intended his pathetic decline to be schadenfreude, because he's really the first villain we see act in an outright aggressively villainous way, and because he traumatized Starlight, the moral center of the show. You're supposed to laugh *at* him.
I was laughing. His little journey is hilarious. Though i dont know why he lets that chick finger fuck his gills? And i dont know why she would think he would find getting jabbed in his fish lungs erotic?
Eh... I'd agree we're mostly meant to be laughing at him, but only up to a point. I mean, the way that gill-rape scene was written, acted and shot made the whole thing seem just as disturbing as when he assaulted Starlight in the first episode (and I mean that even just ignoring the inherent body horror; a scene of a female sexually assaulting a male is normally played for laughs or at least not being as bad as the other way around - both those scenes would have still been disturbing if the genders were flipped). The Deep's been a pretty pathetic character (and that was entirely intentional) throughout the entire series - he's bullied by the rest of the Seven, he's well aware that his own superpowers are weak at best and downright useless at worst, he's actively forbidden to do anything that *he* wants to be able to do to actually help (and every time he tries, he fails pretty spectacularly), it's implied he's the most prone to objectification, and no one really hesitates to kick him out as soon as they're given an excuse to do so, and then once he is kicked out he's sent somewhere where he is essentially completely useless. By the end of the series (after said gill-rape scene and certainly by the end of his breakdown), I don't think we're meant to still be thinking of it in terms of "oh he's just getting what he deserves" and more that what's happened to him is horrifying in its own right. In a way, they've already used his character to touch on satirising another aspect of the "celebrity culture" they've got going on with the Seven: that ordinary people feel as though they have some kind of ownership over them and don't really care about them or, in extreme cases, even see them as being real people with thoughts and feelings, and personally I think that's an angle I'd love for them to keep exploring and using his character to do that makes a lot of sense. It's difficult because the creators have also got to navigate the fact that if they give him a redemption arc of any kind, a significant portion of people will inevitably get up in arms that a character whose entire introduction essentially consisted of embodying one of the most red-button issues of the day will be being made too sympathetic and therefore will be sweeping said red-button issue under the carpet, but I do think he already stopped being someone the viewers should actively want to see bad things happen to. Full-on redemption/sympathy arc or not, I betting he's still going to be much more of a neutral character from here on out.
There’s a really brief mention that Teddy (Stillwell’s baby) was found blocks away on the news, and it was considered an unsolvable mystery of the case. It’s really blink and you might miss it.
Just finished the series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Glad you guys reviewed this show and I'm looking forward to season 2. Favorite scene is my boy Frenchie hanging on that rope without a doubt
Nitpicking- A-Train would himself explode into pieces by running into stuff. This is an obvious plot hole. He is not impervious to harm. He had his leg completely broken in half. He seems to heal fast, but he can clearly be damaged. When he ran into Robin, it would’ve done the same to him that it did to her.
the homelander actor anthony star he played a good role in a showtime show call "banshee" as a ex con turn sheriff is a good show about four seasons and this guy he sells everything he plays.
In complete agreement. The costumes are designed to be more silver age, and the fictional character backstories created by Vaught are all designed to be closer to Silver age comic hero backstories. The story however is postmodern blended with bronze and steel age comic books. It's more reminiscent of a mutants and masterminds campaign with is a house rule that real physics needs to be calculated in and the character complications in flaws have to be portrayed realistically.
I wish you would have touched on Huey’s performance. This actor was the d bag in Hunger Games 2 and is so likable in the Boys. I hope he gets more roles after this.
I was not expecting an actual production. Since GOT ended I was getting worried. No disrespect , I love the podcast....but I donate for the ANIMATION. jk good to have ya back. West world is coming yo
You guys should watch the extra scene in the x-ray tab of Amazon Prime which shows Homelander as a youth in the lab being tutored. It shows his rise to sociopathy and his need for a mother dynamic. As Butcher would say, F'ing Diabolical.
I was beginning to think you guys wouldn't talk about this. It would be awesome if you guys went over the episodes like you did GoT since they already got the green light for season 2
0:50 that happened to me man.. went to skillshare to get my 2 months free promo u guys advertised then clicked and boom got charged $86 for the year.. smh
9:00 I think that's the big thing about Homelander. I thin he possibly COULD have saved the entire plane if he actually exerted himself, but he's so fucking lazy that he didn't feel like it. We never see him actually putting in any effort, ever. Even in combat he just calmly walks around cutting people in half with his laser eyes, we've never seen him strain or use even a fraction of his full strength. He's like Joe DiMaggio, where he won't even make an attempt to catch a fly ball, unless it's a situation where he can make it look completely effortless.
I just knocked out this show all this past weekend. I'm SO GLAD I went into it knowing as little as I did. I knew it was supposedly like a meta, subversive take on superheros, but that's all. Never saw a trailer or a clip, just a couple unofficial set photos and tons of praise. I didn't even know the heroes would be the BAD GUYS. I knew they wouldn't be perfect people, but not that our protagonists were regular dudes. My jaw was on the ground after the Robin obliteration. But I did know a s2 was coming, so expected a cliffhanger. You're talking about similar actors, Huey felt to me like a mix of Adam Brody & Joshua Jackson. But I get Hader, too. By episode 7 when we still hadn't seen Black Noir's face, I either thought it was eventually going to be some major plot reveal (maybe someone else we already knew), or it was some joke itself, like "there's already one black guy who's got a story, the second one's just to fill the roster so who cares what he looks like".
The wizzer was by far the best super being on screen ever. They finally realized if you have super powers you don't have to look like you have muscles. Best done character yet. Followed by fish Mooney for scary and the daughters of the dragon. Loved the boys by the way.
Homelander is an interesting character in that when we are first presented to him he seems to be the one good upstanding guy who is extremely naive about what everyone else is doing. We later find out that no only is he complicit in their crimes, he's the worst one of them all. Just like the *actual* United States Government!

The fact that Aaron says Voit even though he knows it’s Vought makes me think he does it on purpose to spite everyone.
Lamp Lighter is without a doubt a green lantern clone too
Homelander reminded me of a cross between Paul Rudd and Zach Morris
I am so glad you guys have decided to review The Boys!! The show kicks major ass I so love it!
Who knew Oliver knew so much about kpop
Just finished the series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Glad you guys reviewed this show and I'm looking forward to season 2. Favorite scene is my boy Frenchie hanging on that rope without a doubt
Go watch Banshee he Homelander is dope in that show on Cinamax really good
Agreed it is fantastic!
Starr is no Pine, you got to review little the series Banshee with Starr.. Brutal and awsome
the homelander actor anthony star he played a good role in a showtime show call "banshee" as a ex con turn sheriff is a good show about four seasons and this guy he sells everything he plays.
Lol Sanchez posters. They should make one showing the butt fumble
I guess a lot of people complained because when I logged into Prime it automatically gave me a month long free trial
Chris pine and Jason Batemans lovechild = homelander
I wish you would have touched on Huey’s performance. This actor was the d bag in Hunger Games 2 and is so likable in the Boys. I hope he gets more roles after this.
As an actor who basically always plays villains/assholes, the bit about how difficult it is to play a villain well was really nice to hear.
I was not expecting an actual production. Since GOT ended I was getting worried. No disrespect , I love the podcast....but I donate for the ANIMATION. jk good to have ya back. West world is coming yo
6:47 i thought the same thing.
So glad you all brought up the disturbing industry surrounding K-pop 👏🏽👏🏻👏🏾
Definitely one of my favorite shows of the year
There is videos on youtube of summarisations of the volumes. I found a really good one by Dannymalt
I have a free trial right now after I placed an order through Amazon, did Prime for free shipping... just finished The Boys and watching Hunters now.
I love that intro every time
You can say that A-train turned Robin into NERD SOUP!!!
... ok I'll let myself out now
I just knocked out this show all this past weekend.
Great review guys. Subscribed!
Hell yeah best notification I’ve had ina while
I highly recommend the comics. After watching the show, I read all the comics in a week. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.
Blew your mind didnt it? Lol.
wow. that kpop metaphor was a unexpected left turn.
Karl urban NEEDS to play wolverine
The Race was on ESPN+ like the big UFC fights
I kinda liked The Deep's side-plot. Its basically making fun of Aquaman. 😅
So glad you guys are doing this! Missed y’alls NY rap references in stuff that has nothing to do with it.
The end left my jaw on the floor.
Homelander looks like Mark Paul Gosselar
It didn’t seem consensual
hell yeah !!! finally a review on a show a like !
How about reviewing The Expanse
Do you use character animator ?
The wizzer was by far the best super being on screen ever. They finally realized if you have super powers you don't have to look like you have muscles. Best done character yet. Followed by fish Mooney for scary and the daughters of the dragon. Loved the boys by the way.
I got so excited when I saw this. Yay I was hoping you replace the got videos with something I like
Holy shit, I didn't realize the Deep looked like Vinny Chase until y'all mentioned lmao
Homelander is an interesting character in that when we are first presented to him he seems to be the one good upstanding guy who is extremely naive about what everyone else is doing.
We later find out that no only is he complicit in their crimes, he's the worst one of them all.
Just like the *actual* United States Government!
