Honestly I think homelander is an example of how to make an interesting superman villain, imagine him and superman in the same universe and homelander keeps getting away with the exact things he does in the show he's an amazing contrast to superman and I think could be a way way better dynamic than the joker and batman where people just say its deep because they've fought for years, but In reality we dont know ANYTHING about the joker at the end of the day hes just a dynamic to raise the stakes
3:26 Superman killing Zod was perfectly reasonable under the circumstances of the scene plus Zod himself says earlier in the fight "There's only one way this ends Kal, either you die or I do"
I get it though, BB was a combo of superman and goku where the saiyans pods are programmed to trigger the babies into leveling the planets they land on.
I think Chronicle is a much more realistic portrayal of kids with superpowers than Brightburn. They weren’t villains, but they weren’t heroes. They just used their powers of their own convenience and recreation, while still keeping a secret. The only one who did turn “evil” was completely justified. His life sucked: he was poor, his mom had cancer, his dad was abusive, he was bullied at school, and his only friends were his cousin and his friend (both of whom were way more popular than him). All of that coupled with the fact that he’s a teenager, it’s no wonder he snapped.
Since you've already got an Amazon Prime account and are itching for actually good TV, you should give Mr. Robot a spin. Show's so good it's not even funny.
I very much enjoy how well you explained this concept. There have been many videos covering the same topic, but none (in my opinion) with the same amount of detail and well put together presentation. Thank you for making this so well.
9:45 "The mud people". Well, I think you did not get into the deep meaning. There is another layer and it is the Greek mythology of "creation of humanity from clay". That also instigates that supes are like /Greek/ gods. For the [BrightBurn] being inferior I agree, [The Boys] show is much more deeper. Another good competitors are Watchmen and could be WORM, let's wait and see.
The best part about Homelander and the Superman dynamic is that they both represent America equally. Sometimes America is a selfish nation, other times it’s a selfless nation.
I hope this monster of a show makes it to the 7 season mark. Perfect number to create something truly epic without outstaying its welcome. Buffy ran that long and made amazing use of its time. Also the seven. It's just the right amount. 💖
@@donaldtusk2678 Not Russian, Americans are the only ones who feel compelled to put the main actor of action movies shirtless after having him almost sleep in gym.
It's also really interesting especially in that one mirror scene where he himself confesses that there is still a part of him that's human and craves actual love and affection and the Tyler Durden reflection of him is all "yeah no we have to do away with that". If as a child he had been nurtured properly that tiny bit of humanity would have been most of his personality.
@@TheWorstCritic Check out Mark Waid's Irredeemable. Homelander is like a psychopathic Superman while The Plutonian is an outright evil Superman. Like a Homelander dialed up to 11.
Plutonian is what would happen if an unstable psychopath was raised like Superman and thought he should be Superman, but it all goes horrifically wrong. Irredeemable was fantastic up until they explained Plutonian's origin and it went waaay downhill from there. I always thought Irredeemable was focused more on the aftermath of what if Superman snapped and went on a global rampage of death and destruction. Show Homelander's way more manipulative and calculating than Plutonian, but I think part of what works about The Boys is everyone is worried that Homeland will eventually go full Plutonian.
@@williamzebub3252 plutonian was not raised like superman. unlike superman, he keep getting moved around from place to place because people where afraid of his powers. i think plutonian is what happens if superman had none of the matruity or mental strength to handle being superman.
Great, so now there are now 2 evil Supermen: Brightburn, and Homelander. I could almost imagine a Villain vs Villain match: Brightburn vs Homelander. Who would win in that fight?
_Superman = how the United States of America sees itself._ _Homelander = how the rest of the world sees the United States of America._ More like Homelander = how the rest of the world see the United States government.
I think 3 to 5 seasons is a respectable length for any show. I can think of a lot of shows that stopped around there and stayed good. 6 seasons is pushing it, but there are a few. It's hard to find any show that stayed quality into and beyond it's seventh season. Though It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia springs to mind. So all and all I'm hoping The Boys doesn't have a sophomore slump and maintains quality for around 3-5 seasons.
@@TheWorstCritic Guess I'm just greedier. With the old trend of shows having around 20-22 episodes, and a lot of those being filler, I'd probably agree with you and say 3 seasons. But with the new trend of most shows only going on for 8-13 episodes a season, and storylines being much tighter for it, I wouldn't mind things getting up to five seasons.
To be honest, this guy sounds a whole lot like Rob Liefeld's original version of Supreme (Image Comics), a 'Superman' who started with no moral compass and the will to butcher masses of weaker enemies (like a group of terrorists who stood no chance against him). Supreme even butchers a team of superheroes sent to stop him (the name of the team evades me, but their leader had three right arms and one left arm - cybernetics, I think). He was eventually rebooted into being more like the Silver Age Superman.
Superman, Hyperion, and Homelander would all team up against Brightburn because Brightburn is just a monster programed to conquer the Earth and the others would have none of that nonsense. Then Superman and Hyperion would team up against Homelander and kick his ass because Homelander has never fought anyone as strong as himself. Then Supes and Hype would grab hotdogs together or something cause they're both heroes.
I genuinely feel bad for Homelander and I might even be so bold to say that his cruelty isn't his fault. His actions are beyond forgiveness, no question. However...if any one of us was invincible and raised like a lab rat with no feeling, it would yield the same murderous result for us as it did Homelander.
@@RachelAnnTaylor not exactly sure about turning out the same. It varies from person to person. Some might still be compassionate and sympathetic enough to not do what he did.
I've been having fantasies of the Ghost Rider being placed in this series and being naturally drawn to all of the corrupt heroes and taking them down one by one in the most brutal way possible. Then he goes after homelander. As homelander fights the rider he slowly realizes that he can't kill this thing bc the Rider is essentially immortal. He panics goes ballistic and then finally drowns in despair. The rider grabs him by his chains pulls him close grabs him by the throat and slams him into the ground. "Homelander", he says "your soul is stained by the blood of the innocent. Feel their pain.* The rider uses the penance Stare. Reflecting all the evil that homelander has done back into him. However it doesn't work. "What was that supposed to do??" Homelander asks. Left with no other option, the rider devours his soul instead of burning it as Homelanders screams of agony echo.
Interesting, but I think you've misunderstood the Penance Stare. It doesn't incentivize your mind to feel the evil that you've caused. Then it'd be worthless against anyone who doesn't give a shit, which would be roughly 100% of its intended audience. It *forces* you to feel the evil that you've caused. If you don't have the neural capacity to feel that evil, then it *grants you* the capacity to do so, simply so that you still feel it.
I don't know if he mentioning Dennis Quaid when talking about parents was an intentional reference, but if it was, it was a very good one. (The actor of hughie, one of the main characters in the show, is Jack Quaid, Dennis' son)
11:30 Actually, in one of the recent DC comic story lines involving the World Forger, it's revealed that superman's pod actually released psionic waves or white noise or whatever it was (someone please tell me what it was) that would make baby Kal-El more calm and complacent when he first arrives to Earth so he doesn't freak out around all these strange creatures around him (i.e. humans) Not a big deal, this was like a super recent addition to his mythos, but I thought it was worth noting because it's more or less the opposite of brightburn's pod that forces him to kill. The key difference (beside how they make their respective baby alien act of course) is the fact that Clark's only needed to be on while he was a baby so he'd be more accepting of humans while Brightburn's is continuously on to assure he continues his attack on Earth.
@@TheWorstCritic No, I get it, and you're right. This was just something I remembered off hand when I was reminded of the terrible reason why Brandon is evil in the first place.
Homelander is much more conniving than he is given credit
That's basically Lex Luthor. He keeps getting away with his crimes because of vast wealth, political influence and public opinion.

3:26 Superman killing Zod was perfectly reasonable under the circumstances of the scene plus Zod himself says earlier in the fight "There's only one way this ends Kal, either you die or I do"
Joseph Longo Its also comic accurate

Title: *Homelander - The Perfect Evil Superman*
Brandon Breyer: "Am I a joke to you?"
Yes
He sort of cleared that up tho at the end of the video. But whatever if you want to make the "Am I a joke to you?" joke than thats fine.
@@Solid_Gravy Sorry man. Next time I'm under one of these videos, I'll make certain to ask you if it's okay for me to make a joke.
Ultraman: "Am I a joke to you?"
He’s good, not perfect
Since you've already got an Amazon Prime account and are itching for actually good TV, you should give Mr. Robot a spin. Show's so good it's not even funny.
I’ve been meaning too
The best show
Amazon has Mr Robot and The Handmaid's Tale, two of the best shows of the last decade. Amazing in every possible way.
@@felipeoa9474 It is so strange seeing shows about how corporations are evil from Amazon

Interesting take!
This is the content I want to wake up for

The best part about Homelander and the Superman dynamic is that they both represent America equally. Sometimes America is a selfish nation, other times it’s a selfless nation.
I hope this monster of a show makes it to the 7 season mark. Perfect number to create something truly epic without outstaying its welcome. Buffy ran that long and made amazing use of its time. Also the seven. It's just the right amount. 💖
2:50 he literally, has two Eagles on his shoulders... in the comic book.
He also has one in the show
Its a joke ;) he was/is aware of that
@8:34 I'm guessing you missed that scene in Stillwells office? He's her good boy...
At least 4 seasons and still getting better at the end of 3. Can't wait for Season 4.
The fact he does have an Eagle on his shoulder 😂
This Homelander sounds a lot like one of the treatments for Hyperion in the Squadron Supreme.
I’ve heard a lot of comparisons between Homelander and Hyperion
"We see ourselves as Superman, the rest of the world sees us as Homelander" Holy fucking shit
Reaper I’m glad you liked that comparison
The Worst Critic it's just so fucking powerful
Homelander represents the most American thing ever:
Steroids.
Hahaha
More Russian I would say (there’s a reason they were banned from the Olympics)
I thought it was capitalism.
@@donaldtusk2678 Not Russian, Americans are the only ones who feel compelled to put the main actor of action movies shirtless after having him almost sleep in gym.

Critic, there is no "perfect" anything... this is just as close as it gets anywhere outside of heaven
Homelander is the closest to a perfect antagonist I’ve seen in a long time
Symmetrical things are perfect
Superman killing Zod is straight from the comics. He even does it in Superman II...
Mike Hunt Burns The guy doesnt know comics it seems
He broke his hand and had a big ol smile on his face and then he killed him
But he didn't need to... at least, under those circumstances
Fam we see him climax in the show, he does nothing
Technically speaking he has a eagle on each shoulder if u actually look at the costume lol
Both Homelander & Brightburn are a poor man's Plutonian, change my mind.
Not familiar with Plutonian
@@TheWorstCritic Check out Mark Waid's Irredeemable. Homelander is like a psychopathic Superman while The Plutonian is an outright evil Superman. Like a Homelander dialed up to 11.
cdizzle99z man, Plutonian actually had me scared when I read the comic. That man was an absolute monster.
He's come a long way since outrageous fortune where he played twins with two polar opposite personalities. Go Antony Starr!
Great, so now there are now 2 evil Supermen: Brightburn, and Homelander. I could almost imagine a Villain vs Villain match: Brightburn vs Homelander. Who would win in that fight?
Homelander easy
@@TheWorstCritic they both have super strength it won't be easy
Tighten
Homelander’s already used his powers while climaxing in episode 8, he used his super speed to finish in 15 seconds
wait til he sees omniman
I didnt saw any commercial (because I live behind a rock) but I saw a picture of Homelander and I was like: Oh, look, my new favorite character!
_Superman = how the United States of America sees itself._
_Homelander = how the rest of the world sees the United States of America._
More like Homelander = how the rest of the world see the United States government.
“The way they interact is like a mother and son”🧐
I think 3 to 5 seasons is a respectable length for any show. I can think of a lot of shows that stopped around there and stayed good. 6 seasons is pushing it, but there are a few. It's hard to find any show that stayed quality into and beyond it's seventh season. Though It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia springs to mind.
So all and all I'm hoping The Boys doesn't have a sophomore slump and maintains quality for around 3-5 seasons.
I think three seasons would be the perfect length
@@TheWorstCritic Guess I'm just greedier. With the old trend of shows having around 20-22 episodes, and a lot of those being filler, I'd probably agree with you and say 3 seasons. But with the new trend of most shows only going on for 8-13 episodes a season, and storylines being much tighter for it, I wouldn't mind things getting up to five seasons.
djsosonut Fair enough, I tend to subscribe to the mindset of “leave them wanting more, rather then them becoming disinterested”
"this part of homelander reflects alabama" made me laugh so hard
To be honest, this guy sounds a whole lot like Rob Liefeld's original version of Supreme (Image Comics), a 'Superman' who started with no moral compass and the will to butcher masses of weaker enemies (like a group of terrorists who stood no chance against him). Supreme even butchers a team of superheroes sent to stop him (the name of the team evades me, but their leader had three right arms and one left arm - cybernetics, I think).
He was eventually rebooted into being more like the Silver Age Superman.
I have the comic your talking about where he butchers the team of heros. Pretty badass issue.
neorenamon Interesting, might have to look more into that
I 100% related to the begin were he said after Daredevil season 3 he didn't watch TV afterwards
It’s so hard to get into shows after seeing something that great
Let's all agree that we need a Brightburn, Superman, Homelander, and Hyperion battle.
Oh god that’d be a battle for the ages
@@TheWorstCritic Definitely!
Superman would win due to feats
Superman, Hyperion, and Homelander would all team up against Brightburn because Brightburn is just a monster programed to conquer the Earth and the others would have none of that nonsense. Then Superman and Hyperion would team up against Homelander and kick his ass because Homelander has never fought anyone as strong as himself. Then Supes and Hype would grab hotdogs together or something cause they're both heroes.
His view of humanity as mud people fits when he can mold anyone like clay. 😆
I genuinely feel bad for Homelander and I might even be so bold to say that his cruelty isn't his fault. His actions are beyond forgiveness, no question. However...if any one of us was invincible and raised like a lab rat with no feeling, it would yield the same murderous result for us as it did Homelander.
He may has a troubled pass but none of that defends his actions.
@@suda_lifts Oh I agree. I guess I meant that if we were all in his situation, raised like he was- we'd turn out the same.
@@RachelAnnTaylor not exactly sure about turning out the same. It varies from person to person. Some might still be compassionate and sympathetic enough to not do what he did.
I subscribed. Thanks for the vid. I was laughing so hard at the Aladdin song clip I had to pause the video.
Feel their pain.*
The rider uses the penance Stare. Reflecting all the evil that homelander has done back into him. However it doesn't work.
"What was that supposed to do??" Homelander asks.
Left with no other option, the rider devours his soul instead of burning it as Homelanders screams of agony echo.
That would be an interesting comic
Interesting, but I think you've misunderstood the Penance Stare.
It doesn't incentivize your mind to feel the evil that you've caused. Then it'd be worthless against anyone who doesn't give a shit, which would be roughly 100% of its intended audience. It *forces* you to feel the evil that you've caused. If you don't have the neural capacity to feel that evil, then it *grants you* the capacity to do so, simply so that you still feel it.
fishworshipper I’m not super familiar with Ghost Rider, marvel isn’t my strong suit comics wise (I’m getting better), so thanks for educating me

Who would win a fight between Homelander and evil Superman from Superman 3?
Homelander
I don't know if he mentioning Dennis Quaid when talking about parents was an intentional reference, but if it was, it was a very good one.
(The actor of hughie, one of the main characters in the show, is Jack Quaid, Dennis' son)

I love this take!!! 😂 best "hero" show ever! Ive watched the 1st season 3 times now, as of now i randomly pick an episode.
It’s absolutely fantastic

Actually, in one of the recent DC comic story lines involving the World Forger, it's revealed that superman's pod actually released psionic waves or white noise or whatever it was (someone please tell me what it was) that would make baby Kal-El more calm and complacent when he first arrives to Earth so he doesn't freak out around all these strange creatures around him (i.e. humans)
Not a big deal, this was like a super recent addition to his mythos, but I thought it was worth noting because it's more or less the opposite of brightburn's pod that forces him to kill. The key difference (beside how they make their respective baby alien act of course) is the fact that Clark's only needed to be on while he was a baby so he'd be more accepting of humans while Brightburn's is continuously on to assure he continues his attack on Earth.
Yea I wasn’t taking new stuff into consideration. I was just talking about the classic image we have of Superman.
@@TheWorstCritic No, I get it, and you're right. This was just something I remembered off hand when I was reminded of the terrible reason why Brandon is evil in the first place.
Even still, the signal isn't what makes Superman who he is, it just helped him adjust to human life so he could grow up like a normal human being. Everything else that makes him the iconic, all American hero we know and love is the fact that he was raised by the right people.
Edit: Also, thank you for replying. I'm subbing for sure.
Parallax77 Great point. Also thanks for subscribing. I try to respond to most people if I can, or if it isn’t a criticism that I haven’t already addressed with a different comment to another person.
@@TheWorstCritic Yeah, looking through your videos, you seem to be the exact opposite of what your name suggests. While I don't agree with everything (mostly because I'm easy to please in all aspects), I do see a lot of where you're coming from. And you don't come off as a true asshole, more like critics like Jeremy or AngryJoe. People with a lot to say, but never come off as entitled or condescending to the audience. And I like that in a climate where most people seem to think their opinion matters most and others are just meaningless cries coming from "mud people".
One thing I will say about The Boys (comic and show) is that it inspires me to write fanfiction again. Thats something no american comic or live action TV show has ever done to me before. Kind of ironic since the fanfiction of the Boys so far is complete shit of the highest magnitude.
Parallax77 Thanks mate. I’m glad you liked the content. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter if you disagree with me, as long as we can engage in respectful discussion. I always try to remain respectful of my audience’s differing opinions in my videos and in the comments, because I would like for them to afford me that same respect. The Boys is really for philosophical people, in my opinion. As someone who's a fan of superheroes, mythology, and philosophy, I found it extremely intriguing.
They both have similar tones. The execution is widely different though. Especially in terms of substance and how they subverted the idea of Superman.

I agree with most of your points even though I liked man of steel minus Kevin Costner as his dad. The Kent's would never tell their son to let soy die no matter what. I believe because Zack Snyder went to Chris Nolan for advice he tried to put Superman in the Dark Knight world and that doesn't work. The Boys is a awesome show and screw Netflix for cancelling Daredevil IMO.
I wish Daredevil got a 4th season. Hearing the news of its cancellation hit me pretty hard when it first broke. Vincent and Charlie were iconic.
@@TheWorstCritic I completely agree. The only good thing we got at the end of the series was everyone got together again he fixed his relationship with his mom, foggy and Sharon.
