- Jack Antonoff, one of the most prominent figures in modern music production, sat down with Variety for an episode of Behind the Song, offering an inside look at his collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter on their summer hit "Please Please Please."
Personally this video is the reason why please please please is superior than espresso, the vocals, the production is totally genius
@@sadman1143 I always felt that way! The Grammy museum performance of espresso slaps tho. Before that performance I was MEH about espresso
Now let's not pit two absolute divas against one another 😭 I refuse to turn Espresso and Please Please Please be made rivals
@@SalmaGhanem-b7v i love espresso it's such a funny pop song but please please please's vocals are another level
@@KeepCalmContemplateYourChoices hahaha yes i agree but i wanted to speak from a vocals perspective
@@sadman1143 yeah the vocals are great! I love when sab shows them off!! I also rlly like the story and production in please please please. It makes me love it even more ! Also the mv is sooo well-shot
variety never stop doing vids like this
it's for the grammy campaign
@ALCHESTERTAGWALAN okay...everything is a campagin and promo for smth now, i just like vids like this
Check Mixing With The Masters! They also do breakdowns on the process. :)
i love just how absolutely nerdy he sounds. like he just starts going off and trying to excitedly explain how they work
people can say whatever they want about jack, but he really is a musical genius
What do people say?
He's won producer of the year at the grammys three years in a row. I think 5 times in total.
he's the best!!
@@nicocuevas2005they say his production is bland, boring, and overdone. i’ve seen a lot of people say they’re tired of him producing so many of the pop songs we hear today but i love his work.
No
Not sure why Jack gets hate, he’s an exemplar of a great music producer. Recently fell in love with his work. Great work Jack
His work with Taylor is mid
@@lucasb9285Says more about Taylor than Jack tbh
@@whydidimakethis9417 exactly, he can clearly flex his capabilities but sometimes the artists or songs don’t require the vast possibilities. It’s maybe why he stays busy because of his flexibility and not an ego driven style or approach to every project.
@@lucasb9285Taylor isn’t Mid Incel
he is a one trick pony and his sound is getting old
I love that he speaks to the emotional impressions he wants to achieve. And he’s so incredibly passionate about creating music, it’s infectious!
I'm not interested in this type of music, but his passion is contagious, and I learned a lot.
Sabrina Carpenter voice > Taylor Swift voice
@@Nor-p5vwhy compare, they both beautiful their way
I love learning how songs were made and jacks work is amazing
If this doesnt win Record or Song of the year...😭
It definitely should
if it's doesn't hopefully it's bc RAYE or Chappell won ❤️
he started campaigning for the grammy let's win another producer of the year
Why? What’s the point? Aren’t other producers deserving an award and some recognition? We know who JA is
This man has GOT to be neurodivergent. A literal genius. This is awesome! Thank you, Jack for your brain.
I know right? I had that exact feeling, he has to be hahaha and I fucking love it.
bro what 😭🙏
He seems on the spectrum
I’m a house DJ and producer who doesn’t consume pop but I love learning from producers in all different areas. Time and time again I see the love for the human touch being appreciated by these great producers. I took away from this video the passion to create not just music but soundscapes for listeners to peel like a never ending onion. The more you do for the love of the art the more tidbits you leave behind for listens to unravel from every single listen and that’s the beauty of our journey as appreciators of music.
There is nothing cooler than listening to creative people explain their process. His passion is contagious! I love that jack acknowledged Sabrina’s dreamy vocals. She does not get enough credit!
It's a masterpiece. Interesting to see how sounds from decades ago easily hold on to today's listening expectations, and hits are still being made using all those well engineered instruments
11:05 « whatever the fuck that is » LOL .. seriously a brilliant song and production
what the heck i've been listening to and obsessing over this song for the past 24 hours, wondering how they made it and now i come across this video to answer all my questions!! such a good song
dude the dolly comes through so clear in please please please
More Jack Antonoff!
I love watching these behind the scenes things with songs…it just blows my mind how technical a song can be! Beautiful! 🎶🎼🎵
please make more vids like this! One of the reasons y i love listening to diff versions of the song,instrumental/background vocals/harmonies
why do they never talk about vocal tuning. thats a huge part of the sound
if you just mean getting the vocal on-pitch then i think they don't talk about it because it's not very interesting and/or this song doesn't get very creative with it.
More the pitch of the sound wouldn’t you say? Not exactly much character in a microtone, is there?
@@BabadookJesus autotuned vs pitch corrected vs raw vocals sound different but we have no idea what they did to get this vocal sound. Its not raw you can hear that.
@@RickyBascom I assume by “pitch corrected” you mean a melodyne-type plugin. And no. If you have a great take, the tuning plugins don’t have to work hard at all. They really aren’t much of the sound.
@@BabadookJesus the vocal stacks sound thin like they have all been put on the exact same line. thats apart of the sound. harmonies and stacks do not sound like that from older music before pitch correction
I LOVE JACK ANTONOFF
Love hearing about Jack's process, his innate musical ability and great instincts. He's crafted a memorable track. And he's right - Sabrina's voice and performance are wonderful. Thanks for posting.
He is such a gem of a human being 💫 super cool video!!
this is spectacular
Love seeing this breakdown. 2 amazing artists!!!
Holy cow, to be able to hear with those ears.
Oh i could warch hours of producers talking about what they do
You can infer that he's such a great and sought-after producer not just because he gets how to connect the human and the tech elements of music in cool ways, but also because he can explain it so articulately and relatably.
I think honestly the man is just saying pop music is bipolar as fuck and we’re all here for it 😂
My jaw dropped! You are incredibly talented Jack. It makes me start writing songs 🎶
The 15 hours you spend for that 1 second of music is what separates you from the rest. World class🔥
Please please please is my most listened song of the year!!!!!
he's a musical genius. period.
Always kind of liked Antonoff. This video made me love him.
No wonder I love this song so much. I love all those influences 😊
He is something!
Don’t know what the fuck he was talking about but incredible
Everything that's special about Jack Antonoff came out of a checkbook.
I know Swifties (myself included) always rag on Jack Antonoff, but I recently went through all the TS songs he produced and a lot of them are my favorites. When he's on, he is ON. He's so good at what he does and going from something like fortnight to please please please really show his range in pop music.
please bring back FUN.
jack is so special
Wow.
One of the best producers of all time.
Loved this breakdown so much
Holy shit. Wow wow wow. SO GOOD
Oh jack ... They could never make me hate you
Jack you are such a genius ! what an inspiration ! THANKS
Variety is doing a better job than Mix With The Masters !
i DO NOT BELIEVE FOR A SECOND HE CRAFTED THE HOOKS OF THIS SONG during the songwriting process even though he was "present"
Why
@@kittymaya4615 look at Max Martin"blindinglights".. SIX writers.. SIX. He uses his clout to force his name onto songs that others have brough to the room - the same way artists do. Maybe in the past he crafted some hooks (which ? ) but hes been
cowriting years. Its well known that up and coming songwriters have to share credit when trying to break into the game and its going to be the young nobodies with the fresh ideas.
The same with Jack. Clout getting his name on track when the other writer brought the hook
You know, of all the pop girlies jack works with, i think sabrina is the one who fits his style of dreamy shimmery synth pop the best
Such a great and informative video, thank you for making this! All of that work really does shine through, the production in the song is such a treat!
So inspiring!
Jack is a genius!
This is soooo interesting
Jack has always produced in a nostalgia fueled way and I’ve liked that for his solo music. I think when he works with other artists it’s very hit or miss (lorde being a hit for me, taylor swift not as much).
Either way he’s definitely a very passionate and talented guy and if you think about it most of the great producers have had huge hits or misses (Rick Rubin especially).
The way he talks about all this concepts, I’m really able to see or I guess hear exactly what he is talking about.
I don’t give a fuck what people think about Jack the man is a true genius!
Record of the year for me
Producer of the Year, indeed. Producer of the Decade.
Love that I can’t read the full video title on the UA-cam app when I’m watching the video.
Make the video title within character limit challenge 2024
His voice crack lol 1:40
2:12 He didn't touch a lyric, but Kidzbop did! "Please don't embarrass me or my mother" just flows better
Please please please tell me you are joking
Fun > flow
that's terrible. what are you going on about. The only clean lyric that fits is 'don't embarrass me like the others'
More of these please please please! I did keep getting distracted by Jack’s wired mouse. Yikes. Although i do respect his commitment to low latency mouse action.
absolute genius
my fave song
pleassseeeee do one of these with the dare!!!!
brilliant man!
Coincidence is SOOOO Beatles inspired and we don't talk about it enough!!!
On one hand I do love the LinnDrum because the vibe and tone is so classic. on the other hand i HATE it because it's so thin, I wish there was a LITTLE layering and sweetening going on to where it has just a little more punch but still keeps the vintage sound. the rest of the production is so nice, that's the only small gripe I have with his style in general is sometimes he leans too hard on just (seemingly) raw vintage drum machines. not everything needs to be HUGE all the time obviously but there's been a handful of his songs over there years that make me feel this way. But that's just me!
So good
he’s genius! wow!
Never been this fast 😂
Amy Allen is a goddess
It sounds better layered than reverb so I’m glad he does that instead
I always thought that this was a Dolly Parton song ❤
This guy is a genius
My question is did he work on the stage production of this song because it’s slightly different, I wish i understood the concept of turning songs into sound on stage
This man is an incredibly astute soundscaper. Whether you like him or not, his ear for sounds and melodies is undeniable
If their voices are so great, why do they feel the need to autotune and pitch correct everything???
Let artists sing ffs!!!!
exactly
release that string version of please please please asap!!!!
He may have tainted Taylor Swift, musically - by producing 30+ of her songs with the same ethereal chill wave sound… but he’s still a genius and this video proves it!!
สุดครับ
me thinking the whole time that this would be a great song in bridgerton
Jack (Anton) off
I liked him when he played Louis Tulley in the original Ghostbusters movies
am i tweaking or is this video in mono??? why talk about laying and panning vocals if we cant get the effect :/
You are right, this video is in mono...There's a lot of videos in mono on UA-cam unfortunately and a lot of people don't notice it.😑
Hey industry, write in more key changes, please, please, please
Gênio Sagrado
With the flutes I hear the Beatles
WHY IS THE AUDIO FROM HIS SCREEN RECORDING MONO? That like- goes against the purpose of deconstructing the song :(((
Yep the sound is in mono... 😵💫
@@JeanPhilippeIchardMusic unfortunately 💔💔
Where’s the longer unedited version
if he loves sabrina's vocals, i'd bet he freak out if he worked with ariana grande
5:01 timestamp for my own satisfaction TwT
Rick glassman is so talented
When he talks about using a copycat on the vocal is that a plugin?
it's an actual hardware tape delay called copicat
Does anyone know what the copycat and space echo plug ins he's talking about? Thanks!
Not plugins, he's talking about vintage analog space/time fx units: the Watkins Copycat tape echo/delay, and the Roland Space Echo.
Is there a Jack's extended version?
He kind of looks like ZackScottGames :)
Yes but have you tried The Substance?
He 😂 still kept the tricks 😅of the instrument 🎸....
