I only found your channel two days ago and I must say that you not only educate me you also inspire me. Ive been carving small 6-8" tall caricatures but want to expand into carving larger things. Im 66 and have woodcarving since I was about eight years old. I have found a new set of full-size Ashley Isles containing 19 tools. I think they call it the Westminster set. The price is about half what a comparable set of Pfile tools cost.
Based on your video about tool selection I thing this set will get me started then I can add individual tools as needed.
Thank you for your excellent videos. I find it strange that our countries have considered each other to be enemies for so many years; yet in my experience, having met a good many Russians, I have genuinely liked every Russian Ive ever met, you included.
I suppose its our governments that are the problem.....one is just as much to blame as the other. We are fortunate that we can get past all the lies that all governments tell and get down to what really matters and that is the brotherhood of mankind sharing this beautiful planet that God has made and blessed us with. God bless you Alexander; I am very glad that you are with us here in the United States.
I do have two questions that have been bothering me like an itch in the middle of my back that I cant seem to reach to scratch it:
    1. What type of wood did you use on the two huge, beautiful lions you carved and what type of wood are you carving that huge ornate floral piece you display while talking about brands of tools and about being a political prisoner in Russia due to your beliefs. To me it looks like Basswood aka lime wood.
My second question is are those large carvings carved out of one piece of wood or are you gluing up pieces to make the size needed to carve your project?
If I may impose upon you for just two more questions:
    1. Where do you buy your wood.
    2. Will you please teach us your method for selecting then gluing up the selected wood for you projects.
You may have already answered that question and demo'd gluing up a project and I just havent seen the video yet.
    Your new friend,
    Arn from Jonesboro, AR USA

Alexander, thank you for the video. I have a good selection of unhandled Auriou carving gouges I purchased 8 years ago. This was about the time that they started making sets and moving away from selling them individually. So, my collection includes a couple of spoon gouges which I can't find anymore. Even though I haven't used them yet (I've been doing caricature carving since) I'm glad I have them because of the choice selection I was able to purchase and I can put my desired handle on them. Speaking of which, thank you for your advice on the rounded handle, I want to make handles this year and have been trying to decide on a style.

Good day Alexander! There is no stain on Pfeil tools because those tools, if I am not mistaken, are made of a composition of metalls such as Chrome and Vanadium. LAMP tools should be made of Carbon steel which is higly susceptible to rust. Some how I like more carbon steel especially if it is about sharpening. Thank you for video.

Hello sir! I have seen a few of your videos and I cannot thank you enough for your content.
I live on a large farm in Virginia and have access to many different hardwoods in addition to a sawmill and a solar kiln.
My great grandfather was a sculptor for the cathedrals in Cologne Germany but his studio got leveled during the Second World War and they made it to the USA shortly after. I have grown up enjoying many of his pieces and really want to try on some of his old sculpting chunks we still have save.
Long story short I am very interested as to what woods you enjoy carving from the US in particular the Appalachia area. I am currently planning on beginning to attempt to sculpt my little daughter out of a very big chunk of cherry. Thanks in advance!!

Is there any traditional carving use for incannel gouges? I know they were used by patternmakers and some joiners but I have some antique incannel gouges that otherwise have all of the design details of fine carving tools. I could always regrind them but would leave them as-is if there is a traditional use for them. Many thanks.

    • @Grabovetskiy
      @Grabovetskiy  4 роки тому +3

Mike, absolutely. It is very useful. I don’t have to many incannel tools. I love my incannel v tool for caring inside corners. I also use #9 for getting nice curve cut. For those of you who
will read this comment and don’t know what is incannel tools. Tools look identical but differ in one significant way, namely that the bevel is on the inside of the blade, rather than the outside.

Hi, great and very informative video. I am trying to get a couple of chisels for carving wagatabon trays. I have ordered 3 A.Iles. They have arrived today. One is straight chisel 19mm, No 1 (25 cm total length) but the other two are huge. 30 cm in total length! Are those for carving or rather wood turning? I am confused with all those numbers and tried to check their catalogue that did not help much (I am just a beginner). How can I get the right chisels? I am looking for straight and spoon gauges. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

All of the tool brands he talks about are miles ahead of the cheap Chinese tools I wasted money on starting out. I now have most of the brands he mentions, as well as others, and they are all great. My favorite tool that i use on every carving is, oddly enough, a 12mm #3 Stryi from the Ukraine. Otherwise I prefer Stubai, but that's just my personal preference. Not an expert at wood carving, or anything else for that matter.
