James Labrie sounds exactly like my mom did when I was practicing my drums in our basement and she was yelling at me for 10 minutes to come upstairs for dinner.
HAHAHAHAH you make my day with that stuff hahahahahahaa
😂😂😂
horrible terrible voice....
Yes He's singing FLAT
Surprised he lasted, with such other great talent in that band, he just seems to struggle at their level
His elegance while drumming is just a STATMENT on its own.
he has such great groove because he is basically danceing
@@krusher74Comparing Mangini to him, I don't know. Portnoy seems much more in control and balanced. Mangini seems much more focused on the showbiz side of drumming.
Sometimes it looks like the sticks are natural extensions of Mike's hands.
@@VincenzoNardelli Well, I kinda do know!
With all due respect, Mangini lacks creativity and he's also short on charisma, while Portnoy has tons of both...
Reminds me of McGregor fighting style?
5:23 Look at Portnoy for this next little section. He brought so much charismatic energy to the band, especially in a live setting. I do actually love the newer DT material and I think Mangini's a good replacement, but man do I miss Portnoy.
Yeah I always thought he was the best fit for the band 2 fantastic drummer
Mangini feels it different. I like him better but that's just my taste.
For sure
Portnoy is top 5 drummers all time. Hands down.
pffff....mangini might be the best technical drummer of all time, but he's so boring, like in taking a hundred sleeping pills.he,s so sterile.portnoy makes the audience forgetting about the poor, poor singer,s performance, something mangini could never achieves in a million years.
Portnoy is a machine! So smooth and almost seems effortless for him. Such a joy to watch and listen to him play. One of the masters!
He’s actually not a machine, and that’s exactly why he’s so good. Mangini is a machine, and you can hear it. It sounds too mechanical. Portnoy drums with his whole body, Mangini drums with his limbs.
So precise on the drums but his own style... love it.
5:23 - I love how he turned it into a funny bit. Love Portnoy both as a megatalented musician and human being.
Lars Ulrich would have catch the stick
Anyone else looking forward to Portnoy and Petrucci playing together on Petrucci's new solo album? 🙌
Can wait to hear best combination in the world again
Hell yea!
Damn excited man
fck yeaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Is it possible?
Labrie: "come on guys you sing this one"
Me: oh thank the goddess
I feel so sorry for him, like, on the studio versions he sounds great, but live (especially nowadays) he just sounds like he's in pain...
@@Rio_1111 He does a lot of vowel modification these days, when tighter sounds like 'e' are sung more like 'a', to necessarily relax the mouth and throat, but it's technique that's not unique to Labrie. But wow, he was desperately out of tune on this one, even if he delivered his highest pitches best.
@@Rio_1111 Terrible terrible terrible singing..
A true joy to watch this man play
The fluidity of his drumming, superb!
I love at the beginning where Portnoy was signaling to the sound guy to make sure he couldn't hear LaBrie's voice.
bruh
I laughed my guts out.
Bruh timestamp? 🤣🤣🤣
Oodles of tasty fills, all of which are complementary and none of which distract from the larger presentation. Nicely done, Herr Portnoy.
For real. His fills are so perfect. So tasteful and like you said, taking absolutely nothing away from the song or anyone else’s part. In fact, I’d say his fills are probably what make this song move forward so nicely. Every other part of the song is pretty basic with no one doing anything spectacular. It’s just an all out great song and his fills are really the highlight of the song to me. Oh, and the tone of his kit is perfect.
Portnoy’s skill is unmatched but are we not gonna talk about how he’s wearing a UConn Huskies jersey? Respect!
The Flawless Drummer on earth. Even moving mic wasn't an easy thing for other drum+backvocals 😍😍
That Rythmic modulation at 4:50 😍😍😍
Metric modulation
Portnoy whacking the mic out of the way without missing any hits was very impressive. That's not easy
He might as well keep there lol
It's plenty easy if it's anchored to the ground.
when you've played any song enough, stuff like that's actually really easy
How does he get the mic to turn back around when he needs it tho? That's what was most impressive to me. Looks like he has a foot switch for it or something
@@tomnelson341 he indeed has a human switch behind him, his drumtech! Usually Jo (Jose Baraquio) but here is the other drumtech that I dont remember his name
I had the absolute JOY of seeing him live with DT on 3 or 4 tours. His stage performance was just SO fantastic. Great memories, wish I could go back.
5:25 the result of LaBrie perfomance
I made a mistake. Well , a lot of mistakes, Lol.
I had this video on schedule, not for today, I didnt even put a description. I didnt double check the title and video. Among other things.
For the guys who dont know what this is about, I uploaded the video with the title "metropolis pt1", but this song is pull me under. I got confused because I also have a drum angle of the song metropolis, from this same era.
DT2BLZ where do people get all these portnoy drum cams?
The first time I heard on CD nearly 30 years ago, I couldn't image how he could make these sounds. Incredible Mike. One of the greatest!!!
Even with his left bass drum malfunctioning, Portnoy's performance is still epic lol.
Thanks! Now I understand the absence of the second bass drum. What a shame!
@@DanDirindon me too... Try to correct my earphone maybe its stereo 🤣
This explains the funny sound of the song. But it doesn't explain the bad vocals though
It must have been the mic 🎤 for sure not Mike ;)
lol i thought i was the only one who noticed
Portnoy makes himself look like one of the drums....phenomenal. I wish he'd come back...
...and he CAME BACK! :)
Wish granted
Man Portnoy is so fucking smooth and has such a killer groove. One of the best drummers of our time.
He’s average at best when comparing to the greatest drummers.
@@terryandrews9956Like who
One of the best songs ever written. A masterpiece
Cool, too bad the left bass drum is missing in the mix
From a drummers perspective it drives me insane bc it’s missing
The mix as a whole left much to be desired.
Thank god I’m not the only one pissed about this 😂😂
Bonham fills instead :P
@@GCrasherPR maybe it's the in ear mix that portnoy uses to monitor on stage
The left bass pedal mic isn't working. Sad
Yeah, I noticed that too
its a shame LaBrie's mic wasn't working too.
That’s one of the first things I noticed too!
I just thought he didn't feel like using double bass that night lol kinda interesting to hear what just the right foot sounds like though
I hear it and think “wow is this Lars playing?” But I see both legs moving so I think you’re right in that the left mic wasn’t working.
I like this Band, I like this song , Salute from Malaysia🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾👍👍👍
Between no left kick mic and hearing fills that aren’t matching up to his arms, they sounded great all together. Performance was spot on.
How many pieces of drum kit do you want?
Mike: I'll take all of them🥁
wow, you can feel how Portnoy is so anxious and he is leaning more into metal, breakdowns blast beats and shit. I love it! I miss him a lot in DT
manginis like getting a step dad , he a cool dude but you still dont really like him
@@krusher74 😆 LOL
Portnoy is a beast. He makes it look so easy
It’s a pleasure to watch Mike just toy with the drums experimenting as he goes along
JP has got to have the BEST tone in metal. In my opinion.
Absolutely amazing talent . Wish I could play like that . Thank you for sharing this.
Mike's open hats sound is the best!
The greats always make it look so easy and like they have so much time, never looking rushed.
6:47 is unbelievable. Playing that pattern, singing harmonies and playing with the drumstick at the same time
I'm not too sure what he's doing would actually rate as harmonizing.
This is what a bad ass drummer looks like and sounds like.
One thing i did love about being a drummer in a band playing your own songs live is knowing the material well enough that you just add little licks and splashes throughout the song.
The last time I saw DT with Portnoy was when they opened for Maiden at MSG. They closed with this and the arena was basically full by this point. They absolutely crushed it. Mike plays with a lot of feeling and he was the one who pumped up the crowd. From behind the kit.
-"Mr Portnoy, is Labrie the best singer on earth?"
-"He isn't even the best singer in DT.."
Labrie is terrible bit no worse then when portnoy insisted on doing backing vocals . If he was still in the band I guarantee he’d have 1 or 2 songs where he does full vocals
I wanna know how they make him sound so good on the record🤣
@@braedentaylor5366 autotune
You're right about that he's quite flat on a lot of those notes good bandeau
@@alexcolin2066 Tuning might be part of it, but honestly I think it mostly endurance/fatigue. When you suffer a vocal injury like Labrie did and you don't rehab it properly, you're just going to lose some serious vocal stamina. Labrie is probably fine in the studio when he is well rested and ready to go, and probably for the first week or two of a tour, but then after that its just rough and you don't have any chance to recuperate.
Un gigante de las percusiones, se disfruta mucho su trabajo, ( toca la batería ,casi igual que yo) he dicho MRHW40 saludos desde Puebla México
I love the double stick thow at the end.
God bless you brother
Maranatha!
How I miss him in this band.
James sounds like he he is drunk at a karaoke bar.
HAHAHAHAHHHAHA
Seriously. Thin sounding and low energy for him. Maybe he was sick...but the show must go on.
It’s actually Pull Me Under, not Metropolis, but thanks for uploading 👌
Edit: Ok, it’s correct now 👍
This video made me realize how much I love Dream Theater. Their drummer. Their Guitarists. Their Bass. Their Keyboards. Their Stage lights. Their Publicists. Their Bodyguards. Their Bodyguard's Mothers. The gas station attendee who fills up the tour bus up...... Just about everyone a part of Dream Theater.....
I totally get it..... everyone but the singer
@David Knight Dude you just took the words out of my mouth. Lolololol.
The best Drummer ever and my favorite!
Mike trying to bring the tempo up. But the old James just can't go. Props to the band for covering the weak link.
My top 1 drum hero all the time.
Sir Portnoy is not just a drummer, he is a genius of percussion and a keeper of time.
Never got into these guys but always like this song since the day it came out. I love videos like this of killer drummers. Todd Sucherman, from STYX does killer videos like this live.
Portnoy is perfec ❤️
Portnoy is Very impressive a Drummer, Singer, Conductor and good Actor(5:23)
And Kevin Smith stunt double
Tremendoo!! Pero que buenos músicos! Que magníficos. Deberían llamarse los dioses de buen ruido.
Portnoy is the best! I keep getting the vibe like as if silent Bob worked out and became a drum God...
No waaaaay Neil peart will destroy him
I guess the left bass drum mic isn't working
psyched that portnoy is on new petrucci solo album this fall!!!
Melhor baterista da atualidade. Seria incrível a sua volta ao Dream theater
Portnoy in beast mode as per usual
Tremendo baterista 👊👍🤝👊👊🔥👍👍🤟
That's why I miss these days. Old DT stuff w/ MP playing. Feeling and creativity as hell. PS: they really listen to James singing on their earbuds? I don't think so. I couldn't listen to this guy screaming like this everytime I was playing. It's painful
New petrucci solo album has portnoy on drums, and it's all instrumental, which means no labrie!
for god sake come back portnoy come back please
Like a few others on this planet, he is a drum machine. BUT A HUMAN ONE AT LAST...
Please don't "Pull me Under" with that voice
Always dug the music (musicianship) but the singing just killed it for me.
Ya... he's really not sounding like a professional here.
AMEN
So Grateful 🙏🏼 to have seen Dream Theater (twice 🙏🏼🥰🤘🏻) with Mr. Portnoy…The shows were @ smaller venues, which made the sound and experience even more Epic🤘🏻…Seeing Mike Portnoy’s drum-kit on stage, relatively close, is amazing…it’s beautiful and at that particular concert, ginormous 😳…Then to, not only Hear him play, but to WATCH HIM play 💪🏻…it’s everything 🤘🏻🥰🤘🏻…He had two chairs behind the kit and went from one to the other because his kit was so Huge 🙌🏻🥰💪🏻💞
PAWTNAWY!
this's my fav drummer
Shaking Portnoy's and Petrucci's hand is on my bucket list. Never happen,I wont climb Everest or K2 either, that wont stop me from dreaming though.
I got lucky when they were in town in 2009. We hung out on the side of the theater after the show for over an hour hoping we'd cross paths. They gave us a few min of their time and we were really nice dudes.
I'm hoping I'll get to meet them. One of my ex-school teachers who's also a close friend of ours is personal friends with Jordan Rudess and has his phone number and personal email. When they come out to Australia in November I'm hoping I get to meet them possibly.
unfortunately they wouldnt shake hands before covid, doubt it will happen. WHen you meet as many as people as they do , the most you give out is a fist bump.
Ariel helwani's nose mike hug me back on 2008-2009
Don't give up. I shook Dave Mustaine's hand (and he clearly wasn't enthused with the idea 🤣)
3:41 "Helloooo, engineeeeeer, hellooo!!! Helloooooooooo, my voice on in-ear monitor, Hellooooooo... in-ear monitor...
turn up the volume. Hellooooooooo, Helloooooooooooooooooooo...
Get out of here damn microphone"
Woww!!The Very Very Good Drummer! the number One on the World! Yeahhh!! I am Very Fan!:)) :)) :D:D
The master of drums 🔥🤘🏼😎
It's mind boggling that they lost Portnoy and kept Labrie.
Portnoy chose to leave, LaBrie didn't.
Ben 2000 yeah they chose not to let him have a break when he asked for one and forced him out. Labrie sucks and should be the one that left.
No it's not they didn't gave him a break, he said that the band need a break, which the rest didn't agree with. And personal reasons, not because of the bands. And he left, not kicked
@@eere3343 I think it's closer to the truth, that he had dollars in his eyes while helping out Avenged Sevenfold and fucked up the situation with DT. They didn't force him out.
I heard MP tried to return but the band was already committed to MM and worse is that 3-part drum auditions made MP look bad because he played with A7X. But yeah, if there's anyone who should leave, it's James.
4:45 amazing drumming skills
He's back!
The dynamics ohhh goshhhh!!!!
Labrie is so flat he’s almost singing in a different key
If I payed for this concert and Labrie sing like this I would ask for refund. FFS
I agree. Labrie cheese is ruining it
This was the spirit of DT. Maybe I am just old, but I confess that it's difficult to enjoy DT without Portnoy
I've seen Portnoy 3 times, VERY close (basically front row) but while he was in The Winery Dogs (AWESOME shows!) in Denver. I've also seen Mangini with Dream Theater twice (also in Denver), and Marco Minnemann when he was drumming for Satriani (ALWAYS an awesome show) also in Denver, and have also seen Neil Peart once back on the Signals tour. DEFINITELY some of the absolute greatest drummers of all time. I've seen pretty much all the big name drummers over the years and these guys are the ones that really stand out. Haven't gotten to see Thomas Lang yet though, from the vids he's awesome as well. Never saw Terry Bozzio either, unfortunately.
What a sick ass badass Drummer🤘🤘🤘😎
what's that lament in background?
He a little confused, but he got the spirit.
The spirit carries on
Smooth Daddy smooth as silk👍👍👍👍👍
No offense but ,La Brie Sounds like a very old woman trying to sing.
He is.
Very sad but true
Always thought I’d enjoy DT much more if they had a different singer
Labrie blows. DT would be 10000000% more listenable if they had a different vocalist.
Yeah orange, he is.... he is.... hahahahahhaa...
I wonder what they're all thinking when they hear James struggling
Struggling is a very generous word. Pretty sure I could karaoke this better.
They aren’t thinking anything cause they’re so used to it. That’s just another day for James.
They should be thinking live albums are out of the question
"too late to go back now I guess…"
I've played music for years. When this song 1st came out I would have bet everything I owned that the drums were a drum machine. Of course this was before Google, 1992. I was partially correct, Portnoy is an absolute machine!
Se extrañan tanto esos tiempos......
2:44 Wow, Mike blastin'
Amazing voices at 6:30... although it only lasts 7 seconds
Besides the dying bellowing cow on vocals it was excellent.
Man, talk about being in command. What a great performance.
He looks like he's trying pay tribute to Danny Carey with the drum cam + the basketball jerseys lol.
I thought I was the only one who noticed that!
D boss!! LGRW
Except Portnoy was doing Drum Cams before Danny on almost all his projects and tours, easily more documented behind the kit than Danny when you look for footage
@@FanaticDrummer And he has been wearing sports Jersey's relative to the locale for many years
