  • Jenna McKeown travels to Calgary to fish the famous Bow River which flows right through the city. The Bow has an incredible number of trout per mile and provide exceptional fishing for both Brown & Rainbow Trout. Jenna is guided by the great people at Fish Tales Fly Shop which is located not far from the river. Lots of great information on the fishing, techniques and Calgary!

Thank you for the kind words for Calgary and the Bow river. This is home and we love it dearly.

The bow gets heavily fished, not as easy these days to pull them in but still a beautiful river, feel super lucky to have it in my backyard.

Yes, used to be a great river 40+ years ago, but the commercialization started in the early 80s and whenever you commercialize anything you degrade it.

Enjoy it Harry, you entered the sport from an angle few do, most will jump directly into casting/fishing a fly rod. I would venture to say your connection to the skill and sport will be much greater coming from tying first.
I hope the best to you for catching your first fish!

Love Alberta. Great show. Please don’t remove those glasses until the fish is in the net. If the hook comes loose, it can fly right back into your face. Eye protection is paramount.

2 wooly buggers under an indicator works really well. Some people use 3 but I find it gets tangled more and I've also had strong fish hook the bottom when using multiple flys so I like to minimize the risk

I'm really hoping for an early spring this year, I really enjoy kicking the season off with a couple early season drifts on Bow before ice comes off the pothole lakes.

Jenna nicely done for the first float! I do suggest you get yourself a sunglasses lanyard. I see you pulling them on and off frequently and it’ll take just one time before a nice $100 pair becomes free divers treasure. I stopped caring about how they look when I lost my first pair 🙃

What is this? You don’t have to put every single fish on the reel?
There was some good information in this video. Beautiful scenery. Thank you for the video.

Interesting that he said to fight the fish with the tip and NOT the butt. In the Orvis instructional videos, they say exactly the opposite.

I'll split the diiference and fight it with the middle part of the rod. Should work out well🙄

Why do you say that? Where do you live?
I live in Idaho and it would be very strange to see someone fishing some other way from a Drift Boat.

Bill didn’t wet his hand before grabbing the fish, big no no for fish survival. He ought to know better.

Not many fish left anymore... its been neglected by Alberta, so don't be fooled by this marketing; its not what it was when it got its reputation.

    • @alan4sure

There are still lots of 20" trout, I fish it often. Neglected? It's all catch and release.

I will say that I certainly wouldn’t call it world class anymore but there are still quite a few fish to catch
