The eels are attracted by the vibrations of the hooked fish's panic and thrashing about. They hang around after due to the smell and are still looking for the fish. The big eels are all girls and when they get big like that are in the 10-20 year age group. If you are a bit slow landing a fish (especially in the evening) they will grab it off your line. One of the fish you caught had a scar around the cloaca and is most probably where she was grabbed during spawning by an eel. A good trip thanks for sharing.
I would love to fish for trout in Japan one day. I only caught one seabass on fly somewhere in Funabashi when I was there for work many years ago. Many beautiful places I remember traveling to.

I was literally thinking the EXACT opposite! While some care was taken, a lot more can be done. For example, I don't think the fish appreciates being dragged up stream with the rod or being let go before they're fully recovered.
@@largewoollybugger This is certainly true what you write but if I compare this handling of fish demonstrated in the video and compare it to the terrible and disrespectful treatment of fish I have observed from other "sportsmen" during my long career as a fisherman, this certainly is a good start, in my opinion!

Hi Johan, thanks for the demonstration of handling the fish in the water and not in the air. I think that is the message we need to get out there as it’s not much point in putting the fish back for it to die because of our miss handling. Love that stretch of water and am glad to see those magnificent eels are still there. I could never understand why the pakeha are so scared of eels. Its not as if they were dangerous to us, not like fishing in Australia! Cheers mate. Harera
Indeed, Pawel raised a very good point about the handling and we are making a concerted effort to improve our own handlings skills too. We have a pretty good system for quick handling and releases now and will keep raising it in videos. I love those eels, they are awsome. Can't really understand why anyone would be scared of them. They could probably give you a bit if you stick a hand out carelessly but that would be on you. Lovely creatures. Tight lines.
Enjoyed everything but the music. You have all of nature there, why do I want loud obnoxious music in a fly fishing video? Fish, water, and nature is enough!

Greetings from the Central Coast of California, loved your video and thanks for sharing. That stand of tree ferns on the bank is unreal, a dream spot for sure!
Thank you very much, love California but only visited San Diego, look forward to seeing more one day. The tree ferns here are indeed incredible, makes some of these places look like Jurassic Park.
Nice river and nice environment to fish in. You guys landed some lovely fish even if you missed a few. I've been fly fishing since 1988 and never had anyone spotting for me, though I often fish with friends. Very rarely a friend or another angler nets some of my bigger fish. It's just a different type of fishing here. Sometimes I'd fish within 20 meters up and down the river and catch fish there for hours. Rarely do I actually see the fish I'm about to catch. You guys look for fish and "hunt" for individual prey.
It's indeed different on many rivers here, especially in the south island but we do also have river that we fish without spotting the fish, especially in winter in the North Island. The sight fishing is much easier as a team effort as it's often impossible to see the fish once you get down to river level. It's definitely like hunting and results in catching bigger fish on average because the small ones are hard to see.
Small tip for the channel, less music would be better, with these kind of videos it's just nice to enjoy the sounds of nature and the water, also makes it easier to hear you both speak.
Thanks very much. I must say I don't normally encounter so many eels but they have been around a lot this season, which is good to see. They are an awesome native species.

Great video guys! Best 20 mins in my life! I think the background music is good and I see nothing wrong about it. Your river system is extremely different from the rivers here in PEI, Canada. Im also wondering what size and patterns of nymphs you were using? Good video guys! Keep it up!
Thanks so much, that's really good to hear. We generally fishing size 14 flies under a dropper and sometimes 12 or 16 on either side but rarely smaller or bigger. Personally I use mainly pheasant tail nymphs and hare and coppers in various weights from uweighted through to as heavy as a 3mm bead. Just depends on the depth of the water and how deep the fish are holding. These fish were a bit shy but if presented well they weren't fussy and would eat any pattern. In the South Island they can be easily spooked and fussy. Let me know if you need any more info.
I live in Maine USA and we have some nice trout fishing. Where you are is awesome and this is a great video. But are those palm trees or tropical trees in the background? What is the water temp? Just amazing. Thanks for a great video.
Thank you. This is a cool spot here in the North Island of New Zealand. What you see in the background are tree ferns. NZ has lots of species of ferns and some get very big. It's a temperate forest adjacent to farmland in a gorge so the water does stay nice and cool all year and perfect for trout.

You might enjoy my brown trout in clear water videos, mostly dry fly in gin clear water. Tight lines and hope you find another video that you will enjoy more.
I do indeed, good you picked that up. Learnt if from trouspey. Generally find spey casts handy even with my single handed setup. These are rainbows. Technically now steelhead in New Zealand but the Taupo ones are decendents of steelhead from California and behave much the same. These ones are river resident fish though.
Superbes poissons et bonne mentalité mais quel dommage de ne pas pratiquer la vrai pêche en nymphe sans indicateur dans cette rivière ou on peut voir les poissons. Merci pour le partage.
It's a nice looking reel and it held up well. It was long ago so don't know what the price is now but I do think there are potentially better reels in that price range e.g. the cheaper Lamson reels.
Hey mate, with winter coming up, what are your favorite techniques for trout fishing, do you essentially just swap out the dry on a dry dropper rig for an indicator?
It does depend on what kind of water I am fishing. If it's one of the Rotorua or Taupo lake tributaries where the fish are running up in numbers only for spawning, I will fish that differently from now onward. I tend to nymph those rivers with tandem rigs, a heavy natural like a big hare and copper or a rubber legged stone fly pattern. The later it gets in the season the more likely I will go for an egg pattern as the point fly but early season, especially if the water is clear I will start with a small nymph on point. If there is any colour in the water I will go for an egg patter and a bright natural say an orange bead hare and copper. In winter the most important thing is getting down to the fish. They hold on the bottom and in fast strong currents it can take a very heavy fly or splitshot to get down to them. If you aren't bumping or hooking the bottom regularly you aren't deep enough. If the water is deep a longer leader really helps, 12 to 15ft to your first fly is good. Hope that makes sense. If I'm euro nymphing i just go heavier and deeper and my dropper is often either an egg pattern or squirmy worm. I use the cleadrift soft eggs a lot and have already had success with them on a recent trip to one of the Rotorua tribs. They wanted nothing but a 4mm tekapo orange cleardrift egg. While the normal streams and rivers are still open until the end of June I don't do anything different on those as they are resident fish and not so intent on the spawning thing. An orange bead fly can still work magic sometimes.
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Awesome, I was talking to my friend and he mentioned the fish stop looking up in winter, though we both agreed we tend do hang up our boots and gaters for most of the winter, with the occasional spin on some of the Waikato spring creaks and waipa tributaries that allow it. We have been getting into fly fishing a bit more recently and were not really sure what we should try. So thanks for the detailed reply :)
We'll I would definitely not be hanging up my boots over winter. There is some fishing madness to be had in the Taupo rivers. All the ones on the easter side of the lake from June onward especially after it rains. Have a look at some of my videos from late last year and you will see what I mean. I had a few really good trips late last winter just before covid. Nymphing and euro nymphing both worked a treat
Glad you enjoyed it. Noted on the music and the net. Both have been changed since this video. Check out some of my new videos on my channel you might enjoy. Tight lines.

I do indeed, good you picked that up. Learnt if from trouspey. Generally find spey casts handy even with my single handed setup. These are rainbows. Technically now steelhead in New Zealand but the Taupo ones are decendents of steelhead from California and behave much the same. These ones are river resident fish though.
wow
奇麗なニジマスですね!日本よりグレイトに感じます。楽しんでください!
どうもありがとうございました、私は日本が大好きです。数回訪問したことがあります。良い釣り
Rambo trout❤but i like to catch brown trout
Brown trout are great, we catch plenty of them over summer but haven't seen any in this river yet.
Awesome video! I'll swap you for a month and you can fish the Green River in Utah
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully I'll get to do a big US tour one day and fish all over. If you get the chance do visit NZ.
Superbes poissons et bonne mentalité mais quel dommage de ne pas pratiquer la vrai pêche en nymphe sans indicateur dans cette rivière ou on peut voir les poissons. Merci pour le partage.
Thank you glad you enjoyed it. The nymphing style is very popular here in New Zealand. Tight lines.
Can you offer some thoughts on the Spider Traper Reel.?
Thanks
Dynamite
Thank you for this wonderful vid.
Can I suggest a) a larger net and b) dump the music as it adds nothing.
Glad you enjoyed it. Noted on the music and the net. Both have been changed since this video. Check out some of my new videos on my channel you might enjoy. Tight lines.
Freaking NZ man!
We are lucky ay, awesome fishing here
Great video, and fishing. That is premium flyfishing country. Btw,I coincidentally want to order a " v top" rod. What # Weight did you use please?
Thanks Ralph, much appreciated. I was using a 6wt V-Top I think but for this size river I would normally prefer a 4 or 5wt.
wow @ 9:20
Cool eels ay
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing That was unbelievable. Absolutely no shame xD
