What a neat moment for you. That stuff really sticks with ya and to be able to jog that memory for you is wonderful. Hope the rains subside this summer and you manage to get a few really great times on that river.😊
I have been bighorn sheep hunting the south ram river for 40 years, farther up the river not to far from Ram Glacier. The fishing farther up is pretty good but i must say the Canyon view is impressive. 40 years ago we always had a snack of cutthroat for one nights meal . We always said it was to save a pack horse but they sure tasted great. All the creeks like Ranger Creek have plenty of Cutts, the downfall of the area was the invention of ATVs . Thanks for your advocacy for the Bighorn Rec Area.
I'm still not sure making the reaches above the ftr c&r was needed given the access rules and the outdoor experience of who uses it up there. That reach is the one where access control and seasonal use precludes too much risk of over harvest and taking away the outdoor experience of a small fish fry is maybe a detriment and gov over reach by a biologist that made a mistake in opening a can of worms he shouldn't have. Love the waters up top, including that gorgeous spring 😊🥰

Ah, it was all a good effort back then and I really hold a passionate soft spot for the Ram and its cutts. I miss those simpler days but not the ongoing conflict with gov nor industry. Hopefully people can see the games at play with gov and our land use / fisheries depts and realize the fight is long from over and may ultimately require additional species with climate change - the Ram is really one that we can play with given the lack of native spp should climate change shift things. I know, damn the thought but over the coming decades it's a possibility. But the same conservation rules will certainly still apply.

Logging companies in Alberta are out of control the gov needs to see the value of the forests. Theyre logging in the highwood right up to the river. They woll never get it. So greedy. Great video thanks
if the GOA hadn't carte-blanche assigned FMAs and other long-term, landscape-wide based permits and allocations with the most basic of basic operating ground rules, these companies wouldn't be able to do as they do. We've been fed the lie that there isn't one culprit in our deteriorating landscape and habitat in Alberta, that there are hundreds of causes and effects. That... is a lie perpetrated by the one foundational cause of everything: the government of Alberta itself in what it allows.
@jensenflyfishing Alberta is not the same place that I moved to in 2002. At that time the government seemed to be focused on the preservation of parks and wild lands as well as access and free use for all people. Now returning to my beloved Peter Lougheed provincial park (of which I worked as a trail maintenance worker untill 2010) I see it is becoming run down and clearly underfunded or mismanaged. I have also learned that parks are going to a privatization model with juicy contracts being doled out to the ones favored by government. Furthermore, having to pay permits for day access to these areas is a slap in the face to all Albertans that were promised these areas were to remain free for all to use. I havnt even gotten started on the continued destruction of my beloved old man river headwaters through needless and senseless clear cutting. The greed is shocking. These forest are worth their weight in gold in 2023 when will the government wake up?
@@Mattymu the same has been said since the 1970s on a provincial scale as we've collectively elected the same gov over and over and over, which essentially has allowed the painful % decline in each 4 year term. Where we're headed in Alberta is a series of "pay your outlandish fees and stay on this trail so you don't see the coal mine beyond that 30m tree buffer" after having hopped a shuttle in YYC to get to the trailhead. Where things will be for coming generations is absolutely shocking, esp compounded by our population boom. Spinners and various hardware works anywhere along the east slopes rivers for sure and can easily out-do flies as you'll get far deeper on those cooler days or periods. You can access the Ram at the falls or via a few logging roads further downstream. Have fun!
Hello Jensenflyfishing, I really enjoyed your video. My dad and I are new to fly fishing and were hoping to take a trip to see the Ram River Falls area. I'm certain everyone has their favourite "secret spots" but would appreciate any suggestions on good places to start fishing along the Ram River particularly closer to the falls area. Thank you
Hiya. Not too many secret spots in a canyon river of rock and water - walk and you'll find 'em all 😊 It is a river to simply go, poke around and explore from accesses at hummingbird outpost, ram falls, Elk cr, via the N ram or trails off the N fork road. Be adventurous when clarity and flows allow while staying safe 😊
@@jensenflyfishing Awesome! I hope you got into some fish down here. I'll be back in Canada next year, got friends in Sundre so I'll be sure to have a fly rod in hand and check this river out.
I think late July? It's a tight balance as that shale and sandstone melts into the river with any kind of rain and turns the river the same color as that rock.
Good video, also a lot of great info. As an avid stream fisher here in BC where the practice is not used, one thing I've just never understood is the double dry/nymph "dropper" or whatever you call it setup. I get that it likely catches more fish, but it seems as if would just take away from the pure simplicity that fly fishing is to me....trying to find the perfect fly, getting the perfect presentation, the anticipation, and the reward when you get it all right. Don't get me wrong, I like "catching" fish...but to be honest, the less is more "fishing" part is my favorite thing about fly-fishing. Just an honest question...what happens if or when you do hook two fish at a time?
But if you fish a nymph with an indicator you are fishing a dry dropper. An indicator is no less or more fly fishing than a dry dropper, just the dropper system is the faster conversion to nymphing. We tend not to get 2 fish at the same time because we tend to target specific fish in specific lies, which is why you see the fish in our videos - we don't just go and fish to catch fish, we hunt interesting fish in interesting lies in order you can see them. Which of course leads us to say we don't 'just fish', rather, share interesting fish that are specifically found... much harder than just fishing to catch something. 😊🍻
What wild life are out there and do you come across any predator wild life? Wondering for photos while breaking from fishing days and a week trip that way 2023 summer. I can't find proper info on it
Not really come across too much predator wildlife in the canyon. Twice seen a cougar otherwise no. Of course there are wolves that prance through and black/grizz in the area but those tend to stay out of the barren canyon.
wanna ask what waders are u running. i have a set of bare 4mm and was hoping the trek wouldn't overheat me from the truck to river? also what am i looking at for timje of walk to river from truck too.
quite (most) often just a pair of thicker quick dry field hunting pants to be honest, or the Orvis ultralight breathable waders :) The Ram hike can be a park & walk or a dawn to dusk affair :)
Nymphing would be the best and most consistent way to catch fish in there tbh. Naked, sight or under indi. But we tend to love to just enjoy the visuals of the dry dropper 😊
I believe this day we had a 4 and a 5 wt rod with us. Either are pretty much our go-to rods for most streams. The 5 is slightly better for casting of heavier nymphs and handles wind better.
I use a quick dry pant and typically a hiking shoe (Keens) that fits my feet well as I like to feel my way along the river so I can be looking for fish more than not. I've found most wading boots to not fit me the way I need them to.
Visiting for the first time this month....trying to go prepared. watched this video 100 times trying to figure out where this access shown is....could i be so bold to ask? 😂 😢 everything online says DS from falls?
Well your handle spells it out, don't it? 🤣 honestly it doesn't matter, just go poke around and explore, you'll find what you're looking for and what you need to connect to and not just walk in our foot steps 🍻
I can't beleave someone could see a river like that and not fish it. I guess if he is a older gentleman then I'd understand not going. Trip in a river like tht could be highlight of my life tho. Noway uf miss it.
Well we decided to try and give it a go. Better to say no than for me to have to piggyback him back up! 🤣 Temptation is a strong pull so better to have good boundaries 😊
Yup. The good days when we had freedom to roam and it took time to do it. Now... 110kmh to Ram Falls campground and a race to the river between 6 or 8 trucks.
Yes it is. Given what I've done for it and the ongoing need, this video as well as the others we've published go hand in hand with what I hope is inspiration to fish it as well as sharing the need to get involved to protect it. I hope you do. All the best. 🍻
@@jensenflyfishing lol no I slipped and it cut I nice big hole hip level lol. Next time I will pack them down. You guys wear wading pants? Or just a light weight quick drying pant?
That's the trained rhetoric, isn't it? It's not logging, it's the manner and politics of the logging - there is zero need to have opened access to the entire region, nor is there any reason to log to the edge of the canyon, etc. If you're looking to argue, please go elsewhere as you simply will not win any argument on this channel.
Catch and release is just torture for fish, i get it for some endangered species and stuff or if the fish is too small to eat, but liked come one, dedicating time for a river to just be catch and release is a waste, thats just torturing fish
So what is your answer to most of Alberta's Eastern slopes, the entire S Island of NZ, most headwater streams in N America, and most floodplain, braided rivers globally, where any retention at all will collapse populations given many of our freestone rivers have 10 - 50 trout per km?

Which falls? If referencing the FTR really it's a LONG ways down to the best fishing but there's certainly good numbers from the FTR up :)
@@jensenflyfishing Sounds good! Thanks ill give it a try!!
Nice
Thanks for sharing Vidio
You're welcome. 😊 Thanks for watching.
Love it. What time of the year better to fish there? I guess August? Thanks
By August the clarity is great but the pressure is high. Mid july if you're from Alberta and flexible
@@jensenflyfishing thanks 😊
looks Epic
its a wonderful place on earth :)
Do you use a standard nymph hook for you PT droppers you tie with the tungsten beads.
Yes. We like the Daiichi hooks
Olá amigo.
Muito prazer em conhecer seu trabalho.
Saudações do POÉTA.
Saudações do Brasil.
We're glad you enjoyed this one too.
Man,God certainly perfected a rugged beauty.
100% :)
wanna ask what waders are u running. i have a set of bare 4mm and was hoping the trek wouldn't overheat me from the truck to river? also what am i looking at for timje of walk to river from truck too.
quite (most) often just a pair of thicker quick dry field hunting pants to be honest, or the Orvis ultralight breathable waders :) The Ram hike can be a park & walk or a dawn to dusk affair :)
How often do you use nymphs? Do you use indicator?
Nymphing would be the best and most consistent way to catch fish in there tbh. Naked, sight or under indi. But we tend to love to just enjoy the visuals of the dry dropper 😊
Must have a lot of chanterelles in this forest.
Definitely a neat old growth forest, Alberta style
Sorry if u mentioned it but weight of rods do you use
I believe this day we had a 4 and a 5 wt rod with us. Either are pretty much our go-to rods for most streams. The 5 is slightly better for casting of heavier nymphs and handles wind better.
@@jensenflyfishing that's cool , I'm in Alberta aswell been exploring crowsnest pass for the last 10 yrs but always looking for more quieter spots
What is your boot & wading pant setup?
@@jensenflyfishing haha couldn't ask for a better answer 😅 cheers, thanks for the awesome video.
@@nottellin8263 have fun poking about - it's a great creek to adventure in :)
You catch them before or after the falls?
pretty much all through
I’m really excited to check out the ram river, does it get pretty busy?
It's worth the effort - go for the "take it on" and enjoy the fishing :) It'll get busy as the water clears
is this up stream from the falls?
no dam on the Ram. Cheers
@@jensenflyfishing my mistake I meant falls
What time of year was this?
sometime late July maybe?
Hopefully this was last year as the Ram is still closed until June 16
Ha. The guy that got the river C&R fishing out of season. Ha! 🤣 yeah... previous year
Is there camping, easy access, etc?
Campground at Ram Falls and enough ways into the canyon if you poke about and find what you are comfortable with.
It’s about 2 hour walk but it’s worth it
Only 40 minutes or so to this water tho 😊
I was literally thinking during the initial drone shot.... who else fishes this besides mountain goats?
It's a fantastic place - so much so you really have to keep an ear out above you for rocks coming off the cliffs, loosened by those bighorns! :)
@@jensenflyfishing the things we do to see that slow cutty rise😂
What size rod is that 5 weight
Yes
Ropes, running shoes and rooster tail spinners in the 60's..
Yup. The good days when we had freedom to roam and it took time to do it. Now... 110kmh to Ram Falls campground and a race to the river between 6 or 8 trucks.
why hot spot the ram river? is the river name really required?
Yes it is. Given what I've done for it and the ongoing need, this video as well as the others we've published go hand in hand with what I hope is inspiration to fish it as well as sharing the need to get involved to protect it. I hope you do. All the best. 🍻
Just don’t wear your wader down lol. Learned my lesson last time lol.
😂 I take it you got a bit wet!
@@jensenflyfishing lol no I slipped and it cut I nice big hole hip level lol. Next time I will pack them down. You guys wear wading pants? Or just a light weight quick drying pant?
@@peirules154 never waders! 🤣 quick dry pants for sure😊
👍🏼🇧🇷
😊
Those baby goats...........
Love the bighorns 🥰
It’s humorous to hear people damn logging that live in homes made of sticks and author books made of wood pulp.
Boy sher is Windy .........
canyon winds in summer
:)
Wonderful videos like always, just a question. do you tie you dropper nymphs on the bend of the dry? or is the dry on a short dropper. thanks!
We tie the dropper tippet to the bend of the hook of the dry. Keep it simple.
To much talk
Channel not for you? Why be negative? 🍻
There's nothing saying you need to watch our content.
