  • Linda appeared on Darin Invasion 1970 (TV special). Base on the reaction from the audience @2:22, he left the stage in middle of the song.
    written by Gary B. White
    Universal MCA Music (ASCAP)
Love will abide, take things in stride
Sounds like good advice but there's no one at my side
And time washes clean love's wounds unseen
That's what someone told me but I don't know what it means.
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time
    Caught in my fears
    Blinking back the tears
I can't say you hurt me when you never let me near
And I never drew one response from you
All the while you fell all over girls you never knew
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think it's gonna hurt me for a long long time
    Wait for the day
    You'll go away
Knowing that you warned me of the price I'd have to pay
    And life's full of flaws
    Who knows the cause?
Living in the memory of a love that never was
Cause I've done everything I know to try and change your mind
and I think I'm gonna miss you for a long long time
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time.

if some one came out today, and sang in a voice like this, so pure and sweet and true, and lyrics so open, so stripped of "attitude" or "edge" or "irony".... would ears and brains even know how to respond, what to do? makes you wonder...think the world and the culture might be too brittle and hardened now, to accept...

What an interesting comment and question. I think the answer might be depressing. I do think the world has moved on hugely from this sort of sound and sentiment. At college I knew girls, not girl-power, and my friends and I did experience unrequited love and would have responded to a song like this. As you say, so open. The attitude came later although, even back then, we may have been capable of irony. I don't think we were as hardened as people are now. We were politer and. oh, so less loud.
Linda's voice is a wonder and she does make today's "divas" sound either harsh, loud and brash or impossibly girly and contrived. She dealt in emotion, not emoting.

Yeah, the times are louder, harder, more reactive : UNREQUITED LOVE nowadays will get you stalked, and dissed online, and quite possibly shot : a woman was shot and killed in a club last week : she wouldn't give her phone number to the guy.

iamintheburg I don't know what to say. I am shocked. In my day (and maybe I am being hopelessly, stupidly romantic here) unrequited love meant that. It was a quiet, subdued, secret thing. It was not a thing that got you killed. Someone had a secret crush; not a murderous impulse. The Times They Are A Changing.

From 4:18 to 4:26, the young man at the lower left at first seemed to me to be bored, but after a few more viewings I realized he was crying. This is a testament to the powerful emotions that Ms. Ronstadt could elicit. Just beautiful!

This song reminds me of my young days.
As a man, Am I a lucky man?
I dated a woman in my 20s. She, who became a school teacher after my military service, visited me and said she could not forget me. But I sent her away...... At that time I was studying for something. Recently, I'm glad to hear that she has been living well after years and years.

As I recall the press, he said a bit later that he realized that the only thing left for him to do in that song was get off the stage. Darin was a pro, and realized that Linda was lost in the music and had the audience under control. The only thing for a pro to do is step back and let it happen.
I haven't seen her perform live since she was a high school kid doing coffeehouses in Tucson with her brothers in the mid-60s, but even then she could make you feel the song, not just hear it.

Her vocal range and the crispness and clarity of Linda's voice is simply amazing! Linda was a superstar back in the late 60's and early 70's. The Eagle's credit Linda with encouraging them to form up back in the early 1970's when Don Henley and Glen Frey were working in Linda's backup band. Linda supported their decision to create The Eagles and remain friends with them to this day. She also had a hand in writing and helping to write some of their early songs.

Because Linda was a stadium platinum super star from 1974 thru the early 90s, when she gave up the arenas and celebrity by choice, to raise her kids and focus purely on the music, it took awhile to comeback to the universal realization of just what a phenomenal vocal instrument she blessed us with.
