  • Hello and welcome (back) to my channel 🙂
In this video, I'm swatching Beam Paints handmade watercolours which have been on my wish list for a while. I bought the paints from an art gallery / shop called Alchemist, which is located in Scotland.
Beam Paints is an indigenous-owned, female-led paint company run by Anong Beam. In her own words - "Beam Paints is the result of a multi-generational love of pigment, paint, colour, and innovation. I was raised by my artist parents, Carl Beam and Ann Beam, and was taught from a young age how to harvest hematite pigment in the LaCloche mountain range near our home in M'Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island. Beam Paints draws on my early educations in Indigenous pigment and expands it to encompass all paint traditions. A focus on high quality pigment content creates sublime artist materials, with plastic free packaging" (www.beampaints.... A blend of gum arabic and Manitoulin maple sap is used as the binder to create paints that have saturated colours.
These paints are luminous and some re-wet easier than others. This shouldn't be considered as an issue - these are handmade paints produced in small batches using natural ingredients. I also noticed that the paints mixed slightly different from other handmade paints like Deep Deep Light and Dirty blue - these paints wanted to remain separate for longer, especially the paints with PW6 in them (e.g. Beach Rose and Sky Colour), maybe because of maple sap. However, this wasn't an issue while painting or once the paints had dried.
Fall Poplar Yellow (PY174), Strawberry Red (PR170) and Almost Night (PB15:1) is the primary trio which I purchased as a set. I bought the rest of the paints as individual paintstones and the choice was based on "let's have a bit of everything". 🙂
I store the paints in a glass jar and I might keep it that way. I just need to make sure that the paints are dry before putting them away.
I hope you enjoy the video 🙂

Thank you for watching 🙂 I think I now have a process for paint exploring: swatching, mixing and colour studies.
