  • I've been curious about Daniel Smith's Colours of Inspiration palette for a while now because I've heard many UA-cam artists talking about moonglow, shadow violet and cascade green which are included in this set. Eventually, I decided to purchase the set and have a closer look at these paints.
This set has a great mixing potential with quinacridone rose as the primary red and phthalo blue (green shade) as the primary blue. I personally find the cadmium yellow medium hue a touch too warm for a primary yellow, however I will be playing more with these paints to see what colours I can create.
Daniel Smith have also included two PrimaTek paints in this set - serpentine genuine (in my opinion, best for painting pears 🙂) and green apatite genuine.
I found cascade green quite interesting. I had to stop swatching and check that I was using the correct paint because second layer looked like a different green in comparison to the cooler green I used for the first layer. As for moonglow and shadow violet, they are slightly more granulating than what I've captured in the video. I would also use more water when using these paints to see more pigment separation.
I also appreciate the inclusion of the 12 empty pans because that allows me to expand the palette or just add more paints of my liking. I already have some Daniel Smith paints so I'll be adding them to this tin.
Finally, I've decided to use Saunders Waterford cold pressed 100% cotton paper going forward as I need the sketchbook for something else. I like this paper (I'm using a bit of a loose sheet) and they work well with the Daniel Smith paints.
    Enjoy the video🙂
P.S. I don't know what happened to the tape, probably I should've secured it better 🙂

I just found your channel, and I love it! Thank you so much for doing these…they’re so helpful! I don’t know if you’re concerned with lightfastness, but window-testing by Kim Crick & other artists have found Moonglow to be fugitive. 😢 It’s the PR177 (Anthra Red, iirc) in the mix, but Kim has a great video on how to mix your own on UA-cam. (She also has a lovely website with loads of watercolor pigment info & a database.)
I saw the notes in your description about Cascade Green, & some of the other colors. Rose of Ultramarine & Cascade Green both do marvelous things when given space to flow with more water. I had to paint a full landscape for a class using only one color, & was able to get everything from sky/lake/mountain/pine trees out of CG…it’s one of my favorites! Also, idk what the climate’s like where you live, but I saw the comment about not needing to pre-wet your paint…I live in a fairly arid place, & ALWAYS pre-wet my paints, of which DS is the majority. Especially the Primatek Colors (I love the Serpentine & Grn. Apatite too, btw); I’ve collected a number of them over time, & they can be extremely hard to use if I DON’T rewet them first. Though to be fair, all of mine were poured from tubes, so idk if the pre-poured pans respond differently over time. (Again with the lightfastness, if you’re concerned, don’t use Rhodonite…it’s in the try-it set of 6, and as fugitive as Opera.)
Sorry for the long message. Thank you again for putting these up on YT! I’m excited to watch more of the handmade paints, especially from companies I haven’t heard of yet!

Hey, thank you so much for such a lovely and kind comment :) I'm happy to hear that you like my little corner of watercolours here on UA-cam. I'm quite relaxed about the lightfastness because I paint for my own joy, but most importantly, all lightfastness ratings are for museum / gallery conditions and there are also other things involved in measuring it like humidity and acidity. Watercolours will always be prone to fading, especially when diluted with plenty of water.
I agree, granulating colours love space and water - the more, the better. I live in England and the weather's been awfully boring lately with the summer still to arrive. I'd say it's perfect for watercolours as the paint doesn't dry too quickly or slowly. I never use a hairdryer to speed things up, just letting watercolour do its own thing. I also always pre-wet the paints as it helps me to get to the masstone easier, especially when using pigments like green earth PG23.
Thanks again for your generous comment :)

Thank you. I haven't seen this palette until now, and it has an all-star cast. ⭐️ It's rare for me to find a palette that is so agreeable. 😊

Would you do a video explaining what the letter/number codes tell us about each color? There’s so much to learn about the properties of each paint.😊

Of course, thank you for suggesting it. The world of pigments can get a bit overwhelming 🙂
