ERIN oh my gosh this is going to sound crazy. But I went to CSSSA Animation this year, and my roomate Doi got sick and went to the nurses office. She said that you were an assistant nurse during CSSSA? She told me about your amazing art but I never got the chance to meet you, and I realized WE BOTH TOOK JOHN MAHONEY'S CLASS 2 YEARS AGO AHHH HI ERIN
Omg! That is so crazy!!! Yeah I did take Mahoney's class AND took Doi to the doctors! That is so neat! Ahhh! Nice to meet you Katherine! I hope to see you and Doi at CalArts soon!!!!
Thanks so much Paul! I don't get to anywhere as of late haha. I live near Santa Monica nowadays, so normally stay around here. However, I would normally go to Saugus Cafe with Robert Lence and some friends. Do you know him? He's a awesome guy and incredible teacher. Can't remember what year he attended.
What helped me to learn how to shade is to squint while drawing and only look for the darkest darks. I try to focus on the dark areas and think of them as shapes. Try out only doing black and white first and see if that helps. A really good exercise is drawing a glass of water everyday and only focus on the shapes in the glass. Try not to think of it as a glass while drawing it. Hahah. I hope that helps! Once you get the hang of black and white, then you can try adding midtones! These are just some things that helped me!
hello! i just wanted to say i love your art so much, its beautiful. i really want to get into calarts, and you inspire me so much, so so much! i was wondering what you use to color your drawings? is it watercolor or markers, and what kind? it just looks so amazing!!! anyway, thank you
Hey! Thanks so much!!! I used gouache for the color. I just started using gouache like 3 years ago and totally fell in LOVE with how opaque and rich the colors are. If you do use it, make sure you pages are thicker. This was a moleskin and the weight of the paper was 111lbs. I hope that helps! You can totally get into CalArts if you work hard and are persistent!
YOU DREW THE NURSES OFFICE AT CSSSA, ITS SO BEAUTIFUL
Good eye!!! Hahahah. Thanks!
