    This sketchbook is absolutely gorgeous- and I wanted to ask- do you have any tips for applying to calarts/ tips for creating a good sketchbook? Thank you- and good luck!

    • @Meppity
      @Meppity  5 років тому +2770

      Snowy Thank you!! I‘m no expert on sketchbooks but after looking at a bunch of other calarts sketchbooks for the last four years, there’s some things that I feel need to be included:
      Literal stuff to include:
      - life drawing (nude and people in environments)
      - environment studies
      - animal studies
      - layouts/concepts
      - character exploration
      - movement studies
      Stuff you should demonstrate you can do:
      - draw characters that have a sense of movement/life
      - create and draw solid objects that work in a three dimensional space
      - understand perspective
      - understand anatomy (preferably not just of humans) they like skeletal studies for that.
      - push shape and form to make unique characters
      - use a variety of mediums. You can focus on a few as a specialty like me with my fineliners and don’t worry about colour too much. Understanding value is much more important.
      - tell a story. It can be as short as a single frame or as long as a full length storyboard!
      - develop your work from studies into explorations and more creative ideas. For example the tree people in my yellow book. I drew the trees then created characters based on them then drew the characters interacting with each other.
      ^^^ I feel this may be one of the most important yet overlooked points - people can be incredibly talented technically but it doesn’t offer much if the sketchbook lacks flowing ideas and is more like random scattered, undeveloped doodles.
      Other stuff to be aware of:
      - don’t worry about how your stuff looks!! Be experimental and loosen up. A sketchbook isn’t for finished work (I know mine has a lot of polished pages and I’m worried about that - don’t be like me)
      - they want to see the inner workings of your brain. Write notes/diagrams/connect points and build on previous ideas. Cross stuff out but don’t hide it. Maybe comment on what you just drew with a post-it.
      - they want to be able to see *you* through the book. If you keep in mind that by the end of looking through your sketchbook, the admissions person should have a decent idea of who you are, your interests, your home, your personality then you’ll be on the right track. I tried to focus mostly on my life in rural England and my travels.
      Hope this helps! I might edit this comment if I think of more points.

      @Keep Rocking! College isn't just learning how to "art" - It's also a fantastic place to establish connections with people already in the industry and to meet the next generation of artists. It also provides students with the space to experiment and develop themselves without the concern of losing a job. It's not for everyone but it's what I want.

    I don't think you'll even last through your second year at calarts before you get scooped out, its good to make connections but with what you already know combined with a year and a half there you can probably jump right into the industry even just now you could definitely make a living doing freelance work. calarts has a lot to teach you but those student loans pile up fast and industry experience is going to teach you just as much as the school will. Try to prioritize the people you need there because that's what'll matter when you're out, i love your stuff and i can tell you'll be doing great thigns real soon!

    Wow, did you really fill two sketchbooks in three months?? It usually takes me so much longer. Do you have any tips to speed up sketchbook completion time? Also, love the work, it's beautiful and inspiring (motivates me to let loose a bit with my art.)

    • @Meppity
      @Meppity  5 років тому +46

      Having a deadline helps!! But also not worrying so much about what goes into the pages - loosen up! I have a list of stuff to draw if I'm stuck which helps keep me going during art block. Just saying it took over a year to complete my previous two sketchbooks which had the same number of pages so this speed isn't off limits to anyone :D

    Most Calarts sketch books I've seen are always so serious. Lot's of studies, no flavor or personality to them. However, yours is so unique in that I can see you have a fun loving nature through your art. You added such fun elements, and I love it!

    So thankful this was recommended to me! I've been going through an art block and this is unfortunate because I have an art project that needs to be finished, but after seeing this I now have some inspiration! Thank you! I hope you get accepted ( I've only known you for 8:00, but I'm positive you'll get in)

    very nice! good luck, realize you are already successful in advancing your talent by applying. When my daughter applied to SUNY New Paltz for art she had to bring in a large portfolio of her work, including professional photographs of items that could not travel well (her amazing art teacher did that for his students). She was assigned a review and interview day and when her portfolio was being reviewed by the art team we were taken on a campus tour. It was quite a stressful day but she was accepted, just as her older brother had been years before. Nowadays with digital art and design there are more opportunities for successful careers for art and design majors than at any other time in history. Don't forget to enjoy your youth and school experience whenever you can. Take care to cultivate close dependable friendships as you each will be the lifelines you need when dealing with the stress of the classes and assignments, particularly a senior project if you have one. Looking back you will realize that these years flew by.

    This is absolutely gorgeous and impressive. Did you have to remove/rearrange/cover up some messed up drawings? It just feels unlikely that everything went perfectly from start to finish. I noticed you glued a lot of drawings - maybe you drew them on a separate sheet of paper so in case you screwed up you wouldn't have to restart the entire sketchbook? Or maybe you glued them on top of messed up drawings?
    I also love how you went from one study to another, one style to another. Did you plan it out before starting or did you organise after you made it all (and glued in the right order)?

    • @Meppity
      @Meppity  5 років тому

      Gabyo Hi! Thanks for liking my sketchbooks!! I had very little exact plan of what was going into each page - however I created a checklist of skills, subject matter and media I needed to demonstrate so I fed a lot off that. Otherwise, I’d draw what I felt like on that day. I also didn’t always go in order.
      I made plenty of mistakes in the book!! A lot aren’t noticeable because at first glance everything looks polished from using pen but they’re there. The more glaring errors were covered by post-it notes. This means that although I fixed the issue, you can still flip/remove the paper to see what lies underneath.
      The only times I had to cover a whole page were 0:40 and 1:56 - I actually drew on the covering paper after I glued it in though. Same goes for all the paper I stuck in. Bold, I know lol. The other papers I stuck in weren’t to cover anything but to extend my canvas. I like panoramic stuff and didn’t want to flip through pages of the same content but rather have one long spread.
      Basically, nothing was drawn before I attatched it to the books (although sometimes the sticky notes took a few attempts)
      Hope this answers your questions!

    • @_Gabyo_
      @_Gabyo_ 5 років тому

      @@Meppity Thanks for the explanation. This is freaking impressive. You gave yourself very little chance of redrawing, that's bold indeed. Also I love the fact you hid mistakes with sticky notes but you can still lift them up to see mistakes underneath. That's a very honest thing to do. Congrats!
