One thing that I really liked about Howard's version of "Conan" is that he is often terrified; but that his fight and flight reaction is jammed at "fight". It makes the character more complex than his movie versions.

    • @mikegrossberg8624

Euan Smith: Not so! Conan ALWAYS knew when "discretion is the better part of valor", and getting out of town as fast as possible, or avoiding a fight, was the only smart thing to do
A guy who fights when he doesn't HAVE to isn't a "hero", he's an IDIOT.
Nobody could say that Conan was an idiot

@@mikegrossberg8624 You are correct. Like in Beyond the Black River, where Conan spends most of the story high tailing it away from the Picts. I also like, in the story, that Conan uses magic to throw the beasts off his trail. As much as I enjoyed the Arnie films; book Conan was always more complicated. 👍

@@euansmith3699 If Howard had seen the movie, he'd probably have been really PISSED
His description of Conan was nothing like Arnie!
Howard's Conan was not a "body builder", bulging with muscles. Howard called him "pantherish". The only times he wrote of Conan's muscles bulging was when he was straining against opponents or lifting/moving heavy weights
Also, Howard's Conan was a lot more educated than Arnie's. While the movie's version was no ignorant barbarian, he was no match for the written-word character, who spoke several languages(albeit with a "villainous accent"), and was well acquainted with literature, both mundane AND esoteric

One of my favorite things about Conan is that his stories are so non-linear, you can start at any story, and it will introduce you to the character perfectly.

The original novels were a reason Marvel editor/writer Roy Thomas got interested in getting the license from Glen Lord, who had the copyright for Robert E. Howard's Conan stories. He actually agreed to give a licensing fee higher than Marvel was prepared to grant; Roy had to convince Stan Lee to greenlight it. Thankfully, the comics were a hit. Robert E. Howard's other creations, Red Sonja/Kull were all likewise adapted by Marvel Comics.

1:50 Edgar Rice Burroughs had cross-over places, events and characters, in his various novels, from Tarzan visiting Pellucidar 'Earth's Core', and his Mars {Barsoom}, and Venus books. They all seemed to be part of the same universe. My favorite Conan was the animated series "Conan the Adventurer". It felt like a side story to "Dungeons and Dragons" the animates series.

Couple years back I went on a big Howard binge.
    Love his stuff!
Great world building and just pages of sheer damn manly adventure!
Never got into the Conan comics, but when you read the original stories you get why the character is a big deal.
Also love the idea that Howard and Lovecraft were penpals.
Feels like someone should do a story where they team up and solve mysteries or something.

Howard was Truly a genius. Conan was one of the first truly modern heroes; a character who is savage and lawless, but noble in a way gentlemen could not understand. Conan is really Howard's masterpiece, and his most lasting work. Though Solomon Kane is my favorite, Conan got Howard's philosophy across the best. Howard is still one of my favorites, along with Tolkien and Lewis.

The Robert E. Howard stories are amazing. If you get the chance, check out this book. Every story is a gem. I swore off Marvel, but I did pick up a couple of copies...maybe I'm a little bias, but I felt they really didn't capture Howard's flavor or that of the original series. I saw they are also doing a Belit book-I haven't looked at it. I'm afraid to...The character of Belit is really complicated. She's Howard's suicide note. I doubt a writer not in Howard's mental state can write her.

Positivity to you sir. My father had cancer & were currently dealing with that. It's not something that's so easy to get off ones mind, but a good Conan read does help a bit! Sad Amazon decided to pass on a Conan series which was presented & was based on the Howard books as opposed to simply the ccharacters. No Conan from Amazon- here's to hoping Hulu or Netflix pick it up as he's such a great hero & I for one could go for a good swordsman series!

It's a shame to find out that Amazon passed. Howard's Conan stories are awesome! Hopefully some other media organization will pick him up and do the character justice. My biggest fear is that some company will get the rights and try to sanitize the story lines which would guarantee a bad product and failure.

But Sherlock is more mainstream and fantomas is more cult. seriously if you get the chance resurch a bit about fantomas he has a facinating history. From having a trilogy of movies based on him during the 60s to being the major influence on most Italian superheroes made during the Italian silver age boom to even haveing his name used for the Spanish translations for the ogon batto/golden bat anime. Hi J Michael Martin! Thanks for watching! I'm not 100% sure off the top of my head, but I think Tolkien didn't get published until after World War II? I know he was writing back in the 1920s...but I vaguely remember reading somewhere that Tolkien was writing for almost twenty years before he got published. I don't know much about CS Lewis. I can't really comment on him. Frank L. Baum who did the Wizard of Oz predates all of them. Maybe King Arthur might be the first literary universe. There's multiple knights/characters who are all living in the same world even though they are being written by multiple writers who live hundreds of years apart.

"SS Van Dyke"? Golden Age mystery fans are gathering with pitchforks now! SS Van Dine was the pseudonym of the author who wrote the Philo Vance detective stories.
Ah, Conan! Yep, I first ran across the Conan comic and magazine back in the late 70s, and quickly picked up the series of Conan books published by Ace, which was a reprint of the original Lancer series from the 60s. That series included not just REH's stories, but stories by L. Sprague De Camp and Lin Carter, and even one by Bjorn Nyberg, so my appreciation of "pure" REH took a little more time. But Howard was a writer that no one has successfully copied (that I know of) and it becomes pretty easy to appreciate the originals after you've read Conan stories by other writers. Some of his other characters are pretty good, too, especially King Kull, but I never cared too much for Solomon Kane, and even the Bran Mak Morn and Cormac Mac Art stories are only so-so.
As a pulp writer, REH tried his hand at a variety of different genres, including mysteries, sports, horror, adventure, and westerns, with varying degrees of success. His serious westerns are actually pretty good, and the Breckinridge Elkin stories are rather fun tall tales in the Pecos Bill tradition.
There's just no telling how much more he would have created and written if he had lived. And now I need to go back and re-read The Hour of the Dragon, his only full-length novel of Conan.
