So it seems Domino Lady is basically the female equivalent of James Bond. Makes me feel better about some of my ideas for writing a character that is basically the female equivalent of Solid Snake. XD
Hi Pensive Scarlet! Another female James Bond type character was Modesty Blaze. Her novels were really big back in the late 1960s and early 70s. I've never read one of her books. Maybe we should both give her a look?
The Blaze stories were smart and well written with intriguing plots and characters.
@@FizzFop1 Modesty Blaise... She is originally a comic strip character. The novels came later, being more adult then the comics. Titan Books has been reprinting the comic strips.
There is a movie that is based on one of the early stories that while the plot is ok, how they showed the characters is WAY off...

So DC Comic's co-creator had ties to gangsters. So confused here.
Don't be. A lot of publishers are rumored to have ties to mobsters.
And he took DC Comics from its founder.
Cool Nerd magarine a great many of those guys had such ties. I first heard Moe Anenberg’s name as a gangster; then I found out Mr Anenberg’s long history as a distributor of magazines in the 20’s and before.
Even a cursory history of New York City shows most every business paid off the mob one way or the other. Including movie companies and the US Navy.
And and here we are in 2021 - and its still the same for all media ..... except they are not called gangsters any more!
Gangsters were and are involved in numerous forms of legitimate business all across America.

I'm loving this series. I have always been interested in the time of history that my grandparents lived through.
DC should reintroduce this character, her pulp-plot reminds me of The Huntress (Helena Rosa Bertinelli). I could easily imagine an elseworld story of Helena in an universe similar to that of Frank Miller's Sin City.
This timeline would also fit perfectly with The Gray Ghost from Batman the animated series. The Domino Lady's code of no love before vengeance, would definitely add a sad femme fatale angle to the story. As well as giving The Grey Ghost an ethical dilemma similar to Jack Nicholson's character in Chinatown. I would imagine he has the same No-Killing rule as Batman, with surely would complicate the matters.
You could even have cameos from Green Hornet, Black Bat, The Shadow and Doc Savage...

The Domino Lady is in public domain so anyone can use her...that's probably the reason why DC doesn't try to do anything with her...or other public domain characters...they can't own them because the copyright and trademark rights have been allowed to end. I think in some ways DC's Harlequin (at least in the Suicide Squad movie) borrowed from Domino Lady in regard to not being able to have a "normal" life.
That why I suggested making her an els-world Huntress, but heavily borrowing from The Domino Lady of course. :-D
I just really like her design. I'm also pretty familiar with the Film Noir genre, Double Indemnity being a personal favorite of mine.
So the idea of combining the fun and hijinks of a comic book (like Archie or Donald Duck & Co) with the heavy stylized drama of the Noir genre (corrupt cops, mysterious men, murder plot and the complex psyche of a dangerous woman). Just sound amazing to me.
Properly quite difficult for others to imagine ;^D
As noted, the Domino Lady is considered public domain. the current owners of DC Comics ignore the spicy pulps that Donefeld owned.
Others in the New Pulp world are making us of Domino Lady with new prose stories.

The "Captain Marvel" trademark was allowed to lapse because Fawcett never bothered to renew it after they ceased publication in 1952, but that's trademark law, not copyright law. Copyright is what matters when discussing the public domain.
The character of Captain Marvel is still under copyright, with Fawcett having sold those rights to DC in 1980. DC also owns the trademark for "Shazam," while Marvel Comics picked up the then-lapsed "Captain Marvel" trademark in the 1960s.

Hi PD, I really enjoyed doing this one. I didn't know that much either until I jumped into the research. When I started reading about the "Spicy" and "Shudder" pulps, I got hooked.
Maybe the Domino Lady can be retconned by Marvel as part of the Invaders.

FYI 2 publishers have reprinted the original 5 novels- Bold Venture Press and Steeger Books. Airship 27 has done 3 volumes of new stories, and others have had the character appear in new stories. Win Scott Eckert had her marry The Avenger, and they had a child who also became a heroine and appears with Doc Wildman's daughter...
Domino Lady would make a cool Persona to use for a Persona 5 series game. She fits the thief rebelling against the corrupt society.

My biggest gripe here is just that Lady Domino sounds so much better even if that's probably just modern comics sensibility

Hi Moon, I'm aware of Olga--I came across her story while doing research. I even put her in the beginning of the Phantom Lady video. I came across a couple of websites that told her story...her adventures sound confusing. I have no idea where to find her complete stories?
I really fell in love with The Domino Lady while researching this. Two years ago at Pulpfest, I purchased Domino Lady Volume 1 by Airship 27. It was a very enjoyable read. I found a "like new" copy of Compliments of the Domino Lady on Amazon for $14 plus shipping. That has all the original stories and art in it. It was a fun read. She had so much potential back in the 30s that never got developed. Shame. The B+W images I made for her was fun to do also...I tried to replicate scenes that where in her original stories. (What's crazy--one of my favorite images I made I forgot to put in this before sending it to youtube).
One super-heroine I'm adding to "The To-Do List" is Madam Madcap. She might be the first female avenger. I think she's a Johnston McCulley creation? I've been wanting to do an episode on him and his work. I've been digging up stuff on him for years--but it's difficult to find material.
FizzFop1 Hey Fizz, I've been doing some research of Olga for quite some time and her story is quite hard to find... I never read the original one, because I believe it don't have online for the internet.
But after doing some research I was able to find a site that was selling Olga Mesmer stuff. Sadly I was with some problems in my computer and lost the name of the site.
Her story was that her mother run away from her planet and was able to find a place on Planet Earth, but she then found a man who she was in love here and married him, but he was a mad scientist. While she was pregnant he exposed her to massive X-Ray and since she wasn't human she did not died but had new powers. Since she didn't know how to control her powers she killed the Scientist in an accident and left Planet Earth to come back to her planet. But she left Olga with some married couple, because she probably know that her planet was ruled by other people.
Olga story is when she and Rod go to her planet to save her mother who now was a slave... and the story goes on.
You have been doing some amazing search of these characters Fizz, the most complete video of the character Black Bat belongs to you.
There other character who is really interesting too, his name is Hugo Danner aka Gladiator. Some people even say that he is the character that inspired the creation of Superman.
Anyway, I hope that in some way or another I have helped you with this.

I've read about Hugo Danner--Gladiator--he's like a second tier of ideas to work on. There's too many great characters to choose from! I checked my records and I have found some of the images for Olga Mezmer...I think her story was half text form and half comic. I would have to build most of her story on my own which will take some serious time.
I was surprised that we were more than 10 minutes into this before any mention of the comic books, and then it's just mentioned in passing, almost as a postscript. Not to diminish the importance of the original pulp stories, without which none of the other stuff could have existed, but in terms of the number of stories generated over the number of years, Domino Lady's second career as a comic book character has far outlasted her first one, and has arguably even had greater relative impact on the comics than DL did on the pulps. Just saying. Without Ron Wilbur, none of what eventually followed probably would have happened, so a bit more discussion about him and his role in DL's revival wouldn't have been out of line.

Hi OL!!! I did a script for Black Cat when I first started. She's a character I've always intended to do. I want to do a cosplay version of her like I did with the Black Bat. I've talked to a woman I know who is a fitness model and martial artist to play her...I haven't pursued it because of the money and time it takes to build sets and costumes. I really should do some sort of crowd funding thing to cover the expense. I have a huge resource her in town (Columbus Ohio) to do her story also because there's the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library has the Milton Caniff archives. Black Cat artist Lee Elias was Caniff's assistant for a number of years--might find some really cool stuff on Elias there. So many stories and so little time!

Hi Nidellaneum! Great to hear from you again! Glad you liked my recreations...I based them on scenes from the original Domino Lady stories! I made them with a 3D program called DAZ. It takes a long time...but it's worth it. I found out that a number of comic book artists use that program. It's actually used for making CGI people in movies. My computer isn't strong enough to do full blown animations...but I can make still frames. DAZ is awesome! It's sort of like a digital version of playing with action figures. The program is free to download. You buy clothing, actors, props...and locations. It's perfect for creating scenes for pulp heroes. I'm currently working on some artist recreations that I hope will blow people's mind.
i cleaned a old attics out years ago and found over 300 golden age comics and i found a nice stack of the detective pulps and i threw them away i just didn't know they were collectible i had so many life magazines and comics i didn't know what to do with them i kept a bunch of good comics and sold a load of them way to cheap and i sold the life magazines for a 100 bucks i wish i had it to go over with but i did keep some great comics

Hi varanid9! Thanks for watching. I'm in the process of doing this. I've got part of a Spider and an HP Lovecraft script done. I've been collecting info on the Shadow for a while. My biggest problem is I can't spit out the videos fast enough. It takes time doing the graphics and research.

Hi Paul! Thanks for watching! I started doing these for a couple of reasons...the big one being a lot of the history of comics is being forgotten because the people who lived it is no longer with us. There's a lot of great stories that are on the verge of being lost and I want them to live on.
Do you have any plans on doing The Shadow, The Thunderbolt, and the Green Hornet? Green Hornet had always confused me. Is he public domain or not?
Hi Daniel! The Green Hornet is not in public domain. I've thought about doing a video on all of the characters above. I've been trying to find a copy of Alias:The Thunderbolt--I would like to illustrate his story like I did with The Domino Lady. I've also been thinking about doing a top ten list of Johnston McCulley's heroes (which would also feature Thunderbolt).
An interesting forgotten hero of the golden age has to be Moon Man. Appearing on the pulp magazine Ten Detective Aces, Moon Man was a Robin Hood style of character, stealing from criminals to give to the poor and needful, during the time of the Great Depression this premise just clicked with readers.
He probably had one of the most creative costumes, a big spherical helmet made of the same material as one way mirrors, giving it a silver reflective finish on the outside but allowing him to see everything while wearing it. Hence his name Moon Man.
Moon Man is one character I've been wanting to investigate more.
@@FizzFop1 Moon Man is a very interesting character, of that I'm sure. Just his design alone, with that mirror glass sphere helmet, sets him apart from other pulp heroes of the time. Also, like many pulp heroes of the time, he is seen as a criminal by law enforcement and pursued as such by both the police while also the criminals he steals from. The big difference is that the Police Chief in charge of trying to capture him, is also the Moon Man's father, that of course does not know his son is Moon Man.
Another interesting thing is that, just like The Black Bat had a comic book adaptation without using the name or look of the character in "The Mask", Moon Man also got a comic book adaptation in the same way, as Ace Periodicals, that published both pulp magazines and comic books, made the comic book superhero "Raven" that was just Moon Man with the name and costume changed.
I must take issue with your rather slanted mini-bio of Huey P. Long. Some of us are still of the mind he should have been president. Otherwise, good episode.

Interesting. Speaking of which, in terms of comic books and not pulp magazines, what would you say is the first character to use an alter ego of a costumed superheroine? From what I've seen, it seems to be the Magician from Mars, from Amazing Man Comics #7. Would you agree?
Hi electricmastro! I just looked up The Magician from Mars...I wasn't familiar with the character...By Gosh, she is a super heroine and the book is dated November 1939! I've always read that it was Fantomah who was the first super heroine, but she didn't come out until 1940! WOW! Discover something new everyday...I should make a video about this. Thanks!
By the way, the earliest female masked avenger I know of is Madam Madcap written by Zorro creator Johnston McCulley. I think he created her a couple of years before Zorro.
@@FizzFop1I've also just learned of the Crimson Rider, from Jumbo Comics #9, though there seems to be less solid information regarding her, with some sources listing her and Wilton and the West as the same character, as well as Jumbo Comics having odd dating practices, such as the listing of "August-September, 1939" for the #9 issue (some sources seem to say August though).

Captain Billy's Whiz Bang was real??? I thought that was just from the Music Man?
Oh we got trouble! Right here in River City! Lol! I watched the Music Man the other night on TCM. Yes, Captain Billy is a real person and Captain Billy's Whiz Bang was a real magazine! Wilford (Bill) Fawcett was a field artillery officer in World War I. The army slang term for an artillery shell was a "whiz-bang." I think Fawcett got injured and was reassigned to work on the Stars and Stripes military newspaper and that's how Fawcett got into publishing. I've never seen a copy of it, but from what I understand, Captain Billy's Whiz Bang was a really crude joke book and it contained a lot of single panel comics.

Although he was ruthless, his dictatorship was benevolent in suppressing the worst parts of the South that we are familiar with such as severe income inequality and lack of education, tied with racism. Huey P. Newton, the famed Black Panther hero, was named after him

The spicies are such a fascinating niche in the history of both pulps and erotica. They seem so tame by modern standards but they certainly raised eyebrows in their day, hence their inevitable demise when the prudes noticed them.
Honestly surprised that I've never seen a supers porn/erotica parody character that wore nothing *but* a domino mask. Seems like such an obvious anti-costume if you just wanted to show some skin. There may be one out there, but if so it's eluded me. Closest thing thing to a superhero whose powers were dependent on being undressed was the Flesh ("He's Super-Strong...and Super-Naked!") from the old Nickolodeon Action League Now! shorts.

Hi Clay! Thanks for watching! Yes, Archie had a title called Pep Comics that featured the debuts of The Shield in 1939 and Archie around 1942. That comic had no relation to the magazine that was printed in the 1920s.
