The seats are softer, the steering wheel feels like it has better leather, and the fender sound system with the sub eclipses the Mazda's Bose/Sub system easily. HOWEVER, the VW parts and service is plagued with the common German Car issues: Maintenance and parts. It's expensive. My car started leaking coolant, and it cost me 1300 to get the entire assembly replaced. Oil changes are at 110.00, and I can't imagine how much the haldex (4 motion) service will cost. And considering that the CX-5 has the same engine and drive train as the bloated CX-9 in a package that's 20" (!) shorter and 600 lbs (!) or more lighter, it appears to be a superior choice from a performance standpoint among Mazda's crossovers. On the other hand, the typical use case for a compact crossover doesn't prioritize performance for most buyers. And if a customer is looking for a vehicle that seats five and has cargo space both behind the second and first rows, the Tiguan offers considerably more than the Mazda. The Tiguan provides cubic ft of cargo space behind the second row compared to 30.9 cf for the CX-5. Total cargo space in the Tiguan is 73.5 cf compared to 59.6 in the CX-5. In terms of seating, two vehicles are very close but the rear seat is about 2" wider in the Tiguan and that makes a difference in fitting three passengers there. In terms of back seat features the Tiguan has a single USB port compared to the CX-5's two ports. But it's worth noting that the Mazda's rear seat USB ports are in the fold down center console. I just got a 2021 Tiguan SE R Line with the blackout package and black wheels. Looks amazing. Also considered the CX-5 but opted for the Tiguan because of interior room and better leg room. I drives with nice power and is very smooth. This Tiguan is a replacement for an Audi A4 Avant.
And just imagine the extra money you have to pay for maintenance on the Tiguan without getting luxurious feel you get from a BMW? In short, if I have to pay that much money for maintenance then give me some luxury that I get to enjoy first lol
We have both w our cx5 being the normally aspirated motor. There are two areas where the tiguan shines. When extra space is absolutely needed, tiguan has more room. Driving up through high elevations and mountains? Tiguans turbo 4 is fantastic without having to rev the hell out it. With that being said, the Mazda is hands down the more engaging, comfortable, and fun to drive in daily traffic. Visibility is excellent and it really does make daily driving it fun and engaging. The vw doesn't do anything wrong per se, but its very forgettable with not standing out in any way. In conclusion both have been excellent vehicles and would recommend either or
I test drove a 2020 Tiguan R line, vs a 2019 Mazda CX5 Grand Touring Reserve, they were almost exactly the same cost. I went with the Mazda. VW used to feel like you were in a discount Audi. That is not the case anymore. I think what was missed in this review of the cabin noise of the Tiguan is the engine noise. While yes the outside and wind noise are minimal, that completely underpowered engine is LOUD. Not to mention it does NOT feel like 184hp is enough, its a very slow vehicle. For what you get with the Mazda and price vs the tiguan, its a no brainer. I had a 2013 tiguan and instead of sticking with VW I jumped ship and got the BETTER vehicle, the CX5
I wanted to buy the Mazda CX5 but i´ve chosen the VW Tiguan instead. Mainly because of the Virtual Cockpit, the much better Navigation\Infotainment System, DSG 7 gear Automatic, the big Panorama roof, the sexy R-Line interior and exterieur and the LED Lights ALS. The only missing is the Head Up Display.
I couldn’t own a car as slow as the Tiguan. It’s actually impressive they were able to muster both below average power/MPG in the same engine. German Engineering!!

The way Mazda sticks the screen in is just hideous. And all the plastic around the wheel wells looks cheap. Everything else is top notch. Drove the old cx5 from AZ to CO, it was fun. VW interior is the best in any segment, DSG is great, Vw a bit more rugged, cx5 great for city and highways

Have you had any maintenance issues with the Tiguan? I’m looking at the 2021 Jeep Cherokee, 2021 Mazda CX-5, and 2022 Tiguan SE R-line black. Loved the interior of the Tiguan but reviews are so bad I’m not sure which to go with.

I have a 2021 CX-5 now that my wife drives mostly. It has things that are better than VW and there are things about the Tiguan that are absolutely better. I’d both again over and over and I’ve driven everything: but I like to always stay under $40,000. Both offer good value for far less than that! Let me know what else you want to know. I have not ever and don’t plan to buy anything from Chrysler or now Stellantis. I’m in the car business, my family is, and the Jeep products have so many little things that go wrong often and big things that go wrong later: car business people always talk negatively about Jeep / Chrysler behind closed doors. It’s always been an open secret which is why most people are in negative equity situations in the Jeep products. The resale is historically low. Of course now we live in uncertain times, but outside of this pandemic pricing due to supply & demand, residuals are low.
Just tested both..... this really isn’t even close. The Tiguan is simply the superior choice. In the CX-5, you can feel the body roll and strain around modest 35mph curves, while the Tiguan is virtually unfazed.... it feels like a Porsche. The Tiguan also has far better fit-n-finish. Both great little SUV’s but the Tiguan is the clear winner here.
I currently own a 2019 Tiquan and previously owned the first version whose year I cant remember. I do remember how sporty it was. very much like GTI. I didn't keep it because it had minimal room. The current Tiquan is near perfect size-wise and much more practical. I miss the tightness the previous one had. Otherwise I prefer the improved version. The Mazda seems very much like the original Tiquan which was a sales failure for VW. Hopefully the Mazda does better in this regard.
Good points. I also owned a precious Tiguan, a 2012, which I enjoyed and now I own a 2019. You are correct about the Tiguan having more space inside for all of my junk!
VW has definitely made the Tiguan bigger over the years to appease the US market. CX-5 sales are through the roof and will continue. From style to performance can't beat them in this price point.
Tiguan R-Line trim wins for looks. Also the Apple CarPlay and display are far better than the CX-5. I like the design of the new cx-5 but it does also feel somewhat over-styled and cheap in several areas.
"PRACTICAL"? VW? Well only if it had the high quality of the MAZDA. I've talked to too many VW owners, including my oldest daughter & her VW Tiguan SUV, about the lack of reliability. Yeah VW is "nicely tuned" but that doesn't last by 30,000 miles. I'll put my 2019 MAZDA CX 5 GT Reserve against a Tiguan any day for handling, design, features, power and RELIABILITY.
Why didn't you compare the Mazda CX grand touring with the smaller engine that is more on par with the Tiguan? Of course the 250HP one is going to be better to drive. Also several more thousand to own. The price to buy a Tiguan SEL vs a CX5 GT is comparable. And I'm not talking MSRP, I'm talking actual selling price.
The CX-5 is a quiet, refined drive. That being said the front seat bottoms don’t offer any thigh support, the arm rest is too far back, the dead pedal is too far forward and the steering wheel doesn’t pull out far enough. In addition the A pillar is too thick and it’s hard to see around. If you are 6ft tall or above, don’t buy this car. The driving position is flawed.
Oh wow I just test drive one of these Wednesday and didn’t identify any of those problems. I own a 2019 Tiguan and the Mazda arm rest was better positioned for me. I want to add a CX-5 to my garage
I’ll make this review short, Mazda if you want reliability and good resale value. VW if you want a piece of crap car with horrible problems and poor resale. Seriously, I work at a dealership and every time we get a VW they are all terrible, between constant oil leaks and bad turbos it’s just not worth it.
I cannot believe no one has mentioned that the Tiguan has a touchscreen infotainment screen and CX-5 does not have a touchscreen unless you are going under 5 miles an hour. Seriously Mazda.

The CX-5 is also available in a diesel model, is the Tiguan ? Too soon ?
TDI is not coming back.
Not in the United States
I have 2019 CX5 diesel . This new turbo looks great too 200 plus HP
In the US? Mazda diesel???
I love Mazda over VW
you are not smart
I enjoyed your review. Thank you!!
Heather thanks for the comment Heather!
Love the Tiguan but the biggest and really only obstacle is the cost $$$ of maintenence. Did that come into play with your decision?
The Mazda will retain quality longer than the problematic vw any day
Getting my 2 CX-5’s next week!..
Thank you
soul good woah nice!
lol double trouble
I currently own a 2019 Tiquan and previously owned the first version whose year I cant remember. I do remember how sporty it was. very much like GTI. I didn't keep it because it had minimal room. The current Tiquan is near perfect size-wise and much more practical. I miss the tightness the previous one had. Otherwise I prefer the improved version. The Mazda seems very much like the original Tiquan which was a sales failure for VW. Hopefully the Mazda does better in this regard.
Gerhard Jinks good insight!
Tiquan sporty.... stop it
Good points.
Cx5 wins
Hell nah
Tiguan R-Line trim wins for looks. Also the Apple CarPlay and display are far better than the CX-5. I like the design of the new cx-5 but it does also feel somewhat over-styled and cheap in several areas.
Very helpful review, thank you.
Glad it was useful!
Reliability settled it for me.
On which car?,; just curious
Price?
The CX-5 you are driving is not the Signature because it doesn't have the black roof liner!
Capistrano Mazda I drove 2 Mazda’s for this video. The broll was the signature and the drive was the gt
The Mazda CX-5 makes the VW look like the ugly stepsister.
Mazda CX-5 is the more reliable car.
Tiguan made the top ten worst vehicles list. Do I need to go on?
100% "Made in Mexico" vs. 100% "Made in Japan". No comparison.
Where was that! I’ve never had troubles and I’m on my 2nd one
Go away you theif
I’ll make this review short, Mazda if you want reliability and good resale value. VW if you want a piece of crap car with horrible problems and poor resale. Seriously, I work at a dealership and every time we get a VW they are all terrible, between constant oil leaks and bad turbos it’s just not worth it.
mazda's reliability isn't much different and both cabin space and boot space are tight.
@@cooljool1 Volkswagen is about as reliable as a Yugo. German engineering is way overrated in this case.
I’m on my 3rd VW. No problems so far
Whats up with the video quality of this video? A modern iPhone would have better video quality.
Too much noise on your vidéo i can't hear you clearly
Are my more recent videos any better?
I don’t remember what gear I used for this video
@@dwnshft ya it's okey for the new ones
I cannot believe no one has mentioned that the Tiguan has a touchscreen infotainment screen and CX-5 does not have a touchscreen unless you are going under 5 miles an hour. Seriously Mazda.
😴
