I LOVE driving my cx5. I was in line to buy a Jeep Compass when I decided to test drive one last car. And I’m so glad I didn’t get the Jeep. My CX5 feels like a class above it.
Good thing about this cars is the fact is made in japan with 100 japanese materials and 100 labor which means there is discipline and a strict quality control, no sloppiness when assembling evey part of it. Worth to buy as well as the new camry with is also 100.made and sourced in japan.
You guys got also hosed with the Start Stop system, in Latinoamerica we do have the system enabled in our cars, all assembled in Hiroshima, Japan. While a bit jerky in its operation it does save some fuel and gives you a whisper quiet cabin in red lights.
Lin Hunnicutt the cx-5 would be so awesome with that engine option! but the fact that a turbo diesel is coming makes sense to not bring that engine into production.
He is wrong about the older CX-5's. You do not have to turn the radio up to max in order to hear it while traveling at higher speeds. I would know this because I drive a 2014 CX-5.
Kimberly Adams the lexus nx has 235 hp, 4 year 50k miles warranty, better value and resale. Plus you get that Lexus name. It's more expensive of course. There's a 2018 coming out this fall. Check it out.
I would hold off. Unfortunately the NX is built on the top of a very ancient platform. The chassis for the NX was already out in the wild on the RAV4 when the chassis of the previous CX-5 was still only data on a computer. The previous model CX-5 was cleansheet everything, which is why not much has changed with this model. So you're looking at parts that were first designed 7 years ago. Drive both. They're made for different markets and difference reasons. The NX is a luxury car, and the interiors are very high tech. But pull back the cover, and you're driving a higher spec 2008 RAV4. As per a comment above, I've been to both factories. The NX is manufactured only a short drive from where I type this in Fukuoka prefecture, Japan. Factory is awesome, Some quality work. But drive both back to back, and the Mazda should win easily. The suspension and engines are significantly more advanced in the Mazda. The transmission however simple it sounds on paper performs far more sweetly. It will rev match on downshifts. The six speed on the 200T is the pick of the bunch. It states that it is intelligent with their ECT transmission, but I personally think the Mazda is better. Haven't driven the 300, but a CVT - really?? Lexus has a great cabin normally, but take a look around and you'll see one area Mazda is no excelling in - consistency. Lexus has different print in the middle display, compared with the screen, compared with the speedo. It's as is many companies many the parts and different share notes. It's very Toyota in this manner. They always do this and should stop it! Would someone stop making digital clocks from a Casio fit into a dash!!!
Depends on your priority...if you are after practicality then CX5 as it does everything the NX does but at a lot cheaper price. If you want the luxury image and feeling then go with the NX. From my experience having owned both a luxury and a mainstream brand vehicle, you can't beat being more frugal and practical. I owned a Volvo XC60 previously and almost replaced it with an NX but realized afterwards that it wasn't an upgrade as they both did pretty much the same in terms of features, luxuriousness and performance, etc. Maybe with Lexus a bit more reliable than the volvo...I also looked at RX while a nice CUV was expensive though. So ended up with a Mazda CX9 as I went back to being a bit more practical...cheaper than Lexus by a lot but didn't lose the features and luxuriousness (Signature trim).
Just drove one while my CX5 was being serviced. Nice with all the bells and whistles for $34,000 but after my CX5's almost got me killed because of a programming problem where the vehicle wouldn't accelerate when the temperature was below freezing.I was passing a semi up a slight grade and the vehicle just stopped accelerating forcing me to to cut across the oncoming lane and onto the shoulder to keep from hitting a Dodge Ram head on. A month after that happen I got a recall notice.Yeah I know that could happen to any vehicle but in 50 years of driving it never happen to me.Think I'll check out the new GMC Acadia with a V6 next,
Toyota's are fine I've owned quite a few but they don't make anything I want. Never owned a Honda but they always seem to have transmission problems specially in their vans and Pilot. I don't know what I'll own next but it will definitely have a V6 engine while they still make them.Absolutely no interest in a turbo 4
This is a drive-by-wire accelerator issue and it's rare. That tech didn't exist even 20 years ago, so it wouldn't have happened in the last 50. By the way, the Acadia is made in China.
It's 2017 and Honda can't make or source a reliable transmission. Never owned one never will. I thinking about waiting to buy the new Ford expedition. A little big but WTF the world is going to end soon
Should I spend the extra few thousands to get the cx5 over the mazda 3? Only thing is that the 3 is better to drive and the 3 is more aftermarket friendly vs the cx5
I wondered what the reviewers take is on the Kia Sportage SX? I was thoroughly impressed with the handling and torque vectoring axles. In my opinion is much better drive than the new, slower CX5.
I own a previous generation CX-5 and while I accept it might be noisier than a Honda CR-V it is very similar to the Toyota RAV4. When you said you had to turn up the volume to the max at highway speed because of the noise I hope you were exaggerating. It is noisy but not that noisy, you make it sound like it is unbearable. My previous cars (2014 Toyota Yaris) were worse. If you complain about that don't even bother driving a Kia Sportage or a Hyundai Tucson, both same segment and much, much louder.
Does the driver's right side handrest slide forward like those in CRV or the Escape? I'm not too tall, and as you can notice in this video from 5:01 to 7:20, the driver's right hand will hang in the air in the normal driving position.
I don't see how this is The Benchmark for this class considering the fact that the sunroof is not automatic in order to open the sunroof you have to hold the button while other competitors come with automatic sunroof and offer panoramic sunroof while this still does not.
It is automatic, not sure why he held it. All windows are also one touch in the CX-5 while I know many other Asian brands do not offer that. They are lacking a panoramic roof however and I think start-stop is good technology to have.
Look for Auto Bild 100,000km tear down test. Unfortunately video is all in German. However to sum it up, the previous CX-5 had it not been for a slight firmware change that was required for diesel vehicles back in 2012, would have joined their list of 7 faultless vehicles in the past 15 years. Auto Bild in Germany has arguably the harshest test. It takes well over a year to complete, so don't expect to see an Auto Bild test for this model yet. However the previous model was considered by the Germans to be the most reliable SUV on the market with no rival.
For record Mazda has the highest proportion of Japanese made to foreign made of any Japanese brand. The new Mexican and Russian plants were built to support growing markets. The CX-5 is made in Hiroshima Japan (it always was). They have started a new line up in Hiroshima and will also start a line up in Gifu (which is a short Shinkansen trip from Hiroshima). However for the US, they are expected to start producing models in Mexico. It's a new plant so hopefully can replicate what they're doing in Hiroshima. The Hiroshima plant is amazing to watch. I've been there twice and heading there again in a couple of weeks to see the new CX-5 in production. I've also seen the Lexus plant near Fukuoka as well (produces the LX, NX and Furai). Both awesome to watch.
When are you guys that test drive and give your opinions on the CX5 are going to start complaining that it does not have a panoramic sunroof it's 2017 cmon man also on the Mazda 6 it's been 4 years that I've been wanting to buy one of these cars hoping the next model will finally have a panoramic sunroof
Eddie Delgado hyundai actually got rid of the panoramic roof on the sonata .... but I still want one. My pop's murano panoramic roof is wonderful. But then again, i want ventilated seats too.... So maybe I need to look elsewhere
You summed it up by saying, it is the one you WANT to buy...the CRV is a mom mobile, the Rav4 is living on it's reliability record, but boring... Did you film this in Detroit?
I love your reviews, but the camera behind the front wheel view when you are taking it out of the garage is somewhat disorienting for me. Of course I get motion sick very easily and cannot play first person shooters because of that so maybe it's just me.
I am 6' 3", about 280 lbs. I stopped at a Mazda dealer and sat in a cx 5 and a cx 9. Too cramped by center storage and over all to small. The Ford Edge and Hyundai Santa fe were much roomier.
In short. It's an expensive good looking lame duck petrol guzzler. Good for mums shopping but not so good for long drives with family or friends travelling on mountain roads. You said: As much as I always liked to get behind the wheel of the CX 5 it always drove You crazy how loud and uncomfortable it was ......!? Could You explain that to us?
