It’s bizarre that a guy in Canada can cut the head off of a stranger on a bus, eat part of the guy and find himself out of prison in a few years while a little wimpy guy who horribly sucker punched his mother taking her life and threaten to take the life of Justin Trudeau, and while most of us agree Trudo needs to be taken out of office there are legal ways, may end up spending more time rehabilitating then the guy who cut someone’s head off and ate part of him.
Canada has the dumbest justice system in the world outside of countries that have no justice system.

Not defending him neither. But depression, anxiety, any mental illness for that matter shouldn’t be taken lightly. He clearly had something wrong. No matter if you have personal experience or not. Just like someone else mentioned, it isn’t the same just because you have it as well. Regardless, anxiety and depression can and do lead to these, I can justify this by myself. I battle with grim and rather grueling thoughts. Would I act on them. I don’t believe so, and that I have enough mortality and self-control to not do anything. But trust me, it’s not to be taken light of. If you do you’ll only be kindling the flames friend.

It makes me feel safer or maybe luckier in a way?
Ive been disconnected from some aspects of life because Ive had some serious health complications so I am possibly a bit numb to some things so my situation is a bit different.
But Ive had decreased curiousity with finding stuff like that with a new depression medication change, and (ironically) regular but more mild use of cannabis/THC for chronic pain.

That can possibly be percieved that way.
It *is* a common sentiment held by mainstream media; generalizing people with morbid curiousities, while showcasing the worst of the worst when cases like this happen.
Not a 1:1 comparison, but the way it is, is reminicent of the “violent video games will [inherently] make kids violent!!” mindset.
The fact that you can be a “true crime fan”/be morbidly fascinated by all aspects of true crime, and it’s totally accepted by society is so strange.

Intense self hatred, long term deep clinical depression, drug addiction, and guilt and shame for ruining my life because of it....and yet never thought of hurting anyone other than me. I know it's a selfish act to take ones life instead of doing the very hard work of living and changing everything to make yourself feel better but I also convinced myself I'd do less damage in everyone's life if I was gone. I convinced myself it was for others. I can't imagine for a second ever wanting anyone to feel the pain I felt. I've gotten a lot of help and continually work to better myself. Watching gore videos, while suffering with mental illness and drug dependency, is a sign someone is possibly about to act out with violence. To approach gore in a healthy manner, viewing it simply by anatomy or to stay informed about certain aspects of reality, is far different. I don't watch gore videos because I have mental health problems and I know it would agitate those problems
It was his choice to seek out that material and smoke weed. But I'm glad to hear he's recovering from the circumstances that lead him to killing his mother. May she rest in peace and may her daughter find peace while alive still

I guess I'll also say blaming part of this on weed is silly. Weed doesn't lead to noticeable changes in aggression unless it's hereditary to my knowledge. Weed can trigger certain mental illnesses, true, like schizophrenia... but it's not typical

Yes let's put the guy who murdered his mom for no reason in a nice comfortable prison cell all by himself for a few years so he isn't broken by the time the parole board comes around and is inevitably released because he found God in jail, took a couple classes, was a model prisoner, and is really really sorry for what he did.

clearly this kid had more than depression. There is some psychopathy in there somewhere. Such a sad story. I am so thankful he didn't hurt any more families. They say young peoples brains arent fully formed until the age of 22. So they don't fully understand the consequences of their actions. I have no idea how true this is, but there seems to be some truth in it at the very least. I think after he killed his mom, her death hit him afterwards, he had an idea of what loss was, but ironically, after he killed her ,he found out what real loss was like. Perhaps that is why he changed his mind.? I don't know but I am so sorry for his family, and even for him for throwing his life away. Prayers to his sister for healing and recovery!

I have seen him apparently on " Supernatural " since I watched and own the series.
But he does not come to mind.
Depression does not make a person outwardly aggressive. Neither does smoking weed.
So he has other underlying issues.
He has a grasp upon right and wrong but too late for his mother.
I imagine with a clear mind and constant treatment he may be able to re enter society down the road. He has several years to grow and put his actions into perspective.

There is a link between cannabis - especially when used heavily from an early age - and mental illness, particularly psychosis/schizophrenia. And alcohol can be a major factor in violent attacks/behavior. It does not justify nor is it the sole cause of his terrible crime, but it helps to paint a picture of all the factors that could worsen his mental state.

It's a life sentence with the possibility of getting out, there's no guarantee of him ever getting out of prison. The amount of time before eligibility means that he can't apply for parole until after that time. There are many convicts in Canada who have been behind bars for decades, and are never seeing the light of day again, they simply get their parole applications denied basically automatically.
