  • Have you ever seen a butternut tree? They're not very common in southern Illinois, but Shawnee Community College Biology Instructor Tony Gerard found one this week! He shares a bit of this tree's history and why it's so rare in our region.

That’s a black walnut. Notice the darker, more sharply ridged bark and round fruits.
Butternut trees have grey bark with flattened ridges, football shaped sticky fruits and the leaves look a little different compared to black walnut.

Sad to see so called “professionals” and “academics” in the industry further instilling confusion by spreading false information.

Sorry to disappoint. I’m a botanist and that is a black walnut Juglans nigra. . The white walnut, Juglans cinerea has gray bark and egg-shaped, sticky fruits. You’re right about some things, though. The nuts are delicious. Count yourself privileged if you have tasted them lately. The disease has made this tree quite uncommon to endangered throughout its range. They prefer moist soils so seek them out on bottomlands and near streams or swamps. Good luck.

Appreciate you drawing attention to propagation of Butternut Trees. And maybe there is a Butternut tree at this man's home. But that nut you showed is not a Butternut. I have an abundance of Butternut from three large Butternut trees, if you'd like to propogate.

Yeah, that is not a butternut tree. That is a black walnut tree with slightly elongated nuts. Butternuts are sticky and fuzzy.

I collected some this year and am inclined to agree it looks like black walnut. also the leaves are not perfectly opposite as the would be for a butternut so it might be black walnut or it might be some hybrid. Black walnut they are a little offset from each other which it looks like in the closeup.

The nut is not as round as a black walnut. Similar for sure.
