- Today we go in search of the elusive white walnut (Juglans cinerea). Many of you may know it by its other common name - the butternut. Sadly, being able to find large, mature specimens of this wonderful tree is getting harder and harder. Watch and find out why...

I was trying to identify these trees in my backyard. They had these sticky fruit like things and cool feather-like leaves. After finding out they were butternut trees, I did some research and found your video. I am shocked to find out that they are kinda rare. Thanks for the info!
Found one fallen down in a creek in Missouri.
I didn't understand it, knew it was a walnut but even my brother, a biologist, didn't know what it was.
There is a state park near me with at least two white walnut trees. I had to google football shaped sticky walnuts to figure out what it was!
I live in southern Ontario on 50 acres. Back in the 90's there were 100's of butternut trees.. I am now down to 4 that are still alive and trying to hang on. The cankers are healing up and the leaf crown is inproving but alas no fruit yet.
I have a white walnut (aka: butternut) in my yard that makes that makes that one look tiny. It is the largest in the state of Ohio, with a circumference of 19 feet and 2 inches at chest height.
How is it holding up?
6 feet across? holy cow. I barely see any trees that size around here let alone the elusive butternut.
That’s freakin’ awesome, man! How is it doin’?
Do you harvest the white walnut fruit?
I have a rather large one growing in my front yard we have been there since the early 80s and it was there . I’m in east Tennessee
I remember as a kid growing up in New Jersey, there was a small one that produced sticky nuts. I knew it as Butternut. This was in the 1950s and one by one the elm trees succumbed to Dutch Elm disease, they were beautiful. The American Chestnuts were already long gone. Today I live in Northern Ca. and have disease free American Chestnuts from an Oregon population. They are just a few years old with the largest at about 15'. I think it grew 4' or 5' this year. They were referred to as the Redwoods of the East Coast. My hope is they will bear before Sudden Oak Death reaches my area. I know there is some work being done to gene splice disease resistance into Castanea dentata, as back crossing with hybrids has taken decades, is there any efforts to splice disease immunity into Juglans cinerea or other species to save them? Great video. Thanks!
Black walnut trees
-dying of black line disease, in coastal Ca.
Everything’s dying or burned.
In silence.
Our food sources destroyed without comment.
We live on a large farm in South central PA and years ago my grandpa showed me two butternut. Well sadly, one was broken to death during bad storm this year and it was the parent tree. The second one is alot smaller. I'm collecting nuts to try to start seedlings and keep it going.
Your grandfather would be very proud. I hope you have great luck.
I have a massive butternut tree in fact the tree is actually a conjoined twins of sorts. One of the tree were already pretty massive but the other made it Half the size of my yard and taller then my house, I feel bad though because the tree is so big it branches runs onto my neighbors property and drops leaves, branches, and nuts onto the garden XD
Luckily I live in an area where I have no problem with the fungus like tree blight
I’m also thinking of planting more on my property
I think I have a large one in my back yard in Kincardine Ontario. Seems healthy enough. I hope it doesn't catch the fungus.
Hey Matt, I love white walnuts too and know where to find more. A place you know well,
How exciting!
I was surprised to find out they are rare. I have several mature trees in my backyard in PA. I have been fighting a losing battle with the squirrels for years.
I bought my 4 acre homestead in Nov 2019 and it has one huge one and at least a dozen others on the property.
Reminds me of an Ent
I know where there are hundreds of butter nut trees in various stages of growth. What can I do to help? I know there are at least 30-50 mature trees. And there is a lot of puff ball mushrooms. I am located in New Brunswick Canada.
Leave the trees alone to grow and Plant the nuts. If you need too UA-cam how to germinate them and either give them away or sale them after a year or two. That’s the best thing that can be done to hopefully protect butternut trees.
hey man great video i have a real good sized one in my yard in r.i, been looking for good ways to process them.
It is getting very difficult to obtain butternut tree nuts for cultivation.
Hey just wanted to say I love watching your videos. I'm doing a masters in botany and one of our assignments is to make UA-cam video. I'm drawing a lot of inspiration! Any tips?
Explore a topic you find fascinating! Makes it a heck of a lot easier to talk about on the spot haha.
Why am I watching this in 4am?
Just found this tree today
I have like 6 or 7 butternuts in my yard
So I just planted a McIntosh apple tree just a stones throw away from my butternut. Now I don’t know if it’s going to live.
I was hoping my butternut was a hickory tree but I remember the nuts are more oblong shaped instead of round so I’m sure it’s butternut.
I don’t know if the nuts are sticky, the squirrels run off with them and I’ve never picked them up by hand.
I just planted a bunch of crabapple trees this year.
Shit just got real.
I wonder if there are any in my neck of the woods!
Okay, I’ve found what I thought was a pecan tree on my property, now I have doubts. How can I tell the difference?
I just had one pop up in my front yard two years ago. At first I thought it was a black walnut since those are popping up everywhere. But the leaves aren't near as big, grows slow as hell, and is more lime green than the dark green of the black walnut. Also has smaller leaves and the lead leaflet is tiny compared to a black walnut. It's only 2 ft tall and it's struggling. Any tips?
In the winter the most obvious difference between white and black walnuts is the bud. The white walnut buds are much longer than the black walnut buds. You are right they are slower to grow than the black walnut trees. I've been propagating them for 40 years on my property and the only tips I can give is treat it well and when it bears seeds be sure they are planted and spread. The more there are the greater the chance that they will survive.
Holy wild ginger!

I preferred your hair when it was gelled. It looked better. I love your Channel Logo, and the ‘acting’ and editing of your videos is great. I feel sad about this invasive fungus affecting the tree. :(. #nativetrees #easternnorthamerica #invasivefungus #fungus #trees #endangeredspecies
@4:06 "The tree dies a slow painful death" Ha, guess vegans gotta eat air now.
How dumb! Trees have no nerves to feel pain or my chainsaw...I'll buy your butternut tree...call us at 503 WAL-NUTS
Good information, but the constant buzzing noise in the background is an annoying distraction that had me gritting my teeth. Worse than a drill.

I have 2 in my yard and will decrease the world population by 2.
