- The Butternut aka White Walnut is a fall favorite. Couple things 1) wear old cloths cause they will stain. I think its iodine that's in the husk just like the Black Walnut. Dyes can be made from them but I know nothing about that. 2) Both the Black and White Walnut husks contain juglone which inhibits plant growth....good for the trees survival but bad for your lawn so husk them in an area where that won't be an issue. 3) They will stay good in an undamaged shell for a while or shelled and frozen. And roast them too with a little salt. 4) LEAVE SOME NUTS UNDER THE TREE FOR THE SQUIRRELS TO DISPERSE. The Butternut is somewhat endangered depending where you are so leave a few.
You’re lucky to have those my last one that I used to harvest from got taken down about three years ago. those sure crack out a lot nicer than black walnuts do
What about not cleaning the husks at all, just planting them whole as they are when gathered from under the tree?
Glad to hear they may be making a recovery in some places. Here in NJ they are near extinct I think as I haven't seen a single one for 5 years of looking amongst the gazillions of Black Walnut we have.
Gosh, pecans are so much easier, but yeah, I know they don't grow anywhere near that far north. Glad to hear the butternut species is recovering from blight.
Lots of Black Walnuts here in Pa, never seen a White Walnut, but I'll ask around. Thanks for Sharing
I would like to grow the butternut from seeds, can you help me in receiving seeds ?
These are my favorite tree😍😍😍....i only came accross a few and recently in 2020 i was driving mt old jeep...then i saw one in full bloom...and picked some fruits off it haha😂😂
How is the husks Dye is it good like a black walnut Dye?
Would a nutcracker work instead of a vice?
Beautiful butternut :) looks tasty :) thanks
Many years ago I purchased an electric cement mixer from Harbor Freight(very inexpensive). I used it to remove the husks from black walnuts - it worked great. I am going to try it on Butternuts.
They're delicious
I'm wondering if a bucket with some water and rocks or abrasive stones would work.
I have one in my hand now... haven't cleaned or cracked it... what nut does it taste like
