  • We are lucky enough to have a Butternut Tree in our yard, also know as a White Walnut. Some years we get a good harvest and some years we do not. This year is a good year so we are going to show you how we harvest the nuts. We are trying a new way to de-husk the nuts this year which seemed to work well but was a lot of work. Still worth it. Thanks for watching. If you want to see how we crack open the butternuts you can watch that video here: • How to Crack Butternut...

Put some tarps on the ground before shaking the limbs. It will help with the gathering of the nuts

We let ours get half brown then clean them . no sure what is best. Then Dry , and split the nuts in a vice , Squeeze the ends . We just had to remove our tree , Was getting very old and rotted . The stump measures 72 inches across in one direction and 48 inches in the other direction. I did timelapse the removal. Was a sad day .

You can grow another tree with the whole nut although I have not tried it yet myself.

That slurry that comes off the nuts after the agitating step looks like it would do well to be added to your compost pile.

@@trentvoc4229 Thanks for watching. My reading on Butternuts from multiple sources discovered that there is a toxin in the leaves, bark, fruit hulls, and roots that inhibit growth of certain plants. See link below.

We were afraid to compost it in fears of harming our garden.

@@sunnysideupfarmct Ohhh, right. I didn't even think about that. It's a lignan tree. But then isn't that the point of composting, I mean composting is about burning what goes into it. idk, I was really thinking bout that slurry's potential for drawing red wigglers out of the soil and into the heap. They are the gold nuggets in a c'post pile.
