  • Hello All!
The RMS Olympic was a massive Olympic class liner and older sister of the infamous Titanic. She was crown jewel of the White Star Line and served an incredibly important role in history, even if she has (unfortunately) been forgotten by history today.

Titanic sank in 1912, and only about 700 or so people survived that, and out of those, a few lived until the late 2000s. Olympic over the course of her career transported about half a million passengers, and was in transatlantic passenger service until 1935, 23 years later than Titanic's sinking. Bearing these facts in mind, it's likely that there are possibly a few hundred people alive today in 2021, who sailed on Olympic. Hopefully none of them died of fucking COVID...

That would have been wonderful. A lot of the great liners of the 1910-1920 era were scrapped during the Depression. I think that if they'd known that another world war was only a few years off, the ships might've been spared (i.e. become a "mothball fleet") for war service. They may have been past their prime as liners, but they still had great carrying capacity as troop ships and could all manage well over 20 knots.

    • @markrl75
      @markrl75 3 роки тому +5

@@TorontoJediMaster - That is very true. A lot of those liners where not practical to retain due to failing high pressure steam equipment and boilers. Superheated steam leaks are definitely not fun and extremely dangerous. Overhauling boiler equipment would have been very expensive. HMS Bulwark was sent to the breakers in 1981 (just before the Falklands war where she would have been very useful) for that very reason. The plan had been to retain her until the Invincible class were fully operational but a serious steam leak put paid to that. This was a big problem on other WW2 era RN aircraft carriers coming to the end of their operational life in the 1970's.

My grandfather came over on the Olympic sometime around 1927 when he was just one year old. As the story goes my great parents smuggled him over in an instrument case. He always liked the Titanic more but obviously family connections to the Olympic are significant & without that historic ship I probably wouldn’t even exist. I definitely am not letting it’s history getting forgotten. When titanic or other famous ships are mentioned I often bring up the Olympic, the massive passenger liner that successfully served in World War I, sinking U-boats, having amazing camouflage which in itself is interesting history & surviving long enough to retire.

RMS Olympic is the older sister-ship of the Titanic and at the time was one of the largest transatlantic liners in the world. Olympic was actually on the return trip to England that night when Titanic sank and steamed towards the scene. When Carpathia was offered by Olympic to take on Titanic survivors, the captain refused since Olympic may cause a panic among the survivors.
On October 27, 1914, Olympic was on the sixth day of her voyage when she intercepted a distress signal from a stricken British Battleship, Audacious which struck a mine and was taking on water. She arrived at the scene, assisted in rescuing the crew and attempted to tow the battleship to shallow waters. But the towing was to no avail and Audacious went under.
During the war, Olympic departed Halifax on December 1, 1917, five days later - The Halifax Explosion happened. Olympic was lucky to have been at sea because if she were in port at the time, she would’ve been a total loss.
Olympic was a great ship, but are there any documentaries on the Olympic?

Slight error. It was the B-deck promenade that was eliminated on the Titanic and replaced with staterooms, an enlarged a la carte restaurant, and Cafe Parisien. The A-deck promenade remained the same on both ships, but it was partially enclosed on Titanic to make up for the loss of an enclosed promenade area for First Class passengers on B-deck.

The *OLYMPIC* needs much more recognition than she got. To date, there's never been a movie about her while *TITANIC* had many movies about her (most popularly, the 1997 James Cameron film), and even *BRITTANIC* had, at least, one movie about her (if not more).
Also, it was a very ill-fated move to scrap her. Today, she could have been a museum or a cruise ship if she had been saved instead of being scrapped. Just imagine the crowds of people who could have seen a living legacy of the famous Olympic-class ocean liners from the early 20th Century. Now, that would have been a sight to behold.

I have read all I can about the Olympic and you're right, it is a huge pity that, today, this grand and, generally, successful liner - come troop ship - is virtually forgotten or not known about at all. By the tragic virtue of both her sisters being no more, the new Cunard/White Star company could have afforded to lay the ship up as a tribute to her lost sisters if not as a museum, as maritime museums were not in vogue back then. As a troop ship, although not as fast as Cunard's vessels, she could still outrun U-Boats and, therefore, saved thousands of soldiers' lives; then bringing home survivors at war's end. For this service alone the UK government, that had requisitioned her, should have purchased her to be saved for posterity.
We will never see their like again and that's what makes saving and refurbishing the Queen Mary (1) so vital. For if the Queen Mary is ever scrapped then, like her earlier sisters, she'll only live on film and in the memories of all the lives she's touched. Thank you for these important videos. Cheers and plain sailing. BH

I still, just dont get the fanaticism, the weird interest in Titanic. It's in essence, a grave, a cemetery, a crypt to the dead. What about the other lovely, beautiful ships that sank...The Lucitania, etc. et al, what is it about the Titanic....is it because of romanticized movies??? Sorry, but just can't figure it out. It's creepy, too.

    • @shayhicks7682
      @shayhicks7682 2 роки тому +3

@@judydenver5362 the thing about titanic is that it was an ironic tragedy. To start it’s the most catastrophic maritime disaster during peacetime. Lusitania sank in wartime. Titanic sank because of a tragic fluke never seen before or since. No ship has sank from an iceberg except the titanic. Next is the poetic nature of the tragedy. A ship that is the largest of its time, and has been deemed unsinkable by the press hitting an iceberg and sinking is ironic and tragic enough, but that this happened on its maiden voyage is just unbelievable. And I think the last part of the fascination of it is that this is something that could have been avoided in terms of the human loss of life. The accomplishment of building a ship like titanic at that time is a great one, but human arrogance got involved. They purposely didn’t put enough lifeboats on board because they never imagined an event like this as possible. It took titanic almost 3 hours to sink from the moment they hit the iceberg. The list was never extreme enough that lifeboats couldn’t have been launched. They could have gotten most if not all souls on board off the ship if they had enough lifeboats. The fact that there was a ship on the horizon that didn’t help also adds to the tragedy. It’s important to remember an event like this to remember humans are fallible and to then create redundancy in safety so it doesn’t happen again. You add all that up and you have a fascinating story and event.

@@shayhicks7682 I see. I hadn't thought of ALL those things, quite like that. I do know, that of all, the ships in the area, the Titanic was found to be excessively speeding, through the ice flows, (I know, the ice was everywhere, like floating white parches, for miles, according to the survivors, and not like just on 'Berg" shown in most movie and video accounts; and have yet to look into why Isnay, his "possible" order to the Captain, had been given, to speed through, etc., etc., so many things. I really think there should be a movie focusing on the ships that were around the Titanic when she was sinking. The Olympic was one of the ships that picked her distress call and made massive efforts to try to dash to her sister’s rescue, but since she was about 505 miles away, she was unable to get there in time. She only made it as close as about 110 miles when she informed by the Carpathia that she had finished picking up the Titanic’s survivors and thus continuing her journey to the Titanic’s sinking location would gain them nothing. The Olympic’s crew still offered to carry the survivors since the Olympic was bigger than the Carpathia, but the Bruce Ismay and the Carpathia’s crew declined because they were afraid that a ship looking near-identical to the Titanic would give the survivors greater anxiety. From there, the Olympic resumed her voyage to Southampton, picked up more lifeboats on her way there, and had all of her parties and concerts cancelled out of respect for her sunken sister and the many people who lost their lives in her disaster.

8:29 - 8:43 contains misleading information. The staterooms on Titanic were added in place of the B deck promenade, not the A deck promenade. The A deck promenade was used along its entire length, but the B deck promenade wasn't much used. So that's where they put in the staterooms, cafe Parisien etc. The difference to the A deck promenade was that the forward third of Titanic's was glassed in. This was because of experience with Olympic, where it was found that in heavy seas, spray from waves crashing over the bow could reach the forward end of the A deck promenade, soaking the wealthy 1st class pax. This is actually the primary way that Olympic and Titanic can be told apart at a glance - the forward 1/3 of Titanic's A deck promenade is glassed, whereas Olympic's A deck promenade is open along its entire length. As for B deck... that promenade was glassed in from the beginning on Olympic. During her 1913 refit, the B deck promenade was deleted, staterooms and a cafe Parisien being added, bringing her up to Titanic's spec. For whatever reason though, they never glassed in the forward end of her A deck promenade, and it remained open throughout her entire career. Making for an easy way to tell the ships apart, as noted above.

It would be easy to check.
They made pretty good arguments in several documentaries and the things they said can be verified.
Did the captain of the Titanic crash his previous ship?
Why did they say he had a exemplary record?
Why was it 12 from its reported position?
Was the Titanic engraved with the name or plates originally?
Out of all the bodies found and no they didn't get all of them but the captains was one never found?

'Did the captain of the Titanic crash his previous ship?'
No, he didn't. The Olympic was in the Solent, and in the charge of a Solent Pilot, who was deemed at fault in a subsequent court case.

'Why did they say he had a exemplary record?'
      Because he had, perhaps?

'Why was it 12 from its reported position?'
Because navigation in 1912 was not a precise science.

'Was the Titanic engraved with the name or plates originally?'
Yes. Just as Olympic's name was engraved into her hull.

Out of all the bodies found and no they didn't get all of them but the captains was one never found?
      Relevance being?

'Why was the captain sleeping in his close? Captain of another ship too?'
Captains are allowed to sleep. That is why there are Watchkeeping Officers.
'These things can be researched. There's record out there.'
These things have been intensively researched already. However, conspiracists simply refuse to accept any research which challenges their fantasies.

Some pieces of obscure documentation show that Gigantic was merely a very unofficial consideration for the name. She was ordered in 1911 as Britannic.

Noo Britannic original name was Britannic that theory is fake Britannic was already called Britannic before Titanic left Belfast.

Would have been nice if they had preserved 'Olympic' as a tourism draw in Halifax,. It would have been a fitting final home for and a tribute to the millions who left Europe for America..... many of whom arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax. Halifax has strong Titanic ties too with most of the victims buried there.

Most of the victims bodies were never recovered. Only 300 or so of the 1,500 lost were ever recovered.

Should also mention the fact that after the Titanic disaster the Brittanic was redesigned with double sides & later the olympic was withdrawn so she could also be rebuilt with full double sides.

"Forgotten" Sister..??? Who said RMS Olympic is forgotten. She is equally celebrated along with her famous twin Titanic.
All 3 Olympic class steamers are equally famous.

0:00 let's face it,in reality there's nothing romantic about 1500 people drowning or dying of hypothermia.

One minor correction at 08:37 concerning design details and differences between the Olympic and Titanic. Inside the red rectangle is not where the Café Parisien is located and where State Rooms were added as a result of Ismay noticing the promenade was not being used. This occurres on B-deck, where the whole 1st Class was enclosed by a promenade, like A-Deck as well.
Then, focusing on A-deck, the design change made the experience walking on deck more friendly towards the passengers. Concerning there was more protection now from the wind and rain, with the steel screening and sliding windows etc.
