Oooh, the claw! The claw is our master! lol Man, I remember the claw! I looked awful with bangs, so I never ventured towards that hairstyle, but I do remember seeing all of my friends rocking them.
The Blue Castle is one of my all-time favorites as well as a comfort re-read, so if you do ever come back to it I hope you enjoy it! the bracket sounds like a lot of fun!
Your discussion of Empire of Pain made me realize that I would love to see a video about your favorite narrative nonfiction! And the bracket/voting project sounds fun!!
Oh gosh this video just made me realize you have channel memberships! AHHHH!!! For some reason I always thought you only had Patreon? Which I can't do bc of weird things in my country, but I can do memberships!!! Brb joining!!!
@@bookslikewhoa I'm glad I found out! It's not much but I'm happy to be able to support you in a small way after enjoying your videos for so many years! 😊
When you asked for recommendations a couple months ago, I had a feeling you were going to do this video. I hope you do a second round since I’m sure a bunch of the recommendations would be, at a minimum, enjoyable reads. Five stars is a high bar, of course. Great video!
I was spoiled for the twist in the fifth season in the first sentence of a goodreads review in 2019 lol that said I still love that series so much and have read it twice now. Actually treated myself to a Jemisin short story on my flight today and just reminded how much I love her craft and how to writes 💜 so glad you had a great time!!
Neil Gaiman is my favorite author, so I'm biased, but I would recommend The Graveyard Book. It's got strong found family and self discovery themes. It's so sweet
The Yellow Wallpaper has a soft spot in my heart because to date, it's the only thing I've been able to convince my husband to read, and he loved it. But I agree it's probably about a 4 star, and I think it's definitely the strongest of the short stories in that collection even though I wish it were longer
I've been curious about We Ride Upon Sticks for a while, and it sounds so freaking fun. I'm so excited to read it now. Hah! Under a rock. Holy Shit! is how I felt about The Fifth Season. Thank you for not spoiling that one bit for others because I know I had a lot of fun discovering it when I read the book myself. It was definitely a 5-star trilogy for me. I highly recommend the audiobooks too. I did a blended read and really enjoyed it. The bracket sounds really fun!
I have been intrigued and drawn to We Ride Upon Sticks many times over the last year-- I was a child of the 80s (well, teen) and I played hockey in the 80s. I fear it may be too young adult for me but it's the summer.. a great time to try something new!
The Yellow Wallpaper has always been a compelling read to me. If you're interested in audio/old time radio adaptations, Suspense produced an enigmatic version in the '40s for Agnes Moorehead that I return to: ua-cam.com/video/MAk9YP70rrs/v-deo.html&ab_channel=OldTimeRadioArchive
Great books and loved hearing your thoughts! I have a chronic pain condition and wow it’s crazy how the methods of looking at management are very laid out in Empire of Pain. When you put the pieces together it’s kinda crazy. 🤣 I would love for you to do this again with voting again!
Oh man, I love the bracket idea! I recommended One Crazy Summer on Patreon, but I am so pumped that you read We Ride Upon Sticks because that was one of my sneaky favorites of last year.
LOL.. well the books I have read and loved were all eliminated! I don't think i voted so there's that LOL.. I wouldn't have predicted that you'd rate The Turn of the Key (3 stars for me) or Neverwhere (5 stars for me) at 5 stars. I do hope you'll read Psalm for the Wild-Built! It's such a delight.
I think you would enjoy a psalm for the wild-build a lot and it's really short. But if you ever pick it up, make sure to read it when you need a break. It's cozy af, but definitely more vibes than plot.
Loved this vlog. The members/patrons did a great job. So happy that you loved The Fifth Season. I read it last year and finished the trilogy about a month ago. I was blown away and loved it so much.
Empire of Pain was great. I have to read his other books. I’ve read two Anne Applebaum, including Iron Curtain, and I feel like I should like her more than I do. I keep giving her 3 stars meaning good but not great.
My Best Friend's Exorcism fell flat to me. I thought I would love it but it was just ok I thought. I'm with you though a 5 star for me is a best of all time book.
As an 80's baby, I love a Grady Hendrix book. Although, this one was my least favorite of the 3 of his I've read so far, while Final Girl Support Group was my favorite. The 5th Season I definitely enjoyed, but it was a 4 star for me. (I did feel like maybe the hype was a bit over done for it 🤫, especially while Robin Hobb's masterpieces I feel don't receive anywhere near the level of hype they deserve) I'd love to see you read Gaimon. I would recommend Coraline to dip your toes in. It's still one of my daughter and my favorites. Loved 😍 all the kitty cameos. ❤ a body positive 🐈 queen. 😆 🤣
Im reading The Turn of the Key just now and it's pulled me out of a reading slump - so bingeable! Read Empire of Pain a couple of months back, also gave it 4.5. It took me a while to get through but not in a bad way.
I see so many people loving N. K. Jemisin's books and I have yet to figure out why her books don't work for me. First, I read The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms and hated the second half. Then I read The Fifth Season and gave it 3 stars with no intention of continuing with the series. It's good that the series won so many prizes, and sits on so many people's favourite lists, but I'm the odd one out here, wondering if something is wrong with me.
Love this vlog, the bracket idea sounds fun! You reviewed several books I have been interested in on this vlog. I always respect your reviews and usually agree with them so that was really helpful! Going to give Fifth Season another try as I DNF'd it pretty early on. (I get so discouraged with a thick fantasy if I don't gel with it quickly) I think I'll give We Ride Upon Sticks a try closer to Fall, I'm definitely a mood reader. I enjoyed the moment of reality when your cat threw up! I have two kitties (brothers) and they have been hocking up a hairball storm the last week!
charlotte perkins gillman is also quite a very serious r*cist and wrote a few sci fi classics that are all about eugenics so! her work is powerful but she also had a lot of opinions that no one even asked for during her own time period lol. we ride upon sticks seems wild and surreal but one of the most unique books i've heard of! i want to read empire of pain but i just finished his other book so i put it on my wishlist!
I had to look this up. From a brief scan, I think it can incorporate attraction to people who identify as women as a woman, but not necessarily consider themselves a lesbian. I had never heard the word, and am very intrigued so I wanted to comment in hopes of a discussion about it in the comments
I took it to mean definitely attracted to women (“minimally bisexual” in the sense of at least bisexual, not only a little bisexual), possibly only attracted to women (sapphic through and through).
@@britwww Ah. A lot of people prefer sapphic because it’s a more inclusive term, in the vein of using wlw instead of lesbian, and therefore less specific when speculating on the the identity of someone who never personally officially identified as a lesbian. Sapphic is the umbrella term, as it were.
You looks so beautiful in the yellow! Looks great with your skin tone.
My favorite Neil Gaiman is The Graveyard Book, which I think you’d like better because it’s middle grade fantasy. I love it! ☺️
The Yellow Wallpaper is just iconic. I think you would really appreciate it.

Ok, I was not expecting a 49:30 long video but I will consider it my well-deserved Sunday treat.
I've never heard of The Yellow Wallpaper, but just bought it on audible. It sounds right up my alley.
The bit you read about the Claw made me cackle! I went to school with claws & maybe even created one for myself in 9th grade…..
Yes!! You finally read Fifth Season! The entire series is amazing.

Empire of Pain is one of my favorite non-fiction books. If you have access to Hulu their series Dope/Sick pairs really well with it.
Did the Perkins Gilman collection include Herland? That's a hell of an interesting novella

‘We Ride Upon Sticks’ by Quan Barry sounds like a John Hughes Movie that will be ruined by the CW with gritty aesthetics.

What does “minimally bisexual but possibly sapphic through and through” in reference to the author of the Yellow Wallpaper mean?

If the question is the foundation of the assertion, she had a well known lesbian relationship with Adeline Knapp. :)
