Isbell is one of the greatest songwriters who has ever lived....and genre doesn't matter. Listen to his music ..it ain't country...far more rock and roll with a lot of quieter tunes.. Love your reviews by the way. His latest song Cast Iron Skillet just dropped and it's insanely great..
Having in my life once encountered a woman with eyes like flipping off a light switch who had just crashed her car and didn't care. I understood that I was not equipped to handle the situation and retreated from it. She needed love. I couldn't.
Todd Snider described Americana as "unsuccessful country". Obviously people like Isbell, Childers, etc are helping change that, but still not as popular as mainstream country. Usually a larger focus on songwriting and drawing from a variety of traditional music. Folk, bluegrass, blues, gospel, roots etc.
The emotional weight of Jason’s lyrics and Melodie’s are already so strong that for the delivery to also be heavily emotional would push it into melodramatic territory. I think he steps back a little on the delivery so as to not be cliche “sad” music. He’s letting the song stand on its own feet without hamming it up by trying too hard on the delivery.

This man inspired me to write lyrics for the first time after being in love with music my whole life. Jason Isbell is a legend!
It's so nice seeing someone from back home in Greenhill being recognized and adored...
Jack white covered this song acoustic and it’s great as well.
Y’all gonna do “middle of the morning” by Isbell? It is fantastic
Yep, we're definitely planning on checking out both of the other Isbell songs. Might be a little bit though. -Joel

This song is one of his best and that is saying something. Isbell is a great story teller

I think it sounds different because of the pseudo electronic sound the drummer is getting. It's a very unusual drum pattern
Jason would tell you he's in a rock band.
