It's so rare for a player as skilled and nuanced as Isbell to be so good at talking about the way he approaches his sound. So many players of his caliber just go by feel and intuition and let their techs worry about the details. I fully believe that he is among the most intentional performers working today (that includes his lyrics and melodies) and I respect the hell out of that.
There is a ton of integrity in his recordings. He writes them a certain way and then just puts them to tape. Especially on Southeastern, there are songs there where I'm certain he didn't even put compression on his vocals.
Jason demonstrates an amazing level of maturity and professionalism when he talks about keeping stage volume low so that the FOH engineer can have as much control as possible. I mean, he's a modern day guitar god. He could choose to be a real diva if he wanted, but instead he makes it easier for his team to create the best possible experience for his audience. What a gem.
So great to see you putting the vintage gear to work out on the road! You get to play them...and...we get to hear them! And we all know they'd rather be out on stage than in the case! Thanks for sharing your talents with us. Peace.
At the time of posting this comment, 11 people dislike a video that goes through some of the gnarliest vintage guitars you will ever see, including what could be the most famous Les Paul burst that’s currently in circulation. Every piece of aforementioned gear is discussed thoroughly by guys that are solid musicians and actually know their shit. I guess I will just never understand how people like the 11 folks that disliked this video exist on this planet. You’d think a condition so serious it affects taste that badly would also be fatal, at least it should be. Rock on Jason and PG 🤘🏼
I loved this as well, but one thing that wasn't great was the interviewer would NOT stop interrupting Jason, and most of what he was saying wasn't even contributing to the conversation. He just could not seem to shut the hell up and let Jason talk. This would've been perfect to me if that didn't happen, but overall this really was a legendary rundown.
16:00. Ed King’s red eye. Wow. Just wow. Glad it’s in the hands of the song writers’ highlight reel himself - Jason Isbell. “Maybe time running out is a gift.”
Can't believe I only just stumbled across this rig rundown. I love what a gearhead Jason is. And much as I have always loved his songwriting, singing, and playing, I think his response to the question of whether he tries to take it easy on the Red Eye just makes me love him even more. Guitars are meant to be played and enjoyed, not babied.
I told my wife at his concert in Köln that he is the prime example of a person that uses each guitar to get it's specific tone. If he pulls out a tele after playing his strat you are going to hear a tele vs strat sound. He doesn't change anything to make them sound alike. And that Red Eye sounds awesome.
Absolutely love Jason Isbell, I love the fact he came out to tell about each guitar instead of his tech shows how much he loves his instruments and his art
Jason Isbell is fan-freaking-tastic. The Nashville Sound is a great album. Perry is continuing to improve as an interviewer - he used to interrupt people every 3 seconds, and there's still a little bit of that, but Perry is such a massive guitarhead that you have to love the guy.
I've watched these videos for a couple of years now and there are few artists that come out to talk about their guitars, amps, pedals, etc. Jason Isbell is the real deal: very approachable, honest, down to earth. Plus I love his music. He's on par with Peter Frampton and Steve Stevens.
Pretty sure that Townshend SG Sadler Vaden bought off of Reverb is the same one I was chasing a while back. The good news is it ended up with someone who can actually play the damn thing.
Awwww bullshit. What about _my_ rig??? I haven't gotten the call yet. They must have the wrong number for me or something! _"This is my cheap foreign made G&L Tele. And this is my cheap foreign made Epiphone..."_
I once sold Jimbo a case I had listed on Craigslist. We met at a 7-11. They were on tour and still traveling in a van. Probably 2011-12ish. Nice bloke.
just saw these guys last week in edmonton, all 3 are killer killer players....but my god Jimbo!!! never heard a bass player make those kind of noises before!! so fucking good!
Never heard of them but I love that song and that sound man needs to be paid top dollar he pitched that sound perfectly for that room I just listen over and over and over again to just that beginning and the guitar solo was so in pocket
"What did you do today?" "Oh, I dunno, went to the grocery store, did some laundry. Oh yeah, I also stood on the stage at the Ryman with Jason Isbell and talked geAR WHILE HE HELD ED KING'S LES PAUL." These PG interviewers must have steel composure, because when that guitar came out I almost lost it. And I'm just watching on my laptop.
Ed's guitar got my attention in the preview. Filter'Trons were out months before Gibson's. Ray Butt's built those at Chet's request because the Dyna's magnets were causing intonation issues. Those early Filters are the best on the planet. Pete Townshend on Who's Next and Quad. Every AC/DC lick, Neil's Ohio and Alabama, love Jet Firebirds!
Love the dissapointed ”Ok...” from Isbell at 46:00 when the PG presenter mentions that they don’t have a lot of time because they are about to open the venue doors. He would obviously rather keep talking gear 🙂.
What a fantastic collection of guitars. Also love his passion for playing them, rather than keeping locked up somewhere in the dark. Anyone know if he’s ever mentioned how much his Red Eye set him back? He probably hasn’t, but I’m just curious.
FYI: 6x10 bass cabs are typically ported, 8x10’s are usually sealed, hence the “bigger low end” Jimbo was talking about. It’s not the cab shape, it’s the ports that make the difference. Not 100% sure about this specific Ashdown model, but I’d bet money that’s the case.
That's the weirdest thing about gigging at the Ryman. While you're setting up, until right before soundcheck, you're in an active exhibit with people coming in and out and posing all day.
First I thought they would never top GnR. Then I thought they would never top Bonamassa 2. Only one RR could stand a chance of topping this. ... Pearl Jam Tour rumoured for 2020 - PLEASE make it happen PG! Seriously though - love Jason - wonderful player AND songwriter (hard to find someone as good at both) and thoroughly deserves his success.
The best part of this is that Jason newstead gave him his bass, fucking cool as fuck that is proper darkness and no messin, rock and fuckin roll baby, yeeehaw!
A lot of guys just stash them away and it hurts. Sure it accrues value, but it's tragic to not have them being played. Richie Sambora owns (or owned) at least two of them and he plays them every show and on every record.

Do we know who makes the mic iso's positioned on the amps? Love this idea instead of plexiglass
Premier Guitar really Loved this one. Dying to see you do a rig rundown for Steve Earl and the Dukes
I absolutely love it when the artist is a gearhead, extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his setup.
When the cats out knowledge me , I LOVE IT *I HATE IT* GARSHDADGUMMIT DOODLY DOODOODOO !!!
The guy is literally a vintage guitar history destroyer.

Totally agree - shame the presenter interrupts too much.
There is a ton of integrity in his recordings. He writes them a certain way and then just puts them to tape. Especially on Southeastern, there are songs there where I'm certain he didn't even put compression on his vocals.
Total respect for Jason!
"No Gadafis" 😂 That's gotta be one of the best lines from a Rig Rundown ever.
I want to know what the weirdest gig was that he did to bankroll that guitar.
Probably some prince in Kuwait or Oman
“They turn into a dead man’s toenails” has my vote for runner up... 🤮😂
Beyonce did a gig for that scumbag
Jason demonstrates an amazing level of maturity and professionalism when he talks about keeping stage volume low so that the FOH engineer can have as much control as possible. Mark Ox4 here.. such a pleasure knowing Jason and Sadler rocking the Ox4 LIVIN!!!
Mark Stow why wouldn’t they?! Killer pups 🤘🏼
Best shoe game on rig rundown.
Is he wearing 3D Nikes?!
Came here to say the same thing. Those are slick, dawg!
The polar opposite from Nels Clines then.. “What are those!!!!” Love that rundown (and Nels generally), but his footwear is disastrous
Im brand new to Jason, and now I listen to his records all the time. What a great guy, and musician.
Well this is the best Rig Rundown of all time...
leaps and bounds above the previous one
Todd McKernan6 days ago
Well this is the best Rig Rundown of all time... Cat spits out , "dead man's toe nail " ..Then I found YOU and your youness .
Warren Haynes has a great one too.
"When we talk, my inner 12-yr-old wants to smash the coffee table" is the BEST line ever in a Rig Rundown!!! 😂😂😆😂
So great to see you putting the vintage gear to work out on the road! You get to play them...and...we get to hear them! And we all know they'd rather be out on stage than in the case! Thanks for sharing your talents with us. Peace.

“Maybe time running out is a gift.”
Jason is such a guitar geek and we love him!
JIMBO HART is one HELLUVA bass player! Coming from a fellow 4-stringer. RESPECT!
everone is this band is packing heat on their feet
Can't believe I only just stumbled across this rig rundown. I love what a gearhead Jason is. There’s a more recent one. Think it’s called Gibson tv.
Jason and Sadler are great guitar players, love 'em.

We did NOT see Joe Perry showing his Les Paul's and his John 5 signature Tele's lololol
Loved Jason before, love him even more now.
Jason Isbell is fan-freaking-tastic. The Nashville Sound is a great album. Perry is continuing to improve as an interviewer - he used to interrupt people every 3 seconds, and there's still a little bit of that, but Perry is such a massive guitarhead that you have to love the guy.

Alright, PG - Rig Rundown is done. There's no way in hell that anything's topping this.
bam
Awwww bullshit. What about _my_ rig??? I haven't gotten the call yet. They must have the wrong number for me or something!
_"This is my cheap foreign made G&L Tele. And this is my cheap foreign made Epiphone..."_
Jason is the purest definition of what some folks describe as "Down to Earth".
I once sold Jimbo a case I had listed on Craigslist. We met at a 7-11. They were on tour and still traveling in a van. Probably 2011-12ish. Nice bloke.
sold him a case ... Of scotch whiskey , of Lethbridge Pilsner beer ? Bad case of the blues ?? Tee Heeeeheee . Daddish jokes .
this is the most special rig rundown guitars l have ever seen and will ever see- not really even believable - my guitar nerdness cannot comprehend
I love that Jason Isbell will always talk guitars. A great songwriter too. Joe Bonamassa is like that as well.
One of the very best!
Now THAT is what we call a 'rig rundown'!!!
Loved it!
just saw these guys last week in edmonton, all 3 are killer killer players....but my god Jimbo!!! never heard a bass player make those kind of noises before!! so fucking good!
Man! That is an astonishing collection and still being used on the road no less! Wow!
One of the best Rig Rundowns ever, the bass player was great
What a gracious and humble guy.
14:45 No Qadafis, no terrible people, but find me some gigs so I can buy this guitar.
LOL this guy rules
My man said, ". . . to get the Gilmour bends." Just one more reason besides those great kicks and life-changing tunes to totally just love ole Jason!
He sounds like a combination of Hank Hill and Ray Romano and I love it.
Best Rig Rundown in a while! That Les Paul story!!!!
I'm getting that he likes the middle position on most guitars? lol
Never heard of them but I love that song and that sound man needs to be paid top dollar he pitched that sound perfectly for that room I just listen over and over and over again to just that beginning and the guitar solo was so in pocket
I love Sadler’s work with Jason both live and in the studio, but if he says, “Yeah,” one more time...😂
Hands down, Jason is my favorite songwriter since Chris Stapleton. Except that Jason is such an incredible guitarist. And what a nice and humble guy.
Nice watch Jason is sporting, Looks like a Rolex Datejust on a Jubilee-Bracelet
What a great, likable, and humble dude{s}
You love the comments and we love you Jason
I believe the scratch plates were made from Celluloid Nitrate
Oh I'm so gassed. Wanna hang out with Isbell and nerd out on gear.
This is the calmest I've ever seen Perry.
Congrats on all the success and guitars.
As soon as he pulled that 59 out I knew it was Ed Kings before he even said anything. I can't believe I didn't see this one that was out a year ago
"What did you do today?"
"Oh, I dunno, went to the grocery store, did some laundry. Oh yeah, I also stood on the stage at the Ryman with Jason Isbell and talked geAR WHILE HE HELD ED KING'S LES PAUL."
These PG interviewers must have steel composure, because when that guitar came out I almost lost it. And I'm just watching on my laptop.
I don't know about this being the best Rig Run Down but it sure is the longest.
Not my style of music but this guy is awesome! He is perfect for this show.
Every AC/DC lick, Neil's Ohio and Alabama, love Jet Firebirds!
most informative. perry is a good interviewer, keeps things moving
Excellent guitars of course. But bringing some heat with the sacai nikes as well. Hats off Mr. Isbell.
Mark Pacificar Aaaaaaand you’ve got Mike with the Sacai’s AND the Jeremy Dean long sleeve. Amazing!!
Steven Snyder yes!!!!
This was so good! So fascinating, beautiful guitars, and so many pedals!! Good grief, wow 😮🎸🎶
Love the dissapointed ”Ok...” from Isbell at 46:00 when the PG presenter mentions that they don’t have a lot of time because they are about to open the venue doors. He would obviously rather keep talking gear 🙂.
I'd go to a show at the Ryman where Jason and the band just talks about gear. He might sell that one out too.
Jason is the real deal. Great Rig. I wish again you could have talked to the keyboard player. I see a Mellotron sitting over there.
Miss Jason with Drive by ...such great years seeing them live
What a fantastic collection of guitars. Also love his passion for playing them, rather than keeping locked up somewhere in the dark. Anyone know if he’s ever mentioned how much his Red Eye set him back? He probably hasn’t, but I’m just curious.
I watched a GQ interview with him and he says it’s valued at $500,000, but didn’t say if he paid that or not.
@@JrdynBenter1A half a million?!
Wonder how much it costs to book Jason Isbell for a private party.
one billlllllllion dollars.
@@millerc73 one gilion dollars*
$20
I read somewhere his quote is 100K, but I have no idea how true that is. It does broadly fit with his live draw though, so it seems plausible.
$200,000 minimum - $399.000+
"It's like frozen pizza. It's just gotten really good"

Jason really has it all, hasn't he. Good for him!
Thanks for your lovely comment you’re such a lovely fan. Do you mind me adding you to my special fans club?
Shout out to the cheeseball in the background at 1:10:36. Keep doing your thing man.

Pearl Jam
Tour rumoured for 2020 - PLEASE make it happen PG!
Seriously though - love Jason - wonderful player AND songwriter (hard to find someone as good at both) and thoroughly deserves his success.
My gearhead itch has been scratched. BTW Peter Stroud's business partner at 65 Amps is Dan Boul.
I was not expecting the '59.
Sick WOBF from the guitar tech!
I want a man that talks about me like Jason talks about his guitars...
I will honey: Get in tune or I’ll sell you…
ahaha did they both say "thanks for joining us" at the exact same time at the beginning? That was awesome
The best part of this is that Jason newstead gave him his bass, fucking cool as fuck that is proper darkness and no messin, rock and fuckin roll baby, yeeehaw!
you should do a rundown on your watch collection
I love his songs ✌️
42:31 EVERY SINGLE GUITAR PLAYER has a vast array of pedals ...90% of which I personally have not heard . All sounding IDENTICAL .
1:06:24 Big Bottom BIG BOTTOM !! . Talkin' 'bout mudflaps , my girls got'em.
Sweet Jesus lord of lords this is incredible
90 minute rig run down, shit yes!
Jason Isbell is here as well !
its simple, if it says Jason Isbell and his wonderful band. I watch and like! Also would love a strap like that on the red eye!
I'm a construction worker and we discuss hammers. Stanley vs Estwing
Time for a new one!
The Dobrato, with a Bigsby AND a B-bender?? Oh snap!!
"Michael is here because he knows more about this stuff than I do..."
As a construction worker, I do obsess over hammers all day. ONE DAY I WILL HAVE THE BEST . Lol
Great rundown gang!
Great episode!
"Celluloid Nitrate."
Most celluloid nitrate came from/comes from Italy. Cutting cost, Fender discontinued celluloid nitrate after '65.
Fantastic video thanks
If there was ever a dude that I would say plays bass...it’s Jimbo
love my Ox4 pickups in my ES335
I'm gonna have the chance to meet Jason at the ryman in a few days . I hope he brings the red eye.
"Standard telecaster pickup in the bridge." Does anyone know what pup that might be in Jason's custom shop tele?
There are people who totally geek out over hammers though, RR buildings and their Martinez hammers.....
Where can I find the road cases for handling several guitars for the road and who makes them and where can you buy them?
Editor - please cut to close ups of the pedals the guitarist is talking about when he is speaking about them!
Fabulous.
Cool gear and all that. But Jimbo is the coolest and nicest guy. Seems so genuine and kind.
Thanks for your lovely comment you’re such a lovely fan. Do you mind me adding you to my special fans club?
This was an awesome education
The pick guard of the 65 tele is Formica
I love that he thinks that his '59 LP is "meant to be heard" instead of being home in a vault.
A lot of guys just stash them away and it hurts. Sure it accrues value, but it's tragic to not have them being played. Richie Sambora owns (or owned) at least two of them and he plays them every show and on every record.
