Wow Desi knocked this interview out of the park .. so many subjects and all approached with grace and humor and follow up questions that got awesome answers from her guest !! I so love this new format where we get to see the strengths of each member of the team ❤❤❤❤
💯
Me too! I couldn’t agree more!
This guy is hilarious.
As for Desi, what more can be said at this point? She handles the interviews with such grace, warmth and eloquence. She's really up there in the list of people I'd love to have a conversation with. What a talented, funny and wonderful person.
"So I had my first few auditions, then I was on a zoom with Scorsese and De Niro" 🤯 This guy is living my dream life. And it seems to be happening to an excellent dude. Fantastic interview, host and guest both! 👏👏
and he was already successful and had an agent, etc...

▫️What a total sweetheart of a guy who can be very funny!
▫️Desi you are great with other people-atop being so funny!
I’m 6’ 250 lbs and powerlift heavy weights. But tears flow freely when I listen to this man sing If We Were Vampires.
Thank you Daily Show for showcasing a great American songwriter.
I had to fight them back when I went to see him live. Beautiful song.
Your prompted me to listen to the song. It is very beautiful. Thank you for showing me, for teaching me something lovely I did not know existed. I heard it twice in a row.
Great song 👍🏼
I'm gonna check him out ✅✅
@@IndependentAZ you won't be disappointed.
His wonderful mastery of vocabulary is on full display. No wonder his lyrics are so beautiful. He comes across as witty, and effortlessly charismatic. She is doing a great job at hosting, great at carrying the conversation, prodding him with short questions and letting him speak. Showing attention and adding short comments to prop the conversation up. It would be surprising if she is not hosting her own show soon.
Well said!!!
Jason Isbell is such an amazing musician and lyricist. I never liked country music growing up, but Isbell, Tyler Childers, Drayton Farley, and Margo Price have made me a fan!
Do you know Sturgill Simpson?
Try him and a band called The Vandoliers.
Eric and Tom, you guys named my go-to list for pretty much the only "country" music that I listen to.
Amanda Shires is also great
@@danmallery9142 ditto. I’m a metal guy by nature, but when I want to hear some twang I spin this stuff.
Or I’ll go back to the 70s and 80s for some Garth, Dwight, Cash , Willie and others.
I'm not a fan of traditional country, but I do like Americana. Just went to see Jason play live a few days ago, in Chicago, and I'm thinking about springing for tickets to see Tyler Childers at Summerfest in Milwaukee.
Desi is an excellent interviewer! This was an interesting interview with someone I had never heard of and didn’t expect to find interesting. I was wrong on both counts because I just watched the movie! He’s an amazing songwriter too. I will look for more of his music. Thanks!
Start at “Southeastern” and you can’t turn back….
Jason’s a poet
Class act.
@@DanielCaseyHopkins one of the greatest albums ever, front to back. All incredible songs.
Last year I asked a longtime friend if she knew of a "perfect song." She sent me a link to "If We Were Vampires."
Then, I started listening to a lot more of his music, and cried a lot. 😢
We went to a few of his shows, now I'm a total fan. His live shows break me.
Long story short, I fell for the girl, too. ❤
I'm not a country man, but Jason Isbell is easily one of the best singer songwriters of our times. The few songs that I have heard from him, is pure poetry. You can tell by the way he weaves these hilarious stories that he is a masterful wordsmith. Now to learn he's in an Oscar-worthy movie I haven't seen yet, I'm definitely gonna have to check it out when it comes on streaming.
Desi Lydic is my crush.
And she's a great interviewer. Very attentive to her guest and brilliant delivery of the questions.
A fan since he was with the band "Drive by Truckers".
I thought of my earliest favorite song of his (Outfit) when I watched this interview. "Cause a southern man tells better jokes"
He is such a great charismatic interviewee. Thoughtful, perceptive, and hilarious.
She needs her own show, now
This is her audition.
He was great. I'm going to have to watch the movie again
She needs this show and this show needs her.
She’s waaaaaaaaaay better than Klepper! 💞🤟
He is quick witted. I'm a big fan.
I had no idea who this guy was, but he's great. And Desi did awesome.
Never heard of Isbell, but he's great. Smart, quick, funny...I bet he's going to be doing a lot more acting.
King of Oklahoma is amazing. This man is the modern Dylan.
Have no idea who he is but he's charming AF 😎, and they've got awesome chemistry. Very fun interview! 👍
What I find striking about his work on this album is he essentially says it was written years ago - during the pandemic. And yet key songs - at least the first 4 and the final 2 - are about he & Amanda splintering apart. "Death Wish" is brutal; "Strawberry Woman" is heartbreaking; "Middle of the Morning" ditto; and "Miles" is self-explanatory. So I take this to mean he's been processing and coping with his marriage's demise for more than a minute. This is the first time I've seen him w/o his wedding band on....makes me kind of sad for them both and especially their daughter. Glad "Weathervanes" is still getting attention....took home the Grammy for Best Americana album but haven't heard it on our local radio which bums me out.
I don't think you're wrong by any means but it seems like she was blindsided by him leaving and after the documentary was released, they were both open about their issues and repeatedly said they had worked through things and were in a better place. I wonder if he had one foot out the door this whole time and it took him a while to actually make the decision. He has said it was "the right decision" and seems like he's very happy now. Who knows if that's an act or if he is genuinely happier out of that relationship.
Strawberry Woman seems especially brutal in hindsight. I thought of it as a love song when it first came out but it very much reads like a bittersweet goodbye now.
@@wonder_of_it_all Completely agree on SW - it's devastating, especially the ending of her back to him...don't know what to make of her bleeding nose - the answer I come up with would radically alter the sense most of us had of their relationship
He is absolutely the best. I have seen him in concert many times. Brilliant music. Has gotten me through some tough times.
I'm a long-time songwriter; never as famous as Jason, never will be. But the process of writing songs for me is just as Jason describes it. It's comforting to know, that I use a process similar to one who is very successful. To be honest, I don't know his songs, but I watched this because I'm spellbound by Desi. Now I have great admiration for Jason and his sense of humour.
Start with his album Southeastern, it is a true masterwork and one of the best albums of the 21st century so far.
Something More Than Free is my favorite Isbell album
It's hard to go wrong really. @@philipbates9648
A smart, articulate guy.
Yeah I thought so too. 👍❤️
He’s a poet. Great songwriter and an incredible guitarist.
That was an outstanding interview. Gives me almost "Hot Ones" vibes. Desi let Jason speak and tell his story, with incredible dead-pan humor. Well done Daily Show.
I loved it when Trevor and Jason got together.
I could watch them talk about anything and everything.
Jason’s smart as a whip!
I was one of those big dudes crying at his show in Cologne last year. 6'2" 300lbs blubbering 5 separate times. 😅😅
I was in Köln as well! But it was in 2022 in November, right? Not 2023. And indeed it was fantastic. He even played my song request Relatively Easy which he usually doesn't play anymore.
He said that, and as a 5’6” guy, my thought was “it’s not the big guys that are afraid to cry, it’s the little ones” Most of my big friends are just confident teddy bears.
what does being big or small have to do with having emotions? don't take yourself too seriously expressing emotions is healthy .
@@userxyz783 wasn’t size part of this conversation?
Emotional vulnerability is the new macho❤ Takes a real man to be comfortable with his emotions.
She’s something special!
Was thinking this was a particularly great episode even before I saw the guest. Tonight’s episode was made for me
Great guest and WOW IS DESI GREAT OR WHAT ??? Talented, funny and an overall wonderful interviewer !!!
One of the great songwriters of his generation
Go get yourself some albums of Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. It will change your life.
Which ones? The earlier ones or the later ones?
Southeastern is his best, imo. It was his first after getting sober and it is incredibly powerful.
He was also a Drive By Trucker
@@tompatchak8706 Start with Southeastern. It's life-changing.
Outfit with the Truckers is an oldie but a goodie. He’s the best out there as a singer songwriter, Todd Snider is pretty close, he’s just more comical.
Excellent interview and what an interesting person. I have to listen to his music now.
Refreshing to know I’m not the only one who hasn’t a clue who he is but because of this interview I now want to find out 😊
I like to tell people you can’t see where a man is going and until you seen where he’s from, so start at the beginning and move forward from there
Oh, and listen to it in your car because some of the songs in guitar are so intricate you have to be able to feel it as well as hear it
“Speedtrap Town” might be one of the best pieces of music about small town living out there.
@@mikeobrien1118 YES SPEEDTRAP TOWN! One of my favorite songs of all time, makes you feel something in a way that few other songs do.
+1.. The daily show has its foot on the accelerator. .. The round table of weekly comic genious hostes and now this! .. Priceless comedy. .. Cheers, Vail, Colorado
I want to hang out Jason Isbell because of this interview, what a cool dude.
He’s a solid fella
Isbell was fantastic in Killers, absolutely held his own against DiCaprio. Bill and Earnest’s face off is one of the best scenes in the film.
Desi looking about as starstruck as I would be. I just absolutely love this guy and his music-and I'm not even a country fan 🤩
He’s a rocker with a twang. It’s more Alt-country than straight Nashville country. He’s an incredible guitarist and an even better songwriter.
I haven't seen the daily show in a while, but if she is the new host, I will start watching again. She's a great interviewer.
So happy to see Jason Isbell get more mainstream attention!
He’s been getting mainstream attention(just switch streams) :)
I really like him!
I am not a country music fan and am pretty out to lunch on pop music in general. I had no clue who this guy was when I saw Killers Of The Flower Moon, I actually figured he was a stage actor or some Euro/Australian guy that Leo and Marty plucked from obscurity. But the performance was incredible and I was super impressed. This guy should def keep acting.
He would probably not classify himself as “country.”
Since Tom petty passed, Jason isbell is my biggest living influence as a musician.
Oh man I am right there with you. I consider Petty to be the best songwriter of all time, but with him gone Jason easily takes the cake.
Yep
Dude is super funny. Did not know him but I like him already hahahaha.
You're in for a ride! :)
Ohhh man.
I tell people to start at the beginning so you can see where he came from and then cycled through one or two songs per album so you can see where he’s going.
Because you see where he is now and this is way far away from where he was in 2007
Love his understated sense of humour.
his old band, Drive By Truckers, i remember thinking he was messing up leaving, but he has proven me wrong and had huge success
The most articulate words I've ever herd with a southern twang. Very impressive person.
Start listening to his songs NOW. you won’t regret it!
What a strangely rude comment…
@@yerald_a Yes, Thats true and I'm sorry. But that is my experience. There was also one time in early 2000's. I was with a bunch from Tennesse, and I heard a couple guys talking about computers. That was also very strange for a northerner like me to hear lol. I don't want to think this way but their representatives like MTG and Comer and others are not helping the stereotype. Where I'm from we elect representatives who are highly educated and behave honorably. The American south keeps electing wrestling and football coaches and such. Not only that but they continue to re-elect these kinds of people. We do have some northern states that are acting equally as dumb, but these are typically what are referred to as "red states". so, they belong in the same undereducated group. I don't pick their representatives, they do.
Y’all gotta start listening to Tennesse Brando and Trae Crowder for insightful southern eloquence, and a few more appropriate and timely F-Bombs than Jason’s ever likely to let fly.
@@fonkenful I like Tennesse Brando. Another intelligent and insightful southerner is "Beau of the Fifth Column". If you haven't yet, check him out. He tells it like it is, in a way that is difficult to argue with.
Such a great interview! I haven't seen the movie, and wasn't familiar with Jason's music, but based on his this interview, I must check it out.
You have some interview chemistry, Desi! 💜✊
Elephant is one of his older great songs, if you needed a bit of a cry today.
Oh my gosh. Wish I could listen to the album Southeastern again for the first time. You're in for a treat. Enjoy.
I was at the Ryman last October when he opened the concert with “Cover me Up” - I’ve been to many of his concerts and typically it’s an encore song. Guess what? He played the entire southeastern album start to finish. What an epic night!
His music is the very best.
Thanks to the WellRED guys for putting me onto Jason Isbell 👍👍
Better known as the Skews guys
Of course I’ve heard them mention Jason quite a few times and I’ve always been “blahdeblardey, country music guy 🙄🙄” (like Bubba Shot was all I could handle for country music exposure 😂) - I’m so thrilled TDS had Jason on so I could see what an idiot I’ve been. Can’t wait to go see him perform Cast Iron Skillet next😍
@@offtarget1758 cause country is just pop music with a southern twang. Isbell is more Americana/alt-country. I highly suggest the musicians on YT channels GemsOnVHS and WesternAF but I insist listening to John Moreland.
No…. Not at all “country.” Can tear up a Pink Floyd song… you won’t be sorry you took the time to check him out.)
First time I’ve heard of this guy🤦♂️ where have I been? 😂
Have to be really off then”beaten path,” in music. And he’s worth every minute.
@@TennesseeYaya 👍
“Break wind” is one of my favorite southern euphemisms for “flatulence.” Most times I cackle when I hear it.
My southern sister used to say ‘air’ instead of ‘break wind’. As in, “Forgive my air!” She thought it sounded sophisticated. She wasn’t counting on our most unsophisticated, squirrel hunting uncle responding, “To air is human, but to forgive is most definitely divine!” 😂
We say that here in the UK, too. Is it an export from the UK? Who knows, but I haven't heard it said in years lol
@@lifesbutastumble Thanks for your reply! It inspired me to look into the provenance of, “To err is human, to forgive, divine.” Granted it was my uncle’s pun on air/err, but the original quote was from Alexander Pope, a Brittish writer who wrote satire and poetry in the 17th century. This phrase was from his “Essay on Criticism”. He’s remembered more as a philosopher and took inspiration from the phrase, “To err is human, to persist in error is satanic.” put forth by Saint Augustine, who picked it up from Seneca before him. Pope had a few other phrases from his “Essay” that made it into public consciousness: “Hope springs eternal…” and “A little learning is a dangerous thing!” Have a great day!
@@Blackbird_Singing_in_the-NightWow, I did a little cursory digging myself after I commented, but certainly didn't find anything as in-depth as what you wrote. A great little nugget of history right there! Thank you :)
We unsophisticated Hoosiers call it "floating an air biscuit."
Absolutely love this guy. Wish I had one of him back home when I visit.
What a fine example of a true Southern gentleman. He breaks all of the stereotypes with such grace and compassion. Thanks for featuring this wonderful artist. Both hugely talented and humble.
"You could tell, uh, he had lost a great battle."
😆😆😆 Oh, _man,_ this interview looked like fun.
Desi really is fantastic. And Jason Isbell acting. 🤯
As a woman with the sense of humor of a 14 year old - that was funny. ❤So happy to see her doing this role. I agree she needs her own show. She is way smarter than she needs to show people. I love that about her.
Brilliant, brilliant interview. I could listen to the two of them forever...
Great job, Desi ! Great guest, too - I didn't know Jason before this but I feel like I do now - cool guy: funny, interesting and humble.
I really liked that guy! Going to go check out some of his music...!
Start with "Southeastern", then "Something More than Free". Then just follow in order....
@@kristinemunholland8980 thank you!
Great interview Desi ❤
I wasn't gonna watch this movie, but after I heard that it was directed by Scorcese... and then after THIS interview??? I am DEFINITELY gonna watch this movie!!😂
met him years ago in the shoals, he was a nice and unassuming man then, congrats on your success Jason!
I know Jon Stewart gets a lot of recognition, but all the hosts and writers on the show are fantastic. Great find on Desi!
Thanks for posting this. I saw the show but appreciated the extended version
Isbell is pure Gold
Listen to his songs when he was with his first band, the Drive-by Truckers. Fantastic song writing
Very nice interview, wasn’t that familiar with Jason before this and now I am a fan 😊😎💕
Give desi her own show, The chair… She is incredible.
More of all of this, please. Thank you.
Such great advice about the creative and emotional processes! Great interview and week, Desi! ❤
What a fun interview with interesting banter
Love ya Desi!
She is my favorite for a permanent host. It doesn’t hurt that she is gorgeous and has the sense of humor of a 14 year old boy.
Man, I have been a fan of his for many years and it is so cool to see him get the accolades that he has always deserved. His songwriting is sublime. With John Prine no longer with us, he is one of my go-to for listening to music to move my emotions.
I've always thought from years ago that Desi was the best...just hadn't been given enough of a spot to show it with little skit-vids....glad her hosting is finally proving it. 🥳❤️
Awesome interview!
brilliant man!
Anxiety, still backseat driving on my best days.
Am I writing a song or editing a song? Perfect analogy of life!
I like him and I don't usually like country. I'm also from the south being born in Huntsville Alabama raised in Detroit Michigan
I agree, me either, but I respect his deep thinking, and as a blues player, I can tell he knows his way around instruments, so he is "in touch" with his soul, and the how's and why's of spirituality
"That person had lost a great battle" 😂I'm dead.
Fantastic interview for both of them. Desi is a fun interviewer!
This guy is a natural.:)
What a Lovely Man.
Great interview.
Great interview
Isbell crushed in this segment. 😂
Great interview, Desi!
So glad Stewart came back to TDS. Now, all the other talent on the show will get more exposure and well-deserved praise. This situation will increase the probability that they get their own projects. 👍✅
