Fun things about aldi: they've been non-bagged for as long as I've been going there. Also, the quarter for the cart is so the store saves money by not having someone spend time outside gathering the carts. People tend to bring it back so they can get their money back.

Been shopping at Aldi since the 90s. They have always been bagless. You'd bag your own stuff, and the groceries were typically CHEAP.
I remember paying $0.25 for canned food back in the day. Saved a ton of money buying food there. Would recommend it if you're on a tight budget.

This year I started cooking dry beans instead of buying canned (because of the cost) and I will never go back. I also started making broth from veggie scraps (free) to cook the beans with and it’s so delicious and economical. Making broth from scratch makes me feel like a witch, it’s amazing. They’re both really easy, beginner friendly recipes. Do it.

In case no one talked about this yet, milk that's sold in room temperature is called UHT milk, UHT stands for ultra-high-temperature processing. Basically the milk is sterilized and packed in an airtight container so that there is no bacteria to spoil. That's why it also lasts a really long time unopened, but at the end of the day it *is* milk so you have to put it in the fridge once it's opened.

For my ppl shopping for the first time FROM SCRATCH (like not even seasoning) this is my advice for a $10/week budget:
-Prioritize one food group at a time so that you can get the better quality and most economical option. Your first trip should ALWAYS start with a bulk bag of potatoes imo. The next week get bulk protein like a tray of chicken thighs etc.
    - Always have a source of fat and a source of salt. This will make your food taste better. That first week when you got potatoes get a can of spam or get those canned adobo peppers etc with a dried soup packet if your don't eat meat, these are cheap items that you only need a small amount to impart flavor.
    - If you can get an onion or a sleeve of garlic get it. Aromatics make a difference.
    - Don't feel bad about canned veg. It still has nutrients and it's better than no veg at all. We're all doing our best and if that's all you can afford that's good enough.

  • @emmamix

Funny thing, I actually _did_ survive off of just a bag of potatoes like that for an entire Fall break (10 days, I think?) once in college. Not my greatest moment, but I made a LOOOOT of different potato dishes and I now consider an expert tater chef.

    • @emmamix
      @emmamix 11 місяців тому +10

@@cassieguedea8880 Yep! I basically just had seasoning, butter, and olive oil... I think I had a half gallon of milk, too. I did mashed potatoes, and then those became potato pancakes the next day. You can also slice the taters suuuuper thin and like layer them and make a pretty lil flower with spices and bake it, you can make hashbrowns, pretty much anything you can think of lol
Fall break fell on Thanksgiving, so that night I "splurged" and bought like a little wedge of some good cheese and used the last of the milk to make a sort of au gratiny dish. It slapped :)

Aldi is the GOAT of grocery stores and funnily is related to Trader Joe's, another popular grocery store. The German Albrecht brothers split the Aldi business into to two, North and South in the 1960s over a dispute on whether to sell smokes 🚬in their stores. As a result Aldi North operates in America as Trader Joe's and Aldi South is just Aldi.

I'm older than primordial ooze and I know a lot. I paid off 2 houses really early and retired at 53. That's shelf stable milk they preserve it somehow. Yeah the frozen stuff got all tricky with more than $1.25 items. I pulled my hand back too. Here's some of my tricks. We've mostly only gotten Asian food at restaurants. Everything else I can make cheaper at home pretty much. I get one large entree and it comes with a big thing of white rice. I put 3-4 cans of drained beans and I have beans and rice all week to add to meals like cheap as heck little burritos and quesadillas'. I then take the hot entree and pour it over 3 bags of DT veggie blends ( pepper stir fry ) and that turns a tasty entree into all week long ( for me and my even older husband ). That way we can eat out sometimes but I bring it home and we stretch it. I ate enough pasta and macaroni and cheese growing up I can barely look at it now. My sister in law recently took me to Red lobster. I'd filled up on the cheesy biscuits and my salad and took all the rest of it home and I added broccoli and carrots ( frozen of course ) to all that linguini and made 5 count em! 5 freezer plates. I know not everyone's as old and cant hold as much as they used to like us but a little veggie adding works for a lot of things. I took stroghanoff hamburger helper, used half the meat I had then set one of the packets aside, there's too much salt in it anyway. Later, with the other half of the meat, I put a whole bag of egg noodles and that sauce packet beefed up with canned mushrooms. A can of little green peas in there extends it too and then vegetables is fun. I did that as a poor as heck kid and all my married life too. YOU HAVE THE CUTEST PERSONALITY! Enjoyed ur vid very much. Save on girrrrrrl!!

Aldi is amazing! That's where i shop mostly cuz of how cheap everything is. It is pretty hit or miss tho, certain things I just will not get there. The produce usually does not last long for me, but idk if that's a skill issue on my part, or the produce's part.
Also did you do any calculatin' on the price per oz/etc?

@5:52 In Europe we dont just vacuum pack our meats/vegatables but instead the packaging is filled with a mixture of gasses to replace the air and slow down the growth of microbes.
A lot of the time the packaging looks slightly bulged as you point out, I generally look to see if the chicken looks "slimey" instead of juices running freely as a indicator of how fresh the chicken in the packaging is.

You made shopping fun again. I have shopped Aldi for 30 years. Well Dollar Tree too. Dollar Tree has a few items that are cheaper than anywhere else I go, but if I could only shop one store, it would be Aldi. All one needs to do is watch adds/coupons and stock up whenever possible on your best items. For example, Kroger this coming week will have a 5lb bag of long grain white rice for $2.99. Meijer last week had 5oz bacon wrapped pork filets for $1. Of course it is helpful to have all 4 of the stores I mentioned within about a mile from my residence and I literally drive by all of them when I am out.

My go to 'cheap' meals or meals that I can get multiple servings from; 1)Ramen of course 2)Chili 3)Spaghetti 4)Soups, especially Cabbage soup (you can get a head of cabbage for about 3 dollars and a pack of onion soup for about a dollar and have a pot full of tasty soup, which lends itself well to adding almost anything you want into the soup like onions, garlic, tomatoes, broccoli)

My mom used to take me to aldis when I was a kid... I'm 38. It's funny to see people just now discover it. Now they have organic and gluten free options... that was not the case when I was a kid... it was always the cheap ingredients, full of sugar stuff.

Aldi rocks. When I first moved out on my own I used to manage to feed myself entirely on things that required little to no cooking for like $30/week (though this was over a decade ago) so I could spend all my free time and money on more important things like partying lol.
If you're trying to eat a high protein diet and are struggling to afford whole foods from regular grocery stores it's amazing. Only thing is you can't really buy produce in small amounts it's all bags like those potatoes, which is usually overkill for stuff like onions.

Here in the UK we like to refer to the middle of Lidl, which also applies to Aldi. Both stores are German in nature and while the groceries are massively cheaper than elsewehre, the deals you get on the centre aisle are madness. You need a gas fire barbeque, how about a chainsaw, flippers and a snorkelling mask, what about a counter top grill, blenders and a motorcycle battery for like 50 each, check the middle of Lidl/Aldi.
