    It's nice to see the younger generation is able to talk openly about these things and actually get therapy.
    Our parents thought sending us to therapy reflected a failing on their part so many I grew up with never learned how to deal with things in a healthy manner.
    Thank you for mentioning guys can struggle with this, too. We can't be "scrawny" or "tubbos" so we get it on multiple fronts to look & act "like a man", especially as teenagers who don't know better.

    I think my best advice with binge eating or any eating disorder is to realize it takes a lot of time and work to overcome. It’s rarely a habit you can kick in a week. If you can work a little more on mindset shift and learning about nutrition (meal prepping if you can). One day you will have a sudden realization of how much better your relationship with food is and how far you’ve come. You may still have bad days but you’ll start having more good days than bad days and remember you can always “reset” the next day and eat normally like nothing happened. Also don’t deny yourself food you love or eat food you hate bc it’s “good for you.” If you want ice cream, have ice cream just get a smaller scoop and don’t get a giant potter of it so if you binge it isn’t as much.

      I agree to a certain extent! Meal prepping doesn’t help or deter binge eating at all - I don’t self-sabotage myself & my goals solely due to hunger alone.

    • @Emelia39
      @Emelia39 11 місяців тому +3

      @@patricia__alves_ I don't think meal prepping is the absolute key to ending it, but it does help me bc I get triggered by thinking too much about food, so the less time I spend thinking about it (e.g. cooking, trying to figure out what I want to eat), the less likely I get stressed and fall into disordered patterns. That being said, there is no one size fits all with recovery and it's about finding something that works for you bc EDs are so diverse. Hope you're doing well!

    In general, reducing my carb intake (significantly but not drastically) as a person who previously had an unbalanced, 90% carb diet has almost gotten rid of my emotional/binge eating. Getting my macros in balance and reducing the amount of breads and sweets in my diet has helped me relearn what hunger and fullness feel like and stop using food as a stress cope. I eat the same amount of calories as before, but in healthier portions and made up of more whole foods , fat, and protein… don’t have those emotional sugar crashes that make me want to eat an entire loaf of bread in one sitting anymore

Yesterday I got the urge to eat ice cream and ate the whole container. In my mind it makes me feel like I’ve ruined all the hard work immediately. That's a real video, Patty. I've had issues with diet due to all the social reasons you listed and due to ADHD. Dopamine-seeking through food has been like a drug for me throughout life. The piece of advice that you mentioned about timing meals has worked best for me. Basically setting myself up to not ever feel hunger throughout the day. Therapy taught me not to treat myself like a piece of shit when i fail. Instead of spiraling down into an existential depression and ennui, I catch myself and begin the climb up again. But that's like a muscle you train - it's hard to do at first when you're used to tearing yourself down all the time. I'm still not perfect at it, but I'm working up all the time.

      ADHD has a statistically significant relationship with obesity, and like you said I think it's related to dopamine seeking. Not getting mad at yourself when you fail is certainly a crucial step towards building yourself up to succeed.

    This video came just in time! I've decided to go on a diet, but I was worried about the triggers. It is actually one of the most genuine and helpful videos in my opinion... very realistic! The tips come from experience, and I love the encouraging tone in her voice. Now, I'm really curious about how she eats when going on a vacation, and it would be great if she spoke about that in another video. Keep up the good work!!

    • @theleanbeefpatty
      @theleanbeefpatty  11 місяців тому +29

      Thankyou manar! Actually about the vacation question: the majority of the time in my day to day life, I eat a moderate diet where I don’t track anything very strictly. Sort of like intuitive eating with a bit of guidelines. It’s quite rare and not for extended periods where I’ll strictly do anything (but if I want to reach a specific goal that requires me to do that, I’ll do that. Not being unrealistic in my expectations tho ofc). Then when I’m on vacation, ideally I’d be in one of my normal moderate/intuitive periods and just be like that on vacation, but if I’m not, I don’t like to ruin a potentially once in a life time experience with a diet. Personally, I think that has the capacity to be more negative overall. So I would go off my diet, keep in mind some general concepts like: if I eat these 5 very rich and filling foods I’m going to feel sick, but if I have two now and two tomorrow, i won’t feel sick…I’ll do something like that. And when I return from my vacation, if I want to return to my diet rather than my normal, homeostatic lifestyle, I’ll do that. Hopefully that made sense 🙏

    A good mind healthy thing to do is to stay creative, like patty said, drawing, painting etc. Other things like sewing, maybe even decide to dedicate you’re time to that one thing you’ve been putting off, like laundry or doing some yard work. Deep cleaning your bathroom. Pretty much anything that needs your full attention. ( getting those things done will also make you feel better in general). Personally I love getting lost in drawing or sewing.
    I really struggle with staying consistent with nutrition so thank you for this video. It makes me feel less lonely seeing that

    I've struggled with binge eating my whole life, and it's definitely a constant battle. First off, thank you Patty for the way you addressed the subject gently, it's one I'm sensitive about. Because as I'm sure you understand having faced your own dysfunctional relationship with food, shame is often used and rarely helpful. I knew I could trust you to keep it kind.
    I'll add a few things to the list of coping skills that have helped me. Dancing around my apartment singing along to songs I love, making a hot cup of tea, spending time with people who make me laugh even if its just online, and repeating kind mantras to myself.
    I appreciate these vids more that I can express in words, it's so important not to feel alone in the struggles we face. Nothing but grateful love here ❤

    As someone still in recovery from disordered eating habits, distinguishing between actual hunger signals and emotional or bored eating has been one of the things I've had to work on longest. Still not perfect, but like you said I found that not shaming and punishing myself when I do emotionally eat and simply moving on with my life has been so helpful. That, and knowing that I have certain trigger foods (eating chips in moderation will never be a strong suit for me).

Until I went to the doctor for a regular physical last month and saw my weight. The nurse actually asked me to remember it for her to record it later. I lost 20 lbs without trying to diet. And since then my past ED brain has been working hard to try to get me not to eat anything “bad” to mess up and gain the weight back. Especially since I’ve been very stressed recently. I’ve been working out consistently 6x a week for the past year and a half now and I’ve lost about 60 lbs thru lifting and cardio. I finally started feeling better mentally and physically and your videos and other UA-camrs were a big inspiration for me. But two weeks ago I ended up getting into a major accident and requiring surgery and a few plates and bunch of screws in my bones and now I’ve been emotionally eating junk food while not training. I’ve been feeling really guilty about it and bored eating a lot. I don’t feel as athletic or strong as before since I’m mostly just laying in bed recovering. what's helped me a bit is that if I feel that "snacky" urge come on, to replace my snacks with some healthier ones (apples and peanut butter has been my go-to!). I feel like the healthy ones tend to fill me up faster, plus, oftentimes if its emotional, Ill be craving something specific (like chips), and only having the option of the healthier one will put me out of the mood to binge-snack :P Ive also found that the cravings for chips and candy tend to go away if I can get through the first week or two.
      and if it turns out I really did need a snack, then ill feel full and satisfied instead of bloaty!
