What you said about the more you have to move stuff around to get to a tool, the less likely you are to use it...spot on. Great vid.
I'm glad you mentioned the regrets about the 6" jointer. I keep scouring the ends of the internet on info or advice on these and planers. You have a nice shop setup.
Great tour Matt! Thanks for taking the time to show us around. Caught a couple ideas that I can use in my 1/2 garage shop. Thanks again!
Looking at all the small shops on UA-cam makes me thankful for my 24 x 30' garage, even WITH my wife's car parked in it. :) THanks for the video!
You have packed a tremendous amount of equipment into a small space, yet made it functional. Great job.
Great video, I'm planning my small shop and I can't say how truthful you are with everything. Thanks for the great vid, subscribed!
Great video, thanks! It's nice to see someone with a small shop almost identical in size to mine and see how well you've laid it out and how you make all the tools work in such a confined space. I've got some good ideas to go implement! ...and maybe a couple more tools to buy...
Excellent tour, the evolution is great to see. I've been watching your vids for a bit and your on-cam presence is progressing nicely. I really like seeing your honesty on what's not working and your regrets... It's a "real world" view of how an evolution occurs, not everything is simple and easy. Keep up the good work.
+WF Castro
Thanks, it's something I'm constantly trying to improve upon. I feel like I've definitely gotten better in front of the camera!
Great use of what space you have Matt, and some good ideas for saving floor space and the workflow.
+GuysWoodshop Thanks Guy!
What a clear, relaxed, almost faultless presentation. Thanks.
+jubusmaximus
Thank you!!
Honest and humble a rare commodity. Thank you for the information.
great layout. I love to see others make use of a small shop too.
+Dyami Plotke
Thanks man, you got a nice shop yourself!
Lots of good lessons learned and ideas in this video. I appreciate your insights on setting equipment up in a modestly sized space. Good video work too. Thanks!
Hi Matt, I really enjoyed this video. Great info! I'm in the process of laying out my own woodshop and you gave me some very good ideas for large tool placements. I also love the fact that you're a down to earth guy and didn't feel the need to "produce" a video with a distracting soundtrack and video and caption effects! Cheers!
Thanks for invalidating any excuses I may have had with my shop. Great video!
hahaha, thanks!
I enjoyed watching your entire video. I look forward to adding some French cleats as part of my storage solution. Nice shop. Thanks for sharing your tips!
Thanks for sharing your shop with us Matt.
+Rag Tie
Thanks for watching!
Matt, very informative and especially helpful you highlife positive and negative issues you have dealt with. I’m setting up more of a hobby shop but will use your advise for a similar sized space! Thank you for diverting some future frustrations for me!,,
Thanks for taking the time to do this. It is very helpful getting real word tool opinions.
+Kent Johnson
Awesome, you're welcome!
Great video!! Thank you very much!! In my garage/shop...I also make use of that space above the garage door. Course that might already be on your mind. Thank you again!!
Enjoyed your down-to-earth video. Lots of thought went into your layout. Liked and Subscribed.
great video, lots of helpful tips---Thanks!imagine my surprise when you opened the cupboard to reveal the Tidepods! lolbet you didnt see that one coming when you made the video!thanks again for the good info and the chuckle.
Great space utilization Matt. I feel you there, my shop is a spare bedroom in my apartment!
+Justin Depew
Wow, that has to be tough!
Thanks for the tour, Matt. Nice layout of your shop.
+Steve Collins
Thanks Steve!
Hello Matt,
This was an excellent video. I have a shop that's a two car garage but have poorly used the space. you've given me some food Ideas. Time to rework my space. Thanks
Great workshop! Thanks for taking the time to do a tour. Subscribed!
After watching this video I must say that I won't be able to complain too much about my own shop size. You did a excellent job at maximizing and making your layout work for you. Maybe I should look at moving some things around in my shop again! thanks for sharing this!
+Tomy Hovington
Thanks Tomy!
Great tour, shop and ideas. I'm getting ready to begin my shop build and i now have a few new ideas!!
+Tony Ozimek
Awesome, man! Thanks for watching!
Great Video. Nice and detailed gave me lots of ideas for re-organising my one car garage. Said goodbye to my sportscar this year and now ride a bicycle (E-bike conversion). Fitter, happier and healthier and more money for tools. Oh! man I shouldn't have said the more tools part - giving myself ideas...........!
Thanks Matt - perfect timing on this one, I've been doing a lot of head-scratching on how to better organize my own one-car garage workshop.
+Dave Henderson
Awesome man, glad it helped!!!
Garbage can/drill press idea is genius!!! LOL, never would have thought of that, well done sir!
Great video. I am trying for 3rd time to set up a shop, new job, new location. My shop is an almost identical space. Looking forward to implementing some of your experience into my shop.
Great ideas for the small shop, Matt. Thanks for the tour.
+Curoi MacDaire
Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed the tour. You are a natural born instructor. It definitely gives me some ideas on how to set up my own limited garage space. Thanks.
I ended up converting an old shed. ua-cam.com/video/mSMR_Rfuikg/v-deo.html
Thanks for the shop tour,
It's nice to see small shop layouts!
+Hey I'm a Maker
Thanks for watching!
Great video, good to see you can talk. Just subscribed, I saw you on Jay's channel. I have a narrow shop(12') and made the mistake of putting (free) cabinets along one wall. Now I only have 10' of width. I'm over 60 and still learning. Keep up the good work.
Nice shop Matt. Lots of projects to keep you busy.
+parra J
For sure!
Great to see a small space set up well!
+mike walls
Thank you!
I really like how neat your shop looks. Being a peg hook aficionado, I can never remember what goes where. But everything I see in your shop looks stowed away beautifully. Good job.
+metamech
Thank you, I try to be as organized as possible.
Loved the video. You and I are in the same boat. I enjoyed the video!
Nice tour Matt. Making use of the space for sure.
+Mike Kapotsy
Thanks Mike!
He Matt ! Thanks for that Workshoptour, it helps me a lot to find ideas for my own little space :D
Really appreciate this shop tour. Just moved into a apartment with a 10'x23' garage I'll be turning into a shop and I'll be using this as a starter layout to get my shop up and running.
Awesome, glad it helped!
That garbage can underneath the drill press is your top moment of the genius brain at work.
Very good layout! Nice job, looks very functional ; )
Thanks Matt, Good information, nI am in the process of putting my shop together in 1 stall in my garage, which happens to be 12'X24'. Your inside is very helpful. thank you.
Felix
Thanks man, glad it helped
Hey Matt! Your shop is almost exactly the same size as mine! So far, I don't mind it. It forces you to use the space more efficiently and to think about where things get stored.
Matt, thanks for the video. It was truly inspiring; I was worried about space and what size shop I needed and could afford. I have been taking everything out of a storage building to work for a while and I have gotten to the point where It has become too much of a task to drag out and set up everything outside and then return it until the next day. I know now that I can survive in a smaller building than I expected.
+Troy Scott
Awesome man, glad the video helped. Thanks for watching man!!
great use of space, great video too!
Nice video, calm clear tour. I've got an even smaller shop, I have a 10 x 10 and a 10 x 16 Tuff sheds. I'm currently installing a French Cleat system so every tool has a home and I can find it.
I used a shed as well! ua-cam.com/video/mSMR_Rfuikg/v-deo.html
Nice work man. Thumbs up. Looks like you've got plenty of stock! Keep posting vids.
Looks great. We have to work with what we have. Sign of a good craftsman. Keep it up.
+jonh walsh
Thank You!
great video I've taken alot of your advise for my smaller shop.thanks alot Lane!
+Brian Marcum
Awesome! Thanks for watching man!

+Joe basementwoodworking
Thanks Joe!!!
Nice and and well laid out. I also mount most of my heavy machines and benches on wheels. Keep the shop more "fluid" as I change my mind from time to time. Great video thanks..well done
+Larry Smith
Thank you and thanks for watching!
MATT VERY NICE SHOP LAY OUT .LOVE THE SHOP LAY OUT.FROM DOUG IN HOUSTON
Thanks for the shop tour. I got a couple of ideas for adding to my shop.
+shadetree1010
Awesome!!
Thanks for some great ideas Matt.
VERY NICE LAYOUT WELL ORGANIZED
As I was watching your video, I looked at my drill press and thought, "that's a really ingenious place to put my trashcan". Saved just a bit more space in my cluttered, unorganized shop. Quite a few other tips I plan on borrowing. thanks for this vid.
+Shane Betmarik
Awesome man, thanks for watching. My small shop space seems to have made lots of people feel better about their small shops haha.
Enjoyed the video keep up the good work I have got to get me that vacuum system
Nice video! Very good use of space. It looks as smart small WoodShop. I'll try to make the same next spring. Thank You!
+Александр Матвеев
Thank you, glad you got some ideas from it!
I have the exact same sized garage. I'm just starting out with woodworking, and I'm laughing at the situation right now. Spent all day moving crap from the garage to the basement, and it still looks crowded with just a rolling chest, air compresser, shop vac and half a table saw (the good half) on the floor. I needed this video to get my head screwed on straight, and face the coffin that is my new workshop. Thank you, and I can't wait to get this thing together one piece at a time.
Good Video, liked your tool wall with no base freeing up floor space. Band saw and thicknesser is a good move. Liked a lot about what you have done. All I would say is don't leave jobs hanging. You only have to pick one of your unfinished jobs and get it done. You would feel so much better creating better space, giving drive to the next single unfinished project. An educated guess, you are going to have a workshop most of your life, smooth out the wrinkles now and let them not become bad habits. You are an exceptionally good craftsman so let me see more videos where you are driven by the love of the craft to produce, educate, inspire and most of all enjoy what you do.
great video and nice little shop.
+Charles Holland
Thanks Charles!
great shop tour Matt
+Moy perez woodshop Thanks Moy!
Good job Matt and I've enjoyed your work with Jay Bates! Ron, Littlewierdshop
+Ron Martina
Thanks Ron!
Great shop! Thanks for the tour.
+J.D. Ransom
Thanks J.D.
Hopefully those clamps are on the wall soon. Nice shop!
Nice looking shop. wish mine looked that good LOL thanks for sharing
Nice shop tour. "Moving machines to use them", I feel your pain, lol. Great tips, I'm planning to move out of the basement this year.
+Paul Buckel Jr
haha, it's definitely a pain. Hopefully to a bigger shop right?
Yes! Especially headroom... Not for me, it's for the plywood.
Lots of helpful tips, thanks!
Great video. Thank you. I’m I’m the process of putting together a small wood shop in the exact same size garage.
Me too! I converted an old shed. ua-cam.com/video/mSMR_Rfuikg/v-deo.html
Matt,
Thank you for the tour. I too have a small shop. I am always in the process of moving things and trying to come up with better storage. You may consider the clamp rack built by Norm Abram. I Built one and I really like it.
+Tim Hoff Thanks Tim, yeah I need a clamp rack badly!
Its compact but very nice shop Matt....thanx for the tour.
+Don Motz
Thanks Don!
Nice tour! Thank you!
Don't forget that you're ceiling is the most underused space in your shop. Ladders, sheet goods and anything that you seldom use that's long. Your young. I'm still buying equipment then find that I was to cheep and really it would not have cost that much more!
Thanks Matt your using your shop to the max. Remember over build. Wobbling surfaces make for accidents! Good luck
+vernon slatton
Good points!
Shop is pretty nice! If you ever need more wood storage do it above the garage door railing.
This was a good watch! Rather than just "here's this tool, here's that tool", you made this video pretty informative! Thanks for that. Definitely good food for thought as I'm currently trying to plan a more optimized space in my own shop. You ever think about rolling carts so you can extend your workspace out into the driveway or carport while you're working? I know for me, pulling a few rolling tools into the driveway/yard help sometimes.
+Carter Wilson Workshop
Thanks man, yeah, I have definitely kicked around moving some stuff outside and working on the nice days!
I agree with your comment that if you have to dig a machine out, then you're less likely to do some woodworking. I once had my shop in the garbage and utilizing mobile bases, but since moving to the basement with ample room I now enjoy having all my machines immediately accessible.
+Jerry Herndon
Yeah, it makes a huge difference having them available for use. Congrats on the basement shop!
Very nice shop tour Matt. I just sub'd to your channel. You have an excellent channel. Cheers from Ontario Canada
+MacTech007
Thank you!!
Nice tour! I spotted several items from Mississippi... :)
+Stone and Sons Workshop
Yep, I even have your heart!!!!
Matt, Thank You So Much for the tips of setting up a small functional shop! I thought my space was small! Like your shop, mine is my attached garage. However, I do have 360 sqft (15'x24'). My first mistake was lining up most of my power tools (drill press, scroll saw & bench grinder, router table, dust collection unit, chop saw and bench sander, etc) along the studded wall of my space, which is 3 walls. My shop roof pitches from 20' down to 6'. This summer, I want to reverse the layout. Have all of the power tools along the block wall and storage along the 3 studded walls. My next issue is ample electrical power in the shop. I have a neighbor that is an electrician and will do the job for beers and food. My deal with him is that I will run all of the wiring and install all of the switches & outlets. The one thing I won't do is, tie into the house existing electrical system. I also love your creations for wall storage units! That is what inspired me to reverse my shop layout. Let's face it, it's easier to mount stuff to wood studs instead of a concrete block wall. I also have a You Tube Channel that I just started about 8 months ago, "The Wood Butcher". Believe me, I will be providing links to your channel. >>Marcel...
+The Wood Butcher
Thank you, glad you got some ideas!!
Nice tour. Shops are always evolving aren't they! But great suggestions and ideas for my shop.
+Jeff Jones Most definitely man!
Wow< my shop is just a wee bit bigger than yours, but I know now how poorly its laid out. Spot on with the table saw, mine is in the middle and constantly in the way. I was saddened when I google your sweet planer, about $2500 out of my budget, but one can dream. I'm in the process of trying to say goodbye to my old, old radial arm saw, to be replaced with a mitre station.
So thanks for the video, and your laid back, down to earth manner. '>)
Great tour, thank you!
Nice video Matt. You seem like a very sharp guy with your organization. The only thing I disagree with is your comments on wanting an Incra tablesaw fence and using it with the router. The reason is that if you get the Incra tablesaw fence you will have to move your tablesaw back to the middle of your shop because it requires so much clearance to the right of your saw. You don't need that much rip capacity if you have a tracksaw. I find that I never need more than 20 inches of rip since I got the tracksaw. In fact I wish my sawstop had less clearance so in can get it closer to the wall. I wanted an Incra tablesaw fence a few years back, but I'm glad I waited. I will post a video on my workshop layout in a few months to explain it. Your video was great. Thanks.
Thanks man, yeah several guys pointed that out to me! It does suck that it takes up so much room. I love the way the incra fence works!
I would put your Band saw against the back wall where your router tables is than line up your router planer along that wall in roll them out when needed.
You could even use your router table as a out feed possible if you raise it up or lower it to match your saw. Or put bad saw where jointer is and jointor where router table is and router table where band saw is but against the wall. if you do longer handsaw rips. I thought I had a small shop you really need to maximize that space. What is the resaw on your Band saw it looks over 12inch?
+Sean Morgan
I'm pretty happy with the current setup
Nice video. Great use of space. My wallet got lighter looking at your Festool table.
+Chris Parker (CP Builds)
Not as light as mine ;)
+Matt Lane Hahaha true that. That sir earned you another sub. Us tall woodworkers need to stick together.
Chris Parker hahaha, for sure! Thanks man.
I like it!!
Great video, thanks for posting!
+Peter Hladky
Thanks man!
That dust collection is huge
Nice shop. Good use of space. I guess a person has to decide what you really want to be able to do in the shop. I've had to put my welder away to conserve space.
Hey u got your voice back 😛. Great episode wit JB! 👍
+SAWBLADE PROJECTS
haha, yep! Thank you!
I have a small shop too. Got some good ideas from your video. Thanks
+Mike H
Awesome, thanks for watching!!
Yes the tools charged and plugged in ready to use are used much more often (In my shop the Palmsander, Jigsaw, Cordless Drill and Router).
+norm1124
That's probably the case in most shops!
I appreciate the ideas.I have trouble with Screws and hareware storage. Got any?
Cool shop man! Where exactly in Tennessee are you based? Would love to do some kind of collaboration with you!
I am in southern middle Tennessee, about 2 hrs south of Nashville
Nice! I'm over in Asheville, NC, so not too far away. Let me know if you'd ever be interested in collaborating on a video.
Thay close? I'd Love for you come to my shop in Camden TN. I will feed you well. :) When can you come?
+Matt Lane, Im 16 years old, self taught. My woodshop is 108 sq.ft.. I have a Dewalt Radial Arm Saw, Craftsman 10 inch bandsaw, Shopsmith Mark V, 1973 Craftsman 10 inch table saw, and a Delta 10 inch compound miter saw. All in 108 sq. ft.., I have 36 sq. ft. of assembling space and space that im free to move around in.
wow, that's awesome man, Kudos to you!
+Matt Lane, it would be an honor if you liked my facebook page, your such a cool dude. facebook.com/SvensCustomWoodworks/
Thank you for the great tips
Matt you still can use your 25" incra L.S.router fence on your table saw by buying the rails from Incra that are made for it. It would still give you 25" rip capacity and if you move your system to the right it would give you even more rip capacity. Except for the room t takes you will love the reputability it gives you. Plus spoiling you. Hope this helps. Bob.
+Robert Potter Thanks, after looking more into it, I'm not sure it will work in my small space!
