    Very nice workshop.
    Not sure about England, but here in Scotland I was told when I converted my single garage to a workshop that I wasn't allowed to put in 'fixed' heating otherwise it would be deemed a 'room' which wasn't granted for in the plans. To make it a 'room' would have required full planning and for it to have more than a layer of kingspan and plasterboard to insulate it.
    Mobile/portable heating is allowed.

    • @monkeyboysworkshop
      @monkeyboysworkshop  Рік тому

      Thank you very much! To be fair I didn’t check haha but knew it was okay to install as I converted a friends garage a few years previously in to a room for their eldest son for when he was back from uni. In England you don’t need planning permission to change the garage in to a room, as long as the works are internal and there’s no change externally then you can do what you want basically. It’s a shame you have to get planning, portable heaters are expensive to run 🙈

    • @sean_mc
      @sean_mc 5 місяців тому

      @@iainmatheson5190 Unfortunately, you have to tell your housing insurance company/mortgage lender if you've converted a room because it affects the value of your property, otherwise your insurance is void, so you are forced to get an evaluation estimate done, which is then recorded. The local council can regularly check the current estimated valuation of your property and see if you are paying less tax than you should.

    Sam, your thicknesser jig that you show made from MDF, is it treated ? Varnished or waxed. I’m currently making a bench for my thicknesser that I mentioned to you on Instagram and not sure if to go with white melamine shelving or MDF like yours for the top surface.

    • @monkeyboysworkshop
      @monkeyboysworkshop  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Terry! Yes, I coat with a layer of wax every now and again which works really well but I am hoping to make a new version soon and was planning to make the top out of a melamine faced plywood. You’d obviously still have to wax it but I guess the melamine version would be a little more durable 👊🏻

    Great video, I think I'll just clone this for my single garage workshop 😂 A question though:
    How do you heat the shop and at what temp do you keep it in winter? Do temperatures ever drop below zero where you live?

    • @monkeyboysworkshop
      @monkeyboysworkshop  5 місяців тому

      Cheers! Haha go ahead and clone away 😜😂
      So I had a radiator installed (I can’t remember if it was installed before or after this video or not, but it’s behind the surface planer (aka jointer). Luckily we had a radiator on the other side of the wall so it was pretty easy to install. The temperatures do drop pretty low, no way near as much as the states mind you but as I’ve insulated the walls as well and so it doesn’t get CRAZY cold in there which is nice 🤙🏻

    1st one I've seen but an enjoyable video.
    I'm in the process of selling my Axminster professional scroll saw and looking to purchase an Axminster band saw but,, having seen your video am wondering if I may be better getting a table saw.
    I don't cut much sheet material so thought the band saw would be better, especially as it takes up less space and my garage is even smaller than yours lol?

    • @monkeyboysworkshop
      @monkeyboysworkshop  Рік тому +1

      Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it!
      Ah sweet, well it all depends on what you build, I don’t have a scroll saw as I don’t have use for it, even though it’ll be nice to have one haha But I definitely use my table saw more than my bandsaw and I don’t work with sheet materials either, the table saw is super handy and that’s also why I now don’t have a mitre saw because I use the table saw instead. So at the end of the day it’s up to you due to what you build which dictates what tools you think would be necessary ☺️🤙🏻

    I'm in the process of building my very first workshop and I am wondering about the floor covering 🤔 that inmind I see that you have put down the Penny matting, do you know what the thickness is that you have down plus how happy are you with your choice of flooring?

    • @monkeyboysworkshop
      @monkeyboysworkshop  2 роки тому

      Amazing, hope the build out is going well so far! I do indeed, if I remember correctly it was 3/4mm and very easy to lay and cut, I stuck it down with spray adhesive. It’s way better than standing on hard concrete (and easier to sweep sawdust too) but to be fair it could be better. It’s doing the job for now but in the future I may look at upgrading the flooring to something thicker and that’s better for my knees ☺️ But for the price it’s definitely worth it 🤙🏻

    Hi Monkey Boy, love you vlogs, some real nice pieces of furniture. I have a new white oak handrail for my next project and an engineered oak floor which I’m going to sand back. I’ve done a test patch out of site and it’s not far of the colour of the handrail, my question to you is two fold. 1) What Rubio colour would you recommend? and 2) can Rubio be used on an engineered oak floor?
    Thx Jay

      @monkeyboysworkshop  2 роки тому +1

      Hey buddy! Thank you so much, glad you like my videos 🤙🏻 Awesome, I do love me some white oak 🤤 Colour wise is totally up to you, but for a natural look we tend to use Rubio ‘Mist’, and then sometimes ‘Smoke 5%’. The colour ‘Pure’ (which is their natural colour, so don’t get confused between their actual ‘Natural’ colour sample 🙈😂) tends to make oak very warm. And you can definitely use it on floors as it was actually made for floors in the first place. Hope that helps dude 👊🏻

      I’ve insulated, plasterboarded and plastered the walls and ceiling (although ceiling has yet to be insulated) which has soundproofed the workshop somewhat. They’re attached using worktop connecting bolts, just like you’d find in a kitchen counter.
