Great video. I’m going full ocd on my shop and you hit the main points. Organize by function(includes workflow), modularity(includes mobility), and instant access (minimize drawers and cabinets). This is the philosophy that will govern my design.
So glad I found your channel. Subscribed and hit that bell! I have 150 feet of usable space so my tiny shop presents some challenges and it's very obvious that you "get it".
Chris, I've got a work bench that I built, that is very very similar to yours but i've really been struggling about where to put my table top planer. This video solved the problem for me. When I saw how you've situated your jointer, the light went on. I'm going to place it on drawer guides so that it can simply pull out when I need it, and then slide back underneath when I don't. Thanks so much!!
Andrew, it's an honor to help! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I'm personally planning to update my jointer mount in the near future. I recommend using double drawer glides for stiffness.
@@benchtopwoodworks Good idea on the drawer guides--it's funny I also had that same thought of double drawer guides while watching. I'm excited to build it. I went on and saw your Planer mount and I think that's how i'll do it. It's incredible. Thanks for making these videos, they're very helpful
Absolutely welcome. Your excitement about the builds is exactly why I keep working to share. Its an uphill fight for me with the video recording and editing. Thank you again for watching and best of luck with the builds
Believe me, that isn't a relatively small space. That's a nice spacious work area. Try working in my garage! I have about 12 feet by 7 feet at the most......and much of that is taken up with storage racking for normal household goods? I did giggle about put the machine near to where you store it......I only have to turn round, in fact, I have to move materials to get out tools. Nice video though. And I am very jealous of your space.
Thanks Rich I hope you found some useful tips for your space! This is by far my largest space yet, and don't worry, I fully realize and appreciate that I am spoiled in it. My actual workshop space is 8ft x ~14 ft (a single car garage bay). Clarifying, I was using the term "relative" as in proportion to what I can produce in the footprint and the number of machines in the square footage. I don't think I could condense it any more without losing full functionality from trade-offs for the number of machines/capacities of each. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!! I'll enjoy it a little extra for you this weekend! The main workbench or a similar layout might be an option for your space, it takes up just under the same size as your area. Parallel workflows and c layering deadspace are where it's at. It's hard to make a video that's useful for "everyone's shop situation" and that's what I'm trying to do/speak to in this one.
I really like the concept of your layout template. I'm moving into a new shop in the next few months and this will be very helpful. I can't seem to get the .pptx file though. Only the .pdf. Am I just missing it?
Thanks, it's a file attached to the pdf. Try this: 1. Open PDF. 2. Select "View" (menu at top) 3. Show/Hide 4. Navigation Panes 5. Attachments (paperclip icon) That should toggle the attached file bar and you should be able to see & select the PowerPoint file. Please let me know if that doesn't work for you, Denver
@@benchtopwoodworks Its still not working for me. I have no "view' or menu up top other than rotate download or print. I have tried opening it in chrome and explorer. Any ideas?
What you are viewing is likely a web-preview of the file. Try downloading it to your computer and opening from within Adobe or other PDF viewer. The editable .pptx is attached to the pdf. Try downloading a fresh copy. I updated the file on 10 JAN 2021 with images/instructions to help your situation. If all else fails, shoot me an email. I can send the PowerPoint file directly.
