Epiphone Les Paul 1960 vs PRS SE 245 vs ESP LTD EC-401 Guitar Comparison with Mesa/Boogie Stiletto
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 гру 2011
- This video is a guitar comparison between the Epiphone Les Paul 1960, PRS SE 245, and ESP LTD EC-401. These are some of our most popular set neck, single cut style guitars and range in price from $649-$799. Despite the similar design and construction methods, each of these guitars has a unique and specific tone and we hope this video helps you decide which guitar will be best suited for you.
The amplifier used is a Mesa/Boogie Stiletto ACE 2x12 Combo which sounds amazing!

PRS SE 245 the winner IMO.
Ouch...those EMGs were painful. PRS sounded the best all around.
I have the 401 and those damn EMG's are the reason I want to trade it, great for metal but that's it
@@stevenlandry3 EMGs are active pick ups made specially for metal. They’re high output so they catch every single tiny vibration happening on the guitar
I’d put the epiphone first because of that low warm tone it makes then the prs is next but that Ltd sounded like shit I almost got one instead of my epiphone but I’m glad I stuck with the epiphone after hearing that Ltd it was just to bright sounding it almost sounded like a strat
EMGs are high output. But those are probably the HZ version not the 81-85 models. And Zakk Wylde runs all of his stuff through EMGs. Blues to metal they will do it all.
This is exactly how anyone should compare guitars, please keep making videos like these :')
this was hands down the best comparison demo video I have ever seen. great job
This review is really nicely done! I love how they transition from one guitar to another letting you hear the samr playing on each one
LP has soul, PRS technically is the best
Andrew Zeleno in general Lp is he Best. Prs sounds thin for me.
Desmond Miles me too. Thin and very non LP sounding. Especially on the crunch lead.
PRS is known for their very sterile sound. You either like it or you don't. I prefer Gibby/Epi warmth.
@@tomm7354 BULLSHIT. PRS is FAR from sterile. EMG = sterile. *Get your hearing fixed.*
I think the amp is the star of the show here.
The guitars play part of it, they are mid range guitars, not bad at all, the worst would be the LTD do to it's active steril pickups only good for bridge position. Also a good guitarrist can make the shittiest guitar sound like gold, even on a bad amplifier.
I like the way you cut from the different guitars while playing the very same riff.
Maybe it's just me but the PRS makes the other 2 sound like Walmart Specials.
Excellent video Dan, thanks for taking the time to show us the tonal difference between these 3 guitars.
LTD's are usually very nice looking but a lot of people complain that they get fret buzz and thin sound.
Both the PRS and the Epi sound amazing but I still like the PRS better.
Thanks and cheers.
the best kind of reviews... you can really tell the difference. I like the professionalism, keep up the good work!
best comparison video ever..really thats how its done
agree
I agree. A perfect example of how to do a comparison video.
Hey Don, the most professional and helpful review I've ever seen. Sets a new standard man, thanks!
All guitar comparison videos should be done like this. Great job.
A lot of people want to hear how EMG's sound in comparison to passive pickups. Furthermore, these are three of our best sellers, and we sell way more LTD's loaded with EMG's as opposed to the Seymour Duncan version.
thank you for the comparison brother 🙏 💙 it was really helpful 👍
Excelent video. It really made the tone differences stand out and it gave a clear audible perception of how each guitar sounds.
The best video on youtube about sounds on different guitars
The LTD comes alive at higher gain but the PRS is best all around.
Great video BTW, I like how you played each guitar the same way. Too many comparisons for some reason change styles when they change guitars.
I agree, PRS sounds great - 10 years later LOL
This is the kind of comparison i was searching for
it really help me decide
Best multi guitar review I've seen. I just purchased the PRS 245 prior to seeing this review. I'm so pleased that I purchased it. It's clearly the best sounding guitar of the three.
Lisa Potthoff I noticed that too.. did you mod your pickup?
Not yet. Saving up to do that. Have you? What do you recommend?
Lisa Potthoff no, not yet a PRS user, I hope someday.
Lisa Potthoff
I too bought a SE 245. Don’t mod your pickups. They sound well just the way they are
Great review, I really like this format. Overall, I think each of the guitars hit its desired mark. The Epi had warm cleans and vintage crunch, the PRS proved itself a modern-voiced all-rounder, and the LTD stayed clear and balanced even under very high gain.
PRS wins, no doubt. The Epiphone is also good, but i don't like the LTD.
I agree, LTD I didn’t like. EMG pickups are very famous, however this time they lost.
Preferred the PRS overall, but the Epiphone was not actually that bad either. Didn't care for the ESP however.
It's because EMG. I miss the days when you could get Duncans in most LTD's and Jacksons. Yes, you can make EMG's sound good, but they never sound as good or diverse as a set of Duncans and it requires setting your amp EQ completely different so an amp set up using a guitar with vintage style passives like the PRS or Epi requires an almost complete reset of the EQ to get a similar sound from a modern active pickup guitar. That said, everything else about that price range of LTD's is pretty nice.
ibanezdudeck I just bought a EC-401 with Dimarzio pickups. It sounds great. The EMG's just arent made for this style of playing.
Adam Frazier
bought the same (401 with dimarzio), and clean sound is amazing.
ibanezdudeck If I get an esp I'm gonna rip out the emg's and replace them with SD blackouts straight away :/
steven poole you can get them with Seymour Duncan's already in them. Same price too
+haggertysmusic Thank you for doing a proper comparison! So hard to find videos that compare accurately this way. It's always "let's play this one" then "let's play this one" instead of streamlining. Please do more! Would love to see a comparison between an SE 245 and a custom 24.
The PRS was by far the best sound quality and the best looking IMO but I would need to play it before I decide. Great comparison vid OP!!
Great demo, very informative. The ESP clean sound is really bright and hi-fi compared to the other axes. I think I was most surprised at how good the PRS SE sounded. Its sounded much better than I expected, I think that 'straight out of the box' it has the best sound overall.
The Epi actually had more tone than I was expecting.
when it came to the clean sound. The ESP was the clear loser. EMG pickups in my experience are good for crunchy metal sounds and that's about it
I was surpirsed that the EMGs actually sounded ok clean when tuned to drop D.
Agree.
nice oun right there
LTD also fit the 401 with seymours or dimarzios, you dont have to take one with EMGs.
Very effective way of comparing the guitars. Good show! Sounds like I'm going with the PRS.
The PRS sounds like a cross between a Les Paul and a Strat. Just me?
Nope
khoirus sobri yea it’s a sharp full tone
THATS THE POINT. "Best of both worlds" Paul
Great démo with this 3 models in the same range of price,
my preference are for the épiphone for his warm vintage sound and the PRS for his bright modern sound, I think the ESP is a little behind because by his sound have less variation and seems to be less flexible in term of changement of character like sound
Thank you for this usefull test
jpascal
The 401vf comes with Duncans and it sounds incredible.
X2
A good friend lent me his SE 245 to test drive, because he knew I was looking for a single cut style guitar. It totally sold me. Grabbed me right by the boo-boo. I went out and bought one. Felt, sounded and played the same. Very consistent. Great freaking guitar for the money. I haven't tried the ESPs, but I've tried some Epi's and they didn't impress me at all, and certainly didn't grab me so hard I had to have one.
I'm glad I found this video, I'm comparing in order to decide which one to get as a beginner, definately prefer the PRS.
btw, this is the best damn demo i've ever seen comparing guitars. excellent job.
absolutely the best comparison I have ever seen/heard.
Excellent vid. Thanks Don.
Thanks for this video. Question...How do the necks compare as far as thin or chunky? I Love the sound of all these, but I'm a little partial to Epiphone, since I own and love my "Studio", in spite of the chunky neck being a little more effort to play, with small hands, compared to say a Fender strat neck. I don't have a lot of experience for comparison. I own a Fender Strat Copy. And I'm in the market for my third electric, before I ultimately add an acoustic to complete my collection.... But I like the LP sound, style, & look. Any suggestions, ideas would be appreciated. Cheers!
I thought the PRS was the most versatile and bright sounding (I like) with overall best tone..whether playing clean or with tons of gain .. also, PRS was the best looking of the three, imo.
PRS All the way!
That PRS is amazing. Just got an SE Paul’s Guitar and love it but I really want that 245 now
Probably already commented on, but the LTD w/Duncans is definitely a contender. I own EC401VF and it is a beast but also the sweetest cleans. It will never leave my collection.
Was a good vid that resulted in someone I know going for the PRS
Thanks for this comparison...really covered all the bases with this demo. For me...it's #1 PRS, #2 Epiphone, #3 ESP. PRS slightly warmer in all pickup modes than the Epi, and much more than the ESP, which sounded very weak/thin until a ton of gain was added. Not sure if that's due to the wood selection, pickups or both.
NIce comparison. This is what I want to hear, chords, tone and character, not a demo of the player's chops. Well done.
epiphone has so much more character and warmth than the others its unreal.
That Epiphone sounds nicer all around, the PRS second, and the LTD third and it sounds dry, it could be by the steril sound of the active EMG pickups on the LTD not sure.
Great review and demo bro.
Best comparissons ever - nice to watch !
Really like your comparative-explicative videos.
Thanx
What guitar should I buy the PRS SE 245 Standard Electric Guitar or the prs se 245 2017.
Excellent comparison. Interesting how the high gain riffs sound almost identical on each guitar. I think the PRS is probably the winner here, but for the money the Epiphone is a very close 2nd....
hey thanks bro! you helped me out well
im going with the ltd i think its a great one and if i dont like the ick ups ill change em
but i think i will love em
!!!
Vintage Sunburst. I'm getting a LP 1960 with that finish soon, it's beautiful!
I'm probably gonna get the esp/ltd one because it's best for metal
Another great video Don, I daresay the fingers have a big part to play in the sound. All 3 look like great guitars, I think the PRS has the edge for me!
Yes! Indeed. So clear a distinction. Nice amp too.
Excellent comparison! Thanks.
a very good comparison. thanks!
Very well done. The different guitars are played close enough together REALLY SOON to each other, fast changing. That is about the best possible way to get a comparison. Epiphone - Warm PRS - Warmer ESP - "Sharp" + Ready to Scream., EMGs really project. Epiphone sounds like its' daddy.
Hi, which guitar do you think has more of a Deeper low end tone , the 245 or the PRS SE Mark Tremonti Custom ? thanks
Great video. But I am at moment to choice one of those three. The newest 2019 version obviously.
@dbenc Yes, it was a 2011. Although I haven't seen one of the 2012's yet, I do believe they are the same finish.
Great review.Thx for that !
Epi, PRS, LTD. Epi has a fuller sound, more mid-rangey. PRS has a sharper tone, almost strat like. The LTD is just ... bad. Very trebley.
agree with you
Active vs passive pups is what your hearing. During high gain the EMG pups are going to be much more clear than the passive pups. Passive have a much brighter fuller sound on clean to mid gain tones. There are better all around EMG setups than the 81/60 actives. This setup is very metal oriented.
Great work!!!
Thanks for the info!
Many thanks .This is one of the most attractive sunbursts that I have seen .
I don't get this video. Why would they put a guitar with active pickups up against two with passives? They make Eclipses with passive pickups...
Carlos Santini
Yup
Why not?
Did you only use the Royer 121 for this demo? Great demo by the way!
I'd love to see this w/ the ESP LTD ec-401VF to see if DiMarzio PAF pups make a difference. The PRS comes out on top in this one.
If reshot (while I'm wishing for more wishes, why not add another one?), I'd love to see the comparison w/ a Mark V :25 and Thiele cab.
Great video, the PRS and Epi are awesome
Surprised you did not use the ec-401vf for this comparison...the pickups would at least match the other two guitars
Wonder video Don. You neglected to mention which one you liked the best. Which one feels better?
i m looking for a les paul style guitar for death metal drop tunings. i was going to buy an ltd ec 1000, but this review made me think about it. I really liked the warmth of epiphone (i m looking for a nice low end tone) , but on the other hand, that "treblish" sound of ltd is also necessary, if you want to cut through the mix or even in live situtation. What should i go for?
No routing was needed :) it fits comfortably. I agree with what you have to say but, well, the EMGs help get that warm clean tone, the twangy neck sound and also beautiful lead tones. I don't know much about anything else but, all that matters is the sound as you said. :) Brilliant stuff.
Brilliant!. Cheers for sharing.
Love the LP sound. Thanks.
hey i want to play soft but also very hard rock styles which one of those do you recommend??
i would go for the prs or maybe the ltd though .
i love heavy metal but also rock music like lenny kravitz or billy talent etc..
what is better for those styles?
Very interesting! Although its good to hear the crunch sounds demonstrated the amplifier does seem to even things so that the guitars are less distinguishable. On the clean tones the Epiphone and PRS sound almost the same, to my ear anyway, and the ESP thin and less attractive. All to his own of course. The lesson for me is always listen to the clean sounds before you buy! Nice demo!
Was this straight out of the amp? Or run through your computer then recorded? thx..
What is the particular name of the lovely sunburst that adorns the Epiphone please ?
Thanks for the tip ^_^
I'm using a Greg Bennett AV3 with the EMG JH set. That sounds brilliant. Those pickups are amazing. However, i'm not really sure about the standard models.
The se Prs kills em stone dead.
Which guitar would be the best for thrash/alternative metal? Can someone help
Hola, estoy por comprar una guitarra y estoy entre una Epiphone Les Paul Standard o una LTD EC 1000FM con picks Seymour Duncan. Que me recomiendas para Heavy Metal y Hard Rock
the plate immediately adds vintage sound. The EMG's are also active
Which of these should I buy, I play alternative rock with some heavy distortion. a fender telecaster gives? My song is like 3 doors down, nickelback, and sometimes blue and jazz. PLEASE HELP ME!
i think ltd les poul has the best sound .
I own that exact PRS and its awesome!
I liked the presentation.
Excelente formato de comparación
The ESP is shipped stock with EMG's.
What is the neck pickup of the PRS? Love that sound :D
PSR more versatile, very balanced tones.
No soul, too thick on the neck and too slack on the strings.....I owned one for a while.
not to sound like a prick, but pieces of wood do not have souls..and if they did I'm pretty sure a Chinese made Epiphone would be low on the list of the most soulful.
@@ZackRamsey14 + but they have heels.
No way.
@@duncandistortion nice one
Thanks for that info. I think the PRS sounds better than the other 2 in this video. PRS has such a wide price range I wouldn't know where along the line they start surpassing les pauls and others. Probably about in the $1500 range I would think.
I love the way ltd necks feel. I'm not a fan of high output pickups n really like that classic volume knob control on passive pickups
im looking for more of a modern rock/punk sound that can still sound classic rockish? and im debating whether or not to get the esp or prs. im playing on n orange crush 35ldx just if youre wondering
PRS wins.. clean and crunch sounds very nice.. thanks a lot man
Awesom playing man...
PRS clean
EMG crunch
gain channel: all are ok
haven't got that much experience with prs pickups unfortunately, only tried the HFS and the stock ones in the custom 24 (forgot the name, something containing 4 numbers and a slash like xx/yy) and liked the hfs a lot. but im currently very happy with the set of duncan full shreds in my schec, love their lead tone. wanna try a lundgren m6 though.
Both should work fairly well for rock and punk but I'd recommend the PRS, the main reason being the passive pickups will be more akin to what most rock bands use.
I have the ltd ec1000 (sunburst) I want to upgrade. Any suggestions of a better les Paul guitar?
