I had the good fortune to drive one of these from Cambridge to Rome in 2002. A truly magical experience. Would love to say the car was mine but I was just delivering it for a customer. 2 days of heaven followed by a £25 Ryanair flight back home. A once in a lifetime experience but memories that last forever.
@Leroy Brown The car belonged to a UK businessman that lived abroad in Asia. He used to fly into the UK regularly and insisted the car was made available for him at the airport. He didn’t want to use chauffeurs or taxis as he liked to drive himself. My dad worked for the company that stored it for him and he used to drop it off at the airport and collect it again when the guy flew home. On this occasion the owner was flying into Rome on business and asked for the car to be made available there. My dad asked me if I wanted to go with him and share the driving and needless to say I said yes, and then of course seized the opportunity and did all of the driving! We flew home after dropping it off at the airport and my dad went back to Rome just four days later to bring it back to the UK again. Great memories of the car, the trip and my dad. He’s 83 now, but we’ll have that memory forever.
I drive an 90's model Mercedes that's loaded with tech, and that's scary. There are the equivalent of 20 or so 90's computers that could go bonkers at any time. It's amazing that it all still works reliably.

I've always loved this period of Bentleys, the Continental R/T and Turbo R etc. Unlike today, where you see Continental coupes everywhere in London, back then Bentleys were a much rarer sight on the road. Plus, they still had that wonderful, understated, torque monster 6.75 V8 engine, with a single enormous turbo. I just think they were more special back in those days.

From my experience, it's not until you polish a car and get up close that you notice the true design, the subtle curves and lines etc. I hope to experience that someday as a Continental T has been on my shopping list a long, long time...
The final series models also had massive dual 4 piston calipers up front and single 4 pistons on the rear, I was a tech at Bentley at the time and back then they were over $300K US and the torque was incredible.
A sporting Bentley - almost as much class as Harry himself. Harry has owned almost every car worth owning (and kept a good few), but still manages to come across as down to earth and humble as one could hope for.
I've come to this video late.... well, very late, but I just had to share my experience of owning firstly a Continental R, and then a Continental R Mulliner (a LWB version of the T Mulliner). Simply sensational cars! Although my heart lies with the R because of its slightly more understanding nature as the R Mulliner goaded you into unleashing those extra horse's. They were both things of beauty, that only ever received admiring looks. I unfortunately let the R Mulliner go for one of the first Continental GT's and I remember saying to a person that came up to me when I was in the GT, that this was "the best volkswagen I'd ever owned"... I think that says it all...

These old 2 door Bentleys and Mercs were just delicious. A hark back to the heydays when these marques made seriously great sports cars....Seriously superb Grand Tourers these...
One of my favourite cars ever. I have an Arnage and the power deliver is incredible. Also the way it’s goes into and out of corners is soo surprising when you first drive one. You just don’t think it will handle the way it does. Mine has 603lbs ft and 501BHP. Just a lovely place to be in.

Nice hearing you talk about the family and the things they thought about the cars. I can imagine myself as a ten year old being impressed by those dials.
We just sold a Continental R and the dealership I work at in America, and I have to agree with what you said about everything feeling heavy. The chrome air vents, the door handles, the trunk cover, it is a true slab of traditional Bentley. That said, I personally think the generation after this specifically with the Arnage T is a much nicer driving experience, both as a luxury car and as an overtaking weapon that is still a traditional Bentley. What you said about the brake pedal certainly rang true, it is a bit unusual and difficult for me to get used to. But for £68,000, you are getting a lot of car.
This was the last of the hand built cars. It can’t really be compared with the VW Phaeton inspired Arnage. The weight, such as the bank vault doors, is part of its character, and its shortcomings are also part of its charm. But it has a presence, particularly the standard long wheel base R, which even the Rolls Phantom struggles to match. I love it!
Can you imagine the cost of maintaining a rare old beast like that with all it's complex systems, the breaks, suspension n motor with all those old seals, all packaged so you have to take the thing apart to get at anything, the aging electrics etc. It's a nice looking car, rare n beutiful but it might be easier in long run to put that elegant body on something more modern n cheaper, maybe a big old American drive-train. I know sacrilege, I'll go find a stake and some matches.
Lovely car. I can't afford one of those so I settled for a Bentley Brooklands R. Same engine less the turbo, similar interior with fewer dials but 4 doors. Kinda thirsty. Epic fun to drive.
When fifth gear reviewed it 22 years ago they said a block of 6 flats in greater London cost the same. Now one of those flats costs £250k or nearly 5 of these.
I’ve just come back to watch this again, because it pleases me. It’s a very relaxing video to watch. I will never get to experience that tsunami of torque that you talk about Harry, but you brought me as close to it as possible, without being in the car. . I love that phrase ‘mile muncher par excellence.’ That’s the car right there in a nutshell. Or maybe grace and pace but not so much space. Thanks Harry 👋🏼
This will alaways be my car, what a car still now-wish they still made them, pure brithish breed.last brithish engine fitted to bentleys,10 times tke torque of a ferrari Fxx,yes the interior no one make them that way, till date. Respect to that car. most beautifull car .....
Again an amazing review. I love Bentleys. Wow what a dash the crome wood and leather colour for me is just perfect. Lucky Harry being able to own one of these special cars. Good on ya!
Another great vid. Good to see you searching out genuinely interesting cars and not yet another biturbo V8 krautmobile, like many UA-camrs. Just grand. Thank you.
I remember watching a convertible blow up after fuelling up. I think the fumes were collecting in the trunk or top storage area & something ignited them. It blew out the top like a parachute & did some other damage. The mechanic that was in the car wasn't hurt though but for sure got his bell rung
I was fortunate enough (as a Chauffeur) to drive a client's Bentley Turbo RT Mulliner back in the late 1990's. It was an absolute beast :-) still the most powerful and exciting car I have ever driven ;-)
- it's like visiting your favourite Uncle even if you never had one, who tells you stories from the old days.. ace! ("oo there's a horsebox..can we overtake?")
As others have mentioned, would love to see you review a modern Brooklands, and perhaps an Arnage T as well, especially as they compare to this car. Would be great to hear your insights on them.
Magnificent motor car - the quality of the veneer, the leather, the chrome, the torque. Question: did RR/ Bentley just bolt a turbo to the old 6.75l V8 that had powered Rollers and Bentleys since the late 60s, or was it a redesigned lump? BTW I've still got dozens of copies of CAR magazine from the late 80s/ early 90s for which Rowan Atkinson wrote some terrific articles, along with such luminaries as LJK Setright, Russell Bulgin, Phil Llewellyn and George Bishop (RIP all of them), all of whom I'm certain Harry knew very well.
only problem with the interiors of 90's cars like this is the immense steering wheel boss for the airbag - so glad they figured out how to shrink steering wheel airbag modules since then.
that generation of Bentley didn't have anything as common as an airbag. A tiny butler lived in the boss and would jump out and brace 'sir' in case of an emergency
I love the old school elegance of the dashboard. That engine was always a behemoth with loads of potential, I could jump in it and travel the length of Europe! great video Harry and if you ever need an assistant them Pm me and I'll send you a copy of my CV!
Hah! Remember calibrating this. We had a gteat time developing that at Cosworth. The most you could do with the single turbo. We topped it later with the twin turbo. Good times.
Great video - you should also do a review of the more recent more powerful torque monster, the two door Bentley Brooklands. It doesn't suffer the rear legroom shortage and has over 725 lb/ft of torque I think
*"They just made it and then weighed it. Oh well, never mind."* Totally cracked me up! Thank you Harry for producing this increased number of videos lately, keep making them and we keep watching, keep subscribing!

“We’re doing a speed I can’t quite tell you...” ha ha ha. Brilliant, Harry, as always 👍
Youre still the best . Only watch youre car reviews. Thank you is all i can say!
I've been wanting to see a proper review of these for years! Thanks so much Harry! You rock!!!!!
I never get tired of watching this video. I really love this car.
I know exactly what you mean Jonathan and I completely agree 👍
I love how instead of a sat-nav screen you got eight gauges instead.
Harry missed the Morgan spotted at 11.27. You have well heeled neighbours Harry.
Good eye! I thought that was a fixed roof Morgan...same dark pallette.
This car really suits you Harry! This one video contains the best HM quotations to date.
One of the last leviathan’s from a time gone by great car as usual Harry great fun to watch.
The best content is here great work Harry
Rex Makin, the Famous Liverpool Solicitor had one of these. You would see him Driving to his office in Liverpool City Centre.
Thanks Harry, always look forward to your vids!
This will alaways be my car, what a car still now-wish they still made them, pure brithish breed.last brithish engine fitted to bentleys,10 times tke torque of a ferrari Fxx,yes the interior no one make them that way, till date. Respect to that car. most beautifull car .....
Another top notch vid as always, Harry. What a smooth high-class cruiser.
Again an amazing review. I love Bentleys. Wow what a dash the crome wood and leather colour for me is just perfect. Lucky Harry being able to own one of these special cars. Good on ya!
I love these old cabins without screens. It’s beautifully timeless
I remember watching the SC version rolling around topless in Marbella during my childhood. I still can’t believe how pretty it is.
This use to be my favourite car! I still find it gorgeous and much more elegant and beautiful than modern Bentleys.
Totally agree! I cannot understand why they look so fussy now in particular the frontal styling, with ghastly giant twin headlamps!
Another great vid. Good to see you searching out genuinely interesting cars and not yet another biturbo V8 krautmobile, like many UA-camrs. Just grand. Thank you.
I like your comment 👍
I've been in love with it since it came out. The ultimate blend of old school bespoke luxury and performance.
I remember watching a convertible blow up after fuelling up. I think the fumes were collecting in the trunk or top storage area & something ignited them. It blew out the top like a parachute & did some other damage. The mechanic that was in the car wasn't hurt though but for sure got his bell rung
"Nibble at the understeer" ...posh thing you say when you're nose deep in a road side ditch.
Great video Harry. I have a 2001 Azure. I love it!!
What a car!
Gorgeous car and video, as always. FYI: Panhard 24 CT & BT back in the mid-60's (65-67) also had 6 calipers
2002 Maybach too (all models normal & S)
Great video! How different from the Lotus Elise where they worked to add lightness with a design goal of 575 kilos.
Absolutely brilliant content. Could watch this stuff all day.. thanks!
Yes, Harry. I enjoyed this video. Thank you.
nice one Harry, love these cars
Definitely a throw back to the Pinifarina designed RR Camargue, which should have been marketed at the time as a Bentley in my opinion.
I was just hoping for this when I saw your review of the new Conti. Always loved this understated style
As others have mentioned, would love to see you review a modern Brooklands, and perhaps an Arnage T as well, especially as they compare to this car. Would be great to hear your insights on them.
Harry, what a lovely car! Dreamy! Thanks for sharing it.
"Can't tell you what speed we are at". Hooligan Harry rides again 😉
They did have the tech then for smaller airbag modules. These were just large.
More leather!
that generation of Bentley didn't have anything as common as an airbag. A tiny butler lived in the boss and would jump out and brace 'sir' in case of an emergency
Yes. I remember when the BMW Z8 came out. What a steering wheel for the time!
I love the old school elegance of the dashboard. That engine was always a behemoth with loads of potential, I could jump in it and travel the length of Europe! great video Harry and if you ever need an assistant them Pm me and I'll send you a copy of my CV!
Very classy car driven by Classy Harry. An enjoyment.
As always a wonderful video, and that’s a spectacular automobile!
