I finally got it in. Found out the bobbin case holder was screwed in backwards so the needle did not go into the bobbin case hole. Once it was doing that smoothly I tried to sew but it sews a few stitches then breaks the top thread. When I tap the bobbin case it does have give a little. Is that what's wrong?
I use a combination of all of those bobbins and cases on several machines yesterday I had a bent needle 💉🧵 I finally figured out why it would only do straight stitches it wasn't bent that much and it was hitting the top of the Bob and Chase on zig zag or any of the other decorative. I still like the flying shuttle machines like my Minnesota those bullet bobbins are cool especially to watch in slow motion
This was so helpful. I came into possession recently of this machine and built the table and motor. I noticed this same thing today was happening and didn’t know what to do. Thank you for doing this.

I have a class 31 sewing machine. According to the part numbers the bobbin case and race are for a 31-15. I was gifted a class 15 sewing machine but it had no bobbin case, hook or race with it. I removed the race, hook and bobbin case from my 15-91 and it does fit, but the race, hook and case from my 31 fits. Since both machines use a class 15 bobbin I'm wondering if that is the correct part for that 15 sewing machine. What's your opinion?
The answer is yes... and no... Yes, you can adjust the hook timing, and no, it's not as intuitive as you may like. I don't have a 31-15 to demonstrate on, but I can show on a 15-30 as the process is pretty much the same. Look for it in a future video.
Hi Jocelyn. I had a Zoom call just this morning with another 31-15 owner about the same thing! It could be a timing issue, but I fear the hook you were sold may be a 15 series hook and not a 31 - there is a (minor) difference, and while a 15 hook MIGHT work, it doesn't always. Hi Bob, I got it together and it sews now after I threaded the needle from left to right, but it bunches up underneath so what causes the thread doing that? Oh should the hook have any give?
If by "bunches up" you mean you're getting a rats nest of thread on the underside, that's an upper thread tension issue. Make sure you're threaded correctly and that the presser foot was raised so the thread is between the tension disks when threading.
The thread was loopy loose under so I tightened the top and it looked good on 4 thicknesses of plastic and I tightened the bobbin screw because it was very loose and thread did not syay under the plate. When sewing on rubber and plastic window it messed up. So you think it's a tension issue? Only problem is that I can't really practice on the window...it's like sewing on leather and leaves holes behind.
Also the short version manual I have is 8 pages and does not show how to thread. I go through one spool pin eye as a guide then wrap through the three hole guide, the discs, spring, horn hook, take-up lever, guides and then L to R through needle. I am missing the needle guide. I have it on order.
