Hahahahahaha! This old soldier spent a lot of years in the Army, during which time I became tri-lingual: English, Sarcasm, and Profanity! Oh yes... I spent 6 months at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base, so I have experience with drunk sailors!
Well it's interesting how UA-cam brings up videos that are opportune for what I'm working on. I already watched this video when it came out but interestingly it showed up when i opened the app today. I came across a 16-188 over the weekend which had spent some time outside and the race and hook had way too much corrosion on then I wanted to deal with. I also ordered from Cutex so will carefully check the fit up more closely.
I rarely have issues with orders from Cutex, so this was definitely an anomaly. The 15 and 31 series hooks look an awful lot alike, but they ARE different. It would be very easy to confuse the two...
Interesting, I have a 16-188 that’s almost back together. The hook and driver look almost identical. I must have about 1/8 inch or more of slop between the hook and driver. I got it not knowing if it worked or not, but comparing it to my class 15’s all that play didn’t seem right and watching this confirmed that. Great video 👍🏻 very helpful, Thank you!
Haha, Im going through a 31 atm so can relate to the profanity. I've fitted a rolling foot aiming at sewing upholstery/leather etc, am nearly there but still drops the occasional stitch. I suspect I've the same sort of wear you showed in the shuttle and race area. Sharpening the hook seemed to help, will have another look when I'm in the shop, then to take a chance with new parts or attempt to improve what's there? I'm guessing both options will involve further cursing lol. Cheers D
Hi bob Have been having a problem in replacing the shattle on my 31k15,or maybe the complete Race, and can I get the roller foot and bobbin threader for the same.my machine is over 50yrs but still smoothly function tis why I need these spares.
Yes, the race was the original and 111 years old! It was just worn out. I don't believe the hook was original equipment, but at least it was a SIMANCO part. Regardless, it fits well in the new race and will be just fine. The aftermarket replacement parts seem to be hit or miss sometimes. Upon detailed examination, I was sent a hook for a 15 class, not a 31, that's why that didn't work. The new hook driver too was for a 15. There are ever so slight differences in some of those parts, and It's my opinion that the shops on the Pacific rim either don't know or don't care about the subtle differences.
Hi Bob, I'm disappointed. When I saw the title to this video I was hoping that your ulcer might save me one, but no, you had to discover something else! ;-) I picked up a 31-K15 that was out of time. I checked the feed timing and it was good, then the needle/hook timing and it was off. It wouldn't even pick up the bobbin thread. By the time the hook came around it was an eight of an inch past and above the eye of the needle. I started to raise the needle bar BUT, before the hook arrived, the needle clamp struck the underside of the head!!. OK, I'd rotate the hook on the shaft as with other machines and surprise! I can't find a set screw at either end of the shaft. Can you help with this problem? I've been at it for a few hours and figure that there has to be a simple solution on this relatively simple machine. Ideas? Thanks, Chris
Hi Bob, thanks for replying. The problem was the nut behind the tool or is that the tool behind the nut? As it turns out as a pre-cleaning/servicing I tossed the old needle and afterwards replaced it but I grabbed one from my supply and when tat didn't work I then took one from the PO's stash. Turns out mine for my Juki was the wrong size, and his stash included more wrong sized needles. The correct needle and the timing has been successful!
hi bob. I have a 31-15 in my tailor shop has worked great for 50 years the other day my tailor broke a needle and the bobbin houng up i fixed it ,now when i go to saw heavy things such as plastic tracks for formal pants it constantly breaks the needle thread.and wont that me saw . any help. Thanks
Hi Joe, Make sure the retaining ring cap spring didn't get damaged. Often a needle strike will put a hole or dent on that. If so, replace it. You can get them here: www.vintagesingerparts.com/collections/singer-industrial-sewing-machine-parts/products/new-replacement-race-cap-singer-part-24414
Very nice machine!
It sure is. They were the mainstay of tailor shops for the better part of 50 years. I service a couple that are STILL in use at tailor shops locally!

Could you figure out what exaclt ycaused the looseness in the original parts?

111... Exactly.
