  • Actually not quite everything I wanted to say on the subject. TLDW, A 96-10 hook body is a drop in replacement for the OEM. A 20U shuttle will fit the 96-10 hook body and is cut for zig zag. Of course the 20U bobbin case fits the shuttle it was designed for. The final step is to either thin the tip of the locating finger or open the locating notch in the shuttle. This leaves you with an entire hook assembly built from current production parts that will work with standard 15x1 needles when the machine is adjusted to OEM specs.

    Thank you for taking the trouble to make this video and to share you knowledge. This information is not available from anywhere else and I'm obliged! You've answered all of my questions. If I ever need to swap out my hook assembly, I know exactly what to do.
    From what I can see of my 319, it's an extraordinary machine. Vastly underrated. At the moment, I'm using 15x1 needles in the original hook assembly and a bobbin case that has a wider and deeper opening and the machine sews beautifully. But again, if the time comes to swap out the hook assembly, I now know exactly what to do.

    I hear you can use a brother 3000 bobbin holder and it will let you use a 1x15 needle

      You can't use a complete 20u rotary hook assembly because the diameter of the shaft it mounts on is different. If your 306 already uses the open top bobbin case, a 20u case is a drop in fit, no modification needed. It has enough clearance to let you use standard 15x1 needles. If you want to use standard L class bobbins you may need to modify the bobbin winder or get an external winder. A split pin in a cordless drill will work.

    hey Joe, I I hate to be a pain but I still cannot find the shuttle and bobbin case for the conversion. Is there anyway to send me a link? I got the hirose hook assembly but i cannot find the other parts and I'm working on converting 2 of these. Thank you so much for your help

      Not a problem. The shuttle is the inner part of the hook assembly. It has the post the bobbin case latches onto. The bobbin case I use is for the Singer model 20u. The quality of the ones on ebay ranges from not bad to total junk though to be fair the new production Singer OEM cases aren't any better. I've had good luck getting them from Wawak. (wawak.com) STOCK # BOB2C If you want to use the bobbin winder on the machine get the Part # 55623AQ bobbins from Central Michigan Sewing Supply. You have to hold the trip lever up on the winder until they're about half full but they are the closest thing to OEM available anywhere.

      I'd love to help you out but I've moved to the Philippines. I brought my favorite 306 with me but had to sell off everything else before the move. I'm pretty sure the 319 and 306 use the same feed. You can find the 306 service manual online at www.manualslib.com/manual/364543/Singer-306.html It covers multiple models and is one of the most comprehensive service manuals I've seen from Singer.

      @@rndea100 I start out on my test treadle then drop it into a table with a servo at around 12:15. ua-cam.com/video/GFRIpDgtsGQ/v-deo.html Then follow up with a selection of light stuff in the same table. Seat belt webbing is incredibly tough but such an open weave it sews pretty easy if the machine can handle the heavy thread.

      @@joekahno can the bed of the sewing machine be welded the corner at the front snapped off the cover plate is holding it in place so it still works n=an sews well ??

    • @joekahno
      @joekahno  Рік тому

      @@rndea100 Yes, aluminum can be welded, usually with better results than cast iron. Unfortunately, anyone competent to do the job will probably want more than the cost fo a new machine. Part of what I left behind when I moved was a stripped 306 frame on a pile of aluminum scrap. There is a party on ebay selling a selection of 306 parts at reasonable prices. If the bed of machine is available they might be willing to make a deal. The bed can be separated from the arm to reduce shipping and the number of parts you have to transfer from one machine to the other.

    I have two 306Ks. An early black one w/out the Cams. I believe it was made in February of 1954. It has the two locating pins at the top. I am using bobbins from Central Michigan Sewing Supply with it and a 20U bobbin case. However, the other is a newer beige 306K that has the cams. It has the 5' oclock notch. I want to keep that one with the electric motor and I am considering upgrading it to a beefier motor. The other I will treadle and would like to put a spoke wheel on it if it is possible. Anyway, I am taking up your time but am I to understand that the ONLY way to get the one with the 5 o'clock shuttle working is to change the shuttle to the correct one like on my other 306K, or more easily open up a 5'oclock bobbin case unless I want to change the hook assembly like you did in your other video. Also, have you had any experience with the free arm 320 K and do you like it?

      I've run a 306 on a treadle base I salvaged from a White Rotary. I had to notch the front of the belt guard for clearance but it worked fairly well with the original hand wheel. The spoke wheels run smoother because they're heavier and store more inertia. Maybe use stick on wheel weights from the auto parts store? The easiest upgrade for your other machine is probably to get a Dremel and cut a 5 o'clock notch in a 20u bobbin case. I've seen pictures of a pretty crude hack that still worked reliably. The cut away at the top of the case is wide enough you could be off by several degrees in either direction cutting the notch and still be in no danger of a needle strike. I would wrap a strip of paper around the stock bobbin case then do like a headstone rubbing to make a template I could glue to the case I wanted to cut. The few times I found a 320 I was instantly outbid by people who wanted it more than I did.

      @@redoak3809 An added advantage is that a modified 20u bobbin case should work equally well in either machine. The five o'clock cut won't interfere with it indexing on the top pins in a machine that has them.

      @@joekahno I would have never thought of that. Thanks! Too many machines, too little time. I wish I could get a 400 series German machine to treadle with.
